Oh dude, good for you, seriously man. I remember first being exposed to Leonard Cohen music, it was amazing. If you use Spotify, I highly recommend you check out the albums "Songs of Leonard Cohen" (his debut album) and "I'm Your Man." Hope you like them man. The beauty of living in the modern age of instant information at your finger tips is the amount of music from yesteryear you can listen to within seconds.
I think the key to reading the song is there and the following line "I never knew I had permission to murder and to maim". The song may rely heavily on religious imagery, but I find it much more humanist.
@@anner.413 I take it more as linked to the previous line, condemning those who permit attrocity. While the rest of the song goes straight to the god who permits evil, these two lines go to the church within a capitalist realist world.
@@anner.413 What you are describing isn't freedom, freedom has no consequences. If you get punished for murder and maiming, you had no permission in the first place. Leonard struggled with his treatment of woman. His adultery. His not wanting to commit to the one. "I didnt know I had permission to murder and to maim" is sad really. Black. No Leonard saw it with both eyes, something many including you (Anne) will never see. He had permission to murder and to maim, truly without consequence. His self doubt was for nothing.
@Wasp Factory I’m not sure it was this huge classist jab, more his own confession. The man was raised in a very jewish middle class home in canada during the Holocaust. Kind of puts your problems in perspective growing in the shadow of that
@@christywright3430 @Christy Wright Bro, Cohen was Jewish but he didn't believe that one bit. The candles likely represent the souls of the million who died in Auschwitz, which was controversially never bombed.
This is where we are in 2024. Living in the darkness that a majority of our fellow Americans want to live in. I'm an old woman and won't live much longer. Like, Leonard, I am ready, my Lord. I only regret that I couldn't have left a better world not only for my children and grandchildren but for humanity and life itself. Leonard's song about Love Itself, could be rewritten as Life Itself, as it will soon be gone from this earth, the garden destroyed by greed and ignorance.
I saw a nephew of mine and his wife recently. They asked what I'd been up to. I said, "Have you heard Leonard Cohen's last album?" His wife said, "I like Cohen." I said, " With terminal cancer, at the age of 83, I think he's made the greatest album of his life." My brother-in-law said, "Sounds like fun." But my nephew and his wife nodded in solemn accordance.
It's true. I told my young nephew and his new wife the same thing. Both fans but neither had heard of this album. The greatest final album by any modern artist. A masterpiece. His son deserves a lot of credit. The Stones should've ended it with Lonesome and Blue. Not that that's relevant.
he basically sings how dark humanity is - we kill the flame (with permission to murder and to maim). He's ready because of this: a million candles burning for a love that never came... He's ready (for eternal darkness - the flames burn for no one in the end). It's also more than just Hineni, it's hineni twice. This seems to refer to the bible, the 2nd time it is mentioned is when Abraham presents his son to god - to sacrifice him: Here I am... Perhaps I'm too cynical about it, but wanting it darker is hard to see in a lighter sense ;) "God calls Abraham by name, and Abraham’s response (Gen 22:1) is hineni: here I am. We can assume that God knows where Abraham is, and that Abraham himself knows that God does not need any help finding Abraham. So Abraham’s hineni is a response of a servant to his master, just as Abraham has already responded several times in faith earlier in Genesis: to leave his home and go where God sends him (Gen 12:1), and to trust in God’s promises (Gen 12:2-3; Gen 15, Gen 17 and Gen 18). But note that Abraham makes this first hineni response to God in chapter 22, before he knows what the Lord wants of him. Abraham’s second hineni is in response to his son Isaac, as they are on the journey towards the mountain where Isaac is to be sacrificed. Isaac addresses Abraham as “my father”, and Abraham responds “hineni, my son” (Gen 22:7). This hineni is the loving response of a father to his son’s call, even more poignant as we know that Abraham is being asked to sacrifice his beloved son, his “only son” (Gen 22:2). Abraham’s third and final hineni comes when the angel of the Lord intervenes, just as Abraham is about to kill his son. The angel calls his name twice: “Abraham, Abraham”, and Abraham responds: hineni (Gen 22:11). Abraham’s third hineni is once again the response of a servant, but from a deeper place, both emotionally and spiritually, from his first two “hineni”s. We may say that his first hineni comes out of awe, the second from love, and the third from his suffering. And therefore hineni implies not just readiness, not just service, but also surrender and taking responsibility - even being ready to change course if that’s what the Lord asks us to do.". This is the only thing that makes me doubt my cynicism here... The 2 hineni's refer to love - seemingly. At any rate, he considered himself to be a Jew and a Buddhist, an odd mix at best - making it harder to properly read into ;) He knew the end was nigh, that is sure.
I don't know much about the Hebrew language, but as far as I know Samuel said "hineni" when he slept as a child in a temple called by god? Like all songs of Cohen, they're so great/wise and make me think.
This song was pretty badass when I discovered it. Once I found out the singer was in his 80s and died a few weeks after its release, the badass levels broke the scales. What a way to go out. RIP Leonard Cohen 🙌🏾
Speehless!!! I just heard a part of this song on the "walking dead" something made me search part of the lyric & it's just a bad tune all the way around!!! Rip
I also have 2 brothers in prison for murder & I'm printing out these lyrics & mailing it to them both!!! Maybe they can find PEACE from this song......
This song is a Jewish confession before death. In Judaism, it is customary before death to hold a confession and admit transgressions about the mitzvot of do and don't do according to the word of God. It is so deep that I understand the use of the word darker. At the end of the confession he says the word "Here I am" in Hebrew which means - "I am ready" or "I accept". This is a completely Jewish text with reference to the Jewish Kaddish prayer for the deads. Jesus was also Jewish, therefore the crucified in a human frame, describes the human soul that wants to live imprisoned inside a human body and wants to be freed.
"They're lining up the prisoners, and the guards are taking aim; I've struggled with some demons, they were middle class and tame. I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim." That has got to be the most raw verse I have ever heard in my entire life.
