#REM
What is so awesome about REM, is that every time you havent heard one of their songs for a while, when you do hear it, you realise all over again, just how wonderful it is.
Yes!!!!! Exactly how I feel right now. It takes me to a place that’s really just pure awe like I’m hearing or watching this vid for the first time
Well said. That is exactly true.
Exactly!!!!!!!!
I completely agree! I could listen to REM for the rest of my life and never get bored because their songs are all so varied! I was born in the early 2000s but this is my kind of music.
This one was indeed a truly great pop song.
The last words on the last song on the last album with Bill Berry: "I'm outta here"! What a finish to the best song on the album by far!
REM is literally the only band where I could start with the first song on Murmer, keep on playing through all the other dozen studio albums, and start right back with Murmer again…without ever wishing a song would finish up to get to the next one, or be inclined to skip one of their “less commercial” records. EVERY ONE of their songs I consider a masterpiece of utter originality. Their body of work is simply breathtaking.
I’m with you on that 👍
Yes!
I am so grateful to my dad for playing R.E.M songs in the car when i was little. All their songs are very important to me, particularly this one.
there is always that transition into REM sleep in order to dream. sometimes we get stuck in something interesting and wake too late. like the transition into daylight getting up at 4AM playing "Daysleeper"
Love this gem too. Always seems to play in my head when am in the shower.
And now I play them to my kids in the car... Brings a smile to my face when they sing along to shining happy people, my work is done❤️
I feel the same, the moment I got Automatic for the People in hand as an audio cassette back in 1992 or 1993, I knew that this will change the way I see the world
New Adventures In Hi-Fi is a remarkable album, full of great songs that return to haunt you when you give them the chance.
I love the album!
There are maybe 3 songs in the world that give me chills every time.. Electrolite is one of them. "Stand on a cliff and look down there. Don't be scared. You are alive. You are alive." Goosebumps. Every. Single. Listen.
Electrolite is just e revamp of an older song called Nightswimming. Listen to the piano in each.
But both two great songs
Same 🙌🏻
Same here mate ..
What are the other 2 songs?
Nothing like R.E.M. Nothing will be like them. Yet their honesty and humility in their music is something you wish every band had, even the ones you like as much as them. I see them as role models above all else.
You are right.
Spot on.
Agree - the fact they hate Trump backs up this theory
@@MrYossarianuk No, that just makes them another lockstep liberal entertainer.
@@bobwolenski5720 how many right wing artists do you listen too ?
When I catch sight of my R.E.M. records a lump always comes to my throat. They sustained me through the 80s & 90s with a peerless run of albums. Thank you Michael, Bill, Peter & Mike. A lost treasure.
Exactly. Great string from Lifes Rich Pageant thru this one.
@@brethayworth1080 Fables isn't my favorite but come on! You can go from Murmur to Up and they're all great imo
@@njc2o fables is superb
Saint George me too 💜
@@sandibergen2523 Thanks for the comment. Stay safe.
My favorite band of all time. This is one of their great songs
The 90's was the best musical decade, and REM are beautiful and timeless.
REM are from the 80’s but ok
Not better than the 80's....c'mon??
The 90s were commercially better than the 80s
The 80s were commercially shit, all that electronic crap
I say the second half of the 1960s were the best including garage rock and psychedelia.REM are great though!
Every comment on every R.E.M song tells you everything you need to know of their endearing, ever reaching brilliance. Just as this one has. Their music lives in me.

Ain't this the cutest, warmest, safest song to listen when you need like a safe space? god for me it is
One of the best bands ever, hands down.
Honestly feel New Adventures was the best REM album. So many polished but experimental classics. Love it.
It's my favorite.
Yep
This song makes me feel so empty and regretful. I also feel a bittersweet sadness reflecting on all the years that have passed.
My words. Thanks
Weve all had hard and empty times. Just have to move on man. Keep goin.
You’re not alone ❤️
REM was at their finest in the mid 90s. I'm telling you, Monster and New Adventures in Hi-Fi were untouchable.
I don’t agree, but that’s the genius of REM. There isn’t really a wrong answer. They are the greatest band of the last 50 years. Simple as that.
91-96. Out of Time, Automatic, Monster, Hi-Fi. EPIC streak.
Just a Frecking amazing band. The music means so much to me.
What a gorgeous song. Such songwriting, musical, singing fineness. Delivered with such finesse. Exceptional artists.❤
Absolutely
I miss them 😢
REM is just one of the very best bands ever. They never get old. One of my fav Alt bands.
Wow hard to believe that this album came out 20 years ago, i'm sure that 20 years ago to this very moment I was listening to this as a care free teenager. Loved it then and love it now.
@miguelitoven agreed; the best
Los teclados en esta canción son encantadores! qué hermosos arreglos. Amo REM
The greatest American band of all time
Couldn't agree more. So diverse and honest
Yes, they are Adam. Although The Doors tend to get way underrated.
