Same! I feel like I would want to upgrade at some point, but I really don't know what else to get. Even after five years, I'm always impressed listening to them.
@Urrmmomm Very happy with them, still. I've moved a few times and gotten to experience them in differently shaped rooms, and they are extremely sensitive to where they are placed--when you get them set up with a perfect equilateral triangle, set the right distance from the wall, you can get them sounding really amazing. I've definitely learned that monitors like these are a gamble based on the shape of the room you put them in, and how far from the wall you have to place them. Some rooms have naturally sounded much better than others without acoustic treatment.
JBL's pro line is really well engineered imo - had a listen to these in a store today and I'm absolutely sold. The tightest/clearest balance I've ever heard from 5" monitors. Delicious.
The difference between xlr and rca isn't just higher voltage. XLR is a balanced signal with an inverted signal on the negative voltage pin instead of going to ground. This is good because the ground isn't part of the signal path and you reduce ground loops because of that. You also reduce noise that is common to both wires because the speaker sees the difference between the signals. With RCA that noise doesn't cancel out because signal is only carried through one wire. Its pretty essential when running long cables.
+Gael Nguyen I have a Peachtree Nova & Im using its DAC & its optical input for video games & movies on my PS4 & TV. Since I first bought the Peachtree though I've felt like I can't find a sweet spot & like the sound might be getting affected by all the voltage in my setup do you think its because I have the Peachtree connected to a mixer via RCA cables & from the mixer to my 2 M-Audio BX5a studio monitors via 1/4 inch cables. I don't know if I should upgrade to these JBL speakers or get rid of the entire mixer & studio monitor setup & buy some JBL Floor standing studio 180 speakers & connect them directly to the peachtree via regular speaker cables?
+C2Gfilms what kind of mixer are you using? Does it accept RCA and outputs XLR? Ideally the Nova would have an XLR output that you can plug straight into the speakers but if you lack that then a RCA to XLR convertor should work. The problem is that each additional component introduces its own noise or sound signature. I would try to skip the mixer and plug the speakers in directly to the Peachtree with a pseudo-differential cable to see if that helps. Google 'neurochrome pseudo differential cable' if you want to read about it.
+C2Gfilms Also bhphotovideo dot com has plenty of cheap RCA to XLR cables. I would try that before considering completely changing speakers. I would post links but RUclips doesn't allow it. One more question, what are you using for volume control? the Peachtree Nova or the mixer?
Gael Nguyen Interesting, Thanks a ton for the help! I think my Mixer is an Instrument/Microphone Behringer Mixer, it has RCA inputs & outputs via 1/4 inch but it doesn't have XLR outputs so thats why I use the 1/4 inch cables to my Speakers, The Nova that I own doesn't actually have XLR outputs but the M-Audio speakers do have XLR inputs so I might try getting to RCA to XLR Cables & plugging them directly from the Peachtree to the speakers & for the volume control I have the mixer set reasonably low & I just control the volume entirely with the Peachtree Nova. I've also had these M-Audio for a while & I've dropped one before so I figured it might be time to upgrade to floor standing speakers since the Peachtree Nova also has regular floor standing speaker outputs & a home theater button.
Regular speakers certainly wouldn't hurt since you remove the mixers and the built-in amps from the system. Plus each of those components have their own power supply which contribute to ground loops. Setting the mixer to low means you need to use the Peachtree at a higher volume setting which could be causing more distortion since you have a tube in there. I would set the mixer to 0dB (or again, remove the mixer)and then just use the Nova at a lower volume range.
such an animated review! i love it. just picked up a pair last weekend. enjoying them so much that I spend my free time watching videos about them when I can't be at home listening to them. good stuff!
I miss my Adams A7x's! Bless one and had to trade them for two that work fine. I went with these JBLs. Nothing will ever replace my Adams though. I can tell. 😔. Have to make these work for now though.
Michael Craver , I just bought a pair from Amazon for $89 bucks each, I'm gonna just stare at the box for a week before I even open them. at that price, I should get a second pair and put them up in my closet for a rainy day.
re watching this video after a long journey - these are my favorite speakers of all time. I spent over 2 thousand dollars in the last 13 months on headphones and headphone accessories only to find out that i am a speaker person :/
I had HD800 and other expensive headphones. These speakers are as good in detail department which is amazing, better bass, better imaging (HD800 sterile) and unbelievable sound stage. For $240 pair these speakers are much better value then any headphones I can think off.
With good DAC yes sir they are. Like Cambridge Audio DacMagic Plus second had with 305s you will get more rewarding experience then HD800 which also require expensive amps.
