Melchizedek and Jesus: How to find Jesus in the Old Testament pt 6

  • Examining the Bible to find out who Melchizedek was and how he relates to Jesus. Some think he was a Christophany and others that he is just a type of Christ. I will lay out some reasons for why I see him as a type of Christ and we will learn some principles to add to our tool kit for finding other types of Christ in the Old Testament.
Melchizedek shows up out of nowhere in Genesis 14 and then, in Psalm 110 we hear a promise from God that the Messiah will be a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Finally, the book of Hebrews offers us divinely inspired commentary on the nature of Melchizedek, and that is where the real debate lies. Is Hebrews speaking of Melchizedek in a literal sense or in a literary sense when it says "without father without mother and without genealogy"?

Very humble & honest as you'll hear him constantly tell you when he doesn't know something or isn't learned on a particular subject & puts forth theories he maybe adheres to for the time being. I like him.

Jesus born from spirit (Kalima) of God.
Jesus in Bible and Issa in Qur'an is not same. Satan created Issa to cheat people.
Jesus had the authority to forgive sin. But Mohammed taught to kiss black stone in Kabah to forgive sin. So Jesus is our saviour from Satan and sin.
Jesus did not teach sex, lies Thakiya, hate, killing, nikha mutha etc...
Jesus is holy. Jesus didn't teach a bar and a place of sex in heaven.

While I was reading Genesis in early pregnancy I came to the passage about Melchizedek and it inspired me to name my daughter Salem. It really called to me after reading he was not Jewish, yet still a worshiper of our Lord God, I was not aware that such people had existed before Christ. I completely settled on the name after reading that Salem had the connotation of peace (good thing my husband agreed that it was a good name!).
He is a very interesting character, and the more I learn about him the more pleased I am with my daughter's name.

Another who worshipped God was Naaman the Syrian who was cured of leprosy when Elisha was prophet. Jesus referred to him in Nazareth when they refused to believe him and they were so offended at the thought that salvation was for anyone besides Jews that they were going to throw Jesus off a cliff. An interesting point about Naaman as an example of salvation not being under law but under grace was that as a servant of the king he had to assist his master while his master worshipped a pagan god, and Elisha excused him of guilt as an exception saying, "go in peace." And of course "peace" is "salem". We enter peace now by entering the heavenly Jerusalem, which is the Church, through the baptism which now saves us also.

I remember much fun made of the poor evangelicals who have no knowledge because they reject the restoration of God's one true church and Melchizadek priesthood.

Even though we don't know all the details we would like to know about Melchizedek, the Bible gives us enough to chew on and also so we can see the typology and comparison between Jesus and Melchizedek. Great stuff! Looking forward to the rest.

I just watched around 60% of your explanation in this video. And, a thought came to my mind.
From your explanation about typology between Old and New Testament, and from your explanation about Melchisedek was a real King and Priest of a Kingdom called Salem, and he blessed Abraham, I then saw a common pattern between John the Baptist and Melchisedek.
They both prepared the coming of a person assigned by God for the salvation of His people. Abraham was a father of those who have faith. Jesus is the Messiah. Melchisedek blessed Abraham as a sign of God about who Abraham was, John the Baptist baptized Jesus as a sign of God about who Jesus was.
    This is interesting. Really.

Praise the Lord!!! Really good clarity on Melchizedek. It just adds to what I believe about the book of Hebrews and it’s purpose. Persecution was beginning around that time and many Jewish believers in Jesus began to go back to Judaism to escape and so the writer of Hebrews encouraged the believers to stay firm in the faith since Jesus is better than Moses and the Law and so on.
David Pawson speaks about it in the “unlocking the Bible” series on Hebrews.

