I had one in the early 90's. I learned how to fly heli"s with it. As a beginner I also had the occasional impact with the earth, lol. I had Tower Hobbies on speed dial and was on a first name basis with the service department. I went through several sets of blades, tail booms, main shafts and other bits on a weekly schedule. It was a great flyer and after months of practice I finally got the hang of heli flying. The old Airtronics mechanical gyro worked well keeping the nose pointed where I wanted. Unfortunately the Concept was lost in a house fire, I lost everything except the clothes on my back. Rough times for sure. After a few years I recovered and now I have a Hirobo Shuttle ZXX. I've had it for over 20 years now and it's still flying today. It's also a great heli but the Concept will always be missed. Happy flying.
Hey Gordon, I started the same way. Tower hobbies finally discontinued selling parts. I bought 4 concept 30s in various conditions, scoffed up parts here and there. Got plenty of spare parts. Haven't flown her since the video was made. Been doing electrics. Sorry to hear of your loss, devastating. I couldn't imagine. At least you're back flying again. Glad you liked the video. Keep on flying.
That’s a really unfortunately story man I’m sorry to hear that. I can’t imagine losing everything you own in a fire, for sure the helicopter was a sad loss but not the worst of it. Hope you recovered quick and im glad you got back in the hobby!
This is one of best RC videos. Thanks for sharing. I remember looking at this in the tower catalogs when I was a kid- like late 80s early 90s. never saw a concept in person.
truckpilot55 You also did a nice job on the shell. Looks cut out professionally and decals applied with class...not like some of this horseshit I used to see at the flying field.
G'day truckpilot55, That is some nice work with a classic helicopter there! Far too many people say "it's too hard to get parts for, I'll park it on the shelf and look at it" I have just acquired a 1990 Concept 30 SX and I plan on learning to fly on a little TRex 450 clone, then I am going to give it the flogging it so richly deserves! :-)
@@carters2 I've got a couple of spare concept 30s without the electronics and engines. Bought them for spare parts. debating getting rid of my fleet of concept 30 stuff.
yeh it sounds like i should've taken your advise a few weeks ago :/ the helicopter sort of went through the hedge the other day and the gear grind'd down (i'm on the hunt for one on ebay) thank you again for all the help, i will be sure to move the tail boom back a bit and to check that the blades are all balanced :)
you must have a TX that will mix throttle and pitch, otherwise you must use idle up and control pitch alone. if you are using a switch to control pitch, swap channels pitch and throttle. get the pitch gauge out and take some measurements. the vibration must be eliminated. looks like the tail boom is in to far causing the tail drive wire to bounce inside the boom. the manual explains all that. the blades must be balanced, and tracked, all the shafts must be straight.
screw the brass collar on the shaft and use locktite. if you are talking about the tail drive shaft, you must push the boom all the way in and pull it back 1/8 inch so that there is end play between the two ends of the drive shaft, other wise the shaft will bow and cause severe vibration.
they fly so much more responsive if you take the stock wire drive out and put a NHP carbon "tube" drive in, scour the web and you will find one, the wire drives have got so much spring in them.....i keep watching the vid as it brings back so many memories for me, i am flying a Raptor 50 these days though
usually the first or the last socket is power. sounds like your swash is not set properly. check out the link in my video description, you might find it usefull. let me know if it helped.
the concept 30 is easier to learn on then the 450. much larger, and much more stable. that's how i learned. parts can be found on ebay. also tailwinz dot com sells a lot of parts, new and used. blades can be matched up, just be aware of the root thickness at the blade grip.