Voltages will be higher but the magic lies in the XLR pins being signal, signal out of phase, ground. Interference will be equal in each line and cancelled in the sum when the extra signal is re-inverted.
I wonder if you loose this magic if you left the TS-rca plug in? (because it basically shorts the 'negative' signal with the ground, and the speaker does not have an input selector, so I think if you leave your TS-rca converter in you loose the benefits of the balanced signal)
Ihy , ATTENTION............ These are on sale now @ Amazon for $89 bucks each !!!!!!!!!!! I don't need a pair of studio JBL 305s but I'm buying them anyways because of the unheard of price and I'm getting a Nobsound RCA/XLR balanced receiver/switcher with volume control for $29 bucks as well to run my signal source into and to control the volume.
Just got these delivered and connected... Just amazing. The music is "in the room" and not coming from the speakers. I enver experienced that before. Thank you!
Because of you & of this great review, i am the extremely happy owner of two JBLs LSR305 and ever since i got them, i've been rediscovering my favourite music from a new, wonderful perspective. It is by chance that i've discovered your channel & seen this video, which brought the JBLs to my attention - otherwise i would've been oblivious to their existence. So thank you for all the hard work & passion you put in creating these videos.
Got these 2 years ago and I still absolutely love them. Got a 10" sub and found that it was tons of fun to listen to music to, but I agree with Z that the JBL's put out wonderful bass on their own and from a production standpoint are more than enough I think!
Thank you Zeos for making me buy them. I've worked as a JBL promoter for their bluetooth stuff and heard some high end desktop speakers by Bose, Klispch and such. Never have I thought that audio can become this graphic. Always have thought audio imaging is something too exaggerated because I've heard the companion 5s and those sucked. Thank you forever Zeos.
I have the larger LSR308 on a desktop at my office. I do sound evaluations so I have a high end professional DAC feeding these through the XLR inputs. Most of your review applies to the 308s as well as their imaging is unbelievable and likely they provide more low end due to the larger driver and amps. I was a little hesitant buying them at first because $500 mistakes when it comes to using company funds is hard to explain, but I have no regrets. Everyone that has heard them leaves in awe of how accurate they are. As a side note, JBL has a subwoofer (LSR310S) in this series that goes inline between the speakers and the DAC/source. I assume it has a HPF for the speaker outs and the whole system would be adjustable together once you had it balanced the way you wanted it. ANy way, I love your reviews and I'm glad I had the same discovery as you regarding these JBLs.
It is done! Im looking at them. My lsr305s and 310S are here! Ive connected them up with my brand new M-Track 2x2 (which i highly recommend) which is also powering my ATH-AD900x cans (which finally have enough power to sound amazing). Z reviews has shown me the way. These monitors are beasts. You need t get your hands on th lsr310s though my friend I would LOVE to hear your thoughts. Thanks for your help and keep up the good work.
small correction. XLR, in addition to being higher voltage is also a balanced signal. Since the cable carries two inverted signals, anything that is common between the signals must be interference noise. Commonalities between the two inverted signals is ignored and not amplified. This is called common mode rejection and it very effective.
i have got these. Imaging is exeptional. Like you hear the sounds from the outside out of the both speakers. I mean like i am playing a song, something appears on the left and it is from the space beyond of the left speaker. Amazing. I am a basshead, so i will be adding a small sub. If you are not, they are just fine. You have to work on the room acoustics thougt. Just running them off of my phone and i am the happiest person in the world. Like i literally want to get a jbl clothes lol. Thank you Z. I owe you my life. Greetings from Poland
Looking hard and long for a great pair of powered monitors and finally I came across your review which sealed the deal for me to go ahead and purchase these ! I am glowing before I even hear them, tho I sense these are going to blow away and exceed expectations ! I am sure the money spent will be well worth the price ! Like you said, its not even the money ! Thanks for your Great Review Sir !
XLR and TRS are both 3 conductor connections. 2 of the wires are out of phase with each other and they are combined to get the signal Any signal is kept, but any noise picked up along the way affects both lines, and cancels each other out. In addition to that, the grounding is better on them so you can have equipment plugged into different outlets and not introduce ground hum or ground loops. RCA is only suitable for short runs from one component to another and all on the same plug.
Ed Lightbourn I have the LSR305 and LSR310S in my office and it's a fantastic combo. The sub is enormous and heavy and the low end is authoritative. An excellent desktop combo that would probably do well in a 2.1 home theater.
