  • Welcome to Read/Burn/Hoard! Where I spend a whole month on a single shelf in my library, reading titles I’ve been meaning to get to forever, saving some for later, and decluttering the rest. This month we are focusing on shelf #24!

    Really enjoyed this Niki! I’ve yet to read any Anne McCaffrey. I do want to read the original Pern books.

      Thank you! I found the writing a bit dense, but the story was good. I think it’s worth a go. :)

      Thank you! It has taken me a while (and a desperate need for space) to start being okay letting books go. But my natural inclination is to hoard!

    Its been quite a minute since I read the Freedom's Series, but I loved them. That's the only McCaffrey I've read thus far, but I do think you'll enjoy that one.

      I guess I should add that Moreta was one of my least favorites. I only read it once (I’ve read the rest multiple times) and barely remember it. 😂

    Freedom's Landing seems interesting, I'll put that in a reading challenge so it stays on my radar.

    Honestly, I think publication order is the best order for the Pern series on a first read through! (That said, I read them in an entirely random order when I was like 12 and did not care.) Anne retcons a lot of information as she goes along, and refines various bits and pieces. Unless you're already in too deep, jumping from the ones where she actually thought things through to the older stuff can be weird.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  6 месяцев назад

      That makes sense! Haha yeah my you get self read pretty randomly too, just happy to have something in front of me. I’m glad to hear I’m going the most enjoyable route with it.

    I am really tempted by the Grim Oak version of The White Dragon that is coming out soon. The new cover art is gorgeous, and I love the original cover. I love the book, but I'm not sure I only want book 3 of a trilogy.
    I like Harperhall much more than you, so maybe I'll get Grim Oak versions of them, if they make them.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  6 месяцев назад

      Haha yeah it would bug me to have just one of a set. The White Dragon has been my favorite so far. I don’t know what it is about those Grim Oak editions but I haven’t seen one yet that I actually liked. Good thing, I guess, given the price.

    I have a similar McCaffrey challenge. I've read the og Dragonflight book, enjoyed it more than i thought i would. I at least want to read the next two in the og trilogy before deciding whether to clear them out. I also have the Freedom's Landing books, haven't read em yet, they seem more straight up sci fi. No dragons! Or dinosaurs...👍

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  6 месяцев назад +1

      The no dinosaurs thing was almost a deal-breaker, but I’ll try it anyway haha. I’m glad to hear you liked the first Pern book. The third one was my favorite of that trilogy. A lot of the comments here say her originals are great (except Moreta, as the case may be), but the ones by her son aren’t very good. I may have to make some hard calls on the next round.

    Full disclosure: I voted for A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation Called Peace for the Hugo Award.
    I liked Desolation a bit more because of the additional POV characters. They give the story a little more depth.
    I'm with you about pandemic stories...when I got laid off I reread a lot of old favorites starting with The Solar Queen series by Andre Norton but the second book was Plague Ship and it was nerve-wracking to read. As things shut down I was reminded of the BBC tv series Survivors. I tried to watch but it hit way too close to what was happening. I looked for more enjoyable stuff to read...you know like Arkady Martine books 😂

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah it's comments like yours that made me want to read the book again. Normally I have a good sense on what might be popular, but this one I just can't wrap my head around it. There's something about my brain that just didn't click with the writing!
      Haha I know - it's like the last thing I want to be reading about right now and I've somehow picked up a couple lately. Timing is everything..

  • @angelamccollister
    @angelamccollister 6 месяцев назад +1

    I have that Diane Marcellas series, but haven't read it.
    I think I used to have those Laurie Marks books too.
    I've read most of Pern many times. Until she died and her son and then granddaughter took over and they are not that good. I think the last one I read was The Dolphins of Pern.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  6 месяцев назад +1

      That’s good to know, it means my choice to go by publication order is probably the best one. At the rate I’m going I’m not sure I’ll make it to Todd’s books anyway haha.

      I just found a cheap hardcover of the first book, so I’ll at least be trying that at some point. The reviews are underwhelming but I figured I’d give it a go.

    I'm late getting around to watching this one. You didn't have much on this shelf that I'm very familiar with, aside from the Pern books. I read the original trilogy of those some years ago, and they were alright, but that was enough for me. I could say I had now read some McCaffrey. I feel no need to read any more of the books.
    So you had a chance to knock out both Martine books almost back to back and you didn't take it? I'm shocked! 😛

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  5 месяцев назад +1

      Haha it is entirely possible that I’d already filmed the beginning portions of this vid and chosen a book before Memory was picked for the Hauled challenge. I call that a lucky escape! XD
      So far I wish I’d only read the initial Pern trilogy, but I guess I’ll see how the next one goes, whenever I get back to it. The comments have been unanimous in declaring the Todd McCaffrey books as not that great.

  • @lusalma5404

    For Anne McCaffrey - I did not like the ones with her son nearly as much and his alone not at all. Dragonrider's most are set in the same time period as the first three. I love Dragonsdawn the most; that and Moreta's Ride can be read at any time otherwise they somewhat need to be read in publication order. Otherwise I love Killa and the Tower and Hive series. Harper Hall trilogy is definitely more YA. The first two of the Tower and Hive are romances; the remaining are still romantic but more. The Petaybee ones, definitely look as with the Ship who sings and Killashandra some of those are in the same 'universe' but not directly related. Moreta may have had challenges for you given it's age and just how much our understanding of viral illnesses has come even from the 80s.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  6 месяцев назад

      Thank you that’s so good to know. I feel like I made some good calls then on what order I’m going to read them in and which ones I’m keeping. I’m anticipating I won’t like the ones with the son as much either.

    • @lusalma5404
      @lusalma5404 6 месяцев назад

      @@TheObsessiveBookseller Definitely; publication order is a good way to go about it. From Dragonsdawn her books were a yearly x-mas gift in hardcover for me. If you enjoyed White Dragon, I think you will continue to enjoy the series.
