Lol exactly. His first film, Dark Star is also like this amidst its ambition in special effects and existential story. Such a badass director. Didn't give zero fucks.

He was married to Adrienne Barbeau at the time, so may well have been serious. You can detect a bit of a pause in Kurt's response when she appears in THAT dress😍.
I didn't know John Carpenter made a brief cameo as the heli-pilot. It's great to hear what they say about particular scenes: "Oh God, I was so desperate for a pee during when we filmed that scene...!" First watched this movie during the mid-90's, a cult classic, one of my favourites.
That’s hilarious. I once had to pee during a friends film project at college and I kept messing up takes cause I was squirming so much so fast forward around 7 hours and then I got to use the John 😂😂
I've listened to a few commentaries with these two and they always have a great time together. The commentaries to The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China are just as good.

I got into a literal fight with an old friend on mine over Escape from New York when i was a kid, he thought that the film was rubbish and i thought that it was the coolest film that i had ever seen. I took to wearing an eye patch that i got from the Doctor for an eye infection and i talking to everyone, my family, friends, school teachers, the old guy at the local shop and random strangers i met in the street with the most growly and deep voice i could manage at 14 years old. My friend said that i was an idiot and laughed at my patch, i threw a punch and missed badly, because of my patch, he gut punched me and that was it, fight over. I Still love Escape from New York and i might even have my old patch stashed away somewhere, my old friend died back in 1997 after getting into a fight, RIP Darren.
The Thing commentary with these two is just as good. The blu ray version has some commentary cut out, so if interested watch the regular DVD version with Carpenter/Russell spoken track.
Carpenter told a story about Pleasance bringing that up when he was approached to play the role, so to placate him Carpenter cooked up a back story that the character was the love child of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, who were both in power at that time.
kurt owes the second half of his career to carpenter after doing family friendly disney movies and even after his great take on elvis....very few in hollywood took him seriously john changed all that
Kurt wanted to escape his Disney persona by doing other movies roles his work with Carpenter and Quinten Tarantino are classics as well as movies like Overboard, Captain Ron, Soldier, 3000 Miles To Graceland and a slew of others.
So great...probably the film I've watched the most since I was 14 and I'm 50 now. The atmosphere in Carpenter's films is like nothing else and all on a tight budget. And that Soundtrack! Must have been incredible working on this and The Thing. So great to hear them laughing about it... What do people think about the deleted opening scene? Should it have been in the main feature? It's certainly a great intro...
can't remember where, but I heard the line, "YOU'RE THE DUKE!" was improvised by the actor who was an ex p.o.w. in real life. carpenter wanted him to tone it down and be more presidential, but the guy was like, "hell no! this is how you'd really feel after going through that!"
No wonder Kurt and Season Hubley ("girl in chock full o'nuts") got divorced after this movie and why he laughs at how long he spent trying to save her.😁

I saw this movie in the theater when I was a kid. It was a blast.

How could she not with bewbs that came through the door 15 minutes before she did.

Donald Pleasance. Our first British president.

George Washington was British.