One of the key things here: Inside is a computer program running. It "fixes" the small flaws in a cabinet, crossover, and the drivers. So where the speaker might dip a little on some bass frequencies - it fixes that to flat. It fixes the weirdness from the port shape, it fixes the flaws in the excursion on the woofers. So essentially, other speakers may have better "parts" but they are not corrected. This can sound better than speakers costing over $3000; I have these and the LSR with the 8" woofers. Both are great!
This is the greatest review I've ever seen! And I'm only 2/3 the way thru it. Lol. I ended up really laughing out loud at your unstoppable enthusiasm, humor, and sincerity. I am seriously stuck right now (Rockits, JBLs, Mackies) because test listens in Guitar Center, these JBLs sound almost too good, too revealing, scary even, of my mixes which I don't understand, cause they sound great to me on all the other systems. WTF? I label them as harsh, not warm. I like warm. Yikes, cause all I read is they are the best, period. I need monitors desperately. And now, here is this review that is killing me. :-) Oh dear, what to do now...
Hey Z Reviews. I was reading the Powered Studio guide today on your reddit. This isn't meant to bash your comment or anything, just some notes I've noticed between the two in my experience, and to help someone else in their buying adventure for JBL's. You had mentioned that the LSR308's lack the warm low end punch, in contrast to the 305's (and I would agree to an extent). I bought a pair of 308's about a month ago, and I would have to say that's the contrary (at least for me). I spent quite some time in Guitar Center (maybe too long :D) playing a variety of music (Metal, soft rock, Electronic, folk, etc...), and noticed that the 305's seemed to lack a slight amount (but noticeable) of bass compared to the 308's (being 5" they still had an impressive amount of bass!). I noticed a nice balance in bass, treble, and mids for the 308's. At home, the bass is even more impressive and clean. The heavy rock/metal seemed slightly less muddy on the 305's, but in most songs where the bass player needs to stand out (a number of Rush songs) - the 308's delivered substantially. Though at home it seems to be less "muddy" (if only listening environments weren't such a huge factor in audio setups! lol). I could go on forever about the differences (as I said, I spent wayyyy to much time at CG sampling a variety of music (twice) to decide which to go for)). However, the 308's I think is a great sweet spot, especially if you want a little more volume, and not having to purchase a sub. I'm still learning about the intricacies of audio (and I thank you wholeheartedly for your channel - a great learning adventure). Happy listening!
I am a JBL lover my whole life, they came into there own in the '70 with the L100 Century speakers My first set is the JBL L300 Summit speakers. Powered by 200 watt per-channel Technics class A amp. Back in late '70s thru '80s Technics made killer products.. They still work perfectly for either Bach to Led Zeppelin!!!
I am kind of disappointed that jbl discontinued there LSR 4328p and LSR 4326p. While the JBL LSR305 are good they are no comparison to these both in features and sound quality.
It's almost like an audio track of indistinguishable background vocals that gives the impression of a larger crowd. Similar to what is done for bar scenes in movies.
I know it's a year later, but from someone who's owned 305s with the 310s AND the 308s, and has heard several klipsch monitors at my job at Fry's electronics, i can EASILY tell you I love my jbls better. Yamaha HS8s are considered to be the step up from these, but I honestly think I've found my favorite speakers for awhile now, and it's the 308s. Sold my 305s and the sub and now have 308s cause i don't have room for the sub. The new version came out too, but honestly the original is just as good imo. The new ones are a little different, but if you can find the old ones for a really good price, definitely do it. You really won't be disappointed.
And the sub is FANTASTIC too. It reached super low tones super accurately and I could feel the bass vibrating my feet when things got really deep in a song.
Reading lots of good about the JBL LSR305, ordered them a couple of days ago, found your great review today. BEST REVIEW EVER!!! I'm not laughing unnecessarily, but your videos are the tops that's for sure. And sorry but i cant help but to imagining you to be Jack Black from now on and no matter what you say can change that. :-)
I TRUST YOU!,,,2 mount ago i bought ath m50x,,,based on all great reviews i could find,,,they arived home,,i listen them,,and i was like,,wtf,,where is fckin mid,,why is there high like it needs deesing on every song,,,then i found your video about them ,,,,i was blown away that you,,and only you on internet sad it sucks,,,i was so disapointed on internet comunity,,and sad to my self fck it ,,,i only listen to this guy on z reviews,,,,now that its time to buy profesional monitors,,i found this video,,and boy im glad i did found it,,,cuz i will buy these beasts ,,thank you Z !
These are $229 otd at guitar center with a special promotion right now, going to have to grab a pair and a sub, with stands and isolation pads for a listening / gaming system.
