THE FACT THAT NORA IS INSPIRED BY AN ALMIGHTY THUNDER GOD MAKES ME SO HAPPY Because... Well, she's... Nora.... AND SHE WILL SMITE YOU WITH HER GRENADE HAMMER AND THE POWER IF THE GODS
Emerald could possibly allude to either Cleopatra or Aladdin, as Cleopatra was often associated with emerald stones and Aladdin was a thief who stole for food, much like how Emerald's backstory was
Our school is doing Aladdin the musical. There is a part (well 2) where he says "Egyptian jade fitr for a princess" and gets in trouble. Irrelevant but who cares
@@elijahsanders3191 Why? Jaune is like 6'1-6'2 and when they were on screen together Pyrrha was basically as tall as him, granted she was wearing heels but she can't really be shorter than 5'10.
Ironwood is also based off of the The Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, in the story, the Tin Man has a longing for a heart, and in Volume 3, Qrow talks about Ironwood, saying, "I'm not sure he even has a heart" referring back to his inspiration to the Tin Man
+MegaSoniczone Yep Ozpin, Glinda, Ironwood, and Qrow are all Wizard of Oz themed. Also Torchwick is clearly taken from Clockwork Orange in character and design, not a Disney character.
+Amanda LaPage (Farenorenda) Agreed. Also, fun fact, Neo was inspired by a rule 63 cosplay of Torchwick. Given the matter of her umbrella, though, I suppose they may tie her to Mary Poppins eventually.

+Joe Francis The physical design yeah, but the character is definitely Candlewick, after all his name comes from *Roman* *candles* and his last name is Torchwick.
Sun and Wukong have a few good similarities. Sun has Ruyi Bang and Jingu Bang, the gun-chucks that combine into a staff. Wukong had a staff called Ruyi Jingu Bang, which was capable of changing size. Sun defies the law while Wukong actively defied the gods. Sun is from Haven. Wukong lived in Heaven for a while (bit of a stretch but I like it). Sun's Semblance is Via Sun, he creates clones of himself that he can manipulate. Wukong had the ability "Shen Wai Shen Fa" or "Body outside of body", the ability to transform his own hairs into fighting clones of himself.
+Xander B Another connection would also be Sun's ability to instantly tell that Blake was a Faunus. Sun Wukong, in the story, could see the truth behind illusions or disguises and actually used that to his advantage/mischief.
Xander B The ability is known as "huǒyǎn-jīnjīng" (火眼金睛) or "fiery-eyes golden-gaze". Journey to the West has actually affected and influenced a vast amount of anime and eastern media in one way or another. Much like how Sun Tzu's, "The Art of War" still has a great impact on modern day warfare. Also, fun fact, the Japanese name for Sun Wukong is "Son Goku".
Xander B End of Episode 15 Vol 1. "I knew you looked better without the bow!" -Sun But in all honesty, with all the F'd up crap from Vol 3. I'd don't think anyone would remember a detail like that. Even me.
Iron Wood is also inspired by the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz, Qrow is inspired by the Scarecrow, and Tai Xao Long is the Cowardly Lion who lost the will to fight after Raven left and Summer died. Salem is based upon the Wicked Witch. Salem, Massachusetts being notorious for the largest witch trials in American history.
Ruby is also inspired by Rose-red, the sister of snow-white. All of the main cast of 8 are related to flowers, the most entertaining of which is Thor being related to juniper. Also, suns inspirational book is "The journey to the west" which makes sense considering he traveled from haven (an eastern kingdom) to vale (the westernmost kingdom)
In one of the first scenes with Cinder it zoomed in on her anklet & made a noise loud enough for us to focus on it. If you know the true story of Cinderella, then you'd know plus the name Cinder itself is dead give away. There's multiple references on some characters that are just more than coincidence.
Although ruby is based on red riding hood, going with the wizard of oz theme, she could also have some parallels to dorithy, being that she went from signal to beacon so spontaniously, which could be refference from going from Kanzas to Oz. also the fact that she has Zwie which could easily be based off of toto
i'm ridiculously happy that you mentioned blake being partially based off the of beast part of beauty and the beast too. a LOT of people overlook that. honestly, adam ended up being a little bit of gaston as well as beast lmao.
***** rt has alluded to other franchises before soooooo also, there's the fact that you completely missed that the "adam ended up being a little bit of gaston" thing was a joke about his personality so. lmao. i'm not even saying they based him off of him, i'm LITERALLY just saying his personality ended up more akin to gaston from the disney version which is almost universally the most well known.
Nevermores, from the poem, The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, My reason behind this? The nevermores look like ravens, and the Raven from the poem, always says... "Nevermore,"
if the grims are also based of from fairy tales and other stuff (wich I think is the case), then you already said the nevermores, the wolves wich I dont remember the name could be from any tale a wolf appears (but I think they are from little red riding hood), the double headed snake I know there is a giant double headed snake in mithology (I dont remember what mithology nor what specific myth), the wyvern is obvious, the beetle I dont know but I think I have an idea (something I forgot, that may be the case), the ursa from that constelation or star (I dont know wich it is) the mother ursa (I think was the name), the gorilla is harambe ( :P I'm joking but with all the similarities including how it died I wouldnt be surprised), the gohst that posseses objects thing I have a lot of ideas from mythology but I cant remember the names, the boars I dont know, the elephants I dont know either, the gryphos might be from you know grypos from mythology or the ones that are also part horse from harry potter (since the ones on RWBY have some horse features and look a lot alike those in harry potter), and I dont remember any other if there were to be a lion one I could see it being based from that giant lion that appears on the bibble
Perhaps, but there's probably a specific tale out there with a wolf or werewolf with the name Beowulf/Beowolf that is a more direct origin of the Beowolves.
