Not many people my age know who Leonard Cohen is. I’m in my late 20’s. I grew up with him because my mother is from Montreal and interesting fact my great grandmother was friends with his mother Masha. I am several medically complex spending most of my time in the hospital. I don’t care how many times I listen, Leonard always lifts me up more than any treatment can. When I go, I’ve asked more than anything to be buried in mt. Royal ( where Leonard is). He just has had such a deep impact on my life more than anyone I can think of. I cried for several hours upon hearing of Cohen's passing.... my parents actually held off informing me until my son was not close by as I presume they had an ongoing I would loose it.....
The unfortunately number one singalong song for Belfast ppl at Leonard Cohen concerts. I tell no lies. I was there. I wanted to cry as I couldn't hear Leonard any longer. And the punching the air was the feckin icing on the whole feckin sad cake I should've swallowed whole.
Just that a song about terrorism or (to quote Cohen) the mentality behind terrorism, released in 1987, and with Manhattan in its title, feels uncomfortably prophetic of 9/11. Doesn't it?
Been thinking about this song since it came out. Now I see the blackest of humor in it. I don't mean it's a funny song, but there's a sardonic element in it. LC occasionally wanted to baffle his fans. In another vein, one might as well wonder about the Dress Rehearsal Rag.
@@herrfister1477 Mr. Cohen was and still is the man behind the way I feel about love, loss and the entire scope of a lifetime of music that I have come to cherish.

My heart is always under its own weather… Despite the shining sun, the trees in gold This sad November day has just grown sadder First you took Manhattan, then you took the world Your songs were wrought by love, and pain, and caring, Your spirit’s journey was complex and bold. Your faith with you I was so proud of sharing First you took Manhattan, then you took the world Hashem decides the way our lives are meted. Just eighty-two - these days it’s not that old - You went in peace, your earthly tasks completed First you took Manhattan, then you took the world Of my homage to you I am the proudest. Your deep, dark voice spoke to my troubled soul - Of all those singing now, it spoke the loudest First you took Manhattan, then you took the world Though over men like you death has no power For you will live till all our hearts run cold, My mind is bleeding verse in this dark hour First you took Manhattan, then you took the world May your eternal soul ascend to heaven And sing your solemn songs straight to our Lord. The wealth you earned, the only kind worth having - First you took Manhattan, then you took the world In loving memory of Leonard (Eliezer ben Nathan) Cohen November 11, 2016
Your words, straight from your heart, is undoubtedly the finest tribute to Leonard Cohen o.b.m. I've seen to date. Thank you for expressing so eloquently what is in my heart. I only recently heard his songs and have become a devoted fan. My loss for not having heard him decades ago. Dear Doris, thank you so much for your kind words! I posted my poem all these months ago craving to reach out to those who shared my sentiments and hoping for a response. Can’t think how or why this happened, but the notification of your reply has been sitting in my Inbox all this time…unseen. I am so sorry! Like you, I only discovered him fairly recently, having grown up in another culture. His songs speak to my soul rather than my brain, and have inspired several of my own poems. My sense of loss was so keen that this poem just demanded to be written. It’s heartwarming to know that my feelings are shared by myriads of people the world over. Best wishes, Ita-Rochel
Yeh... this song touches something very deep in me. For me it is about power and revenge for all the hurt that was done to innocent people. But his voice... so magnificent! Thanks so much that you were created, Leonard!
That was the genius of the man to keep all the world guessing about the true meaning of his lyrics and that’s what I loved about him ! Only he really knew and he took them to the grave with him . Good on yer Leonard !

one of the best poet singers, "first well take Manhattan and then Berlin" Newsworthy and prophetic lyrics by Leonard Cohen
Uh-oh...
Oy vey! Sounds like Kanyes right!
Oh prophetic? Yeah maybe for the coming of your anti-christ. But that kind of leads to the eternal oven
“Ah, you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win” is this original from cohen? Its so thought provoking.
Of course it's from Cohen.
@@dora1980 has some "story of the lost son (and then more beloved one)" vibes

I cried for several hours upon hearing of Cohen's passing.... my parents actually held off informing me until my son was not close by as I presume they had an ongoing I would loose it.....

@@GATYIM That's what makes it so good.
A chillingly prophetic song.
@@FirstLast-df5tk Well, don't keep us in suspense...
@@guscairns1 he might mean that prophetic means predicting the future, when all this already happened in the 19th - 20th century.
Just that a song about terrorism or (to quote Cohen) the mentality behind terrorism, released in 1987, and with Manhattan in its title, feels uncomfortably prophetic of 9/11. Doesn't it?
I think it's about taking over US in 30s and later Berlin in 45
Been thinking about this song since it came out. Now I see the blackest of humor in it. I don't mean it's a funny song, but there's a sardonic element in it. LC occasionally wanted to baffle his fans. In another vein, one might as well wonder about the Dress Rehearsal Rag.
All men will be sailors then, until the sea shall free them. With love, goodbye, Leonard.

My heart is always under its own weather…
Despite the shining sun, the trees in gold
This sad November day has just grown sadder
First you took Manhattan,
then you took the world
Your songs were wrought by love, and pain, and caring,
Your spirit’s journey was complex and bold.
Your faith with you I was so proud of sharing
First you took Manhattan,
then you took the world
Hashem decides the way our lives are meted.
Just eighty-two - these days it’s not that old -
You went in peace, your earthly tasks completed
First you took Manhattan,
then you took the world
Of my homage to you I am the proudest.
Your deep, dark voice spoke to my troubled soul -
Of all those singing now, it spoke the loudest
First you took Manhattan,
then you took the world
Though over men like you death has no power
For you will live till all our hearts run cold,
My mind is bleeding verse in this dark hour
First you took Manhattan,
then you took the world
May your eternal soul ascend to heaven
And sing your solemn songs straight to our Lord.
The wealth you earned, the only kind worth having -
First you took Manhattan,
then you took the world
In loving memory

Your words, straight from your heart, is undoubtedly the finest tribute to Leonard Cohen o.b.m. I've seen to date. Thank you for expressing so eloquently what is in my heart. I only recently heard his songs and have become a devoted fan. My loss for not having heard him decades ago. His lyrics touch my soul in an indescribably way; he was pure genius of the highest caliber. May he RIP in The World of Truth.
Like you,
I only discovered him fairly recently, having grown up in another culture. His songs speak to my soul rather than my brain, and have inspired several of my own poems. My sense of loss was so keen that this poem just demanded to be written. It’s heartwarming to know that my feelings are shared by myriads of people the world over.
Best wishes, Ita-Rochel
