I'll definitely have to check out Chorus of Dragons. Highlights for me this year: - The Navigator's Children (Last King of Osten Ard #4) by Tad Williams - The Trials of Empire (Empire of the Wolf #3) by Richard Swan - The Phoenix Keeper by S.A MacLean - The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan #1) by Robert J Bennett - Warlords of Wyrdwood (Forsaken #2) by RJ Barker - Born of Light and Shadow (Legend of Adani #1) by Ryan Kirk

I'm so glad you like The Ruin of Kings! I read it earlier this month and absolutely loved it. I'm not usually a footnotes person but I definitely enjoyed them in this one. I immediately ordered the second book after finishing it. It's definitely one of my best reads of 2024. Also, great video! Subscribed 😁 Cheers and happy holidays!

I have read exactly zero of these books, but several are part of series I want to read once I've knocked out a few others. I had a weird reading year where I burned out hard and read almost nothing all spring/summer, then really ramped up in the fall. My current #1 (unlikely to change at this date) was Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy. I hope to hit more of the chunky books I've been avoiding in 2025.

The title alone of your top book has me intrigued… I’m adding to my “explore soon” list! That is a weird reading year. I feel like I go through something similar every couple of years. It’s a good feeling though when you start to enjoy it again. Im hoping early on to get a lot of final book (just read it already) chonkers done next - just one after the other! Then read some nice small books haha.

Awesome video Niki! I’m glad you enjoyed Mercy of Gods so much. A lot of people don’t. I’ve been curious to check out Jenn Lyons, and you’ve convinced me to add her to my list.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller 5 дней назад

I’m surprised not as many people loved Mercy, but I was reading it from an appreciation at Abraham’s usual slow burn, it’ll go somewhere amazing, just be patient mentality. The Lyons book was so cool, I can’t wait to see how the series goes.

I’ve had a ton of long content lately, so I appreciate your time. I went into the Klune book hoping for a feel/good experience, so that might be why when it started getting stressful, I started not liking it.

yassssss Veiled Throne was great! I also liked it more than Wall of Storms (it's a bit befuddling to me why that one gets all the hype -- I think the last 2 books are easily the most compelling parts of the series). Howling Dark let's gooooooooooo Mercy of Gods LET"S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO def on my top list for this year too. Can't wait to get to Cage of Souls and that Jenn Lyons series. Also a a fan of 16 Ways which was my first Parker book, and need to get to his other books for sure! Awesome top list 💪

Thank you!! Yay! And someone else who actually liked Mercy of Gods too!! I’m glad I got to that one before all the bad reviews started coming out. I think you’ll have a great time with Cage of Souls! I’m hoping to treat Veiled and Speaking as one long book that’ll slam dunk the series for me. I can’t get to it fast enough!

I sell a lot of books on pango and I invested in padded envelopes of two sizes, one small for paperbacks and a larger one that fits 1-2 hardcovers. If I ship two... well, the hardcovers tend to be wrapped. Seriously, you can just wrap them in paper towels and it'll help protect them especially in a padded envelope. Though I think my new favorite thing is shelf liner; though ordering actual bubblewrap is probably cheaper :) I am on the last book of Temeraire.

You're the only reviewer I've seen so far to give Mercy of the Gods a good review, most seem to think it's a big disappointment compared the Expanse series. I know what you mean about the nostalgia factor kicking in. I was more than a bit pissed when Disney declared all the Star Wars EU books non canon and then proceeded to cherry pick bits and pieces from some of them to bastardise badly. Would it really have been that hard to not make Luke & Han such complete loser deadbeats in the Disney trilogy of films, and Leia didn't exactly come out well either and that's even before I get started on the mostly abysmal TV series. I mean how do you fuck up Obi Wan & Darth Vader that badly. I'm going to go lie down in a darkened room until my blood pressure goes down now 😉. Another great video btw and Merry Christmas to you and your family and have a great holiday season, 👍❤️

Thank you - merry Christmas to you and yours also! I’m happy that I read Mercy of the Gods before having a chance to see any negative reviews because I’m sure they would’ve influenced me somehow. I know from Abraham’s fantasy writing that the first book is usually a base for amazingness that’s to come. And in this case I genuinely loved the base. I am really disappointed in the direction Disney took with SW, so I can only hope (pun) the books will fill in what Disney missed. I agree - it shouldn’t have been that difficult to make it better.