Roman is based off clockwork orange and Ironwood is the tin man since all of Ozpin's group match up to the wizard of oz. Its soon he has feeling for glynda and is chasing after his heart. He is also part machine lol
A few you missed: Blake's book about "a man with two souls, each fighting for control over his body"/The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde The White Fang/The Black Panthers Emerald Sustrai/Either Aladdin or Esmeralda (Hunchback of Notre Dame) Ironwood/The Tin Woodsman from Wizard of Oz (and possibly also Robocop) Neopolitan (Neo)/Neapolitan icecream and Mary Poppins Raven Branwen/Branwen (from the Mabinogion, a book of Welsh collection of myths and stories) Qrow/The Scarecrow (Wizard of Oz) Winter Schnee/The Ice Queen (excuse me, do you have any idea who you are talking to?) Neon Katt/Nyan Cat "The Girl in the Tower" (one of the fairy tails Pyrrha listed at the request of Ozpin)/Rapunzel Taiyang Xiao-Long/The Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz(and possibly also The Hungry Tiger from the same series) Also, keep in mind that characters don't necessarily have just a single allusion. Ruby seems to draw on both Red Riding Hood as well as Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. Taiyang is probably both the Lion and Tiger from the Oz book series. Qrow is both the Scarecrow from Oz as well as Bran the Blessed from the Mabinogion (see Raven above). Salem seems to be an "omni-witch", representing most 'wicked witch' and 'evil sorceress' characters from stories. Lastly, the latter half of Volume 3 is an allusion to Game of Thrones because fuck everyone's happiness.
Am I the ONLY one who realised that Headmaster Leonheart is the cowardly lion? The guy is literally a coward and a lion faunus for crying out loud! >_< (no clue who Taiyang was inspired off, though...)
Ironwood is based on the Tin-man form wizard of oz. tin is a type of Iron and Wood is an allusion to the tin-man being a woodsman. Also Qrow says " I'm not sure he has a heart" regarding Ironwood Speaking of Qrow, he might be based on the Scarecrow from wizard of oz, since he might not "have a brain" from all the drinking😎 Taiyang might be based on the Cowardly Lion, but we haven't seen much of him
Something else to note about Qrow is how in the story of the Wizard of Oz, after the wizard leaves, Scarecrow takes over has the leader of the Emerald City. Similarly, Qrow tells Ruby that he will have to pick up where Ozpin left off.
Ozpin:Wizard of Oz Glynda:The Good Witch Cinder (or Salem):The Wicked Witch of the West (I assume) Qrow:The Scarecrow Ironwood:The Tinman Taiyang:The Cowardly Lion Ruby and Zwei:Dorothy and Toto (I think) (remember, in the end of volume 3,Ruby sets off going to one of the regions, this is a reference to Dorothy going off to see the wizard of Oz,also,Dorothy's biggest enemy is the Wicked Witch,as Ruby's biggest enemy is Cinder
Of course Adam isn't the beast, he's jetstream Sam from MGR. He uses litteraly the same weapon, and SPOILERS: He cut's of a protaganist's arm in the prolouge.
There are some that you've gotten deep, others left forgotten, others even went to other sides and parallels, but it was a good vid, not gonna lie. Ironwood is also considered to be the Tinman, just look at his half robot. P.S. you said "Last Summer of Rose" on one part xD
+DarkSpartan853 Thank you for the compliment, and tbh there was a part earlier where i said "last summer of rose" but i caught it and re-recorded it, I cant believe i said it again and didnt notice it lol
Stuff you left out: As others have mentioned, Ironwood is the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. Neptune's trident for obvious reasons Sun's semblance is also a reference to the Monkey King Lampwick was only his name in the Disney version. His original name was Candlewick. Zwei - Ein from "Cowboy Bebop" Russel Thrush - Will Scarlet from "Robin Hood" Qrow Branwen - Possibly the Scarecrow from "The Wizard of Oz" or maybe just a black bird theme between him and his sister Raven Emerald Sustrai - possibly Aladdin Neo - Neapolitan ice cream and possibly Mary Poppins Anyway, from Volume 4: Salem - Wicked Witch of the West Dr. Watts - Dr. Watson from "Sherlock Holmes" Oscar Pine - Once again, the Wizard of Oz, duh! Ghira Belladonna - Bagherra the Panther from "The Jungle Book" Kali Belladonna - Kali the Hindu Goddess Jacques Schnee - Jack Frost. Also note that the color theme in his first name comes from Jaune (same as Mr. Arc), which means yellow in French. This means his name can also be translated as "Yellow Snow." Klein Sieben - all 7 dwarves from "Snow White and...", well, you know. Ren has new parallels to Mulan in that his village was once attacked by invaders, which allowed him to unlock his semblance that allows him to blend in with his surroundings. Qrow has a bad luck semblance that further parallels him with actual crows. Volume 5, so far...: (SPOILERS) Leonardo Lionheart - The Cowardly Lion from "The Wizard of Oz," not Taiyang as previously speculated. This further leads credence to the idea that Qrow is only based on the bird, as the pattern suggests that the inspiration for the Scarecrow is the yet to be introduced Headmaster of Shade Academy in Vacuo. Sienna Khan (mentioned once in Volume 4) - Sher Khan from "The Jungle Book" Vernal - It's the adjective form of the season of spring, such as the vernal equinox. Coincidence, I think not.
This is awesome, and your other ones are also.... To the point, paced well, nice transitions and effects, awesome videos, Man... The only one here I might argue at all is Ironwood, or tin woodsman, as someone else here says Qrow even asks if he has a heart. This is about as tenuous as your thoughts, the only reason I would lean toward Tinman is that the rest of the "Ozluminati" being mostly characters from the Oz stories. Nothing says that a character cannot have more than one inspiration though, so it may be both are right. Qrow can be the Oz Scarecrow for a few reasons, yet also the Welsh word Branwen translates as "blessed crow"
ironwood is the tin man from wiz of oz fyi. torchwicks also alex from clockwork orange. look at his weapons name. its another clockwork orange referance.
