Teenage Engineering 400 Modular demo by Baseck and Cuckoo

  • Teenage Engineering is launching their new Pocket Operator Modular systems this spring. Here we're seeing the 400 system being demonstrated by modular musician Baseck. He's explaining as he's going along, so I didn't wanna mute the mic. In the end I'm exploring it myself, and I've cut out the mic so that you can hear the raw sound.

    I’m so glad we’re seeing some people with analog/modular synth experience playing with the 400! A lot of the earlier videos were people messing around and it really didn’t show how versatile the system can be!

    Okay! This would have been just the thing to show me about four years ago, just as I started building my own system. It would have probably saved me a lot of cash and debt, but left me without all the working knowledge of electronics that I’ve reaped in those efforts. I think it’s the perfect time to release a setup just like this, and just this price range and size. This is the perfect sort of modular for anyone looking to either get into it without paying quite so much, and without the life sentence (as in life sacrificed). I would give this to maybe a pianist or maybe a piano teacher, like my moms. The modular scene is still booming, and it’s so true you get so so much flexibility, especially if you wanna voltron-merge yours with your best friends’. This is awesome.

    @CuckooMusic This is exactly what I meant when I said you can have one guy sit at a system and then have someone else sit at the same system and it will be totally different. The moment Baseck sat down and started tweaking it became "his" system! If I sat in front of it, or Tobias or you, it would sound entirely different! Modular = Magic!!

      I don't quite understand some design decisions. eg it lacks reverse polarity protection, as claimed on TE's site, which is like 10 c worth of components..WTF

    • @johnmiddleton4291
      @johnmiddleton4291 5 лет назад +3

      The modules use a 3 pin power connector when running off the included power supply and distribution bus for the pre-configured systems. The connector can only be placed in one direction, because it locks with a tab. So there is no reverse polarity needed for beginners using the system as a standalone. It's hard to tell but the actual connection to the module is probably 3 pin too, or possibly hard wired. I would bet the 10 pin is entirely separate.
      I guess they figure once you are ready to expand into full euro, you should be to confirm connections to power before turning things on?

    @danielleanderson6371 5 лет назад +2

    Okay so I'm like just now dipping my toes into synth stuff, so I need someone to check my understanding of what's happening. Basically what these guy are doing is taking a wave and tweaking it in subtle ways, using the sequencer to play a loop so they can hear how it sounds as music with different pitches and tempos and whatnot, to more or less handcraft a sound. That sound, then, can be used for other purposes, perhaps run on the sequencer loop to be played over by another sound, or as the sound itself, controlled by a midi keyboard or something. The sound they've created, or maybe more accurately the modification or "modulation" is what a patch is, hence the name modular synthesis. It's not modular because you can put a bunch of these things together (as modules) to create complex sounds so much as it is modular because you modulate the sound.
    Does that sound about right, or is my understanding flawed?

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  5 лет назад +1

      I think you have grasped it all.

    • @danielleanderson6371
      @danielleanderson6371 5 лет назад +1

      Cool, thank you! It seems really obvious now that I explain it back to myself, but when I first watched this demo months back I was like, "What's the big deal? He's just messing with a loop." The loop is just there as a means to propagate the sound and isn't supposed to be impressive itself so much as demonstrate all the actually impressive noises he's handcrafting that could be used in many ways, kind of like a painter making splotches to show off the cool blend of pigments they crafted, or perhaps show off a type of brush stroke. The thing about sound, of course, is that you have to keep playing it to keep hearing it, whereas with paint it only has to be painted once to be seen countless times.