*That entire album is totally haunting and heartbreaking... We can hear the last steps of an old man, considering the wounds and the ephemeral joys of his past. After a long journey into the darkness, penetrated by some lightning, Leonard Cohen is now ready to close the book of his life for good : he did what he had to do. Thank you so much, dear Leonard, for all the beauty and the emotions that you gave to your listeners during all these years. It is priceless. Your flame will survive to your body, at the time to leave. The sacred fire of your soul cannot be killed. It is living inside us and we won't let it go.*
This last album is his goodbye. Leonard Cohen will be with us always and I take great solace in that, though right now I'm just sad. My tears flow and I'm grateful you were here Mr. Cohen. And that you cared so much you took the time to say goodbye to us all.
No higher service, just in a deep sleep until he can share his music with humans once again under better earthly conditions and with perfect health. (Isaiah 26:19)
Life is imitating a journey in the countryside. We're all here to enjoy the view, some of us are kind enough to plant a tree or two for others to enjoy while paving on the same road. Leonard was one of the exceptions. He planted a whole forest for us. I'm grateful...
Hate to say it, but prepare to confront with the idea that almost everything we seem to perceive as "real" in this world is a "sham" as well. Except (maybe) for hope, love and belief. Pick your medicine...
Costantinos Sga........how disappointing, you comment (profoundly) on Cohen's work then in the same breath, dwell on negativity. What's wrong with hope, love and belief?
They called his music “Songs to slit your wrists to!” but the fascinating Leonard Cohen, was my favourite poet, singer-song-writer and personality. I never liked poetry, but Leonard Cohen's poems were an exception. I was never a music lover but his songs were an exception. His words reflected his turbulent life. He could be so soulful thoughtful, even dark and depressive but with a unique and striking sense of humour. I never met him but I just loved the man.
Barbara MacArthur.........whereas I have always loved poetry and music and indeed Leonard Cohen. As a girl, I was ridiculed for listening to the "depressing" Cohen, I'm so glad I've never listened to "knockers", I adore everything LC has ever done. And yes, I think many folk miss the fact that Leonard's sense of humour was exquisite.
“Songs to slit your wrists to" doesn't mean it in the literal sense but it means his music makes you look deep inward down to the dark places of our minds that we don't like to go.
Jrock420blam ......oh, I assure you it was meant in the strictest sense, at least in my experience. In my youth, I only knew *one* other person who enjoyed Cohen’s material, *everyone* else (without exception) mocked me regards my “awful, depressing, suicidal music”. Now all these years later, Leonard is gone and everyone *loves* the man, people are fickle.
I just heard this song for the first time in my life yesterday and I’m glad I found it. This is a masterpiece. I admire the courage & vulnerability Leonard showed here. He knew the end was near & he faced it with strength, bravery and unflinching acceptance. May he rest in peace & his legacy live on🙏🏾
The Poet is fearless, facing the death and his creator. Undaunted, to the last breath - calling for truth. The way a true hero goes. So is it written, so should it be.
Yes,...calling for the truth while accepting his fate. Calling out what appears to be God's hypocrisy? I'm right there with him. "If YOU are the Dealer........I want Out of the Game."
Gloria Mary Haywood YES! Yet I think it's entirely possible that Cohen may been referring specifically to an "institutional god", rather than a personal one.
@@bethhenderson6087 Yes. Agree. I believe that Leonard was calling out the contradictions of all man-made religions. The religious dogma doctrines they teach, and have taught, for generations,.. all while hiding behind the name of Holiness and God!!
@@jaghatai_bulut read and understand how he spent his life. He floated with different views of religion all his life, which is why he is a human being.
"I'm ready, my Lord." That is not easy to say as a mortal. That foreshadowing was very brave including the lyrics on Leaving the Table!!! This album gave me so much goosebumps.
RIP LEONARD COHEN, WHAT IRONY TO HAVE ONE OF YOUR BEST SONGS CLIMBING THE CHARTS AS YOU EXIT ....STAGE RIGHT . !!!! THANK YOU FOR A UNIVERSE OF MUSIC AND POETRY .
Absolutely agree. It's rare to find such a combination of artistry, humility, humour and humanity in a performer, and we are diminished by his passing. Thanks for the memories - as he wrote in a letter to Marianne when she was dying - 'I'll see you down the road'...
Frank, I do not think it is an irony. On the contrary it is a form of art: the art of going out YOUR way. Just a thought. God must be really angry with us this week. :-(
He did what he loved, giving and inspiring until his final days. I don't know if that's how he would've chosen to spend them, but I know it's something that I'll always remember of him.
because many people believe that if you ignore the darkness it magically dissappears. so the thought of facing the darkness is simply depressing and horrific for most.
Forget whatever adriana said. Being a fulltime drinker each weekend.ill tell you...least for me the catholic, its conscience. Goodluck escaping your catholic guilt,I know I haven't yet lmao
When Cohen's flame was extinguished the world became darker. But the spirit of his beautiful music and wisdom of his profound poetry will continue to console us as it accompanies us on our journey through the deepest darkness of the human soul and the endless universe.
If anyone wants to know what old age feels like, listen to Cohen's later work. It's poignant, sad, angry and beautiful. My late father loved his music, I'm so sorry I didn't get it at the time.
If you are the dealer, I'm out of the game If you are the healer, it means I'm broken and lame If thine is the glory then mine must be the shame You want it darker We kill the flame Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name Vilified, crucified, in the human frame A million candles burning for the help that never came You want it darker Hineni, hineni I'm ready, my lord There's a lover in the story But the story's still the same There's a lullaby for suffering And a paradox to blame But it's written in the scriptures And it's not some idle claim You want it darker We kill the flame They're lining up the prisoners And the guards are taking aim I struggled with some demons They were middle class and tame I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim You want it darker Hineni, hineni I'm ready, my lord Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name Vilified, crucified, in the human frame A million candles burning for the love that never came You want it darker We kill the flame If you are the dealer, let me out of the game If you are the healer, I'm broken and lame If thine is the glory, mine must be the shame You want it darker Hineni, hineni Hineni, hineni I'm ready, my lord Hineni Hineni, hineni Hineni..
This is one of the most intense songs I have ever heard. It is as true as it can get. Especially now the man is gone. But his work will stay in my heart, among many other hearts.