+Diego Meira I always thought Adam more resembled the Phantom of the Opera (especially after what he did in vol.3). So, you have my full support on Blake being both Beauty and Beast, +EruptionFang. Not only does it make sense, but it frees up his inspiration for my personal head canon.
Mallengar look at DMC3 's version of Vergil and Adam. They have similar hairstyles, both of them use a katana as their weapon of choice, they use the exactly same fighting style (iaidö), and even have similar personalities. I strongly believe that he was used in the conception of Adam.
Mallengar I'm not saying he's not inspired by The Phatom of the Opera (i'd be blind if I were to deny it), but whenever I see him fighting, the vision of a redhead Vergil pops in my mind.
Great job EruptionFang! I like your presentation of the inspirations in this video, it's a great resource to point people towards when this topic comes up. I'd also argue that many characters have more than one inspiration, and some inspirations may have more than one character. The Wizard of Oz stories make a good example of this. Ozpin, Glynda, Qrow, and Ironwood have their obvious connections. Tai may be the missing cowardly lion from that set, with Summer Rose possibly filling the role of Dorothy. Salem fills the slot of the Wicked Witch, with the tie in to the witches of Salem. But team RWBY also has parallels with Oz, maybe kind of as a secondary/background inspiration. Ruby is very much compatible with Dorothy, with some personality traits, her name parallels the ruby slippers of the movie, while her silver eyes parallel the silver slippers from the original books. Zwei goes with Toto. Blake, the cowardly lion who, according to her own troubled words in volume 2, always runs from trouble and has a semblance to match, but really wants to be brave. The scarecrow and the tin woodman are flip sides of a coin - mind vs emotion. Weiss, smart but with a troubled family background, starts out with a heartless or unwelcoming demeanor, but is really lonely and looking for people to care for and care about her - looking for her heart/emotions. Yang, the passionate and care free person who needed to learn some self control (not letting her search for Raven control her, etc.) and still needs to learn to not run blindly and angrily into danger, could be said to be seeking a brain. I don't know for sure if the crewby are doing that deliberately, as secondary inspirations for their main characters, but I kind of doubt it is a coincidence. Either way, it highlights some depth to the characters in this story that they can draw parallels with multiple beloved inspirations. My hat's off to Monty, Kerry and Miles and the rest of the folks at Rooster Teeth for doing this so well. It is part of what makes me such a fan of this show, and provides enough depth to make it enjoyable and worthwhile to analyze it and look for these connections.
+Jim Stoner Thank you for your compliments, it means alot to me, and as far as each character having multiple inspirations, I absolutely agree. While doing my research I did see that some of them were inspired by a couple characters, but while writing this video it seemed a bit too confusing when all put together so i went with the "main" inspirations (or what i thought was the main inspiration)
Iornwood is the Tin Man in the wizzard of Oz. Qrow says "sometimes i think he doesnt have a heart." Referancing how the tinman longed a heart. Also later revealed how Iornwood is half machiene.
Ren has 2 inspirations. Nora is Thor and Ren is like a brother to her. He is the Loki to her Thor. Lie Ren. Loki is the god of fairy tales and lies. His color scheme gives away the Loki side as well as his weapons, as they look like the horns of Lokis helm. Green, gold, black, and pink are Loki's colors.
RT: "Ok, so team RWBY is inspired by fairy tale characters, and team JNPR is based off of historical/mythical heroes. What about team SSSN?" Monty: "LOL, K-pop band" Also, the way you ended the video was SOOOOO OMINOUS xD
I originally thought Pyrrha was based on Athena but akhilles (idk how to spell) makes more sense. I never heard his story but I heard in another vid that they both were struck in the heel before death. Also I understand that ren would be based on mulan but you're right, there really isn't much resemblance. However, Ren's past has been slightly revealed in volume 4 so far so maybe we'll get more similarities. But I'm glad they added someone based as Mulan.
3:42 OMG I knew it! When I heard about joane of arc, I was fascinated. She was the first historical figure to ever really interest me. Which leads me to thinking, if jaune is based on joane, then at some point, he must develop some sort of change or receive some sort of power that makes him as strong as the others. Also, Ruby eats cookies and likes them because little red riding hood also likes cookies. Both Blake and belle likes books. Yang's obsession with her hair is based on Goldilock's trait of golden hair.
Ozpin's little circle of secret huntsmen are all actually making nods to Oz. Ironwood is based on the TinMan for his association with machinery, as well as his cold but noble nature which parallels the character's desire to have a heart. Qurow Ruby's uncle is the Scarecrow, and then there is Salem. we don't know much about her yet but she has that Disney villain sorcerous thing going on and it seems she sees Ozpin as her arch nemesis. so definitely the Wicked Witch of the West.
comenting a lot after the video has came out, but there is one character missing and i really felt like pointing it out Emerald Sustrai and Esmeralda from Hunckback of Notredame not only does Emerald has a very gipsy-like look but also their names both have the same meaning. there is also the hole associaion between Esmeralda and using magic to fool her target's (since in the tale, Frollo believed that she had used magic to seduce him into liking her) which can be related to Emerald's semblance
I believe your references for Blake could be sharper. Bella Donna is pretty woman in Italian. Her primary influence Beauty or Belle: Belle is handsome in French. Applied to a woman, beautiful. Blake is a name from Old English with a dual meaning; both dark and pale. Alternately, black and white. Very much an influence for her design. Also representing her dual nature as you describe. I believe that she is solely the Beauty character. In the tale Belle is quite lonely because she has difficulty connecting with people. That same loneliness is what gives her the empathy to understand and ultimately fall in love with the Beast. In RWBY Blake is as a faunus is wrapped in the cause of equality. Initially that is the cue for her tie to Adam. I think an interesting place for the story to go would be for Blake to demonstrate true love to Adam and that love to cause him to switch sides.