Only American? Best of all countries
I think Newsweek had a poll on this, Rem was on there but not top 5 or anything. They said their later career dip hurt them. Pearl Jam was ranked #1. They also had Journey, Van Halen and Aerosmith on the list. It had 30 artists, I believe.
Internationally, and with the critics, certainly in the UK, R.E.M. are the pinnacle of American bands. They are the closest thing to The Doors since The Doors and far more diverse in sounds and styles. The UK likes changing styles that have an underlying consistency and theatrical accomplishment in their music gods. REM's postmodernist and widescreen yet also small town imaginations and sympathies fits the bill of what intellectuals might romanticise of America as a land of Nighthawks and nightswimmers, beehive female singers, tragic or comedic movie stars, barbecues in large, sunkissed, back gardens, and getting wonderfully stuck in LA traffic. ’Blame' The Beatles for our high tastes - REM are very admirable.
The music you listen to especially when you're growing...at an any age.. it's raises you like the proverbial village.. more than family more than anything.. there are cells in you forever vibrating to this.. and it's so good
You are the star tonight
You shine electric outta sight
Your light eclipsed the moon tonight
Electrolite
You're outta sight
... BEST LYRICS EVER???
this song and nightswimming feel to me like little slices of something... bigger. Bigger than what, i don't know, but i do know that i'm never going to fully comprehend how beautiful these songs are, or ever get to the level of genius that Michael Stipe was at when he write them.
Similar songs yeah. And THEY wrote them
Both songs have exavtly the same piano playing in the mix. REM recycled a lot of their music though. Especially some of the oldest stuff. They would simply change the lyrics.
@@DadBodDrumming The piano in Nightswimming sounds nothing like in Electrolite.
Both are fabulous. For something else special listen to Michael and Natalie Merchant do a live duet, magical!
This is an absolute stunner
I can not believe this song is 20 years old. Genius!
This song is medicine for me right now, thank you.
in recovery personal medicine is what you do not what you take. hang in there all poor of spirit.
medicine for the mind -- body and soul
So too can be some electrolite... the answer is out there...
Theres eerie signs to Bill leaving in every HIFI video. Bill drives off in his dune buggie alone, leaving the other 3 to forge forward themselves.
The exit stage left on How the West was Won video while the other three exit right.
Unintended but I love it
Massively underrated track.
Your eyes are burning holes through me - amazing line
You rarely find a music video that is such a pastiche of different ideas where all the ideas make sense and blend in together.
I love REM I love this song..I want it played at my funeral and I want my epitaph to be " I'm out of here" God Bless REM..they have put something special in my life that no other band could have done
Oh that piano, please!!!! So simple, so magic. And the eternal voice of Michael, like pleading,,, Emotional!
Bought my first rem album 40 years ago. Still in ❤
I have listened to Electrolite about 200 times. My favorite REM song; and, I love them all (own multiple CDs). This one is very musically involved & textured, a great video too.
I'm afraid that times like these, I mean, the sounds, the atmosphere, the looks, the ways of saying, never come back
This album mixes Heavy Rockers with lighter songs so great. You got happy stuff and depressing stuff on this one. Great album.
One of REM's best songs. LOVE this band!!!
Brilliant
beautiful harmony all the way through, REM at their best, epitomises the closing years of the 20th century...
what a mood masterpiece ..stipe's ode to Los Angeles and our fossil fuel culture ...love the shout - outs to Mulholland Drive ..
I discover something new every time I listen to their music. It's almost as if the music grows with you.
Normally, I don't really care about music videos, but this band is simply best at everything.
REM music for the soul.
it's called manna but most got tired of it and wanted quail.
My favorite band of all time, every time I hear their music something inside me smiles, cryes and feels alive. I’m proud that I was able to see them performing at mexico city, actually their very last show as a group (for now, and hoping to see them together one more time) was at mexico city 💔💔💔
I feel you brother. I got to see them in london in 2008. Amazing show. I think they played maybe 30 songs, which was probably the reason it turned out to be their last ever UK gig. Very grateful indeed I got to see them live.
One of the few REM songs I really like and I never hear it anywhere. I have to look it up when it pops into my head.
I love the old man shot at 1:30, he really captures that mixed nostalgia, looks happy and at peace with life, but also a bit of sadness, memories. Fits so well to the song
It is the expressions on his face that are the most notable part of the video to me. He reminds me of my dad too.
The best commentary on life is tru REM's music and Michael Stipe's poetry.
One of my favorite songs EVER. I live in LA and there is nothing like actually driving on Mulholland drive and playing this song.
Sounds good driving through the Yorkshire dales as well.
All the way to Reno
@@jasonbarbush4991 another favorite. I MISS THEM!!!!
I'm drinking my Electrolytes, Lemon-Lime Gatorade while listening to this 1996 classic. What a great song. It's an omage to everything Hollywood and entertainment, a thumbs up to the legends who made it what it is. Electrolite you're out of sight.