@@TheObsessiveBooksellerregarding Mercy of God's reviews, a lot of the time you have to have a pretty good idea of what kind of tastes a reviewer has to get a good idea of what they say they like and dislike would be considered fair from your own point of view. I like seeing a few reviews of books I've loved, hated, and everything inbetween to have any idea. Sometimes you see a review and you're left wondering did we even read the same book? That's why when I find reviewers I really like and value their opinions I stick with them and take their recommendations seriously. People like yourself, Bookpilled, VintageSF, Science Fiction Reads, Cafe au Livre plus a few others across multiple genres are all reviewers I trust. You're definitely in my top 3 not just for your reviewing style but also I love your curating and collection sorting videos. You can't fake sincerity when it comes to the love of books and the pleasure of collecting them. I think Disney thought they had a licence to print money when they bought lucasfilm and they didn't have to bother too much with coherent ideas and the right people in place to shape what to do with both Star Wars and Indiana Jones, Willow etc. They could have easily made films that pleased old fans as well as bringing in new generations of fans without ever needing to retread old ground. There's good and bad stuff in the EU books but there's a lot they could have translated to a wider audience while making it fresh and exciting too. Such a shame, hopefully other franchises are taking notes on how not to do it 😉

I'm waiting until I have a few months with nothing to do before I read Stormlight Archive. Haha. Good luck getting around to Speaking Bones. There is so much detail, it is definitely worth making the time to get to it before you start forgetting too much about the previous books.

Haha it’s not looking too good! I want you to read it so much that I considered starting a weekly Stormlight book club and reading from the beginning with you. But I think going that slow would wreck some of the more amazing momentum moments. Also thank you, I’m eager to get to it. I’m only 20% through Wind and Truth after two weeks, so I’m thinking by March haha.

Just finished Kingdoms of Death. I agree with your assessment, it was just a bit too much of the "thing". I like to take a break between Suneater books, they're all a little intense.

Glad you liked The Mercy of Gods. Response has been mixed. Zahn/Thrawn: I read them when they were new and did not like them. I enjoyed a couple of comic series that came out at the time; Tales of the Jedi and Dark Empire. Service Model DNF. The Martian: The film did not use the best line in the book- My a$$hole is doing as much to keep me alive as my brain.

Per Service Model - did you make it far enough to the scene where they were clarifying literal vs figurative speech? That’s the turning point for me, but ultimately I wouldn’t recommend going back to it if you’d already thrown in the towel. Just curious!

I'm really impressed with your restraint on the audible sale. I had about 60 I was considering, and I talked myself down to 9. Most of those were books in series that I knew I would buy eventually anyway, so this saved me a credit. (3 were Mercy Thompson books, because I love the audio so much I rarely ever read them with my eyeballs.) I have so much Wind and Truth FOMO right now. Nevermind that it's my own damn fault I've only read half of Way of Kings so far.... 😂

So bad that I'm considering going completely cold turkey and cutting it out completely. Nice!! It’s great to treat yourself to some books this season. I always do better with sugar when I go the cold turkey route. If I do just a little here and there I end up in the withdrawal phase much longer than necessary. I’d rather suffer for a week and then feel better from then on. It helped to have alternative “treats” on hand to get through the cravings. I make a sugarless “muffin pie” with oats and then a blueberry yogurt cereal. Dopamine Nation is on my list - I’ll bump it up the priority a bit!

@TheObsessiveBookseller I've always struggled with sugar since my teens as I would emotionally eat for anxiety and it's stayed my Achilles heel. I'll probably go cold turkey once Christmas is out of the way and stick with it for at least a few months. I've done pretty well the past couple of months resisting the temptation to keep buying books apart from non-fiction I haven't bought a novel and have worked on reading some of my existing unreads. I managed to get through the audible sales recently with no new purchases either, mostly by ignoring all the emails notices and not going browsing. It's certainly reduced my unread pile a wee bit.

One of the reasons I've not started reading Sanderson is all the books look like solid squirrel killers. At some point I might try. I've got an insane TBR for December/January. I've got one of my plans for 2025 in place, which is reading a book from each year I've been alive. So, from 1971 to 2025. I've got four series I need to finish - 3 SF+F ones and 1 Lit Fic. Other than that I'm still sorting my reading plans out.

Squirrel killers!!! Hahaha That’s such a cool project! I’ll look forward to seeing what book gets picked for each year. It’s so hard to work in these books. You basically have to resign yourself to letting everything else go during that time, which does not help motivation or goal setting. Eventually though, it’ll be worth the “sacrifice.”
