- Twix. They’ve been at the heart of a debate that goes back more than five decades. Lines have been drawn so intractable that friendships, relationships, even nations have been ruined. Who could forget the Great Twix Battle between the UK and Finland in 1984? No, we’re not speaking of the Left vs. Right debate. We’re talking about the Conflict of Classification that rages to this day. The age old debate: is Twix candy or cookie? Out of respect for those who came before, we will not take a position. Instead, join Claire Saffitz in the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen as she attempts to make a gourmet version of Twix that can hopefully bring peace to this conflict.

in the USA, cake is breakfast. cereal(bready+dairy+sugar=cake) bananabread(cake) pancakes(cake) muesli+sweet yogurt(more sugar than cake)
@@gabbonoo i am so confused why you commented this and why you're trying to say cereal is cake
@@cian1170 i was saying it has similar nutrients and addictiveness. eating cake for breakfast would seem unhealthy to some but those same people would become desensitised because of impulse, laziness, naming schemes, addiction. They end up thinking subconsciously that steak for breakfast is absurd but banana bread is perfect.
😂 Right? Although considering the amount of sugary pastries *I* eat in the morning, breakfast IS dessert!
@@gabbonoo nobody I know in the US would think banana bread is perfect or even a good idea for breakfast, and that steak is absurd. Steak, amongst many other meats are a staple in american breakfast. Honestly, next time she tempers chocolate, they should send her.
I'm wondering whether that would make it better or just worse

- Claire Saffitz 2019
Dude, I thought the same thing
I'm a graduated engineer and working offshore wind turbine technician, and I so fully 100% agree with Claire on left and right making zero sense when considering circular motions.
Want a medal?
Cause your hand or fingers are twisting towards the left or right side of your body. Or think when driving counter clockwise you turn left...clockwise you go right....its really simple
YES!!! Clockwise and counterclockwise I get, but left or right in a circle has never made sense to me. For someone who has been yelled at by a few ex-boyfriends and a grandfather for not understanding “lefty loosey/ righty tighty” when dealing with a circle, it made me unreasonably happy to hear Claire say the same thing.
It makes perfect sense though, imagine you're at a point in the center of a circle, if someone tells you to 'turn to your right' you're always going to be turning clockwise... Hence righty-tighty = clockwise and lefty-loosy = anticlockwise.
I just noticed something about Claire, she talks with her hands so she can’t talk and do a task simultaneously that easily. She usually just stops and focuses on talking. I’m very high

Right in the beginning of video, we see dissonance already. It's like when Disney reveals the obvious villain at the start of the movie.
My favorite part of BA test kitchen stuff - and I mean I know of course it's cut for content, but still - is that the people are so fantastically skilled at taking and giving critique. There's a really collegial give and take, and yeah, sometimes someone's bummed out 'cuz they thought they'd nailed something and someone else says they didn't, but the sense of positive collaboration is really wholesome.

Serious Shakespearian level foreshadowing. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and caramel bubble...
Since when is this show called: "Copying the original"? You're making gourmet, meaning, you're improving on the original!
You're doing a fantastic job, Claire! Don't get too hung up on details! Left and right thumb up!
This is exactly what drives me nuts about this show. It feels like so many episodes consist of her making a SUPERIOR product at some point early on. Then she spends the rest of the episode trying to "tone it down" to match the mediocrity and blandness of the mass-produced thing. Or she'll spend inordinate amounts of time trying to match the look/texture EXACTLY like the original (like how she spent time grating the edges of her shortbread here), i.e. like something that came off of a conveyor belt.
I mean, I get that it's funny to watch her struggle. But I feel like sometimes they make her struggle for the sake of struggle, and it only results in an inferior end product and "recipes" that are of no practical use for a home cook.
@@WastedPo They've got a particular length that they go for in each episode. If Claire arrives at a usable recipe too early they just keep going, trying to match the mass-produced version closer and closer until they have enough footage to edit into a ~40 minute video.
@@WastedPo there are plenty of "gourmet" twix recipes. what makes this show different is she's making the absolute closest product to the original with gourmet ingredients.
@@jessiei6911 I understand. But for me, it limits all that this show can be. If the entire point is to watch a very capable chef "dumb down" the end result to make something indistinguishable from a product extruded from a machine--I mean, that's kind of what we have now.
And don't get me wrong, it's very entertaining. But because of that, the only "angle" this show has is to watch her get exasperated and struggle. And it kind of makes the title of the show misleading.
However, I feel like if they *actually* had her make a gourmet version (like the title implies)--you know, something you'd be delighted to eat if it was offered at a party--then they could have the best of both worlds: (a) Entertain the viewer with the research process and the chemistry she has with her co-hosts. (b) Have a recipe people might be tempted to make.
[By the way, I don't want to come off too strong here. I obviously still love and watch the show the way it is. I just think it could be better. Maybe they could please everyone by having her try to replicate the original exactly and ALSO make a more "homemade/gourmet" version?]