I don't know much about speakers, but i know some people who does and i respect them. These people love these speakers and recommend them. This video was my test for you, so i can understand you actually know what you're talking about. (because i don't know most of the speakers you're reviewing) You passed the test :D
I love your conviction with which you gave this review!! Sometimes people give reviews and even if they endorse/like the item you can't ever get a feel for 'should I do this? or not'. I'm getting these monitors, and your review is why. Well done
Ojan Negahban Yeah I have been schooled on all fronts. For now that is a good enough explanation for people who have no idea. I will correct it next chance I get.
I have a hissing problem. I got a DAC that plugs into my PC via USB but it only got rid of ~80% of the hissing and I saw a decent amount of audio quality loss. I suppose that's what I get for buying a cheap DAC.
This video convinced me to give good speakers a try, and they gave me that magical " A Ha!" moment, the same way my first really great set of headphones did. Thank you for that.
Been enjoying my 502s for more than 2 years now, I don't think I'd change them for 305s. They do have some audible self-noise, but at my listening distance I can't hear it over the PC's pretty-silent 120mm fans (some earlier batches had really bad self-noise but I don't think you can find those anymore unless you take the risk of buying them used). I don't think they sound much different, their only real advantages over the 305s are probably in features that may appeal to some: front-ported, so you don't have to worry so much about how close you are with them to the back wall, and they have a 3.5mm jack input in addition to the XLR and the 6.25mm, so you can easily plug whatever source you want into them with no special adapters. Oh and you do lose the little bass adjustment relative to the JBLs - these only have a +/- 1.5 dB control for the highs. Depending on where you live, the biggest difference may turn out to be the price, with the Tannoys being British and the JBLs Unitedstatesian. :) LE: Judging by a certain badly set up and very dubious comparison I've seen on RUclips of the smaller 402s vs. the 305s I'd venture a guess that *if* there's a sound signature difference between the Tannoys and the JBLs it may be in the form of a slightly more V-shaped response on the JBLs and/or an earlier treble roll-off on the Tannoys. In speculating this I'm also going on what I know of other JBL speakers. But this is mostly based on a bad comparative setup with 4" vs. 5" speakers, so I could still be way off. LLE: The plot thickens: I just saw a comment on DIY Audio Heaven that some batches of LSR305 have some self-noise of their own, so this may not be a differentiating factor working squarely against the Tannoys after all.
It's not such a problem to connect monitors and a sub together. There are a lot of fairly cheap monitor controller units, with built-in DAC's, headphones amps, lots of outputs, etc. that let you plug in a sub as well and control the volume of each separate output, etc.
Just got these with isoacoustics decoupler stand. If your in the market for them, pull the trigger now. My life has gotten better after I sat down and listened to them. They are that good.
JBL fan here too and i own a pair of these 305's and they are great! perfect for audio production on a smaller scale. the 8's have a bigger low end but the mark up wasnt in my need range. the 305's if in an extra bedroom converted apartment studio they are worth every penny
sky Probably. Someone in the know can correct me. I know there are three conductors and the voltage is higher. Not sure exactly how that all works out to produce a better interconnect.
sky What can you say wrong about XLR? There are balanced and unbalanced cables. Balanced are for large studios. I don't know actually, are audiophille cables have better sound for studio monitor/pro speaker?
How would you hook up an active sub to these though? There's no output for a sub on the speakers themselves, is there? Maybe if there was RCA passthrough on the sub you could run the signal from your DAC to the sub and then up to the speakers, but not all subs have that. EDIT: Nevermind, I hadn't watched the video all the way through.
I have these, and mix music on them. I think they sound great, but I feel that they have a pretty significant bump in the 100-200k range that comes through no matter what I play through them and where they are positioned in the room. Do you feel that they are heavy in the lower mid-range, and would it be better to let a sub handle the lower frequencies?
I’ve been mixing with these JBL’s for 6 years and finally went to the back dip switches and cut the bass and pushed the highs because all of my mixes are bright and have no bottom. Once the two switches were changed I heard my shitty RUclips sound and immediately changed the tones of my guitars to compensate. Yes, I was happy with my mixes on them, but that never translated to other playback systems. I am reading the comments to see if anybody else is tired of their mixes being way off.
Hi Zeos. This is ancient review so you probably won't read it :) I'm a fan of your content. I watch it even if I have no interest in the stuff you are reviewing. I recently bought Beyerdynamic TYGR300s based on your review. I love those things. I have those LSR 305 speakers on my desk. If I hook up both Beyerdynamic headphone and LSRs and I take headphones off...the sound stage is almost the same. And the stereo imaging on the speakers is bonkers. It almost feels like that little guy singing in the middle of your screen is in the same position with headphones on and off. I actually did some re-arranging of my home office today and I brought LSR's closer to me. And although I do admit that they work great in the living room....Once you place them in "triangle" about 1 meter away from you....Jesus they sound amazing :)
the mic'd speaker shootout that gave the source file to listen to against dozens of mainstream monitors. Yeah 305 stole the show. Closest thing to source you can get in that size. They have no competition. At all.