10:42 THAT CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD, 😂 THAT IS THE LONGEST NAME I'VE EVER HEARD OMFG! Imagine someone telling Ozpin that's who he's based off of, but saying the full name.👌
here is a one for you, Qroq can shift into a crow, much like how Zeus can shift into a raven. Qrow also seems to have a high amount of influence much like how Zeus was the king of the gods. and send ravens to see for him.
+greenmax360 zeus never had an affiliation with ravens. however, you might be thinking of odin who had two ravens that brought information from Midgard (earth) to him
I may sound dumb, but I thought Mr Oobleck was inspired by, real Oobleck (mix of water and cornstarch, a liquid that can resist strong impacts) although I never made a connection. And now I know why…
fun fact all the inspirations of team jnpr share the trait of all dying horribly jaune= john of arc: burned alive nora= thor: killed by the world serpent jourmungand while he killed it at Ragnarok pyrrha= acchiles: arrow to the heel ren= mulan: suicide
I'm pretty sure that Ironwood is supposed to be the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz. But I believe that he's also Captain Hook from Peter Pan; both of them have the name James, both are militia leaders, and both have metal hands!
Xander F I heard that tyrian could also be based on captain hook: he is dressed like a pirate and his weapon and his stinger can make us think of a hook (especially his weapon). Also he's fighting against a group of kids.
I always thought that Peter and Oobleck's personalities came from Alice in Wonderland. Peter I thought was the Walrus and Oobleck the white rabbit. I did not know they came from Dr. Seuss and Peter and the Wolf cool.
Are you saying that, the supporting charachter who uses a bow staff, can create copies of himself and goes on a journey with the main charachter to help them on THEIR mission, is NOT that similar to sun wu kong? Granted he isnt quadruple immortal but that is hardly a large lack of similarities
+John Walker yes, these are both correct, those are the only two I had a problem with. Also Velvet and all of her team can be related to some type of desert.
Is it bad that I got excited when Kuranosuke appeared o the screen? I love Princess Jellyfish too much. But also as a fan of Big Bang, T.O.P who Neptune's design is based off of is an awkward dancer, hence Neptune's dancing issues.
Something interesting about Blake being belle is Blake's names. "Blake" means black in Old English, while "Belladonna" means "Beautiful lady" in Italian. Roughly in the middle between England and Italy, is France, what country is Beauty and the Beast based in? France!
No i thought Pyrrha Nikos is inspired by The Little Mermaid *Ariel*, 'cause look at their eyes ots green and the hair was red and a half of Wonder Woman because of the gear but Pyrrha is using a Spear
wasn't Ironwood shown to he a living robot aswell? Somewhere in Season 2 or 3 he is shown fighting a Grimm. He's torn up and on his arks you can see metal. Also why he was so quick to jump to the Headmaster of Beacon when Penny died in the tournaments. 10:00 says that Penny was the only living robot.
8:13 you could have mentioned his semblence which matches sun's feat of producing clones with his hairs and how he was able to find out blakes secret at first glance relating to sun's ability to see through illusions.
Ironwood is the tinman without a heart or smth from the wizard of oz but I think everyone knows this by now jdfhsdf just love coming back to ur old videos!
There's...several that you missed. - Jacques Schnee is a counterpart to (1) Jack Frost, and (2) the evil queen who was Snow White's stepmother (in fact, we later learn that he married INTO the Schnee family rather than carrying the name himself). - Winter Schnee may likely pull from the Huntsman of that same story, who helps her escape in some versions. Similarly, Winter gives Weiss the chance to escape Atlas at the end of Season 7 before Ironwood's troops could catch her. - Emerald is Aladdin - she's primarily a thief that relies on trickery, and her weapons are a pair of scimitars (swords associated with the Arabic region). - Qrow Branwen is mostly based on the Scarecrow from the Land of Oz. He seeks intelligence for Ozpin (much like the Scarecrow sought a brain), and his constant alcoholism seems to be a way to numb his mind. He and his sister Raven also represent Huginn and Muninn, the ravens that report information to Odin. - James Ironwood is primarily based on the Tin Man. Remember, the Tin Man was a woodcutter (hence the surname Ironwood) who had to replace parts of himself with machinery to survive (he too has cybernetic parts). In fact, we learn later that his Mettle Semblance toughens his resolve to the point that he may seem "heartless". - There are some others with no actual story inspirations, like Neo Politan (Neapolitan ice cream), most of Team CFVY (various sweets), Team FNKI (Internet memes), Taiyang (Spike Siegel), and Zwei (Ein).
Great video! But I always thought that the Ozluminati were all based off characters from the Wizard of Oz. So like you said Glynda is Glinda the Good witch and Ozpin and the wizard of Oz, but I reckon that Ironwood is the Tinman, mainly because he's a cyborg, and also because theres this one line that glynda says; "i wonder if he even has a heart", which fits the tinman's story. That makes Qrow the Scarecrow, which doesnt have a whole lot of parallels, and i would even go as far to say that the cowardly lion would be Tai Yang.
I also see elements of Elsa from Frozen in Weiss Schnee, and elements of both Goku and the Bride (Kill Bill) in Yang. Surprised you didn't mention the obvious Ruby and Yang elements, that we first see Ruby fighting wolves, and the club where we see Yang enter has a DJ wearing a bear costume. Also, the flashback scene where Yang goes looking for Raven, she finds and old house in the woods with monsters hiding inside.
