- It snowed so was time to go out and get into it. Shoulder season....sloppy snow for some of the trip as we got rain as well. The snow was up to 14 inches deep back in the BWCA 30 miles North of Ely, MN.
Backpacked with two sets of brothers...the McKendrys and Finkelsteins. They invited me along. All of us do circus and that is a big part of our life.
3 nights of awesome, yes I said awesome, slumber in my Wilderness Logis's Snipe hammock and my new custom Burrow and Incubator from Hammock Gear. www.hammockgear...
Oh so warm and snug.
We ate well...walked long on snowshoes and embraced the chill.
Whoooooooo Buddy))))))
Shug
Beautiful Shug. Just beautiful.
T'was...t'was.
Thanks for taking us along Shug!!
Y'elcome.
Shug where do you get the audios for your intos do you play them yourself I would love to add them to my playlist the original songs just dont do it for me like the free flow does!
They are just jams of me and my friends picking......soundcloud.com/seanemery2/sets/shugs-jams
shugemery Thanks for the link man, Your a man of many talents. You've inspired me to camp in winter time, but also in many other ways. Life can be negative an your content is such a warm an welcome distraction, especially through hard days. Thanks a million an whoo buddy from Western WA! O.D
I love your hike videos. They are extremely calming.
Great to hear that. Calm on.....
minihjalte couldn't agree more
I could stare at the water going by all day. Ahhhh, thanks Shug!
Yes...that was beautiful. I have only seen something like that once and was too wet and tired to appreciate it. Thanks Shug!
To noisy. for sleeping @@geraldhenrickson7472
Got the day off of work today. No better way to start the day than with a sweet Shug winter backpacking video. Still waiting for the 70 degree weather to go away here in VA. Until then, I vicariously live through your videos. Thanks for taking us along!!
Glad you came along....
Awesome! Thanks for taking us mom-robe-wearing couch-ers with you! In the late 80's my friends and I from Northland College in WI did a 3 day canoe trip up there. An old-timer told us the lakes would freeze that night, which we thought was just quaint. 3 lakes in, one of which was Shell lake, we camped. We wake to frozen lakes! It took all we could muster to "canoe"/play ice-breakers to get back to our cars! What fun we did have! Maybe one of your fans will remember- maybe this will help- Christine got hypothermia badly and it took all we had to bring her back to life in the Wilderness! Pete D.---
nice story. Thanks for sharing friend.
I wondered if that happened to anyone. Ice was fairly thick. Thanks for that.
Man that’s a good crew of young hikers to carry on the hiker tradition. Thanks for sharing the deep thoughts and Shug thanks for sharing the journey.
Old guys need to hike with the young and visa-versa.
Congrats to you and your comrades for securing Sector 7. I am now stoked for winter Nordic skiing. Those were great bivouac
sites along the stream and the Lac, especially, listening to that stream all night, priceless! Love your film work and your bluegrass oeuvre is without equal. Thanks!
What a great early Christmas Gift. A 30+ min vid from friend Shug. Whooo Buddy!!
Thank you.
Quote "Having Breakfast in a Christmas Card" probably one of your best quotes to date....I think that lad needs to carry mouse traps in his kit along with his Scooby snacks LOL Great vid shug and quite the philosophical bunch of guys there too :-) thanks for taking us along. regards Maff
Yeah...Shaggy attracts the rodentia!
I have grown to like winter hiking and hammock hanngin.....thanks for the adventure.
Whooooo Buddy)))
Truly inspirational! Thanks for sharing.
Set up the hammock in the backyard last night. Woke up to a little fresh snow on the ground. Came in and watched a video of good ole Shug out in the snow covered, piney woods of northern Minnesota. Life is good.
Nice to wake up to that yessir!
Yet another GREAT jaunt into the North Woods.
22:27 looks like something you would see under the microscope at a fertility clinic!!
Loved this one Shug and I have not laughed as hard as I did when you said something like “if you ask these boys to share some deep thoughts with you, it won’t take a lot of your time”. I’m around 10 years younger then you but I find the exact same thing with my son’s friends and wonder if we were like that back when we were that age or if young guys are different these days. Made me smile like all your videos do.
They are learning the rules of camera. I tell 'em to chirp in but they go mute...haaa.
We are all the same yet different.
Home away from home!.
Nice camp Shug
Nice that the young whipper snappers waited up for you on the trail!
Hey....I gotta stop to film!
I love the winter trips in the snow! Greetings from a lightly toasted N. Georgia.
I'm from the same place.
The McKendry and Finkelstein brothers were great! Shug, give yourself a nice participation ribbon, buddy.
I am twice their age.....
Great stuff Shug's, thanks gentleman great vid!
Mucho obligato.