That's how greatness sounds.

I love this song and music video so very much. It has always been very close to my heart
R.E.M how i miss you , now you 're a legend , the legend of athens .
I'm listening to this while drinking my Electrolytes ( Gatorade Lemon-Lime) on a hot summer day, July 9th 2024. This tribute to the legends of cinema and TV from 1996. It's as good as it was then, a release of their New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Electrolite, you're out of sight.
I can’t think of a more timeless song that waved goodbye to the 20th century. the most eventful and historical centuries in human history. R.E.M. broke up over 10 years ago and just like the 20th century left their legacy open to interpretation
Wow. Even after being obsessed with this band 10 years ago, I can truly say that REM's music is timeless for me. I LOVE how the piano melody remains consistent all the way through the song. It makes me want to get lost in it forever! Anyway, I'm so sad I never got a chance to see them! :( I hate that I was born a tad too late. Still, my gf n I have high hopes that they will make one more comeback!
Don´t be sad Eduardo... They weren´t as good live... They were FANTASTIC!!! :-D
Had that chance. Still best concert of my life. After UP they had small European tour just for fans, I was a member of the Fan club back then and they played few concerts for free, for members of Fan clubs, I am from Croatia but got invitation for concert in Vienna. Concert was in a small club, maybe 600 people capacity, and it was just unbelievable.
perhaps Micheal Stipe will do some solo work. there is a reason for everything.
As long as they are alive, I think there is a chance.
@@Kantaroification what an awesome story. You are privileged indeed to have seen such a brilliant band in so intimate a setting. Hope the memories are still strong! www.remhq.com/news/find-of-the-week-vienna-fan-club-show-laminate-1998-3/
One of the great bands, not given the credit they deserve
I miss them so much.
REM, love the melancholy hopefullness..."You are alive.... Electrolite... You're outta sight..."
some days life seems like a dream and that i already died long ago. delusion or not it means something to me thinking OMG it's already 2019. Life seems like a dream as if I already passed into the spirit world.
Like a eulogy for the 20th century. All the advances it brought and the terrible wars and loss of personal identity that came with them. But ultimately it ends with the message to keep going and celebrate the good things in life.
The whole album is kind of like that actually, but this one in particular.
Masterpiece song and video clip. Ah and masterpiece album!
I'm not scared, I'm out of here.
Beutiful song and the video is very imaginative too. I love it. A typical ending song.
Vajda Veronika Yeah, when music videos were a piece of art.
And when you really haven't heard one of their songs before, at first it seems strangely alien. Then, as you listen, something grows within to meet the music and that greatness can be recognised. Such astonishing music.
God, how I love these guys! I hope they were happy with their success! Bless their souls!
Just saw a R.E.M. tribute band last night and it reminded me just how beautiful this song is.
Easily the best song on that album. Love the melody, the mood. And seeing the metal suited guy on go cart, the easy react is, 'Oh yeah, it is a Spike Jonze directed video.'
music for the soul.. timeless modern day poetry.. one of my favourite albums and definitely one of my favour songs
you can write your own poem about your life story just as well. anything goes.
So beautiful it makes you glad to be alive
How I miss REM...
Cool fall afternoon in Louisville,KY back in 1996 I guess-this song got repeated on my car CD player at least fifty times. I was a young guy, around 25 and had my entire life in front of me and the possibilities seemed endless. Man, what memories.
UNIQUE R.E.M. FOREVER
great thanks to this channel of Utube, its a pleasure to watch
I cannot explain it, but for ever time need to drive many hours to drive to visit relatives, this song comes to mind, The stress and the maybe joy mix in a crazy way. Unique.
I miss you so much. And the music too! Come back!
Just when I begin to doubt everything and wonder what the point really is, its songs like this that remind me life is for living. Thank you REM you were the best and I'm glad I got to see you live once.
the piano throws rem into a whole new direction. really, one of the only reasons why i wanted to learn this instrument. romantic and laid back at the same time. just a magnificent piece!
Everytime I hear R.E.M song is like listening 1st time to some amazing top hit released just now
Man, I love, love, love this song.
REM should be a BAND Again! WooF!

All of these songs mean so much to me. I almost forgot about them... everyone has its own special meaning to me. REM will always be special!
Always loved this song. New Adventures in Hi-Fi is such an underrated album.
I once had a 15 minute conversation with the lead singer of Belle and Sebastian (Stuart Murdoch) about REM and failed to mention this song. Great conversation, missed opportunity.

When this song came out I was obsessed. I had forgotten how good R.E.M. is, and then about a year ago I remembered and vowed to never forget again. Takes me back to downloads from Napster while I worked on my great American novel in high school, lol!!!
Eh, Napster. I did it the Old School way - a friend copied her REM record albums onto cassette tapes for me. I eventually became a sorta responsible adult and paid the $$ and bought the CDs. At thrift stores, used copies.
