      Ceasing consumption is not the answer. You'd eventually hurt these poor farmers. Sustainability doesn't mean damaging practices cease from being carried out. It just mean that mitigating measures are put in place to limit the damage. Of course, it doesn't work because there's no incentive to be sustainable for the corporations as they have to spend more money and this additional cost chipped away their profit margin. The entire supply chain need to be revamped.

      Yes, palm oil is in so many products. Just as GMO corn syrup is also in so many products. BUT , we can collectively STOP buying it ! I no longer buy anything with corn syrup in it. Nor anything with commercial corn in it. Such as corn flakes cereal. We have to watch because corn syrup is not the only sweetener that is made from GMO corn ! Soy beans are also GMO so I no longer buy any vegetable oil. Even Canola oil is now GMO. Olive oil is still clean. Much wheat is also now GMO ! Yup , no more Wheaties ! And no more bread. I am too fat anyway . If I can get some certified non-GMO wheat seed I can always grow my own patch of wheat and grind my own flour. Which by including the whole wheat berry is much healthier for me anyway.
      Haven't you ever wondered why the settlers of the 1800's were so strong ?
      They consumed the whole wheat berry. It is the modern corporations that has learned how to separate the wheat berry into other products , which give us less nourishment.

    Boycotting Palm oil in consumer goods is not enough. Consumers must reach out to companies through social media, websites, emails and let them know why you will no longer support their product and why so called sustainable palm oil is not a good alternative either. It’s vital companies hear from consumers.

    The problem is not the palm oil itself. It's the greed of those corporations and the greed of the farmers themselves too. And the government also turning a blind eye over what's happening. But still the one with the bigger role to play is the government. If those companies did what they're doing in Europe or America, they'd already be insolvent right now paying all the fines.

  • @seed7542
    @seed7542 5 лет назад +1

    Journeyman, You Did *VERY WELL* job, half of it it's true, but in my experience, there is some other variable that causes these farmer problems. When we said that they barely made it daily because low wage/low paid it's doesn't just that simple, there is some variable like they spend money on cigarettes/tuak (coconut fermentation drink). Safety equipment it's not something that they can't afford to buy requirement safety but they just don't want to make it more complicated, they aren't comfortable using this equipment (I talk about farmer outside the Company employee) so they end ed up not using proper equipment. RSPO certified? Hell No, this is far from what you Europeans expect. *In palm oil farm except for big company like Wilmar etc, I can guarantee you that even the PRIVATE OWNER FARM still never heard about RSPO certification.* In 22:51 "I don't know anything, I just want to sell", this is 100% true. I'm not saying this is right but they don't have the education and the profit are not that much so they could spend on high quality or certification rules.
    Otherwise Journeyman thanks so much for this documentation, gives me different side point of view now.

    • @noway4517
      @noway4517 6 лет назад +12

      Well if you never eat any sweets or bread or use cosmetics, then I guess it can be avoided. But I think the point was it is difficult because you have to look on every product if it has palm oil in it. And some people have to go eat something in their lunch break because they can't cook at their place of work. You can take food from home that is already prepared, but you will be called weird by your colleagues and if you also have kids, it will be difficult to get enough time to also cook for your lunch break, so it is not easy at all.

    • @nikkid4890
      @nikkid4890 6 лет назад +8

      no way That's exactly my point. Not that I don't know how to avoid it, but rather that it is shocking just how much palm oil is used in almost everything! There is almost nothing that it isn't hidden in.
      I even have to be careful of certain brands of peanut butter. I can't touch margerine and have to use 100% pure butter (which I love anyway 🌹)
      So many soaps contain it too. As you say, it could be in virtually all cosmetics. It truly is difficult to avoid it unless I check the ingredients of absolutely everything!
      It's tricky at a birthday or whenever invited out to eat. I stay in hotels for business too. But I just accept it as a way of life now. It worries me more that this industry is decimating wild life, and the only reason why I know the scale and manitude is because I know where they use it.
      Worse, sometimes in food, they label it as hydrolised vegetable oil! The destruction of natural vegetation and habits is on scale that boggles the mind, for an insatiable market.
      Thanks for sharing your understanding of the practicalities faced that such an allergy requires.

    • @Jafmanz
      @Jafmanz 6 лет назад +3

      @noway4517 6 лет назад +2

      You know nothing about my life, I was just stating that it is a choice you have to make and that is is difficult to do because we are used to using convenient fast methods of getting food and there is a pressure from the rest of society. I do cook most of my food myself and I don't mind bringing it with me somewhere else, but I don't think it is easy to make the transition so I understand why someone would find it difficult.

Your story loses its value when you casually and recklessly expose poor, vulnerable people to the threats of powerful corporations and politicians. Someone could easily go 'get' them. The least you can do is cover their faces and identifiable features and clothes. I thought 'protection of your sources' was part of professional journalism. Please do not add to their woes. This is tragic to watch, especially because one must realize when seeing this that no matter where one lives, this will affect a neighborhood nearby sooner than one might think. Given that the local governments are not providing any sort of legal or other redress to the landowners; that the gov'ts are subsidizing the price of palm oil, and that several international companies are profiting handsomely from this ongoing process, one might well wonder when we will start to see an exodus of economic refugees from this area of the world joining the current flood. At a yield of over 10K lbs/acre, and a lifespan of 25 years, the profit potential that drives this process is not going to subside in the near future.

    this video such as black campaign for Palm oil..FYI there's a trade war between Palm oil and any other vegetable oil such as sunflower oil ,soybean oil etc.. if we compare Palm oil with any other vegetable oil in terms of the needs of land, Palm oil is most effective, most efficient plant to produce vegetable oil for the world,because it can produce 4 ton/ha, meanwhile the sunflower oil just produce 0,6 ton/ha and soybean oil 0,4 ton/ha.. so why we don't talk about 122 million hectare deforestation of massive effect by soybean oil, we even fuss Palm oil with just 16 million hectare, if we truly adheres to the principle of trade fairness, we won't do this to Indonesia.