Gnarly day ... but it brightens right up with a new Shug video! Loved the shots of the water flowing under the ice (had to watch that a couple times) and what a finish! Pears with cheese like me momma use to make!Thank ya pal ... made my day.
I so love Pear salad! with Dukes mayonaise of course.
WELL OF COURSE DUKES! As a matter of fact ... me thinks it's a law ... or should be!
What a grand tour of fun and such. Thanks for this video Shug and thanks to your compatriots for standing in as they did. The snow hammocking looks like so much fun.
That fog was amazing. As always, great job with the narration.
It sure was amazing and a true gift.
Shug camping in the snow looks like fun. My son and I can't wait until it snows in Alabama to sleep in our hammock. ❄️🌨
The rain wrecked all our snow::::::)
You guys are SOOOOO lucky with the amazing places you have to go to & great weather too
Truly!
Another great adventure with" shug"keep them up see you next time Thanks 👋🏼😬
See you then then.
Excellent winter backpacking video! The video footage from the lake was amazing. Hammock camping in the winter is my favorite. The only problem that I have is finding someone to come with me. Most people think that I'm crazy, but I enjoy it.
Most would never winter camp. We have the woods to ourselves.
I'm with you. Some of the most enjoyable hunting, camping, and backpacking trips I've had were in the freezing cold. The secret to success is staying dry. I love it when the land is blanketed in snow... the air is so still and quiet... oh the call of the wild!
Merry breakfast from the christmas card Shug! Thanks for the journey fellas.
Merry it was!
Enjoyed this snowshoe video, hope to do some in the near future. Nice to see you casually mention gear throughout the vid and see what's working for the group. Thanks SHUG!
Really good to hear that~~~ Whooooo Buddy))))
the Ole Bob Dustrude folding buck saw ... :)
Good Vid Shug ~ Thanks
It's quite the saw.
i take care of my aging mother and love to camp in snow but cannot do it ! Thank you for your help in letting me see the worl d thruogh your eyes and continue on Lifes journey.
Your a good person to do that for your Mom.
shugemery I find it a challenge but also a great Honor and Privilege. Thank you for your kind words.
Looks like a hard slog in Shug and Co. another great video though, thanks for letting us in :)
Not hard but energetic!
Winter is upon Northern Minnesota. Way to embrace the wet snow. Seems like you had a heck of a trip.
Snow was right on the line. The rain wrecked it.
Wow! That fog, man! Really made the trip worthy! Awesome and thanks for sharing!
Thanks for taking the time to video this. Great stuff !!
Yessir.
looks like you did the hustle on the Souix hustler trail. Another great video. Thanks Shug.
Hustled all we could.
great video shug.. love it !
Thank you.
Amazing video, some great laughs too! Thanks.
Many thanks.
Looked great out there. Thanks for the video!
Y'elcome>>>>
I've been sitting on this one, brewed up some coffee and fetched some shortbread...all set!
Not a chatty group, but some solid hiking on the way out. That fog rolling in off the lake was just gorgeous. Really Shug, it was gorgeous! You said it "Christmas Card".
This is one of those you just have to be there. I wanted to be there and not in my mammy's bath robe. Soon enough my friend...
I posted a running video a month or so ago, in case you missed it. I don't talk in it, it was more for the team.
Out of shortbread now, so signing off
All secure in sector 7!
You on shortbread already?! Love it. That lake fog came in ever so slowly. I'll look for the video. You take care James.
Loving all those views! Man Shug, your "woo buddy" at 18:55 had me rolling in laughter. awesome vid, thumbs up.
Whoooooooo Buddy)))))
That looks like an awesome trip. Wish I could have been there with you.
Was amazing and just goes by too fast.
shug, love da vid, wonder sometimes why I do it too. but... I sit here wit my shug t shirt on and a cold home brew beer as the snow softly falls outside my cabin.... tinkin... gawd that is nice. so keep em coming....
Sounds lovely!
At 31:38, the lake and branches really look like another primitive alien planet :) Really cool
You know it's going to be a good when Shug's in your Sub List! Whooo Buddy!
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Wolf Tracks, 'That's Comforting'!! - you have me puzzled with that one Shug.
Another Great Vid, as per usual.
I like knowing they are out there....part of why I go. To romp in thier nieghborhood....
I made a Boundry Waters trip in canoes back in the 1970s . Boy scout troop . There was a fire ban when we started . 2 days after leaving they lifted it because we made it rain every day :) It was the beginning of dehydrated food but we ate pretty good. I still have a can of dehydrated water on the shelf in case I need it.
Whooooo Buddy)))))
Thanks Shug, enjoyed the traipse thru the woods.
Hey TallPaul!
Yet another fantastic video sir! Sure do enjoy your pickin'. I play mandolin and guitar myself
Thankee feller and pick on and up!