2:33 i beg to different. adam has two persona's within him the revolutionary he once was and the radical he is now and it seemed like blake was his medium to keep him in check as well as his cause. after blake left him and cinder basically leashed him, the beast was able to roam free without consequence. this could be illustrated with the book we first see blake read about the man with two soul each fighting for dominance over the body.
Pyhra means "fire" in (ancient) greek (and Nikkos is a popular greek male name. Ok, that's not very important...) Also, Neptune is a Greek god. Romans adopted the idea of the sea god alongside with many other gods of the Greek mythology.
THE FACT THAT NORA IS INSPIRED BY AN ALMIGHTY THUNDER GOD MAKES ME SO HAPPY
Because... Well, she's... Nora....
AND SHE WILL SMITE YOU WITH HER GRENADE HAMMER AND THE POWER IF THE GODS
nORa...thOR. Lol
i always figured she was inspired by the queen of hearts from the alice tale. Eccentric, mostly focused on her wants and needs and her heart stuff
But if Nora’s based off Thor, then who is Remanent’s version of the Queen of hearts?
Zwei is a reference to Ein from Cowboy Bebop. Ein means one in German while Zwei means two. Also they are both corgis.
+Steven Sarmiento though Zwei is the first grey corgi I've ever heard of, I totally agree.
+Steven Sarmiento Eins is one.
And his name was shortened from Einstein to Ein.
+Steven Sarmiento Hmm... thought Zwei was inspired by Toto from "The Wizard of Oz"..
***** or "two, too." if you like.
I would say Zwei is inspired from both Ein and Toto. He is also the most important character in the show ;)
"She can handle them, until she can't" stop it, Brandon
Everyone thinks they're going to have a good day until they don't
That got really out of HAND....
"slow clap" brilliant!
how do you clap with one hand though
I have a few more for Cinder and Cinderella.
1.Both want a happy ending
2.I think that Salem is a reference to Cinderella's Godmother.
Makes you think though.
I don't know much about Cleopatra but Aladin's parents died similar to what happened to Emerald.
Wait a minute...
Nora is shorter than Ruby?!
So is Weiss with out the boots
I am personally more concerned with the fact that Pyrrha is taller than Yang
And Neo
Pria and Priu YT well Neo is known to be really short
@@elijahsanders3191 Why? Jaune is like 6'1-6'2 and when they were on screen together Pyrrha was basically as tall as him, granted she was wearing heels but she can't really be shorter than 5'10.
You forgot the best character inspiration ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Ag Au That is a great one!
Also Mary Poppins do to her umbrella and flying away with it.
+yukiandkanamekuran And maybe Napoleon bc Neo is really short?
lol i was about to comment about that
So Neo is based off ice cream, Napoleon and Mary Poppins? Wow
Given the matter of her umbrella, though, I suppose they may tie her to Mary Poppins eventually.
actually its a bit of both.
Amanda LaPage I actually thought he was based off of Romeo Candlewick from the original Pinocchio!
EditDeath She is alluded to Mary Poppins. In the volume 3 finale she was seen floating down with her umbrella

Jay En Jee And i quote "i'll lick her"
Also since Phyrra got shot the heel i instantly thought of Achilles.
I think Weiss's dad fits the role of the Evil Queen better.
sun wukong is based of sun wukong not sun goku
I'm pretty sure Roman's also at least somewhat based on Alex from A Clockwork Orange.
+Joe Francis The physical design yeah, but the character is definitely Candlewick, after all his name comes from *Roman* *candles* and his last name is Torchwick.
+Jared Sardella Yeah, pretty obvious on that one too.
Joe Francis Yes, he is.
Joe Francis he is
roman is based off if only candlewick
+Xander B
Another connection would also be Sun's ability to instantly tell that Blake was a Faunus. Sun Wukong, in the story, could see the truth behind illusions or disguises and actually used that to his advantage/mischief.
Ezio Altair good point. I didn't catch that. I just figured it was like, faunus sense or something
Ezio Altair I know there's a lot of influence still, especially Goku. I just didn't notice Sun's ability to spot a faunus
Xander B End of Episode 15 Vol 1.
"I knew you looked better without the bow!"
-Sun
But in all honesty, with all the F'd up crap from Vol 3.
Salem, Massachusetts being notorious for the largest witch trials in American history.
was just about to comment this before i saw this.
Huntr J Don't forget that the Ruby Slippers were originally Silver in the books.
i'm ridiculously happy that you mentioned blake being partially based off the of beast part of beauty and the beast too. a LOT of people overlook that. honestly, adam ended up being a little bit of gaston as well as beast lmao.
***** the beast wasn't called adam in the original either. rwby draws inspiration from multiple versions of stories.
***** rt has alluded to other franchises before soooooo
also, there's the fact that you completely missed that the "adam ended up being a little bit of gaston" thing was a joke about his personality so. lmao. i'm not even saying they based him off of him, i'm LITERALLY just saying his personality ended up more akin to gaston from the disney version which is almost universally the most well known.
cinderfell Isn’t Ilia Gaston?
North Wynd33 That's such a cool idea
Nevermores, from the poem, The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, My reason behind this? The nevermores look like ravens, and the Raven from the poem, always says... "Nevermore,"
if the grims are also based of from fairy tales and other stuff (wich I think is the case), then you already said the nevermores, the wolves wich I dont remember the name could be from any tale a wolf appears (but I think they are from little red riding hood), the double headed snake I know there is a giant double headed snake in mithology (I dont remember what mithology nor what specific myth), the wyvern is obvious, the beetle I dont know but I think I have an idea (something I forgot, that may be the case), the ursa from that constelation or star (I dont know wich it is) the mother ursa (I think was the name), the gorilla is harambe ( :P I'm joking but with all the similarities including how it died I wouldnt be surprised), the gohst that posseses objects thing I have a lot of ideas from mythology but I cant remember the names, the boars I dont know, the elephants I dont know either, the gryphos might be from you know grypos from mythology or the ones that are also part horse from harry potter (since the ones on RWBY have some horse features and look a lot alike those in harry potter), and I dont remember any other
if there were to be a lion one I could see it being based from that giant lion that appears on the bibble
Xero0 True! ^.^
Perhaps, but there's probably a specific tale out there with a wolf or werewolf with the name Beowulf/Beowolf that is a more direct origin of the Beowolves.