In a world where success seems to be more about "brand" ... "niche" ...and "marketing strategy," Leonard rose above it all. He wrote his soul on a piece of paper and then sang it to us. We love you Mr Cohen. May our gratitude and love always reach to the heavens where you now sing.
The depth of this song. Knowing his time was coming and he was just getting prepared as he was looking for his Jewish roots. Hinanie hinanie I am ready my lord. This mad was made of good. No one will ever the ability to duplicate his lyrics. May he rest in peace!
Day *365* of listening to this song everyday for a year. Thanks to everyone who has followed me on this long, incredible journey of listening to this fine masterpiece by Mr. Cohen. This song has touched and shaped me for who i am today and it will forever sit deeply in my heart . I will continue to cherish my love for this song and praise the legendary Leonard Cohen. Thank you and till next time.
@@lornes9853 I found this song while researching Leonard Cohen and fell in love with it. I listened to it for weeks until i challenged myself to do it everyday for a year. This song relaxes me and is an escape mechanism for me. I will always listen to it.
@@sabrinajohnson8537 I wouldn't have described the song as relaxing, but I'm glad it had a positive effect for you! By the way, I worked on this song so my relationship with it is different and personal. Another story, another time....
He's a part of the Old School, that we can never replace. Nobody can sing like him. I don't know.. Like, what the hell are we going to do know ? Leonard is gone.. And with him, a part of the music generation that, kept it going, no matter what. There were no talking about, quitting while on top. Taking a break. i actually believe, that his song, was his way of telling us that this was his last piece of art. He knew he were dying, and this was his way of telling us.. By making one hell of a good album. So many childhood memories with his music. Damn it ! R.I.P Leonard. #SoLong Hineni, Hineni I'm ready, my lord..
I woke up soon today, i did my morning meditation, i ate my breakfast, and then i open Facebook. All the positivity i have reached, disappeared when i read about leonard cohen's death. I start to cry, the tears were falling from my eyes and i can't stopped them. I told my father about this, trying to make my voice less trembling than i can. I went in my bedroom and i felt my face burning, with hot tears falling. I was full of pain, i sighed slowly, i dried my wet eyes and go to school, with all this negativity. Now i'm fine, because he left many beatiful things to us, because death is the most natural thing on this earth and because i think he did the best with his life. Thank you Leonard you changed my still short life.
He passed away at a ripe age, surrounded by loved ones, with a fantastic career and impact on many, many people's lives. It's all anyone can hope for. :)
Luca Maresci, thank you for sharing. I reacted the same way as you did and I keep watching videos of him on RUclips and reading articles on him, and it hurts so much. This beautiful, gentle, tormented soul is gone and my heart is broken.
Gisèle Thibeault I'm doing the same, for example now i'm in love with the video of "In my secret life" and with old concerts version of "Suzanne" and "Take this waltz". And i can't stay without listening to the album "New skin for the old cerimony", songs like "Field commander cohen" and "A singer must die" are so powerful to me
I literally LOVE every verse of this. It is pure poetry inspired by a man's impending doom. He knows it won't be long. This one is especially beautiful to me. "There's a lover in the story But the story's still the same There's a lullaby for suffering And a paradox to blame But it's written in the scriptures And it's not some idle claim"
He left us 7 years ago , on november 7th and we still miss him so much. I was lucky enough to hear him at the very beginning, in 1972, in a university gymnasium in Montpellier..... there were several hundred of us, sitting on the floor, and it was the beginning of a discovery that would never end. Thank you for everything you've given us, Léonard.
There is a video that shows him backstage...so overwhelmed by the applause that he was shocked and brought to tears. There's just something about that, that makes me listen to his lyrics.
There is also a documentary where Mr. Cohen tells of being so filled with emotion and stage-fright that he walked off the stage in tears. He said that he began to hear the most beautiful sound....it was his audience singing lovingly to HIM, ..encouraging him to come back out!!
Thanks to everybody who answered my question on this thread. A LEONARD COHEN STORY...to go down in history maybe..... I would love to share a very touching and funny moment in my life which included my best friend's son who hated Leonard Cohen and the fact that my best friend and i had spent years, nay decades taking ridicule from my best friend's son because of our adoration for everything that is and was Leonard Cohen. So, after years of ridicule on the subject, the following really happened. My best friend's son decided to get married. A night before the wedding, we were all around at my best friend's house when he decided to play one of Leonard's songs. Off marched my best friend's son to do what he normally did. TURN THE CD PLAYER OFF and replace Leonard with other songs as soon as his father's back was turned. A huge argument ensued and in the battle many swear words were exchanged. So, that sets up the night before the wedding. Moving forward to the day of the wedding and trust me, you couldn't make this up. I am sitting next to my best friend's brother who has decided to film the wedding(with permission) and just as he turns the camera towards my best friend's son, i happen to notice my best friend talking to his ex-wife. Quite a lovely moment captured on the camera. But what came next has to be one of the funniest things i have ever witnessed. The vicar has started to talk very quietly to the bride-to-be and the groom(my best friend's son remember..and ultimate hater of Mr Cohen and his music), when suddenly, with no warning a song starts to gently play in the background...Leonard Cohen's SECRET LIFE...my best friend picks up on the moment and turns to look at his brother and in particular, myself to see if i have heard Leonard. Damn right i had. I was doing my level best not to give away my "internal laughter of epic proportions" and slowly failing in my task..looks passed back and forth(with larger and larger smiles..and a little laughter until suddenly my best friend's brother started laughing because he had noticed my best friend's son had suddenly woken up to the idea that somehow LEONARD COHEN has found his way into the wedding. Now the laughter has spread as people in the congregation who were asking each other what the laughter was about and word was spreading about what is happening...THE WHOLE CHURCH IS NOW IN FITS OF LAUGHTER...as the slightly angry groom turned and said to the vicar.... "sorry Vicar, do you mind me asking..WHAT IN THE HELL IS THAT PLAYING FOR....WHO ARRANGED THIS SH*T"...the vicar's answer came swift and sure.."i guess that would be the great Leonard Cohen himself son...i think the man worthy of playing at anybody's wedding..or FUNERAL of course...are you ready to get married my son?" THE MARRIAGE barely lasted a year....topped sadly by Leonard's sad demise. STILL...we have the great man's creation..RIP sir...as one songwriter to another...respect to you.
