Maybe it was before but it seems to be a fan favorite now, it’s critical standing has grown a lot over the years. Even at the time it seemed to be more warmly received than Monster. Monster only sold a lot more based on the good will towards Automatic. I don’t think Monster would’ve sold as well as it did if people knew what the entire album sounded like.
@@arielle7934 Allmusic for one. The general public, as well. New Adventures is far more consistent and musically interesting than Out of Time for instance. It's the last truly great R.E.M. album.
I visited my dad in another country where he lives, after many years of not seeing him, he fucked me over and on the way back in the airport I heard this song and just started crying my eyes out. Hit so deep and it always reminds me of that moment. Sky's the limit and let go of baggage.
This classic song brings back memories of late winter and early spring of 1997. Say, did anyone else here remember seeing Comet Hale Bopp, or on March 26 of that year when news got out that Bre X Mining was all a scam?
To me this song is mesmerizing. I put it on loop and it got me through my divorce in 1997 sitting in my garage smoking Salem Lights 100s by moonlight while my two dogs romped the yard. Hey, we all have stories to tell, right? Just like in third grade "What this song means to me . . . " Anyone else got a story?
@@kw2274 You've got that right! Much of the REM I heard - especially "Everybody Hurts" - was during a particularly bad part of my life. To this day I have to be in the 'right mood' to hear that song without tearing up. But as stupid as it sounds, it felt almost like Michael Stipes was in a way talking to me through that song. Telling me to hang on and things would get better and all that.
I had this song on standby at a very uncertain time in my life. Just finished college, working 3 jobs, watching close friends move away and not knowing what the future would hold for me.
Your eyes are burning holes through me. I'm gasoline. I'm burnin' clean. Twentieth century go and sleep. You're Pleistocene. That is obscene. That is obscene. You are the star tonight. So the deal was, back in the day, I went to the listening kiosk to preview the newest (at that time) Stone Temple Pilots CD. Wasn't available, but New Adventures was. So I thought, oh yeah, I remember these guys from my college days. So I listened. Totally unexpected by me, I was totally blown away.

Cant believe Stipe didnt want this one on the album at first. It's beautiful.
Perhaps their most underrated album.

@@kw2274 REM-speak. Good one. Thank God for the universal language of music.

Good memories of listening to this song in the car with my aunt on our road trips back in 2002. Time can really fly by.

I remember when the album came out and this particular song was played on the radio quite a bit.
Their best album. No doubt.
Automatic For The People
Agreed. This album and "Up" are their best.