    Developed countries will always have something negative to report especially when it comes to agro products that can only be produced in the developing world and not in their own countries. First it was natural rubber, then palm oil, followed by cocoa and coffee, and shrimp, talapia....what's next? Cashews? Avacodos? Salmon? These developing countries are trying to improve the living conditions for their people. Give them a chance to catch up.

    Palm oil itself is not the problem, it's the unsustainable practices these people are using that's the problem. If the industry used more sustainable practices, it may increase the price $1 per bottle, but it would be worth it.

    Why are people so ignorant to the fact trees provide our oxygen and clear the air of our pollution. We pollute more and have destroyed more forest than ever. The scale of balance was tipped to pollution winning over 30 years ago. Yet we continue to cut down, burn, and destroy the remaining forest. The last two years we've seen a record number of forest and wild fires across the globe. All of the pollution these tree, some ancient, clean out of the air and stored is released back into the air when it burns. Add to that all of the added pollution from more and more civilized, modern countries with huge populations and you have more pollution than ever. Palm trees don't store pollution or produce as much oxygen as other trees. Because palm fronds are cut and are burned or decompose all the carbon pollution scrubbed from the air is released again. With large trees the carbon is stored in the wood. Only when this wood is burned or decomposes is the carbon it collected released. Therefore it is in our best interest to plant more trees, do even better at preventing man created forest and wildfires, and set aside more land for forest preservation and replanting to safe guard from future deforestation. One tree can only produce enough oxygen for two people. A mature tree can only store a maximum of 48 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. That's a 100" evergreen conifer like a pine, or cedar. In America the average carbon dioxide per person emited each year is 21.8 tons. This means for every American they need 902 100" evergreen conifers. That's just America. This doesn't take into consideration all of the desert countries with no forests. Or the countries where forest's are being burned to make way for other crops. Or the developing countries with no emissions stands on their vehicles or industrial emisions. Trees also shade the ground from the hot sun. Meaning the moisture level and temperature in a forest is regulated. With the trees gone more and more moisture is evaporating killing other plants and animals due to loss of habitat and food supply. Rivers dry up. Ground water dries up. The soil begins to lose all organic matter, turning it into dust and sand. Rain comes but the ground can't absorb it. This leads to flooding and landslides. Both of which strip more nutrients and trees from the land. We are on a collision course. The train to disaster has already left the station. We can only slow it down by taking counter measures by replanting vast forests, stopping all intentional burning of forests to make way for crops, burning of crop harvest waste, burning of coal (one of the worst fuels), finding artificial means to remove carbon gases from the atmosphere, building greener, and reversing our dependency of fossil fuels. New pollution records were recorded across the globe this year. Some records exceeded records set last year.
    Mandating LED lighting in cities which rely partially or solely on coal power plants would be a start. Yes jobs will be lost. However, bringing in a new industry or factory via tax incentives, retraining programs, and early retirement programs would ease the transition. Mandating solar (built in a green factory) be installed on every new home built. Initially home will have big ugly solar panels. But soon customers will demand builders use solar tiles. Solar tiles will become cheaper as more and more manufacturers join in, and the manufacturing process becomes cheaper, faster, and better. Car are charged up with solar power. Solar technology has improved a lot, will continue to improve and capture more energy with smaller and smaller panels. Pollution from manufacturing will need to be captured even more than is currently regulated. We've found a way to capture carbon from the air, we just haven't developed a disposal program everyone can agree on or feels safe with. However, as always, mankind will find a solution. This solution must be viable and rolled out globally before it is too late.
    We can all do our part now by further reducing our carbon footprint. Plant trees, use LEDs (these also help reduce heat and pollution. Heat that is actually have an effect on rising temperatures. Other effects are the energy needed to power air conditioning to reduce the temperature inside to combat the heat from incandescent bulbs and the energy needed to for the bulbs to operate.), buy a more efficient vehicles, buy into your power companies green power source (our power company has a small portfolio of green energy suppliers. We pay a little extra to symbolically receive this green energy. The extra we pay goes towards building more green energy sources in the region. The goal is to close the coal power plant. Currently the coal power plant provides the majority of our electricity. Which seems insane. But with the constant new housing being built year round to meet the demand, renewable energy supply can't keep up with the new demand. We've even run into issues with our water pressure due to the added housing. Just last night I couldn't get my sprinkler to move side to side because there wasn't enough water pressure at 21:00. I live North of Seattle.
    Yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada. I could go on for hours. Just please do what you can and encourage others to do the same. The more our young learn ways to reduce their carbon footprint in school, the more they will shame their parents into changing. When I was a kid it was all about recycling. We shamed our parents to the point of change. Now recycling is a habit. We do it automatically without thinking. Except for public recycling bin. People are still not paying attention to what bin they use because their face is buried in their phones.
    Ok. Ok. Enough from me.
    Cheers from Seattle.

You stop palm oil they just change the crops to soy, peanut, corn or any oil producing crops but that's mean bigger land were needed.