he said, "I am Here", and didn't say "I'm gone".....he's still here somewhere and in our Hearts forever....the "Flame is still here"......it's Leonard.....
I came to Leonard Cohen's in my thirties.... I'm now in my sixties and have not stopped listening to his beautiful music and I will continue to listen until I can listen no more.... was also lucky enough to see Mr Cohen in concert on numerous occasions and it was an absolute joy to do so, thank you Leonard.
You sir are a legend, I’m in my early 20s. I was also taught to respect my elders (older than me to be more specific) I hope you have lived the life you want and to many more years of experiences my good sir.
The song is defying and accusatory, God did not take it well... But the lightning would not work (again!) so God tasked his administration and it took them weeks because of unwieldy paperwork and incompetence.
This is the darkest song I have ever heard. I usually listen to metal even extreme metal genres but they in their darkness only vocalise their emotions... this goes further, much further.
viva libertas ergo vivite libertatem 🙏 dude 😊 welcome to Leonard Cohen...but not all his songs are dark .. he wrote Hallelujah.. his songs are relevant.. politically and socially for the most part... but pretty much timeless.. ENJOY darlin 🤗
Their different, ya know? Lots of Metal is about different aspects of spectacle, some do it more artfully than others. IVe been lucky enough to be turned onto some really cool and thought provoking metal that’s out there. Leonard is an island unto himself, though. Really an interesting and singular case.
Me too, I mainly listen to Doom, Black, Funeral Doom or Gothic Metal. But I've never heard a song by any of such bands (or rather a whole album) about the author's incoming death. Plus, the very unique meaning of this song is the overturning of the conversion motif. We usually have faithless people who convert before dying to achieve grace. Here, a religious man, so close to death, loses his trust in the Providence and even questions his own faith.
VM: Cohen was unboundedly spiritual, but perhaps not so much dogmatically religious. He didn't need belief or dogma because he had the knowledge of having experiencing his spiritual life/existence. It sounds like your husband's perspective may be much the same as LC's.
My sister is now bravely facing her own mortality. Cancer has stepped up the game and she is in her final hours. I played Mr. Cohen's beautiful song "Anthem" for her and held my tablet up to her face so she could see the gorgeous video up-loaded for it. I have lost other family members and close friends before,...but I dunno, ....Guess I'll never get used to death and dying...........😧😧😧😧😧😧😧
Holy shit. Ok for those that dont know. Hineni in Hebrew means "here i am", and its a powerful statement. It can mean many serious things depending on who youre saying it to. A very biblical phrase. You can look it up and learn all about it. This song is FUCKING amazing. Especially.....for the present day. Leonard Cohen was a visionary. Unfortunately he didnt envision a bright future. Unfortunately, its starting to look like he was right. :/
Tim Maloney ......he surely did. I didn’t get to see him until 2010 and even in older age, the man was truly spectacular. I’ve loved Leonard for almost 50 years and his voice on this album is so rich and beautiful, aged to absolute perfection. If you’re not familiar with his work, I can’t recommend the man highly enough. We often hear of “Suzanne” and “So Long Marianne” etc. and while lovely, there are countless lesser-known gems. Should you care to explore Leonard a little, here’s a few off the top of my head.... “One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong” (an early personal favourite), “Last Year’s Man” , “Mastersong” (truly brilliant lyrics) “The Gypsy’s Wife” through to the somewhat startling “The Future” and so very much more. Leonard released many fine albums over the years (as well as books of Poetry) ending with this beauty. I love pretty much everything the man ever did.
Do not stand at my gave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow.I am the sunlight On the ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rushof quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night.Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die.My Spirit is still alive…
everyone ,everywhere , who know well about music and literature, will consider leonard (A well know writer and poet before start in music industry) for Nobel ,first than dylan,,,with the exeption of this people of Nobel prize academy ,that ignored Borges and many others before,,,,and what they get ?Dylan didn't care a shit about ,and ignored them,, well done.
+Aldo Vila True! One good thing about Dylan's prize, though, is that this is a big positive step for the academy. By considering the musicians who have been writing great poetry, they've crossed the boundaries and have broken down prejudices when it comes to literature. Sadly, LC was not the one who accepted that groundbreaking prize.
His son completed one more album he recorded the vocals to after this one. It’s called Thanks for the Dance. It’s just as good as this one. Check out the song Happens to the Heart from it
This and Hallelujah are the best songs. I love Bob Dylan, but if you're going to give a songwriter a Nobel for Literature, it should have been Cohen. R.I.P. in any case.
Indeed. Happy birthday Sir Cohen. So outstanding we still have you with us, and even more to keep receiving creations of yours. No words for that, the best of the best.
Stones Jones Hatred? My comment describes religious teachings as “a source of joy and insight”. Maybe you're a bit blinded yourself, and didn't read my comment carefully. This the song's description straight from the album's press release: «1. “You Want It Darker” Hypnotic groove. The surprise of a great synagogue choir. An unflinching exploration of the religious mind. “Didn’t know I had permission to murder and to maim.”» Mine is definitely one of the possible interpretations. I hadn't even thought of it like that until I read the press release. Moreover, my post doesn't say that religious people are all terrible. It just says that the song might criticize that specific behavior. I didn't claim that drive towards darkness manifested in every religious person. You can miscast me as a religion-hater, but that's entirely your decision. If I hated religious themes, why on Earth would I be a fan of Cohen anyway…?
Another music hero dies - God must be looking for a gorgeous band in 2016! Thanks for all your fantastic rough smooth stories in music you left back on earth, there won't be never such a voice again!
Me and my husband started to listening our wonderful poet / singer in 1985 . The same year when our son was born. And we still admire him and his poems

