I was debating between moving to QRO or GDL when I saw your video about the difficulties with finding housing in QRO, I visited GDL in August and fell in love. Still planning on visiting QRO but i love it here.

@blank Yeah totally, dead bodies litter the sidewalks to the point that it’s difficult to walk without tripping over one. Oh, and the highway overpasses are decorated daily with rival cartel members swinging from ropes. It would be better to stay where ever you are.

This video really turned my mind a bit. I was thinking about how I had swayed hard from Guad to Qro lately due to better (less rainy - rainy season and the lower cost of living in qro (especially rent and real estate). Hearing you talk about the GREEN really made me re-think my rainy season thoughts. I actually love rain. I love the ozone smell rain brings and the sound of rain. I love the energy of a rain storm and the feel of it even. I do hear that rainy season turns the roads in guadalajara into slime, but I'm thinking the GREEN and the rain are possibly not really a CON for Guadalajara relative to qro and maybe a PLUS. Certainly not a bad thing in a country that has so many areas suffering from water shortages. Most online cost comparisons peg Guad as a bit more spendy than Qro, but maybe not a big deal in reality. I know good value housing will be a LOT more challenging to find than in Qro where there is such an abundance of amazing, new homes and apartments. It was interesting to hear you talk about the nightlife availability and vibe as much better in Guadalajara. This appeals to me. Flight situation is much better in Guadalajara also. Thanks for your impressions!

Lived in GDL 3.5 years up until 2017. My wife is from there. Some anecdotal observations. 1) People are very polite. I loved that. 2) Food was great and cheap. 3) I struggled with the weather. Even in January when lows are in upper 30s-low 40s, daytime gets back up to mid 70s. Maybe it's the altitude since I grew up at sea level, but once that sun came up there I needed to be in the shade or I would get headaches. That never happened to me anywhere else, and I've been to about 30 countries. 4) You MUST speak Spanish. Maybe it's different if you're coming on a business trip, but to live w/the locals, like I did, it's a necessity. 5) Rainy season in the summer will have downpours the likes of which you've never seen, and the roads here flood like you won't believe. I used to laugh at "silly" people who got stuck in a flash flood while driving...until it happened to me here! 6) The air here is very polluted...too many cars, no emissions standards, city surrounded by hills, etc...7) Outside of tourist spots, there's a lot of trash lying around. 8) Dogs do their business everywhere and folks don't clean it up. Watch your step! 9) Sidewalks(again outside tourist spots) are third world. I actually used to keep a picture on my phone of some random deep hole in the middle of the sidewalk here and send it to my friends back home. They thought it was a gag. It was not. Watch your step! 10) The level of acceptable noise(music) is not to be disregarded. The homes are packed within inches of each other and many times the loud party music wouldn't even begin until after 1am. Asking it be turned down will yield no results and you will achieve even less by complaining to the police. 11) I play golf, but down there it was only for the rich. You will see differences in economic class not seen in the US. 12) My wife commented on this, as she spent some time in England. There's no personal space in GDL. Maybe it's all Mexican culture, but I can only speak of where I lived. I would be standing on a line and the person behind is literally touching you all over your back, legs, what have you. And be careful of the old ladies at the carniceria! They will cut in front of you if you blink. Also, street dogs walk in and out of there. Not hygienic, but when in Rome. These were some random thoughts of mine. My daughter was born there, my wife has a ton of family there so I've been back a few times since but would never consider living there again. Overall, it was an experience and I'm glad I spent the time there. Hope this helps someone.

The things that I love from Guadalajara that you're mentioned to are:
-nomber one, the trees and the plants, it brings so much color and life to the city 🌳; -number two, the people are so gently & nice 😊; -number three, the wheater is perfect, in summer (the best season) rains a lot and becomes more green yet 🌤️. And more to many reasons.
PD. Here, the sunsets in summer are very beautiful.

I’ve lived in Zapopan, part of the Zona de Guadalajara, a bit smaller in population but much larger by area than the city of Guadalajara, for just under 5 years. I actually think that I would say that, in general, the ZMG is a great place to live but maybe not a touristic vacation destination. What can’t be understood by visitors is that many people center their social activities not around restaurants, bars and clubs, but by getting together with friends at each others homes. Sounds a bit boring but is awesome, just takes some time to crack existing social circles. For me, it’s home, great weather (you visited at the very worst time of the year) and for people that like a city vibe, a great place to live.