Ah, I agree with your explanation of 'without father or mother, without genealogy' meaning it was left out of the text. The reason too I think is because genealogy was the very requirement for the Jewish priesthood of the line of Levi, the sons of Aaron. Saying that Melchizedek was without genealogy would have explained to the readers that he was not a priests as required in the Jewish line of priests.
Love this discourse! The fact that the writer of Hebrews elaborates on Melchizedek so much has always fascinated me.

The way you Christians "find" Jesus in the Tanakh is this: You shoot an arrow into a tree. You then paint a bulls-eye around the arrow and call it a "prophesy." Unless you are studying Tanakh with Orthodox Jews - who are well versed in Hebrew, its root words, and its numerical values - you will *never* understand its true meanings. And you will definitely never find out that *nothing* in Tanakh foreshadows Jesus. A messiah? Yes. But you'll have to study with a rabbi to completely, and properly, understand who Moshiach (messiah) is supposed to be.

I appreciate you bringing up the debates based on the extra biblical texts. I have listened to Michael Heiser talk about this topic. After hearing your teaching, I realized that a lot that he said must be set aside because it contradicts the inspired text.
I really, really like your interpretation. I get excited when I hear theories that solve ALL of the "problems" surrounding a specific topic. I thank God for your enthusiasm for the Word. Keep up the great work!

I get the feeling Heiser has spelt so much time in school that he's elevated scholarship. He even mentioned the "yahwist and elohist" authors of the Penteteuch as if it wasn't written by moses but by other people compiling moses' (or somebody's) old texts.. Yeah right. So much "higher critical" scholarship has destroyed faith and limited the Bible.

    • @mariemilycraig
      @mariemilycraig 3 года назад

Heiser actually says exactly what Mike says in this video 😊
To the other commenter: when he mentions the 'yahwist and elohist' writers, he's most probably quoting other scholarship. He doesn't hold to the JEDP thing.
He doesn't discount the possibility that there were editors involved, but that doesn't affect Scripture's inspiration: Heiser holds to the idea that God inspired and led all the people who were involved in the production of the text throughout time, so that what we have today is Holy Spirit-inspired Scripture.

Mike, I am in a season where I physically don’t have time to do the kind of work it takes to exegete all this passages properly. We have moved our whole family across the state temporarily to care for my mother in law who is bedbound and not in her right mental state after an extended illness. Sometimes I’m fortunate if I get 15 uninterrupted minutes in the Word and prayer for personal study (prior to this I spent at least an hour a day in personal study). I still have to drive back across the state for my kids activities like theatre-we listen to your videos on the drive. This is like water for my thirsty soul. I love God’s Word and love mining for these treasures on my own. But right now, not having the time, I can listen as someone who has done the hard leg work serves up the feast. And it’s also brought up lots of good theology questions in the car to discuss with the 14, 11, and 7 year olds. We started with your Evidence for the Bible series and have moved onto this one. Thank you!

I heard an interesting theory about the identity of Melchizedek. I don't put a lot of stock into it, but it's still interesting. The idea was the Melchizedek is actually Shem (not Shemp but Shem), Noah's son. The thought is that Shem could reasonably still been alive during Abraham's life and that he would have been someone who was known to many for his background.

This is a very coherent teaching on a passage I’ve never really felt I understood aside from an inkling of this interpretation of the concept of no genealogy. However it seems obvious to me that Melchizedek is the true identity of Tom Bombadil. While Melchizedek has no genealogy and no begining of days Tom is the oldest and fatherless. While Melchizedek shows up for a brief episode to aid the protagonist in a battle so does Bombadil. Melchizedek and Tom Bombadil both have an area which is considered their domain. And finally it’s a reasonably common belief that they are both appearances of God or Eru respectively.