I think when I first heard Leonard Cohen in 1970 I wasn't ready for him. He was so different way ahead of his time for sure. He just got better and better as he aged. I found this song especially relevant to me and my family at this time.
You were a gigantic artist : your awesome, highly poetic-mystical-profound music accompanied my whole life. I wish you endless light in the dark - R.I.P. dear Leonard
I discovered Leonard Cohen over 35 years ago, went down a serious rabbit hole, bought all his albums going back to 1967, bought all his books of poetry. Like any kid, when I heard the sweet melodic sounds of Chelsea Hotel and then heard the line "giving me head on the unmade bed" I was like WHOA! This guy's a badass! Lol but his ability to put to words the human experience, humanities frailty and flaws, wants and desires, the good the bad the ugly. I think as a teen it was his "being real" that first hooked me, but as I've aged I've only gotten to appreciate him more. Leonard Cohen songs often said the quiet parts out loud. Put voice to our most vulnerable thoughts and feelings we hold quietly inside.
If you are the dealer, I'm out of the game If you are the healer, it means im broken and lame If thine is the glory, then mine must be the shame You want it darker We kill the flame Magnified, sanctified Be the holy name Vilified, crucified In the human frame A million candles burning For the help that never came You want it darker Hineni, hineni I'm ready, my Lord There's a lover in the story But the story's still the same There's a lullaby for suffering And a paradox to blame But it's written in the scriptures And it's not some idol claim You want it darker We kill the flame They're lining up to prisoners And the guards are taking aim I struggle with some demons They were middle class and tame I didn't know I had permission To murder and to maim You want it darker Hineni, hineni I'm ready, my Lord Magnified, sanctified Be the holy name Vilified, crucified In the human frame A million candles burning For the love that never came You want it darker We kill the flame If you are the dealer, let me out of the game If you are the healer, I'm broken and lame If thine is the glory, mine must be the shame You want it darker Hineni, hineni Hineni, hineni I'm ready, my Lord
"I didn't know I had permission" is such a brutal, unflinching line. As I read it, Cohen is saying 'it is clear that god will not prevent us from doing evil' - the Lord 'wants it darker' and humankind obliges, killing the flame. All the evil in the world is done with God's consent, Cohen suggests, so perhaps that evil is intended. Perhaps because there is no healing without grievous harm first? There's a paradox to blame - he still believes that this is not simply because of an evil God, but for some loving reason. It's beautiful music, and hard to listen to.
Humans have an unlimited capacity for cruelty. The saving grace in it is that we can also redeem ourselves. The candle lines are the references to that we are on our own and better get this together.
@@holgerknust580 Nope, I interpret it differently. The "Million candles burning for the help that Never came!",.. is all the millions of prayers and pleadings for God to please intervene in our suffering and yet he seems to ignore it all. Hmmm?.......
I didn't grow up in Quebec, but my family is all from here and I currently live in Montreal. The unique thing about this place, Quebec and Montreal, is that religion is part of the framework here in a way that I really can't begin to explain to people from other parts of Canada. Cohen struggled a lot, it seemed, with his relationship to the religious and the spiritual, but it is a consistent part of almost all of his work. And I think Montreal, being here, you start to understand some of why that is. There is Jewish and Christian symbology all over this city, and everything here is named after a saint of some kind,. Montreal is known as a city of churches. I feel like being here has helped me connect more with where he was coming from and what shaped his music.
This is the first time I've ever heard a Leonard Cohen song. Woah...
You've definitely heard his work before. He wrote songs like Hallelujah, So Long Marrianne, Suzanne.
You owe it to yourself to listen to his first three studio albums - they're all masterpieces
Also "Dance Me to the End of Love" is a popular one among indie performers. The Civil Wars did a good cover of it.
O oo man...get ready.
Oh dude, good for you, seriously man. I remember first being exposed to Leonard Cohen music, it was amazing. If you use Spotify, I highly recommend you check out the albums "Songs of Leonard Cohen" (his debut album) and "I'm Your Man."
Hope you like them man. The beauty of living in the modern age of instant information at your finger tips is the amount of music from yesteryear you can listen to within seconds.
"I struggled with some demons, they were middle-class and tame." never heard human tragedy being expressed more poetically.