This GDL series is on point!! I have zero desire to live where I’m gonna be surrounded by a bunch of other expats. Im fluent in Spanish and English and have dual nationality so my plan is to start living in GDL part time. While other RUclipsrs are busy showcasing every coastal city expats are gravitating too GDL gets neglected. GDL is hands down my favorite city in Mexico! I’ve visited this city multiple times to visit my dad who retired here from the states and is living quite well on just his social security. He’s has none of the struggles retire seniors are having to deal with here in the states with the rising cost of living. I personally want to live where there’s culture, museums, the arts, foodie scene…everything a bustling city has to offer and GDL has exactly the vibe I’m looking for and is it! …and I haven’t even begun to talk about the beautiful women, oof 🤣🤣🤣

Is it also a good place for a couple of expat retirees who don't speak much Spanish? I plan on learning more Spanish before we move to Mexico but my partner doesn't learn languages very well (he took a Spanish immersion course in Oaxaca but not much of it stuck). Are there areas where where there is a concentration of English speakers (not Chapala).

.I’m confused by your commentary on the GDL climate as being “tropical” and “low elevation”. The city is located on Mexico’s central plateau at 5000 feet elevation. Always pleasant with low humidity. At the peak of the dry season, brush fires create a smog that is quite prominent. In December, poinsettias are in bloom everywhere. Otherwise I loved hearing your impressions of Guadalajara. I spent my three best years there and met the love of my life. Thanks guys!

I spent a bit over 5 months in GDL after leaving Colombia. So it did not seem so green to me. It has been warmer this spring than usual, though it is a dry heat. Soon the rainy season will arrive. You could literally kayak down one side of Niños Heroes near the Chapultepec glorieta. There is great art for sale on Sundays at the art park in Chapalita. I used to travel almost everywhere using an annual membership to the mibici shared bike system. The via reacretiva on Sundays is a blast. You do need to be careful about taking your cell phone out on major streets. A moto finally snatched my phone from behind on the sidewalk on libertad a few blocks from the templo expatorio. I have heard of people being held up with a pistol late at night in Santa Teresita or in a restaurant in La providencia, but this seems to happen less frequently than the cell phone snatch by a moto. You should do a video at Mercado de Abastos near the yellow arches. Venture out to some different zonas or colonias and you will see much more. There are many amazing parks throughout the city. I am typing this on an iPad, I should list some specific places using a proper keyboard. Hoping that GDL is not overrun with tourists because I enjoyed my time there so much. I plan on applying for my temporary residency

I’m guessing that a guy on a moto snatched your phone (they LOVE iPhones)out of your hands (he was probably watching you for a while) in one of a couple of place (Americana or Centro). There are gangs of thieves looking for unsuspecting victims. They only need a second or two and they are gone. Straight up, if you are on a busy crowded sidewalk, DO NOT have your phone in your hands checking your location, whatsapp or whatever. Duck into a business and then and only then, take out your cell phone.. As they say in Colombia “No dar papaya”.

Just to add more perspective: I've been three times. There first two times I was just in love with the city. It has everything anyone could want. There's plenty of vegan food, swing dancing on Sundays in Chapultepec, museums, etc. However, I agree with someone else's comment that maybe it isn't the best tourist city, but is a great place to live. By the third visit, I didn't feel any excitement. There was nothing else I wanted to see or see again...so I opened myself up for day trips. I was there in June and July all three times and it is quite hot, but a tolerable hot compared to where I'm from (St. Louis, USA). It cools off in the evenings. By my standards, it isn't a very pretty city; everything is gray, not your typical, colorful city/town. I really like Zapopan. It was very green (Guadalajara didn't strike me as green, just this particular area). I did feel safe in Chapultepec at night. El centro felt a little sketchy at night, but that was just a feeling; I didn't see anything. I agree with being more laid back; I went to salsa night at Hotel Riu (very fancy hotel) in my overalls (like jean overalls, not something nice). Nobody batted an eye. I also agree that people are extra friendly. I made several good friends while there and everyone on the street was welcoming.

It's a great city! I like it so much more than I ever thought it would. It doesn't hurt that we have friends here either 🤓

Guadalajara its a metropolis, Queretaro is just a conservative pueblote. Sorry but its true. I have lived on both. Rainy season is brutal in Guadalajara be careful.

Is Guad still filled with flies? We used to talk about eating "moscas fritas"; the flies were everywhere and we could not eat outside without keeping our food and drinks covered.

Haha I haven't noticed there being more flies than other places in Mexico!
