Just some explanation here. 'Noël' is the 13th piece from 'Vingt regards sur l'Enfant Jésus', composed by Messiaen in 1944. The piece depicts ringing bells - hence the surprise of Messiaen and Loriod when the bell of the church begins to ring while she plays this piece. What you see then, is Messiaen listening to the harmonics of the bell (he had an incredible ear), and Loriod playing them at the keyboard.
Well tbh he's lived a long life at this point, theres not much to be too happy about anyway. Now I dont want to be a grump or anything, but this is why lots of older people are irritable is bc of all life trauma, health, maybe loss of a loved one, much more than younger people
What a beautiful moment captured on film!! You can see the intense passion and respect for one another! There is something really special about this to me. Perhaps you could call it spiritual or something!! That look at 4:40 is very deep!!
He appears to be "not himself" near the end of his life, as she plays the music he wrote for her virtuoso capacities way back in 1944. It looks like she took good care of him as well as his music.

I’ve been pretty surprised to see people calling vingt regards “noise” or “nonmusical” blah blah. I’m not too acquainted with the classical world but even I’ve heard stuff that’s more out there than this like some of schoenbergs stuff or some Ligeti. This is really enjoyable but I do tend to love dissonance (to a certain extent) in music. E.g. I love Forlane from le tombeau de couperin, especially the bit near the end where it turns into nightmare music lol. Catalogue d’Oiseaux now THAT might be a tough listen, my ears will really need to adjust to that sound

The video's aspect ratio is wrong. It was recorded in 4x3 shape and got stretched into 16x9 dimensions and made everyone's face wider. So unfortunate...

This is not just common noise. There is a reason for every note. Messaien studied new modes, new scales, the singing of the birds in the alps, he had a profound respect for the arguments he wrote about, there is a deep meaning and a deep but difficult harmony in his writings.

What a discovery, this intimate little video. I met both of them in 1973 in Westminster Cathedral. He was an unassuming man, she a total darling.
How fortunate that you got to meet this brilliant couple!
That sounds like the beginning of a 19th century novel lol

Jamais vu Messiaen aussi sérieux. Lui qui en temps normal est si joyeux et jovial. J'imagine qu'il y a une signification derrière tout cela.

What a synchronicity - bells ringing right as the last note of the piece is played. Amazing.
Merveilleux document. Complicité absolue.
It is a great piece of music but I like even more how they saw each other and how Loriod told Messiaen "It's the good Lord responding to you".

Messiaen is very impressed that piano music and skills when Messiaen making that face
So great. Thank you! Omg the bells at the end.

Learn music, learn Messiaen
so do you
And your grandmother and your mother wore theirs around their ankles.
So haunting... but not as haunting as Messiaen's piercing stares..
More information o out this video? Is this in 1985?
Que fue lo que Yvonne le dijo a Messiaen?
Elle lui dit: "C'est le Bon Dieu qui te repond ?"
Quel église?
Notre-Dame du Liban, Paris, France. Messiaen liked to make recordings there (apart from his organ music, that is).
non, le film est tourné dans une église de province mais je ne sais pas laquelle.