What's crazy is it a religious reference saying a million prayers to God went unanswered.

At the age of 83, with terminal cancer, he created the greatest album of his life.
Give all the happiness you have
I saw a nephew of mine and his wife recently. They asked what I'd been up to. I said, "Have you heard Leonard Cohen's last album?" His wife said, "I like Cohen."
I said, " With terminal cancer, at the age of 83, I think he's made the greatest album of his life." My brother-in-law said, "Sounds like fun." But my nephew and his wife nodded in solemn accordance.
@@CleetoMangetell your story roald Dahl
It's true. I told my young nephew and his new wife the same thing. Both fans but neither had heard of this album. The greatest final album by any modern artist.
A masterpiece. His son deserves a lot of credit. The Stones should've ended it with Lonesome and Blue. Not that that's relevant.
The opposite of peaking in high school.
“Hineni, hineni; I’m ready, my lord.” Hineni is Hebrew for “here I am” ( Cohen was 82 when released this song ). Genius !
Danke für diese Information 😊👍
a useful comentary !
Merci pour cette information
he basically sings how dark humanity is - we kill the flame (with permission to murder and to maim).
Perhaps I'm too cynical about it, but wanting it darker is hard to see in a lighter sense ;)
"God calls Abraham by name, and Abraham’s response (Gen 22:1) is hineni: here I am.
At any rate, he considered himself to be a Jew and a Buddhist, an odd mix at best - making it harder to properly read into ;)
He knew the end was nigh, that is sure.
I don't know much about the Hebrew language, but as far as I know Samuel said "hineni" when he slept as a child in a temple called by god?
Like all songs of Cohen, they're so great/wise and make me think.
It's means ready by the full of his essence , not just I'm here
This song was pretty badass when I discovered it. Once I found out the singer was in his 80s and died a few weeks after its release, the badass levels broke the scales. What a way to go out. RIP Leonard Cohen 🙌🏾