Seems to me this is an example of how having an enormous amount of sound engineering know how can make an otherwise simple speaker system sound excellent. The amount of clever design behind these is impressive. The actual woofer and tweeter themselves are nothing special but its how they placed and enclosed and implemented them that create an astonishing product.
Damn, these got a hizzing sound. Saying it's loud might be exaggerating but it's noticable when playing no sound on them or using them on very low volume. I might just have to return these..
great monitors! -10 is good for consumer level pre amps. +4 is good for studio professional level output. love your reviews. Jbl lsr 308s are unbelievable. nice setup you have!
No, sorry, voltage is not the issue about XLR vs. RCA. The main benefit is quite inventive phase cancellation design that eliminates noise, one wire is a ground and two other are the same signal with inverted phase. Google it.
Thanks so much for your helpful review @Z Review, would be great if you can provide the all-metal adapter link. I just ordered my LSR305, so I found this review really informative, thanks.
after about a year i sometimes get a weird pop in my right woofer and i have to say that pop hurts my right ear for a few hours.... im not listening to very high volumes but the pop is way louder i cannot reproduce this pop if i want to but it mostly occurs on songs like hozier lullaby arctic monkeys do i wanna know DANGER - 0:59 do you think this is a problem with the speaker or some ground issue?
Can someone explain why that TRS to RCA 1/4 adaptor that he had plugged in the back even exists. Why would he need to convert to a RCA when the output is a balanced signal anyway. What happens if you put a unbalanced cable in the balanced section via a converter
I have the 305's and some BX8's including KEF R300's and I still plan to pick up 2 of the 308's as they are $199 right now and are an absolute steal. The JBL waveguide is like you're saying, holographic. It's an oculus rift for your ears. I do have 1 small problem with their smaller cousins the 305's though and it's rattling at certain frequencies. It's not a loose screw, or something easy to fix, it's the metal enclosure plate, or it's the port. If I smack it, it stops, but it comes back. Since the 305's are exclusively to amplify my piano, I know exactly which of the 88 keys on it are going to have that horrible rattle and it irks me.
Dude, this review was the last thing I needed before making my mind up. Ordering them in a few weeks. Sold my Rokit 5's a while back, Stopped producing, wanted a Logitech 5.1 System for some random reason, anyhooo. Just one question regarding DAC vs Audio Interfaces. I have a Lexicon Alpha, which I heard was a good Interface to pair with these LSR's. Now, honestly, this is solely for Music listening. I have my set of Astro A40's for gaming which I can switch over to. What would you recommend is a better choice? My Lexicon worked nicely with my Rokits, but I don't need Midi Inputs and Phantom power anymore, Sold all my Drum Pads and Midi Controllers. I just want either a decent DAC or Basic Interface with a Volume knob, maybe a nice little mini visualizer (kidding) and the required ports on the back (I''ll probably connect using RCA or TRS cables, since these speakers are going on my desk and they're going to be within arms reach). I'm just on the search for Audiophile quality fam, and with a decent set of Monitors like these, I'm probably looking for a decent Interface or DAC to compliment them.. Any suggestions? :D
Z, love your vids, man and I'm sure it's been mentioned, but the XLR carries balanced signal - the difference isn't just the voltage. One of the lines is inverted so any noise picked up along the line is then cancelled out when it's reversed again at the speaker end.
Hard to believe but adding sorbothane feet to these 305s makes them disappear even more. Sorbothane is much better than foam blocks or isolating stands. Tried them all.
The -10 dBV vs. +4 dBu setting is for the different standards of "line level" used in consumer audio (-10) vs. professional equipment (+4). With the kinds of amps and DACs you're using it should probably stay at -10 all the time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_level#Nominal_levels
GODSON Official Music Isolation pads. You can get them for free from some retailers, like American Musical Suppl for instance. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MoPADXL
You said the might be a problem controlling the volume when connected to a television. But don't these speakers have their own volume knob? I'm confused.
The volume knob is at the back of each monitor. Kind of a PITA if you're used to using a remote which I find necessary when watching movies due to the variance in volume from quiet conversations to explosions.
I'm about to plug these up to an Emotiva TA 100 as a preamp/ dac for my living room, which is actually an office/ living room area that doesn't need big speakers. I am hoping the setup works as well as it seems like it should for audio quality. I have been playing with the Emotiva dac and preamp with my headphone amp, but I'll have the speakers on Tuesday.
