Years of political welfare shaming have given a lot of people this misconception that groceries and cooking at home are some expensive extravagant luxury only the wealthy and welfare queens can afford and fast food is the only affordable meal options.
I went from admittedly going to fast food 2-3 times per week to now barely 2-3 times per month. The low prices were the only value and they've taken that away. I guess they like fewer sales. Interesting business model.
People still go. If you get the app. You can get a whopper meal for $8 and at Wendy’s you can get a Dave’s single meal for $7.50. I live in Las Vegas. Not sure about McDonald’s.
Everything not just fast food is getting expensive because corporations has figured out a way to collude with each other and use inflation as an excuse to gouge customers by 2 to 10 times what it really is with impunity.
The lack of competition(since a handful of companies own these fast food place) is killing consumers. The government needs to do its job and keep companies from monopolizing markets. Break them up! Oh and stop letting corporations and investment groups from buying up all the single-family housing!!
These people are liars and in the corporate pocket. These people are greedy. Everyone stop going I quit 2 years ago and have been better off without it.

@@ThingsyourollupWell... it depends. If you buy in bulk (and I mean bulk) and know your way around the kitchen and can make a few sacrifices at times, then it's reasonably cheaper than fast food/restaurants. If you're not able to do that, you buy prepackaged food, or worse, have to buy certain ingredients, then your meals are probably going to be break even at best. Fast food restaurants are ran by a franchisee in most cases. They are lucky to make $100-$150K in profit in a year. They are paying increases in wages, utilities like electric/gas/water/sewer, increases in taxes, increases in insurance, increases in the cost of goods/food, increases in the cost of machinery and/or to fix said machinery used in preparing food. EVERYTHING has got expensive.

At a fast food joint near me the franchisee comes to work in an expensive late model Mercedes, and his wife has a late model Lexus SUV. Then they cry poor mouth, and complain it is hard because now they have to pay their workers more. When they operate, they are very stingy. They only give you two packages of catchup with a burger and fries, and barely give out condiment sauces or salt and pepper. They were also ordered to throw away expired food product in the dumpster by the county health department inspector. After the inspector was gone, the franchisee then ordered his employees to go dumpster diving and remove the expired product. Then the franchisee ordered his employees to serve the expired food product to customers. Disgusting.

It was a treat to get fast food. Nowadays people act like it's normal to eat out everyday. Nobody wants to cook at home anymore.
"Nobody wants to cook at home anymore." Because unless you are feeding a family of 4 or more, cooking at home isn't as cost effective as eating out USED to be. Cooking for one or 2 requires A LOT of things that apartment dwellers don't have (ie, large freezer). One also needs copious room for lots of storage containers because eating the same thing for about a week at a time becomes a reality quick. The alternative is to waste a bunch of material because you need to cut the recipes down by 50 - 75%. Having to buy an ENTIRE shaker of an relatively expensive spice just to only use 1 ts is infuriating and costly.

Can't buy a part of head of lettuce. Can't buy half an onion. Can't buy a half pound of good hamburger meat. Can't buy only 2 slices of cheese. Can't buy anything less than 8 hamburger buns at a time. Additionally, I have to be willing to eat burgers again tmrw... and the day after that... and the day after that. Otherwise, the perishables that I didn't use on Day 1 will go to waste. Also, none of this takes into account the energy that I'll use to cook the food. Nor the money that I'll spend on transporting the groceries home. Nor the time (counted in hours) that I'll spend doing that cooking. Further, in order to cut the waste costs, I have to be willing to research recipes and figure out what else I can use all of the groceries for... which means storage costs (plastic containers ain't free). Noone is blaming the greed of these corporations for higher prices, but once you mention raising the wages of the workers, everyone starts blaming the higher prices on wage increases.
Well, any company is going to pass on costs to its customers. If they have to raise prices, they'll raise prices to pay for it. They aren't going to accept a cut in profit margins. You can call it greed if you want, but companies are in business to make money and their greed in that area is just a fact of life.
I wish price was the only complaint. Lately, I've been noticing they've been shorting me out on bacon. Labor costs are %20 at fast food (I did IT work for the accounting department) Ov that unemployment, SSI etc is included. Doubling pay would raise prices a maximum 15% I don't see any fast food places that doubles pay! CEO pay and dividends did double.
Your math is wrong. Again labor costs at fast food are less than %20. Because unless you are feeding a family of 4 or more, cooking at home isn't as cost effective as eating out USED to be. Cooking for one or 2 requires A LOT of things that apartment dwellers don't have (ie, large freezer). One also needs copious room for lots of storage containers because eating the same thing for about a week at a time becomes a reality quick.

Cook at home people! More quality, less costly...Prep your meals to have a diner on the go, you dont need these fast food joints!
This is nothing compared to restaurants like Outback, Applebee's, TGI Fridays their prices have also gone up and at this point you gotta be rich to eat at those places.
Yup I'll eat at Texas Roadhouse
And they want a 20% tip for poor service.
The drink prices are absurd, even down here in Texas. $2.99 for a soft drink is beyond absurd. Not that I'm poor, it's the principal of the thing.
YUP! I used to have a dear friend whose family owned a bunch of convenient stores (Indian of course 😂). He told me their soda fountains were one of their biggest money makers, even at 99¢ for a Big Gulp. He said the syrup concentrate worked out to like maybe a penny per drink, plus a couple cents in the cup/straw/lids. HUGELY profitable, so think about when it's $3!!!
Everything is expensive thanks to this govt making things high when realistically they don't need to be smh
The government does not control prices. This isn’t the Soviet Union or cuba.
Government is not involved in this.
Bootlickers in the replies
Free market in the USA (kind of). Not completely controlled by govt. If anything govt subsidies of Big Agriculture should drive prices down. Simple demographic shift most at work. Fewer young workers and more retirees with a little extra cash will drive inflation. All govt can do is cut spending for social security / medicare or increase interest rates. Not a good strategy for getting elected.
It's interesting that no one seems bothered by a restaurant charging $2 for an extra slice of cheese or a $4 "upcharge" to substitute a bowl of lettuce with a few scraps of carrots in it that they call a "side salad" instead of fries.
A restaurant is supposed to be a way better quality and it’s fresh. McDonald’s is supposed to be cheap
Or the $5 it costs at some places for some cheese and fries. Not worth it. Make your food at home and let these places go for the upper class diners who will still pay those prices, I say.
Who? McDonalds? They dont sell lettuce or carrots there because apparently when covid happened anything healthy put their employees at risk and so had to be promptly removed from the menu.
Fast food is so easy to say no to.