Hawkkiller2 True, maybe we could look it up?
Lol did you know po used to run around yelling never more at the children to make them happy
Roman is based off clockwork orange and Ironwood is the tin man since all of Ozpin's group match up to the wizard of oz. Its soon he has feeling for glynda and is chasing after his heart. He is also part machine lol
Torchwicks design is based on Alex from Clockwork Orange
Clearly! That right👍
Mixed with The Joker and Hazama
A few you missed:
Blake's book about "a man with two souls, each fighting for control over his body"/The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
The White Fang/The Black Panthers
Emerald Sustrai/Either Aladdin or Esmeralda (Hunchback of Notre Dame)
Ironwood/The Tin Woodsman from Wizard of Oz (and possibly also Robocop)
Neopolitan (Neo)/Neapolitan icecream and Mary Poppins
Raven Branwen/Branwen (from the Mabinogion, a book of Welsh collection of myths and stories)
Qrow/The Scarecrow (Wizard of Oz)
Winter Schnee/The Ice Queen (excuse me, do you have any idea who you are talking to?)
Neon Katt/Nyan Cat
"The Girl in the Tower" (one of the fairy tails Pyrrha listed at the request of Ozpin)/Rapunzel
Taiyang Xiao-Long/The Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz(and possibly also The Hungry Tiger from the same series)
Also, keep in mind that characters don't necessarily have just a single allusion.
(no clue who Taiyang was inspired off, though...)
Pyrrha nikos “well this is awkward”
Thank you! I kept reading comments about Taiyang being the cowardly lion. I believe he's Dorothy (even though he's male). He has Zwei who is Toto.
@@battleangel911 Oh Yeah... that would make sense. I really didn't think of that.
Ironwood is based on the Tin-man form wizard of oz. tin is a type of Iron and Wood is an allusion to the tin-man being a woodsman. Also Qrow says " I'm not sure he has a heart" regarding Ironwood
Speaking of Qrow, he might be based on the Scarecrow from wizard of oz, since he might not "have a brain" from all the drinking😎
Taiyang might be based on the Cowardly Lion, but we haven't seen much of him
Correction: Tin is a type of Metal
Something else to note about Qrow is how in the story of the Wizard of Oz, after the wizard leaves, Scarecrow takes over has the leader of the Emerald City. Similarly, Qrow tells Ruby that he will have to pick up where Ozpin left off.
Well, that's who Taiyang is based off. If you look at his tattoo, it shows the outline of a lion's pair of eyes
@@crumbtheraven leo lionheart is the cowardly lion
"Tin is a type of Iron"
Me: *is dead*
Ironwood is Tinman.
Qrow: Sometimes, I'm not even sure he has a heart.
Taiyang is probably the Cowardly Lion.
And Zwei is Toto.
+Númenorean Nazgûl and Ein
And Qrow is the Scarecrow.
+Númenorean Nazgûl Thank you, Cowardly lion is the only one I was missing
Ozpin:Wizard of Oz
Glynda:The Good Witch
Cinder (or Salem):The Wicked Witch of the West (I assume)
Qrow:The Scarecrow
Ironwood:The Tinman
Taiyang:The Cowardly Lion
Ruby and Zwei:Dorothy and Toto (I think) (remember, in the end of volume 3,Ruby sets off going to one of the regions, this is a reference to Dorothy going off to see the wizard of Oz,also,Dorothy's biggest enemy is the Wicked Witch,as Ruby's biggest enemy is Cinder
Of course Adam isn't the beast, he's jetstream Sam from MGR.
He uses litteraly the same weapon, and SPOILERS:
He cut's of a protaganist's arm in the prolouge.
Ozpin = Oz
Glinda = Witch of the North
Zwein = Toto
Qrow = Scarecrow
Ironwood = Tinman
Ruby and Yang's dad = Lion
+Whaleping Davis Zwei* and the dadman is called Taiyang
Salem = Wicked Witch of the West
Glinda = Good Witch of the South
+Whaleping Davis I think the biggest tell for Ironwood being the tinman is the fact that Qrow says "sometimes I wonder if he even has a heart."
+Nobody Likes U. who the fuck is Salem? o.o
+Whaleping Davis Zwei is Ein from Cowboy Beebop. Litterally. Zwei means 2 in German. Ein means one in German.
This was very interesting, but what about EMERALD BEING LINKED TO CLEOPATRA WHO IN FACT WAS CURSED BY AN EMERALD! Says in the wiki.
_DaymTobias_ Or Aladdin
There are some that you've gotten deep, others left forgotten, others even went to other sides and parallels, but it was a good vid, not gonna lie. Ironwood is also considered to be the Tinman, just look at his half robot.
P.S. you said "Last Summer of Rose" on one part xD
+DarkSpartan853 Thank you for the compliment, and tbh there was a part earlier where i said "last summer of rose" but i caught it and re-recorded it, I cant believe i said it again and didnt notice it lol
lol
Stuff you left out:
As others have mentioned, Ironwood is the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz.
Neptune's trident for obvious reasons
Sun's semblance is also a reference to the Monkey King
Lampwick was only his name in the Disney version. His original name was Candlewick.