I bought these 5 years ago. Still going strong. They're just amazing.

Gael Nguyen Interesting, Thanks a ton for the help!

You need to get a job selling JBL speakers.
😂😂
dont worry he gets by lmao
re watching this video after a long journey - these are my favorite speakers of all time. I spent over 2 thousand dollars in the last 13 months on headphones and headphone accessories only to find out that i am a speaker person :/
Speakers are way better
I had HD800 and other expensive headphones. These speakers are as good in detail department which is amazing, better bass, better imaging (HD800 sterile) and unbelievable sound stage. For $240 pair these speakers are much better value then any headphones I can think off.
TheRoshan89. Speaker person ? Not a man ?
VALvlog Are these seriously as detailed as the HD 800's? If it is true you would put my mind at lease with audio gear for a very long time.
Years down the line these are my favorite speakers. What a pleasure. Thanks JBL
Bought these after doing alot of research and after watching your video. Was not disappointed. These monitors are truly impressive .
U bought for what? Listening music? İs that good to for listening music? And possible connect tv?
Stop making me want things. :(
ihy Fine, write me a blank check.
he gets $$$$
Ihy , ATTENTION............
These are on sale now @ Amazon for $89 bucks each !!!!!!!!!!! I don't need a pair of studio JBL 305s but I'm buying them anyways because of the unheard of price and I'm getting a Nobsound RCA/XLR balanced receiver/switcher with volume control for $29 bucks as well to run my signal source into and to control the volume.
@@ZReviews what would be a good control panel, reciever/ swithcher what ever you call it for these jbl speakers!?
Thank you forever Zeos.
possibly the best gear review I have ever seen/heard. As heard on my JBL 305's :)
Can you connect lsr305 to TV? If so then how? What models would you recommend?
I get goosebumps with these speakers they sound so good lol
this the comic book store owner from the simpsons?
Worst.. Comment.. Ever..
Great review. Just set up my speakers yesterday. Still learning/soaking them in but I'm very very pleased right off the bat. Money well spent.
No its jack black
LOL
LOL
This is the first review I've seen by this guy and he is HILARIOUS
Thanks for your help and keep up the good work.
i got a 310 too, you can feel the base in your chest with it
Well, they arrived today, and I must say they are awesome! Thanks for the review.
small correction. XLR, in addition to being higher voltage is also a balanced signal. Since the cable carries two inverted signals, anything that is common between the signals must be interference noise. Commonalities between the two inverted signals is ignored and not amplified. This is called common mode rejection and it very effective.
I mix with this speakers! I also use the ATH-M40x... Perfect match!!!
This is the most engaging and fantastic banter I have heard in a long time. Great equipment. SUBSCRIBED!!!
The world is square now lol.
I bought them .. have them a few weeks .. they are excellent ... very accurate ..have a wide range.. very impressed . thanks for demo .
i have got these.
This is the best review of LSR305 model on RUclips)
XLR and TRS are both 3 conductor connections. 2 of the wires are out of phase with each other and they are combined to get the signal Any signal is kept, but any noise picked up along the way affects both lines, and cancels each other out. In addition to that, the grounding is better on them so you can have equipment plugged into different outlets and not introduce ground hum or ground loops. RCA is only suitable for short runs from one component to another and all on the same plug.
So I just bought the 530's. these are better??? Sound wise only. Should I exchange??
Don't exchange. The 530 are better.
I got 530's too,because of Z...And i never regret!
Digging deep back in time to check this review since you keep mentioning these even now!
These do beat anything by KRK. Use it with LG V20 and you've got a kick-ass system. The setting on rear can mitigate any bass bloat
and it shapes it, IT SHAPES IT SO GOOD. Man you got me there...
I think I'll buy them today just because of you
can u review the JBL LSR310S sub?
Ed Lightbourn I have the LSR305 and LSR310S in my office and it's a fantastic combo. The sub is enormous and heavy and the low end is authoritative. An excellent desktop combo that would probably do well in a 2.1 home theater.
I have it with these speakers in a 2.1, takes a bit of adjustment but the sound is beautiful. Definitely worth it if you like your low end
I just bought a pair of these for $120. I can't wait to put them in my studio.
How did you get a PAIR for 120? Were they used or something?
Preston Tymer they are on sale at guitar center I just bought them
I am a JBL lover my whole life, they came into there own in the '70 with the L100 Century speakers My first set is the JBL L300 Summit speakers.
I ordered them today! Afterwards watching this video. You made me so happy dude, can't wait to own them!