Thank you! 🙏
"They're lining up the prisoners, and the guards are taking aim;

Home with a capital H. Hear, hear.
Life is imitating a journey in the countryside. We're all here to enjoy the view, some of us are kind enough to plant a tree or two for others to enjoy while paving on the same road. Leonard was one of the exceptions. He planted a whole forest for us. I'm grateful...
religion is a sham.
Ι totally agree with you!!!!!!!!
The lyric "Everything as a Crack; that's how the light gets in" is what has KEPT me from slitting my wrists at times!!

I dont know why leonard's music is so depressive for many people ...but to me is pure joy
I agree. Hallelujah!
because many people believe that if you ignore the darkness it magically dissappears. so the thought of facing the darkness is simply depressing and horrific for most.

"sorry Vicar, do you mind me asking..WHAT IN THE HELL IS THAT PLAYING FOR....WHO ARRANGED THIS SH*T"...the vicar's answer came swift and sure.."i guess that would be the great Leonard Cohen himself son...i think the man worthy of playing at anybody's wedding..or FUNERAL of course...are you ready to get married my son?"
THE MARRIAGE barely lasted a year....topped sadly by Leonard's sad demise.
STILL...we have the great man's creation..RIP sir...as one songwriter to another...respect to you.
I suspect Leonard is looking down and laughing...
what a great gift he gave us for his birthday!
Happy birthday to a true genius loved u since the beginning x
Incredibly brilliant thank you Leonard Cohen!

May his memory be a blessing.
he said, "I am Here", and didn't say "I'm gone".....he's still here somewhere and in our Hearts forever....the "Flame is still here"......it's Leonard.....
Nicely put...delicately put...PERFECT comment.
Leaving a body of work is a great way to live forever.
fucking cringe
Vera Scroggins he said"I'm here" to the That means he was ready for the DEATH
Thank you Mr. Cohen. You made this world a much better place. Rest in peace.

"I really love his music hallelujah when he talks about me, it was an honor, truly an honor" -David
Teenager here lol
"I'm ready my lord"

@ULTRA TENso true.
Legend. RIP
The song is defying and accusatory, God did not take it well...
But the lightning would not work (again!) so God tasked his administration and it took them weeks because of unwieldy paperwork and incompetence.
Cohen did not lead a life according to his Lord's diktat.
He had leukemia and he was literally old as shit. He 100% knew where things were going, that's why he wrote that.
This man can t never die.
double negative?
grammar nazi?
More poetic that way.
badweather crow i mean lord off the notes, can never die, man off the world like cohen can t never died
no, you are spot on, my comment was meant for kiakingofcars not you. Leonard Cohen will live on in our heads and our hearts forever.
If you reckon this is dark, try Cohen's "The future"...Unfortunately I think we are already there...
Their different, ya know? Lots of Metal is about different aspects of spectacle, some do it more artfully than others. IVe been lucky enough to be turned onto some really cool and thought provoking metal that’s out there. Leonard is an island unto himself, though. Really an interesting and singular case.
You wanted it darker ?
Me too, I mainly listen to Doom, Black, Funeral Doom or Gothic Metal. But I've never heard a song by any of such bands (or rather a whole album) about the author's incoming death. Plus, the very unique meaning of this song is the overturning of the conversion motif. We usually have faithless people who convert before dying to achieve grace. Here, a religious man, so close to death, loses his trust in the Providence and even questions his own faith.
singer, songwriter, poet, novelist, philosopher #leonardcohen the gentleman artist ❤
"I'm ready, my lord" :( Perceived his farewell and wrote it in his last disc, like Bowie. Immortal grandeur
I had that very same thought
My husband loves Cohen so much. Listening to Cohen's music is a great comfort to me especially that my husband is in the palliative care.
Then your husband must be a very spiritual man himself, as was Mr. Cohen. Hope his music continues to bring you comfort. God bless you.
VM: Cohen was unboundedly spiritual, but perhaps not so much dogmatically religious. He didn't need belief or dogma because he had the knowledge of having experiencing his spiritual life/existence. It sounds like your husband's perspective may be much the same as LC's.
Prayers for you husband❤
@Angelique Marion Maye Ummm, not to be a dick but you may want to look up "Palliative Care"
The true meaning of 'poetry in motion'.
He said I AM READY MY LORD, and really was ready to go. Rest in peace legend!
Mr.Mystic THATS WHAT HE MENT WHAT DO YOU THINK THIS IS HIS LAST SONG WHAT WOULD YOU THINK THAT HE MENT WITH:Im ready,my lord.
Cohen's flame will NEVER die, even his cigarette is burning.
I believe you.
this cat still had it going on..amazing artist..
Do not stand at my gave and weep
I am not there,
I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.I am the sunlight
On the ripened grain.

I am the swift uplifting rushof quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.Do not stand at my grave and cry.

This beautiful Poem is from Mary Elisabeth Frye
Beautiful words, brian kelly.
Why you put that "My spirit is still alive..." on the end? It's not in the original poem and it's awful.
The world is much darker without Leonard Cohen. The flame died.!
When I heard of Dylan getting the Nobel prize, I thought "Leonard is next in the line" He was such a prolific and inspiring poet! A true visionary! :(
Cohen would no doubt have graciously and humbly acknowledged the recognition, unlike Dylan
everyone ,everywhere , who know well about music and literature, will consider leonard (A well know writer and poet before start in music industry) for Nobel ,first than dylan,,,with the exeption of this people of Nobel prize academy ,that ignored Borges and many others before,,,,and what they get ?Dylan didn't care a shit about ,and ignored them,, well done.
+brenda shunn Yes! I agree. He earned our admiration by being so modest.
+Aldo Vila True! One good thing about Dylan's prize, though, is that this is a big positive step for the academy. By considering the musicians who have been writing great poetry, they've crossed the boundaries and have broken down prejudices when it comes to literature. Sadly, LC was not the one who accepted that groundbreaking prize.
leo better but politics
I've been a lifelong Leonard Cohen fan. But I'm just now hearing this album. It's like he has one more gift to give my life from beyond the grave
'"Closing time" is a brilliant one...."Tower of song " is great too
Don't fret. Awards are not there to recognize talent, they are to push political agendas.
Couldn't agree more. At the very least he was a genuine poet to begin with.
SO F-ING TRUE!!!!
Suzanne imo is his best song. My god, what a song.
These 5 minutes > wiseness that I've acquired over the last 30 Years.