Zwei - Ein from "Cowboy Bebop"
Russel Thrush - Will Scarlet from "Robin Hood"
Qrow Branwen - Possibly the Scarecrow from "The Wizard of Oz" or maybe just a black bird theme between him and his sister Raven
Emerald Sustrai - possibly Aladdin
Neo - Neapolitan ice cream and possibly Mary Poppins
Anyway, from Volume 4:
Salem - Wicked Witch of the West
Dr. Watts - Dr. Watson from "Sherlock Holmes"
Oscar Pine - Once again, the Wizard of Oz, duh!
Ghira Belladonna - Bagherra the Panther from "The Jungle Book"
Kali Belladonna - Kali the Hindu Goddess
Jacques Schnee - Jack Frost. Also note that the color theme in his first name comes from Jaune (same as Mr. Arc), which means yellow in French. This means his name can also be translated as "Yellow Snow."
Klein Sieben - all 7 dwarves from "Snow White and...", well, you know.
Ren has new parallels to Mulan in that his village was once attacked by invaders, which allowed him to unlock his semblance that allows him to blend in with his surroundings.
Qrow has a bad luck semblance that further parallels him with actual crows.
Volume 5, so far...: (SPOILERS)
Leonardo Lionheart - The Cowardly Lion from "The Wizard of Oz," not Taiyang as previously speculated. This further leads credence to the idea that Qrow is only based on the bird, as the pattern suggests that the inspiration for the Scarecrow is the yet to be introduced Headmaster of Shade Academy in Vacuo.
Sienna Khan (mentioned once in Volume 4) - Sher Khan from "The Jungle Book"
Vernal - It's the adjective form of the season of spring, such as the vernal equinox. Coincidence, I think not.
I think Roman Torchwick is more like Alex from a clockwork orange than lampwick from pinocchio
I think he is based from both, there are many characters that have more than one isnpiration
Curti Burm definitely based on Alex, both are agents of chaos if you think about it
Definitely the look of Alex to a T
Awesome video!
Side note though, Roman Torchwicks physically design was also loosely based off Clockwork Orange ^^
ironwood is the tin man from wiz of oz fyi. torchwicks also alex from clockwork orange. look at his weapons name. its another clockwork orange referance.
don't forget about Adam being a lot alike Vergil from Devil May Cry, and Cinder having the same powers as Cinder from Killer Instinct.
+Diego Meira
I always thought Adam more resembled the Phantom of the Opera (especially after what he did in vol.3).
+Diego Meira
No argument here.
I just can't get past how similar his relationship with Blake is to the Phantom and Christine. Plus, there's the mask.
I always compared ozpin and glynda to dumbledore and mcgonigall
Glynda immediate reminded me of mcgonagall
Also, for any who can't figure it out,
Neo's Inspiration= Neopolitian Icecream 😉
Totally. My friend hates her. I don't prefer her...she's okay, I like her design.
More on the Nora Valkyrie comparison to Thor:
Nora = Norse? (maybe)
Valkyrie = the heavenly warrior beings who escorted fallen warriors to Valhalla
RT: "Ok, so team RWBY is inspired by fairy tale characters, and team JNPR is based off of historical/mythical heroes. What about team SSSN?"
Monty: "LOL, K-pop band"
Also, the way you ended the video was SOOOOO OMINOUS xD
8:12 son wu kong in the novel has a journey to the west. son wu kong in rwby to the east.
Sun's Semblance is spawning two golden clones of himself similar to Sun Wukong the Monkey King'a power to shed his hair to form clones of himself
I thought Ironwood was the tin man, Leonardo the cowardly lion, and Oscar I feel is like the scarecrow having to share his soul with Ozpin
Amanda Buffington I thought Oscar was Dorothy
another name for mercury is Quick silver
Ozpin's little circle of secret huntsmen are all actually making nods to Oz. Ironwood is based on the TinMan for his association with machinery, as well as his cold but noble nature which parallels the character's desire to have a heart. Qurow Ruby's uncle is the Scarecrow, and then there is Salem. we don't know much about her yet but she has that Disney villain sorcerous thing going on and it seems she sees Ozpin as her arch nemesis. so definitely the Wicked Witch of the West.
comenting a lot after the video has came out, but there is one character missing and i really felt like pointing it out
Emerald Sustrai and Esmeralda from Hunckback of Notredame
not only does Emerald has a very gipsy-like look but also their names both have the same meaning.
there is also the hole associaion between Esmeralda and using magic to fool her target's (since in the tale, Frollo believed that she had used magic to seduce him into liking her) which can be related to Emerald's semblance
another one for the ruby parallel is that in the trailer, she is fighting beoWOLVES.
N Maple Adam better or I'm writing a death note for him. XD
Or her tie with White Fang 😉
Ironwood's also keeping with the guardian's similarities to Wizard of Oz. Qrow is the Scarecrow, and Ironwood: the Tin-man.
This is one of my favorite rwby videos I love it so much, thank you. You've earned a sub.
DUDE! With Velvet, you completely left out about her weapon! The weapon became real, like the toy became a real rabbit.
10:42
THAT CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD, 😂 THAT IS THE LONGEST NAME I'VE EVER HEARD OMFG!
+greenmax360 zeus never had an affiliation with ravens. however, you might be thinking of odin who had two ravens that brought information from Midgard (earth) to him
yeah they are pretty much the same god from different mytholgies though hahaha
+greenmax360 meh personalites really dont match zues is a dick odin is lesser but still a dick
Yassss bigbang I didn’t know that I was in shockkkk
T.O.P inspiration of Neptune
I may sound dumb, but I thought Mr Oobleck was inspired by, real Oobleck (mix of water and cornstarch, a liquid that can resist strong impacts) although I never made a connection. And now I know why…
I've learned so much
Then my job is complete
A lesser known fact about Cinderella, in earlier versions of the story Cinderella is a vengeful witch.
