Let the fools have wars. Let the fools have all the money they want. 'The rest of us are satisfied with what we need - peace and music. God bless all these wonderful performers we see and hear on the internet from our own countries and from around the world. Amen.
Thank you Dennis for saying what I think so many of us feel. We are so lucky that such talented musicians put so much of their lives into giving us such pleasure and help us cope with the things we "Would change if we Could change" Bravo
I like that they are all standing up as they play, rather than the usual sitting down to play. It adds to this performance and I love this performance! This concerto makes me emotional: reminding me of times past and of my mom.
It’s fabulous that somebody thought to give the theorbo it’s own microphone!! Hurrah!! Now I can actually hear it, without feeling sorry for the musician for going to all the trouble to master such a difficult instrument, only for it never to be heard in orchestral settings!! And, this piece is full of ornaments that make Baroque music so satisfying to play, sing, and listen to, especially in the slow movements, with two of my favorites being the 4-3 suspension and the appoggiatura. This orchestra plays so beautifully, too!
As a young violinist in the early 70's I was enchanted by this concerto grosso the first time our school orchestra played it. I'd never heard anything so exquisite (except, perhaps, "Messiah.") It was formative for me, to be sure!
impeccable playing can't for the life me understand people giving this the thumbs down i guess they suffer VanGogh's affliction of not having an ear for music
Beautiful performance and sensitive filming. In music videos the bass is often overlooked in favour of the higher instruments but here the bass it is given full recognition alongside the other instruments with the camera frequently zooming in on it.
Archangel, ..says it all. Many years ago, as this music was playing, doves descended upon the lawn as relatives arrived for Christmas. I was briefly transcended. The perfection of conventional Western modal composition.
"Sublime" is the only word adequate to describe Corelli's achingly lovely Adagio elements - first hinted at (in this performance) between 3:55- and 5:11 ... then brought to fulfillment between 5:35- and 7:34...
This was one of my O level set pieces, back in 1987. I enjoyed it, but now I see clearly it is a masterpiece - and this performance is stunning. It helps that Master and Commander is one of my favourite films!
Everyone here is giving it everything, and it's wonderful to hear the combined focus of all of those highly engaged minds and bodies. Just breathtaking. I'm in tears.
A most wonderful interpretation. Fine recording engineering, too; close enough for fine detail and clarity,, but still capturing the hall's ambience, and the depth of the soundstage. (How seldom do the recordists get the credit they deserve.) Thank you so much for promoting it here. One tiny quibble -- for those of us who appreciate it, the bitrate makes a huge difference. Next time, maybe a real hifi bitrate for a performance so enthralling?
Wow! C'est extaordinaire. Impeccable baroque style. Lovely, yet simple ornamentation. Superb ensemble. Nice instrumentation. I love it. Best performance I've heard of this classic.
It is noteworthy how the music is matched by shots of the musicians playing certain parts. A fine job. Bella musica per questo tempo di natale. Froeliche Weihnachten.
Jacobo Gutt Both the twelve Opus 5 violin sonatas and Opus 6 concerti grossi changed the musical landscape completely; at a stroke, they made all previous music sound dated and old-fashioned. Corelli influenced all string concerto grosso writing for the rest of the Baroque period, most notably Handel’s Opus 6 which are clearly modelled on the Corelli and are really the only set of a comparable standard; Geminiani and Locatelli are two others worth checking out. The 12 violin sonatas and 12 concerti grossi are quite simply, absolute, unqualified masterpieces. PS: there is one concerto grosso (s), but many concerti grossi (pl).
What a wonderful performance Christmas music and message to those who understand great classical music presented with feeling. This classical music was passed to myself Irene by a wonderful gentleman who understand the classics exceptionally well. Thank you Frank
The Adagio is the most beautiful movement in this concerto grosso series, especially around 6:54...absolutely sublime...pure genius...thank you for sharing this.
+Alex Smith... "Sublime" is the only word adequate to describe Corelli's achingly lovely Adagio elements - first hinted at (in this performance) between 3:55- and 5:11 ... then brought to fulfillment between 5:35- and 7:34...
Lovely performance, and terrific recording and visuals. The close ups of the bowing are particularly good, especially the double bass. The ending of the Adagio-Allegro-Adagio movement (5:35-7:34 as mentioned in earlier posts) is exquisite, and the portion beginning at 6:55 is like a feather drifting slowly down through the air, and me hoping it never reaches the ground.
Thanks you Luis Macas, I'm one oh them.I listen almost exclusively Corelli and all times I'm to get affected.I tried to understand how come and on Corelli's musical scores I found something maybe. For example: the close transition between a B flat in a B simple or other sudden innovation in a almost mathematic and geometrical structure. Sorry for May English.
Used to dread this as I'm a lousy continuo player - wish I'd had such a great archlute/cittarone/ theorbo/whatever to help out. This performance is just radiant!
I am as poor as a church mouse. Not a penny to splurge on anything except phone cards, by choice. So my beaten soul can find some reverie and solitude in this awful world being ensconced by this breathtaking music.
I'm playing this with my own orchestra and I just can't get enough of it! It's beautiful. And don't call me incapable of judging bc I'm a child. I play the violin now for almost 12 years. I'm fifteen.
Wonderful. I think Corelli's music is more profound than is commonly thought. He has always ben admired for his musicianship and beautiful, graceful melodies, but I think there is real depth there too.

Well said Dennis.
I like that they are all standing up as they play, rather than the usual sitting down to play. It adds to this performance and I love this performance! This concerto makes me emotional: reminding me of times past and of my mom.
Baroque ensembles often do that. It is not certain that it was done that way at the time.
One of the most beautiful pieces ever written.
Purest perfection! From God to Corelli to the Freiburgur Barockorchester! May Heaven bless you all forever.

Haha! God to Freiburgerbarockorchester!

Magnifique et superbement interprété. Mille merci

My favourite is the vivace beginning at 7:37! Corelli has achieved a perfect blend of excitement and solemnity. 💚
Adagio just leaves me without words but with tears in my eyes
0:05 Vivace - Grace
1:39 Allegro
3:56 Adagio - Allegro - Adagio
7:37 Vivace
10:47 Pastorale
Thanks!
Merci!
Thank you, Abraham !!!

We are playing this in orchestra (minus the lute of course), and this is by far the best recordings I've found.

One reason I love classical music - all those wonderfully dressed musicians, so absorbed in wonderful music. And playing wonderfully well.
The comfort of this wonderful and captivating performance is equal to a mother's lullaby, full will nostalgia

Yes, I agree. But I'm ignorant of their methods. How do they handle all the stonework in an old church? I don't see any baffles or similar aids.
@@1earflapping Fairly tight miking, meaning pickups close to the musicians, with perhaps an ambience mike mixed down into each channel.