This song is a blessing to those who understand. RIP Leonard Cohen.

I was so excited to see this in my notifications upon waking up. Happy birthday, Leonard Cohen!
me too!!!! first thing on my day!
Indeed. Happy birthday Sir Cohen. So outstanding we still have you with us, and even more to keep receiving creations of yours. No words for that, the best of the best.
Brilliant and sober - Cohen continues to recognise his movement, as with all of us, towards Heaven's Gate; how it must preoccupy such a deep thinker!
it always amazes me how people acquire different treasures/interpretations out of the same song. cheers.
I took this song as a criticism of religious people taking what should be a source of joy and insight and only seeing opportunity for cruelty.
hahhaha @Felix..such bias. This is filling it in with your own (hatred) point of view to the max!
Stones Jones
Hatred? My comment describes religious teachings as “a source of joy and insight”. Maybe you're a bit blinded yourself, and didn't read my comment carefully.
This the song's description straight from the album's press release:
«1. “You Want It Darker”
Hypnotic groove. The surprise of a great synagogue choir. An unflinching exploration of the religious mind.
“Didn’t know I had permission to murder and to maim.”»
Mine is definitely one of the possible interpretations.
If I hated religious themes, why on Earth would I be a fan of Cohen anyway…?
bias? I think you should read the lyrics, these aren't words of hope, they're realistic words, not really pro or anti religion just dark and funny.
He's a poet and he knows it❤
Another music hero dies - God must be looking for a gorgeous band in 2016!
Thanks for all your fantastic rough smooth stories in music you left back on earth, there won't be never such a voice again!
There went the prophets
Jazz- Soulfan Our ol' friend Grim has been working overtime in 2016

The album cover is amazing. Cohen looking out in the darkness, calm and ready for what's to come, shinning light in complete unknown.

Me and my husband started to listening our wonderful poet / singer in 1985 . The same year when our son was born. And we still admire him and his poems
Word. Is . Born
If you are the dealer
I'm out of the game
If you are the healer
I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory
Then mine must be the shame You want it darker
We kill the flame
Magnified and sanctified Be Thy Holy Name Vilified and crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning For the help that never came You want it darker
We kill the flame
Hineni Hineni
I'm ready, my Lord
There's a lover in the story
But the story's still the same There’s an lullaby for suffering And a paradox to blame
But it’s written in the scriptures And it’s not some idle claim You want it darker
We kill the flame
They’re lining up the prisoners now The guards are taking aim
I struggled with some demons
They were middle-class and tame Didn’t know I had permission
To murder and to maim You want it darker
We kill the flame
Hineni Hineni
I'm ready, my Lord
Magnified and sanctified Be Thy Holy Name Vilified and crucified

I think when I first heard Leonard Cohen in 1970 I wasn't ready for him. He was so different way ahead of his time for sure. He just got better and better as he aged. I found this song especially relevant to me and my family at this time.
You were a gigantic artist : your awesome, highly poetic-mystical-profound music accompanied my whole life.
I wish you endless light in the dark - R.I.P. dear Leonard
Tears are coming tonight for a friend recently died. May he rest in peace.
RIP, Leonard. The world misses & loves you. Thank you for your perfect words & music. Love
This song is pure genius.
Wonderful
One of Cohens most powerful songs
Guys, Hineni means "Here I am" in Hebrew. This is from the bible. Boy this song is killing me.
Sima - right.
More specifically-it is what Abraham said when called upon by God
Samuel, hearing the voice of the Lord calling his name, calling him to become the Prophet who anoints the King

Idle claim
Isnt he saying "Idle"?
July 2024 I am ready my lord the words are so powerful, may he rest in peace.
I have no words. Already one of his best, in my opinion.
This is so hypnotizing.... R.I.P. Leonard Cohen...
And that god's glory come at the cost of our shame
Humans have an unlimited capacity for cruelty. The saving grace in it is that we can also redeem ourselves. The candle lines are the references to that we are on our own and better get this together.
@@holgerknust580 Nope, I interpret it differently. The "Million candles burning for the help that Never came!",.. is all the millions of prayers and pleadings for God to please intervene in our suffering and yet he seems to ignore it all. Hmmm?.......
Isn't that exactly what I said ;)
@@holgerknust580 😌😀 Yeah, I guess you're right about that! Sorry, I was about half asleep when I replied to that!☺
I didn't grow up in Quebec, but my family is all from here and I currently live in Montreal.