Hey Mike, your stuff has been helping me grow in my faith tremendously. It has truly been a blessing, on par, if not better than a lot of what I've heard from Michael Brown and William Lane Craig, and I have listened to both of those guys a lot. I just wish I found you sooner.
I was wondering if you have any videos planned on Secondary Separation? Servus Christi makes a good case that I'm having a hard time refuting through scripture and it's very troublesome to me. The idea that WLC could be guilty for not rebuking Catholic doctrine when given the chance to speak out against it (he seems to classify it as Mere Christianity) making him complicit and therefore guilty in spreading a false Gospel is very depressing to me. I don't want to have to give up learning from him or forgo sharing his material. Same goes for Dr. Brown, who although doesn't believe you can hold to Catholic doctrine and be saved (from what I've heard), he seems to be associated with people who do.
Here is a link Servus Christi's case for Secondary Separation: ruclips.net/video/hT9aQyl7p-8/видео.html.
If you can't give it a listen, I totally understand. If you're even interested, let me know and I'll try to list his case by the scripture he provides.

Q: If in Hebrews chapter 5 says that Jesus prayed with vehement cries to be saved from death, and was heard by God, how is it that Jesus still went to the cross and died on it?
My A: Just because God the Father heard Jesus' prayer DOES NOT MEAN He was changing His mind about His Son going to the cross to die. Jesus prayed, "Not My will, but Yours be done." God's promises are Yes and Amen, but His answers to our prayers can be Yes, No, or Wait.

Man, I'd hate to have a debate with this beautiful man lol
He's so humble & objective at the same time. He'll tell you what he knows & he'll tell you what he doesn't know, how he perceives & interprets scripture, how he arrives at his conclusion & it's easy to understand where he comes from because he's just so damn forthcoming & honest.
I just discovered you, Pastor, ab a week ago. I really appreciate all your honest, very in depth research you provide.. & with sources!
I'd love to see a debate of yours. I'm sure you get alot of hate but they'd be hard pressed in a debate because of how honest & transparent you are. Couple that with your vast knowledge (I've seen your video regarding catholicism & mormonism, as well as your bible studies) & any debater whose even slightly dishonest, would show clear signs of it. The fact you can have a view of scripture & almost counter your own argument with alternate views tells me how much time you put into your studies & how humble you are in regard to your conclusion.
Anyone who says "Here's my view & I could be wrong, but show me.." has my respect. I try & do the same because, if I'm being honest, I'm probably wrong in my theology somewhere. Only a fool would believe he's 100% correct lol Thanks Socrates, Pluto & Aristotle lol
You remind me of my Pastor. He often states his theological views on very controversial topics & ends with, in regard to his own theological beliefs, "..in my honest, humble, & completely correct opinion." 😉 🤣
It's funny because we all have differing views but think that we're 100% correct lol The only difference is the ability to defend it. That's why it's funny!

The bible never talks about Jesus' early life, but he could have been channeling the spirit of Melchizedek . Some theories suggest he was studying in Egypt in the Order of Melchizedek to become a high priest, and came back to Jersusalem during age 30-33.
      Hebrews 5: 5-6, 7:11
      Genesis 14:17-20

    • @bobbarker2814
      @bobbarker2814 5 лет назад

@Martin Solomon If Christ came to this earth in the flesh, it suggests his body was merely a vessel. In the OT, it talks about Melchizedek as the king of Salem(peace) and priest of El Elyon (often translated as "God most high") Genesis 14:18-20. These are the same titles given to Jesus in the NT. There is no record of Melchizedek's birth or death in the OT either. This suggests that he was a supernatural being at the very least, inhabiting an earthly shell, and since he performed the same ritual serving bread and wine with Abraham, the parallels to Jesus are hard to miss.
In the NT, it says in Hebrews 7 that Christ is a high priest in the order of Melchizedek. That means his priestly authority is not from the traditional Aaronical line. He assumes the mantle that was once assigned to Melchizedek, but if Christ is eternal, that means he was always the high priest. Although I could have chosen my words more carefully, that is why I said Christ was channeling the spirit of Melchizedek.

YAHUSHA the Savior was who was talking to Moses on the mountain. This is why when HE came in the flesh there is no mention of no one speaking with HIM!