Why do I hear so many voices in the background?
he lives in an apartment right on a street
It's almost like an audio track of indistinguishable background vocals that gives the impression of a larger crowd. Similar to what is done for bar scenes in movies.
+Ram Bam above a shop as well
You have to break the Prozac's in half.
Then the voices will go away.
LMWABO!
His house is near the pit of the damned. It's kinda noisy but real estate around there is a steal.
i love this video, and the just complete honesty in it and the love of audio you project in the video. im getting the 308's from zzounds soon.
I know klipsch aren't your thing. You praised the 150's. BUT humor me. These or klipsch r15pm for a bedroom 2.1 setup?
Samuel Molina , very good question. depends on what and how your hooking them up.
Yep, ath-m50's are highly overrated. I once tried a friend's pair and it literally gave me a headache after 5 minutes.
+Maškov Production for me the best headphones in this pricerange are the shure 840 ... but the quality sucks xD
beyerdynamic dt 770 pro
m40s are real beasts
Yep, I tried ath m50x first too, but sent them back straight. Muuuch happier with my dt 770 pro now (y)
These are $229 otd at guitar center with a special promotion right now, going to have to grab a pair and a sub, with stands and isolation pads for a listening / gaming system.
greatest review ever. I turned down HS5s for these. they're almost perfect.
I don't know much about speakers, but i know some people who does and i respect them. These people love these speakers and recommend them.
This video was my test for you, so i can understand you actually know what you're talking about. (because i don't know most of the speakers you're reviewing) You passed the test :D
in the world! in the world!!
I love your conviction with which you gave this review!! Sometimes people give reviews and even if they endorse/like the item you can't ever get a feel for 'should I do this? or not'. I'm getting these monitors, and your review is why. Well done
Your explanation of XLR vs RCA is completely wrong.
Ojan Negahban Yeah I have been schooled on all fronts. For now that is a good enough explanation for people who have no idea. I will correct it next chance I get.
fyi.. the quarter inch (TRS) inputs accept balanced (sleeve, ring, tip) input cables also
do you got an hissing problem?
I have a hissing problem. I got a DAC that plugs into my PC via USB but it only got rid of ~80% of the hissing and I saw a decent amount of audio quality loss. I suppose that's what I get for buying a cheap DAC.
This video convinced me to give good speakers a try, and they gave me that magical " A Ha!" moment, the same way my first really great set of headphones did. Thank you for that.
Can you review Tannoy Reaveal 502 and compare them with these? ADAM A7X is nice to hear them too :)
LE:
Judging by a certain badly set up and very dubious comparison I've seen on RUclips of the smaller 402s vs. the 305s I'd venture a guess that *if* there's a sound signature difference between the Tannoys and the JBLs it may be in the form of a slightly more V-shaped response on the JBLs and/or an earlier treble roll-off on the Tannoys. In speculating this I'm also going on what I know of other JBL speakers. But this is mostly based on a bad comparative setup with 4" vs. 5" speakers, so I could still be way off.
LLE:
The plot thickens: I just saw a comment on DIY Audio Heaven that some batches of LSR305 have some self-noise of their own, so this may not be a differentiating factor working squarely against the Tannoys after all.
It's not such a problem to connect monitors and a sub together. There are a lot of fairly cheap monitor controller units, with built-in DAC's, headphones amps, lots of outputs, etc. that let you plug in a sub as well and control the volume of each separate output, etc.
an audiointerface is a good investion anyways.
I'm thinking of getting a audience id14 how is it compared to scarlet
it's better than the scarlett :D
I'm loving the sudden outburst of reviews. Keep em coming!
Dude! You sound like Philip Seymour Hoffman! Have you thought of acting as a career move? I'm serious. Give it a try. Nothing to lose.
We do need a new Philip Seymour Hoffman :'(
fucking idiot, he's doing a review on monitors, that doesn't make him an actor because his voice sounds similar to another actor.
Actually, you presented a lot of good and useful information in this video on these speakers that others neglected. Thank you.
So good your going to do a giveaway for these yes?hah
danny le You might not be far off. If only more people would join the PATREON www.patreon.com/Zeos
Just got these with isoacoustics decoupler stand. If your in the market for them, pull the trigger now. My life has gotten better after I sat down and listened to them. They are that good.
I just got these and they hiss so loud! How do you guys live with that?
jk fixed it
what do you have for cables and what is your source unit????
I'm an idiot, I had one of the settings on my mixer waaaaaaaay too high. I'm using two XLR to 1/4 to a mixer, and using the USB connection to my PC
bought these babies today! thanks Zeos! sounds soooo goood
dude i had the 305's and then went on and bought the 308's and honestly the 305's are better than the 308 IMO, the 305 have more of a balance
Johnny Percell You are not the first to say this to me.