Hey Shug what is circus? Anyway thanks for takin us along i truly appreciate what u do. And i really enjoy ur bluegrass intros!
This is some circus with us rehearsing.....ruclips.net/video/yZVRVnVKCrM/видео.html
Thankee and thanks.
Young at heart.
Great video! Nothing like reconnecting with mother nature, more people should give this a try. We love your energy and positivity! Keep up the great videos they are uplifting and relaxing 😀 *T4S*
You make me so jealous! I wish more of my friends liked backpacking:(
Been canoeing up in BWCA but never considered a winter hike. Nice to see the other side, thanks Shug... Lou in Maine
Long walks in but so quiet and wonderland-ish....
Great trip!
Thanks for the video..
Yessir. I was.
long time viewer, first time commenting... love your vids Shug. I'm going out for a one nighter in my amok with a few friends for my 40th birthday next week, hopefully will get some low temps, but unlikely to get snow as in the UK... keep up the good work buddy :-)
Where you been Mate? Hope you have a terrific trek and Sainbury sausage.
really enjoyed the video. OMG pears, dukes mayo, with cheddar on lettuce. Haven't had it in years and was just thinking about that last night. TASTY
Pear salads....a family favorite!
Beautiful ! Me thinks a Warbonnet Superfly Tarp would have been the ticket
I have one. Took my DIY last minute. Like to live on the edge! haaaa
Little trick for ya on those "bend downs" - I end up smacking the tree with a pole/axe to knock all the snow off. It takes the weight off the tree and usually the tree comes up enough to walk under. By the time I'm on my way back out the tree returned to normal. WOO BUDDY! Nice snowshoes! Happy Trails
We did do some of that but they had many branches and were pretty well set. Set some free but it took time to release most.
Whoooooo buddy!! Nice video shug!
I thank ya' for that.
Yeah Shug thanx for another one of your beutiful adventures.... "old man slippers" ??? you got to be kidding Shug.... come on I wear Birkenstocks at the very least, and my moms old gown is in the bin :)
Whatever makes the hooves comfortable!
wonderful...
thanks shug.
My pleasure...really.
Thanks for taking us along Shug, I see your once again using the Snipe, is the Snipe becoming your go to hammock? I know I love mine.
It has been my go-to of late. Really comfy.
What a change from the cities, I should head up there too :O
Less snow there now...rain killed it.
Don't worry, Trumpy promised that global warming is a Chinese invention (like gunpowder!)
THANK YOU FOR GETTING BACK TO ME! HOPE YOU HAVE A SAFE MERRY CHRISTMAS! YOUR GPS THAT YOU TAKE WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO HIKING / SPOT I THINK / MAY I ASK WHAT COVERAGE OR PLAN YOU PAY FOR ? IHAVE THE EXPLORER NOT SURE WHICH TO GET . PLUS THIS YEAR I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO THINK ABOUT CAMPING WITH OUT THE TRUCK. THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME SOMETHING TO DREAM ABLE! ENJOYED VERY MUCH!
I have the inReach Explorer and use the Saftey Freedom Plan...ruclips.net/video/Dp-kcY7VUo0/видео.html
Love your videos, keep up the good work! I'll sit on my phone and check everyday to see if you've posted s new video.
Thanks for that Chandler.
Beautiful views on the river, loved those wolf tracks and loved the path on the beaver dam. At 11:30, can you explain more on how to buy/make your insulated camp boots?
I buy them.
@@shugemery ok because I thought you improved them in a specific way. Thanks!
Shug: Noticed you were backpacking and not using the pulk. Just a change of gear or was there a reason for picking one over the other. Great vdo of the air bubbles travelling "snake like" under the ice. Both vdo and sound were great . Looks like new camera is working out to be a keeper. Thanks again for this vicarious travel adventure.
Was not sure what snow depth would actually be. Also, temps did not call for a "pulk load".
Awesome video Shug! Found your peanut butter pop tarts on closeout for $1.29. Hope that doesn't mean they're being discontinued.
I think they have...horrors!!!!
I am not certain they were EVER legal in the state of Utah. I have never found them anywhere. Sniff...
Well, it looks like Poptarts have a shelf life 6-12 months beyond the date. Let me know and I'd be more than glad to buy them and ship them to you as a thank you for the wonderful videos you make.
Thanks but I got a stash!
Awesome trip.
It was!
Very inspiring!
Thankee.
Another instant classic by the Shug'ster.
The gentle patter of rain made me sleepy...where did I put mom's old robe?
Glad a was in the hammock with that patter.....
Awesome video chap! Looked a nice walk!