mannn, after two months got it all sorted, tried starting it tonight and find a cracked fuel tank, no glow plug along with a blocked filter... gotta wait till tomorrow now haha
do you possibly think you could say which servo goes to which number in the receiver, i'm having some trouble getting the transmitter to move the servos. i've got a matching pair for the frequency channels. Any help would be amazing from anyone :)
Looks like the head Speed is a bit low, take some collective pitch out of the blades and let the rotor head spool up a bit more, than adjust everything else accordingly
i've tried the process of elimination, when i get nearly all the servos in the right place, my some sticks are opposite, etc. i know this sounds silly, but could you just tell me which number on the receiver does the plug the comes out of the on/off switch plug into (it has 2 wires). this seems to be messing up my stick movements, thanks
Speaking of being too hard to get parts for, I know I need main blades, tail rotor blades and there is something else missing from the tail rotor? Can you still get these parts somehow or do I need to start thinking about how I am going to make them?
What fuel are you using. I was using a blue 80/20 mix and had mine running pretty solid once. I showed the video and they said there should be more smoke coming out. So I moved the HS needle wider by one single click, and now shuts off once in the air. I moved one click back in and still shuts off in the air. The carb was pretty clogged up. I'm thinking a seal or some dirt is in there which is making it so its not a smooth adjustment.
Been using 15 % cool power heli fuel. Sounds like you have bad fuel. This fuel attracts moisture over time. If the fuel has been open a while it should be discarded. This vid was the break in period, running a rich mixture. Try new unopened fuel.
I was told to use 80/20 because helis need that extra lubrication since they run hard constantly, vs short bursts in a car. The carb acts like there is junk in there because one click on the high speed makes it go dramatically one way or another. I had it working great and someone commented I should have more smoke and it went downhill after that.
Did you try new unopened fuel? Try carb cleaner. Open needle valve one and three quarter turns. Get it running then screw in to a rich setting, maybe a couple of clicks. Try a couple of drops of lighter fluid in the carb to help get it going. If this doesn't work, you probably damaged the engine running to lean.
Engine runs great right now. Idles perfect and runs forever. I just have troubles once I throttle up enough to get off the ground. I will try pulling it again and using fresh 80/20 fuel. If I start from scratch, how many turns out should I start with on low and high speed? Starting from screwed all the way clock wise, how many turns out on both? I always get confused too on is clockwise lean or richen.
mapoff The main needle screws clockwise all the way in, then unscrew it counterclockwise 1.5 turns to richen the mixture. The other screw inside the barrel is the transition adjustment from idle to full throttle. If your transition is smooth, don't mess with it. Same deal, screw in, clockwise to lean. I'm not sure but i think that is 1.5 turns out from bottom also. This adjustment is very delicate and requires very little increments. If when throttling up the engine stops you must see or hear a rich or lean condition. If to rich, turn the screw in, clockwise to lean. Use only small adjustments. It is always better to start rich, lean it out as you break-in you engine. Better rich than lean.
hi there, i'm having some trouble with the tail rotor shaft. it slides in and fits in well but then the blades start spinning, the shaft slowly wobbles and becomes lose.. has this happened to yours, if so is there anything i can do to help stop the shaft sliding out? - thanks
the best i got it to work was by holding it by the tail and lifting off :( the collective would not go up with the throttle so the collective could only be controlled separately by a switch. if you look on my channel you can see the heli hovering for a bit (with the aid of my hand) , thanks for checking up though :)

I had some nitro Kyosho cars back in the 80s and 90s.
Nice Flying👍
I have one of these I’m my basement. Needs some work but would be awesome to get it going again.
a good project while social distancing, go for it.
@@truckpilot55 have you been able to gets parts for it? Last time I flew it the servo motor battery died in flight and it nose dived into the ground.

yes
you must have a 6 channel heli radio. plug everything in and move the sticks. use process of elimination.
What kind of gyro does this have?
ya man, get her dusted off. have some fun. i'll have this back out in the spring when it warms up a little.
What engine? I am assuming a period correct OS .32? Also, what headspeed are you running? Like 1,400-1,500?
Look for main blades its so hard 2 find in ebay.anyone sell parts for them?i am from greece.
look for carbon fiber blades and match them up.
