Damn, i loved on the waterfront. I trust orson, he was like 100 frank sinatras just by having a giant personality. I assume ben franklin was much like him
How many people did McCarthy torture, jail or kill? None. Many of his accusations were correct, some definitely were not. Some people lost their jobs because of unfair accusations. Gee, that happens every week now if you are accused of racism or "inappropriate" behavior. Welles was a leftie. It was a fact that there were actual Soviet agents in our government including at the highest level. This was a time when Stalin and Mao were marching ine very direction and building nuclear bombs.
Two of the greatest collaborators in Hollywood History
As bold as he is he could sure back it up. What a commanding presence.
And, we just ignore the bssis of the betrayal? How ignorant people have become of that time.
When you see all the verified communist activity in Hollywood and universities back then the UAC and McCarthyism doesn’t sound so bad.
OMFG that is wonderful!!
To hell with Kazan. Brilliant director but indeed, a loser.
0:15 For those who don’t speak French, Orson told her she had chosen the wrong and to “mettre en selle,” which means “saddle up.” Dude was a gangster.
He says ‘you have chosen the wrong metteur en scène‘, I.e. the wrong director to ask him about because of his disdain for him.
@@lionguardant5468 Ah, thank you, couldn’t quite hear it.
Only Senator McCarthy didn’t run the HOUSE UAC. That was a democrat by the name of Roy Brewer.
Yessss! Kazan named names. (though On The Waterfront is still a classic)
If I ever work at a fire tower I'd want that hat! 👒
This is true. Kazan was.
The reverse is actually true, the communists were the traitors working for the communist party. He was right to name names.
From his point of view, his point of view is justified. We can’t judge Kazan because we weren’t exposed to those pressures or fears but Welles was. He was never forgiven by his own generation. I would like to see the whole piece.
He has this vibe of a wise man and kind. What a rare gentleman.
Wow. Just wow. And what is puzzling is Kazan was such a compassionate, humanistic artist who understood people and who coaxed astonishing performances out of his actors. So what Kazan did in front of the committee made no sense. It was out of character. Pretty shocking. GO ORSON!
Or he was a good actor.
The word formidable always springs to mind with OW. He never stopped creating, he never lost his dignity which I think people believe re. his commercials. So what? He was doing them to fund his projects. How many lesser people would just give up?
Interesting that Welles added that to it. Seeing this makes me respect him a lot more.
Welles is wrong here. McCarthy had nothing to do with The Blacklist. That was the House Un-American Committee. And a lot of Hollywood was already under Communist control. McCarthy was vindicated in the Venona Report.
I love how he basically says, "I hate Elia Kazan. He's traitorous s***...Damn fine director, though."
THANK YOU. I asked Abel if he knew this was funny and he told me he didn’t remember doing this.
For everyone who is sad _ listen to John and Kurt. You'll be laughing and your sadness will be gone.
Benjamin Byron Davis could play this man in a movie
Welles is right about Kazan. He was a turd of a human being who betrayed some of the best entertainers and writers of the day; Zero Mostel, Howard Da Silva, Burgess Meredith, Pete Seeger, Dalton Trumbo, and many others on the altar of Joe McCarthy's malignant ego.
The way he growls out “watch this- here’s the money shot homes” as the drill goes into that guys fucking head… legend
Raves: 😎👍👍👍👍👍👍👍Big Trouble in Little China was soooooo funny. I never laughed so hard in all my life. An absolutely hilarious film. An epic instant classic. Kurt Russel had by far all the best lines. Really, really good film, action packed and full of constant one liners. The camp is so perfectly timed it is just bonkers. I still say the film lines. One mild rant: The film could have done without the phrase, “Now that really Pis*** me off,” but oh well. This film is beloved by children to this very day and it’s 2024.
I watched the whole dvd commentary of this a long time ago and I cracked up probably even more than watching it without. Funny dudes.
You can even hear how the French translator hesitated a moment before translating "Traitor". That is very harsh language, but entirely deserved.
Welles was a loser. Kazan was a winner. End of story.
No Kazan movie will be remebered in history as Kane will, and i love Kazan's work, specially Streetcar and East of Eden, but Kane is one of the biggest masterpieces of all time.
@@fernandomaron87 KANE is the only film of Welles that's remembered, and it's overrated anyway. Kazan has multiple films.
Orson Welles is taught among the biggest names in film history. If he was a loser, what would that make people like you, insulting other people's legacy?
Blacklisting is way worse today than it was back then.
Although McCarthy attacked government employees. It was over in the House of Representatives where academics and entertainers were attacked. It’s just that “McCarthyism” isn’t confusing as (Martin) “Dieism” would be to theological Deism
Elia Kazan already explained himself. These people were gangsters.
ALL Trump supporters today ARE TRAITORS. ALL of those still registered Republican DESPITE the party NO LONGER releasing a national party platform AFTER almost 200 years ARE TRAITORS.
"So this is how liberty ends--to thunderous applause."
Where’s the full interview? Orson seems to be in the mood for the truth about Hollywood!!
The biggest difference between people who I identify as communists and people who identify as McCarthyists is the words they use to describe themselves. They are both insufferably cult-like, abuse the word "traitor" more than the Bush administration, and can't view a single thing outside a narrow ideological lens.
where is the original full version of this video? :(
I thought it said Eliza Cassan and I was like “Orson knew about Deus Ex?”
Welles is up there as one of my personal heroes along with (the historical Jesus, Giordano Bruno, Hypatia, etc.) as he was ALWAYS authentic and spoke unpopular truths regardless of how he would be crucified for doing so.
Kazan named STALINISTS. They deserved to be informed on.
We should all thank our lucky stars that this movie exists.
Commie traitors.
From the sounds of it, Elia Kazan was not celebrated for his French excellence... 😕
BRAVO !!!!!!!!!!!
McCarthy was right. The Vassiliev notebooks (copied from KGB files post-USSR) and the Venona Project (declassified CIA files) show that McCarthy’s greatest sin was he actually didn’t go hard enough. Hollywood was absolutely stuffed to the gills with subversives - and it still is, though they’re not in service to the USSR anymore
1:09 ??
Elia Kazan was a helluva director but selling out his friends will be a stain to his legacy forever
What, if anything, is the DVD commentary like?
No other like him, won’t see his like again I’m afraid…..