Have you considered coming over to the uk with your act, you'd be perfect at the Edinburgh fringe
Thought about it but it is tough to get in. Thankee.
shugemery well you would be welcomed with open arms mate you have a big following over here
stephen keane i'll second that
i had to come back and watch it again. i'm house-bound. dewey has it made out in the yard.
Get on out I say>>>>>
Shug : A Man of All Seasons
Especially Winter. I look good in a parka!
Eh, the parka look is ok. That spring/fall man capri fashion is ultra trendy!
I have the shins for that look:::::
Another fun video. How did you know I was in my moms robe. Ha
When you say you know them from the circus, what do they do? I always liked your practice videos, maybe you could share what they do?
Here we are rehearsing.....ruclips.net/video/yZVRVnVKCrM/видео.html
I am wearing my Lester River Boreal shirt as I watch as I watch this. I shirt you knot....
Warm as can be I reckon:::::
beautiful! sure wish the snow would really come to the twincities already!! also...what was that interesting fruit and ?cheese? item at the end? whoooobuddy!
An emery family Thanksgiving Pear Salad. Hillbilly sorbet! Pear halves, dollop of Dukes mayo, extra sharp chedder cheese grated fine, marachino cherry and a sprinkle of paparika. sound nasty but oh so good!
+shugemery ok...well I enjoy interesting and new foods. I'm gonna have to give it a try! Thanks shug!
Did you make it to the cascade? I still need to make it to Shell. Looked like a beautiful trip. thanks again for sharing.
No...it was either gonna be Shell or Devil's Cascade. We went Shell for the view.
awe man, I can't wait for winter to get here, us PA folks got a hang planned for the end of Jan. Question, what water filter are you using and how do you keep it from freezing?
We used filters but kept them insulated in packs at night. Right at freezing. Also just boiled water over fire. Right on the like for water.....tricky!
I'm working up the courage to buy an under quilt. I'm thinking the little features make the difference. What are your thoughts? Amazing trip and footage. It's almost like we are there. Thanks as always!
I think they are amazing but some folks struggle to get good fits. I have a series on vids on that...ruclips.net/p/PLahaAdtfX9ZKzSYSBm3mBYSPGHjdyGqsL
I have Solomon's too. There for my Philmont trek with the scouts.
Just love them there boots.
Looked like a great time. ZZ.
Sure was. Thankee.
I just got my warbonnet winter tarp I can't wait to get out in the snow. BTW....What's the food at the end? looked good
An Emery family Thanksgiving Pear Salad. Hillbilly sorbet! Pear halves, dollop of Dukes mayo, extra sharp chedder cheese grated fine, marachino cherry and a sprinkle of paparika. sound nasty but oh so good!
Pap-Tarts!
Excellent adventure! I would do it with 4 burly young men, but they would have to carry me. I don't have Mama's tattered robe any more, so I enjoyed the vid in my underwear on the couch. Slog on, Shug. Live what I dream!
Sure was beautiful out there in the Snowy wonderland!
Looks like they have some sabre toothed mice in them there hills. lol
Mesh eating rodents.
Love your videos Shug!
How do you manage to keep your feet dry in such slushy conditions?
We don't. Boots get a bit damp...wet by last day.
Booties in plastic at night.
Looks fun and beautiful! 20:45ish... Like having breakfast inside a Christmas card....wooooo buuudddyyyyy. What camera are you filming with it?
....Sony Cyber Shot DSC HX80
Outside of waking up in my hammock, some of my favorite mornings are when I see a new Shug video in my inbox. Thank sir! I'm headed out for a 3 day this weekend here in Missouri. It won't be as cold and zero snow, but a good time will be had.
Question- what was the dish at the end of the video?
That dish is a family tradition for Thanksgiving and Christmas...Pear Salad.
Shug wood love to go out hammock camping in the summer sometime
West central Minnesota
The trails await you.
Bacon makes everything taste better!
Bacon makes bacon taste better.
awsome vid as always shug . wonder for those city folks maybe a vid on what kinda of things can be under that snow where you are walking in the woods anything right ? hate to see some one try doing what you do and fail maybe even bad .... take care bud .. †
Mainly rocks. Lots of rocks. It's a trail!
Other than being heavy how did they like the boreal shirts? Nice to see the winter wonderland.
They could not quit saying how warm they were and how they loved them.
Thank you sir
Very cool!
Yes...almost cold.
We call that a "Snow Down".
Good one there feller!
Great looking video. What did you eat at the end ?
Those are Pear Salads from Thanksgiving.
You are a cool fucking dude, Shug!! I have been to the BW in summer lots but never in winter. Looks great!
Thankee feller...though I am past my Dude years! More of a Mac, Bub or Sir now....
It is so quiet and awesome up there in winter.
Well then...Carry on, Sir! ;) Thanks for the vids!
SHUG WHICH SNOW SHOES DO YOU LIKE?