Gotta love Brothers Grimm
XD the pun.
fun fact all the inspirations of team jnpr share the trait of all dying horribly
jaune= john of arc: burned alive
nora= thor: killed by the world serpent jourmungand while he killed it at Ragnarok
pyrrha= acchiles: arrow to the heel
ren= mulan: suicide
Another similarity about Penney in Pinocchio they both want to be a real person
Monty Ohm you were a psychotic genius. Thank you for making this show. (and thank you Kerry and Miles for continuing)
Never thought that Captain Hook could be here too
Great video!
I knew half of them but the ones I didn't know sure makes me have a stronger love for RWBY!
I always thought that Peter and Oobleck's personalities came from Alice in Wonderland. Peter I thought was the Walrus and Oobleck the white rabbit. I did not know they came from Dr. Seuss and Peter and the Wolf cool.
Dude !!! You got me shook ! Man, they used before to put their heart on Rwby but now I can’t say that.
Great video ❤️
Nice back round music sound like the songs are from fallout 3 and kingdom hearts.
Sun does reference journey to the west. He says, and a quote. "This is a regular journey to the east"
I really like your videos.
+Kuzuhara Hiroki Thank you!
+EruptionFang do u yow know who Emerald is based off of. I'm thinking a thief but I'm not sure which one
+MrChaostwister Aladin?
Are you saying that, the supporting charachter who uses a bow staff, can create copies of himself and goes on a journey with the main charachter to help them on THEIR mission, is NOT that similar to sun wu kong? Granted he isnt quadruple immortal but that is hardly a large lack of similarities
I'm disappointed you didn't talk about Neo who is one of my favourite characters from RWBY.
Mary Poppins
+Marcos Leon XD
shes basically badass mary poppins but in the color of neopolitian ice cream
+While you were reading my name I stole your memes Sounds about right, ha ha.
Also, Napoleon - she's the shortest character in the series.
The Butler in the scheene household is inspired by the seven dwarfs from snow white
I thought ironwood was the tin man and qrow was the scarecrow so the secret council would be made entirely of characters from the wizard of oz
Also Ruby=Dorothey &
Zwei=Toto
The Movie Reviewer I'm pretty sure Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion are the heads of the other two schools
Alex Stark The cowardly Lion/ Professor Lionheart. We have heard nothing about the Vaccuo school
I am very impressed, this was a damn good video dude well done.
Love your videos eruption i am a new subscriber
+Dan Cyu Thank you very much!
I'd argue that Neptune is based off of prince charming because everyone calls him cool.
I thought Ironwood was based off of the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz, and Qrow might have been the Scarecrow
+John Walker yes, these are both correct, those are the only two I had a problem with. Also Velvet and all of her team can be related to some type of desert.
+1AWKWARDfrog1 No, Coco Adel is based of Coco Channel‚ the fashion icon and brand
Is it bad that I got excited when Kuranosuke appeared o the screen?
I love Princess Jellyfish too much.
But also as a fan of Big Bang, T.O.P who Neptune's design is based off of is an awkward dancer, hence Neptune's dancing issues.
Sun wukong is based off of Sun wukong, what a surprise 😂😂
you have earned my subscription! This was really interesting to watch!
Tyrian is Marvel's Scorpion
Both have Scorpion like tails
Both are insane
Both are associated with poison
All scorpions are associated with poison.
Roman Torchwick draws his design from A Clockwork Orange.
Lie Rwen is based off of Monty Oum himself
but mostly mulan
*ahem* he was voiced by him too omg may be r.i.p.
Something interesting about Blake being belle is Blake's names. "Blake" means black in Old English, while "Belladonna" means "Beautiful lady" in Italian. Roughly in the middle between England and Italy, is France, what country is Beauty and the Beast based in? France!
Haha lol team suun/sunn/ssun idk I forgot but
They come from Big Bang I’m telling my cousins XD
Team RWBY has fairy tails
Team JNPR has cross dressing
Team SSSN (sun) has K-pop (I think...)
No i thought Pyrrha Nikos is inspired by The Little Mermaid *Ariel*, 'cause look at their eyes ots green and the hair was red and a half of Wonder Woman because of the gear but Pyrrha is using a Spear
you sound alot like rock Lee from naruto
Hell Yeah....i Think
7:57 Oh geez another Journey to the West inspiration
Yang should lend ruby a hand... Oh wait
+Poketrevor too soon..lol
Boo 👎
wasn't Ironwood shown to he a living robot aswell? Somewhere in Season 2 or 3 he is shown fighting a Grimm. He's torn up and on his arks you can see metal. Also why he was so quick to jump to the Headmaster of Beacon when Penny died in the tournaments. 10:00 says that Penny was the only living robot.
Also Sun's semblance is similar to Sun Wukong's power to duplicate himself.
8:13 you could have mentioned his semblence which matches sun's feat of producing clones with his hairs and how he was able to find out blakes secret at first glance relating to sun's ability to see through illusions.
Thanks for this video, I really enjoyed this very informative and well made!
From the thumbnail I thought this was game theory
Yang thought she could be ready for anything until she couldn't-eruption fang, amazing writing
I had speculated most of them. Especially for Penny, after I heard her line "I'm not a real girl."
wouldn't crow be scare crow from wizard of oz it suits the theme of ozpins team? same with ironwood being tin-man?
Loved how you explained everything.
Subbed.
Both Sun Wukong and his inspiration can create clones of themselves. :)
Ok, that's not very important...)
Also, Neptune is a Greek god. Romans adopted the idea of the sea god alongside with many other gods of the Greek mythology.