Z Reviews yea its true bro
JBL fan here too and i own a pair of these 305's and they are great! perfect for audio production on a smaller scale. the 8's have a bigger low end but the mark up wasnt in my need range. the 305's if in an extra bedroom converted apartment studio they are worth every penny
I think you got your XLR facts wrong.
sky Probably. Someone in the know can correct me. I know there are three conductors and the voltage is higher. Not sure exactly how that all works out to produce a better interconnect.
Z Reviews en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balanced_audio
Token ring.. I remember token rings are important.
sky What can you say wrong about XLR? There are balanced and unbalanced cables. Balanced are for large studios. I don't know actually, are audiophille cables have better sound for studio monitor/pro speaker?
Ayama Prantenna Ok! Sorry all. I am going now... :) Cheers.
Just realized that this guys voice sounds just like Peter Dinklage's (Tyrion Lanister) from Game Of Thrones! :D
HES SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE HIM WTF ARE U TALKING ABOUT
Than I guess you need a better audio system my friend. Like those 305's. :D
+Sergej Krynycký I HAVE YAMAHA HS8'S. I THINK I MEET THE CRITERIA, BUT HE STILL DOESNT SOUND LIKE THE MIDGET
Alright alright. :D
Stop screaming dude! You're freaking me out haha.
Just picked these up in white and an Outlaw M8 subwoofer for my desktop.. cannot wait!
306's are next up, you probably know that by now. The deals I'm finding are like 150 for a pair of used LSR 305's.
Hi Zeos. This is ancient review so you probably won't read it :)
I'm a fan of your content.
Got mine today :D they rock....i use them for desktop pc,solo playing, editing and gaming
the mic'd speaker shootout that gave the source file to listen to against dozens of mainstream monitors.
True, mine hiss also, but tolerable.
great monitors! -10 is good for consumer level pre amps. +4 is good for studio professional level output. love your reviews. Jbl lsr 308s are unbelievable. nice setup you have!
how far would you suggest setting them away from the wall?
No, sorry, voltage is not the issue about XLR vs. RCA. The main benefit is quite inventive phase cancellation design that eliminates noise, one wire is a ground and two other are the same signal with inverted phase. Google it.
Thanks so much for your helpful review @Z Review, would be great if you can provide the all-metal adapter link.
I just ordered my LSR305, so I found this review really informative, thanks.
after about a year i sometimes get a weird pop in my right woofer and i have to say that pop hurts my right ear for a few hours.... im not listening to very high volumes but the pop is way louder i cannot reproduce this pop if i want to but it mostly occurs on songs like
hozier lullaby
arctic monkeys do i wanna know
DANGER - 0:59
do you think this is a problem with the speaker or some ground issue?
"Once you can afford these - that's what you get." Probably best review ever dude, haha. So...you like em? Thanks for insight. :)
great review and Im subscribing love your approach was already sold on these but your review convinced me Im doing the right thing thanks man!
What you described about the holographic sound is known as the 'phantom centre' in audio engineering.
i was WAITING for this one! cant wait to hear your thoughts on this :D gonna watch now.
Z, love your vids, man and I'm sure it's been mentioned, but the XLR carries balanced signal - the difference isn't just the voltage. One of the lines is inverted so any noise picked up along the line is then cancelled out when it's reversed again at the speaker end.
+ducksonetime Yeah I should have elaborated.
Well, the interference is avoided with XLRs because of the 3rd wire and the balancing system, right?
and what are those boxes under the speakers? what are they called and where do i buy them?
GODSON Official Music
Isolation pads. You can get them for free from some retailers, like American Musical Suppl for instance.

thanks
You said the might be a problem controlling the volume when connected to a television. But don't these speakers have their own volume knob? I'm confused.
The volume knob is at the back of each monitor. Kind of a PITA if you're used to using a remote which I find necessary when watching movies due to the variance in volume from quiet conversations to explosions.
If you decide to get them locally - Guitar Center has them in store for buy 1 get 1 at 50% off.
How do these compare to the Elac Uni-Fi UB5 in terms of performance per price.
I'd be curious about this too - especially because Massdrop has these right now for $90
I'm about to plug these up to an Emotiva TA 100 as a preamp/ dac for my living room, which is actually an office/ living room area that doesn't need big speakers. I am hoping the setup works as well as it seems like it should for audio quality. I have been playing with the Emotiva dac and preamp with my headphone amp, but I'll have the speakers on Tuesday.