Labor is traditionally considered around a third of expenses, so doubling wages should only increase the price by a third.

@@kettch777 that’s horse crap, raise the minimum wage and cap the maximum wage, no ceo needs to be making 20 million a year, much less 200 million a year.
And fines also need to be % based, so rich people can’t just ignore them. First ticket of the year, 1/10th of 1% of annual gross; 2nd ticket, 2/10th of 1%. For someone making $40K, first ticket would be $40. For someone making $20,000,000, first ticket would be $20,000k.
(Minimum would be the poverty line, so out of work people can’t just ignore tickets.)
The numbers given for inflation are way off, I’ve worked part time retail decades ago and even my low wages $11 per hour could still afford fast food prices now. $20 minimum wages only helps the low income; but then again how long should a burger stay at $1, fifty more years when a 12oz can of soda costs more?

Buy at a grocery store in the cooked meals section. MUCH cheaper. And, usually fresh(er).
In and Out is an exception to this. The other fast food places have dug themselves into an overhead hole trying to monopolize the industry with expanded menus and gimmicks. In and Out has kept a small menu and has sourced supplies locally; all while sustaining low prices and paying their employees a quality wage. R.I.P Mcdonalds, and the rest. You get what you deserve.
That's what I'm saying, some busy In N Outs have 15-20 people working both front and back at the same time (making 20ish an hour) and their double cheeseburger combo still costs less than $10 in my city. Can someone ask that 'expert' how the cost of shipping through the Panama Canal is affecting food that is sourced from the US and Mexico??
It could be the packaging too. Cups, sandwich wrappers, etc.
@@blugreen123 - I'm not sure why a paper product would be cheaper to import. However, if that were to be the case, they would come from Asia in which case most, if not all, would go to a west coast port. Even if some of this package came through the Panama Canal, the cost per unit would be tiny as you'd have literally hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of these items loaded on a ship.

Keep paying the prices and you will get more of the same or worse. Funny how the news reports never actually mention that part. They just find an excuse and latch on to that instead of telling consumers they're part of the reason the prices stay high.
Here in NYC I'm just glad Wendy's still has the 4 for $4 meal deal (junior cheeseburger, fries, 4 chicken nuggets, and fountain soda.) I remember eating that before pandemic and am glad they still have it (yes in Manhattan!)

Dollar menu at Mcdonald's is no longer a dollar.
I opt to go in and dine for lunch at a mid range restaurant rather than fast food because the food it better and it's generally less expensive
There's a difference between inflation and greed. The latter is happening at an alarming rate. I stopped eating fast food 8 years ago. Not only is my body more healthy, but so is my wallet.
I'm eating more at home now these days. The regular $11-15 a meal is getting ridiculous for what you get and a lot of these fast food places have been shrinking their food as well.
Corporate greed, pure and simple. last time I was in Japan, a big mac combo cost me about $5 and their workers are paid well enough to live in Tokyo. Also, consider In N' Out, their double cheeseburger, fries and soda combo still costs under $10 in my city and they also pay their workers $20 an hour, and sometimes have 15+ employees working at once, while Mcdonalds supposedly struggles to pay 2 workers in the whole building.
Wait until they perfect the AI and robot technology. I doubt these fast food restaurants will even need to staff them. There's a "test" store here in Fort Worth, TX that is staffed by two people and no dining area, drive thru only. Just a matter of time when these fast food jobs disappear....and that's a good thing. Good for consumers, franchisee's and it also forces people to actually bring some education or technology expertise to the table.
that is why prices are high the more workers make the higher the price will be minimum wage in the 90s was $4.25 the 80s it was $3.75 witch was good money back then money went a lot further back in the day $20 would last me the whole weekend $10 was half tank of gas $6 half a case of beer cigarettes $1.10 and got change back

@f: Inflation and prices skyrocketed under the current administration. Inflation hurts the lower income folks the most, but the current administration knows they won’t know their own government is to blame.
So ... the rising minimum wage has nothing to do with it? I don't believe you.
How has…? And they don’t mention the demand for $15 an hour for an entry level job? The owner of a McD franchise did not hesitate when I asked about this. She said that it was higher wages. Media mindset on display here.

When the minimum wage was around $8/hr, Combo X cost around $8. Now that the minimum wage is $15/hr, what is the price of Combo X? He also fails to understand that McDonald's operates on a different margin than a local mom & pop restaurant.
Labor costs are %20 at fast food (I did IT work for the accounting department)
Ov that unemployment, SSI etc is included.
Doubling pay would raise prices a maximum 15%
I don't see any fast food places that doubles pay!
CEO pay and dividends did double.
Your math is wrong.
Again labor costs at fast food are less than %20.
If take hone wages are up %3(that's all fast food places increased pay look it up)

The fact that they convinced you to blame the workers is why our nation is falling apart.
