    Just bought mine a week ago, it's my very first (not technically a synth, but kinda is) piece of hardware i've ever owned. It is truly a gem, and the the samples are amazing that come with it, sounds so original like nothing you could really find anywhere else. Beautiful design, and a wonderful instrument. I hope they never stop making them, TE is a great company. Your channel has the best tutorials I could honestly find that gives you a legit visual explanation, thank you.

    I purchased a PO-33 about 7 months ago. But a few days ago, for no apparent reason, it stopped turning on. I found him with a completely dead screen and couldn't resuscitate him. I did everything that is written on the manufacturer's website, but it did not give any results. I began to study this issue and it turned out that this is a common problem faced by po owners, it just stops turning on for no apparent reason. As far as I understand there is some error in the design or program. I wrote to the support service of teenage engineering, to which they replied to me that they could not replace my tool and could not repair it. They sent me a list of components so that I could order them and repair them myself. This is strange. Because absolutely nothing happened to PO, it just lay idle for a few days, and stopped working. If even the specialists of teenage engineering can't fix this flaw (judging by how often PO owners face this problem), why do they offer to fix it for me on their own? Then they stopped replying to my messages. I was very disappointed. I paid $ 90 for a piece that didn't even work for half a year. I was refused replacement, technical support, and no response at all. And the output sound of this thing is really shitty.

    • @Gwyn94
      @Gwyn94 2 года назад +1

      That's kind of what scares me about the more expensive pocket operators. Some of them (such as the PO-33) are approaching the price point of more expensive, more durable gear. I got one (the 20 Arcade) used that had 2 columns of defective LEDs, and that makes the sequencer nearly useless, since you need those to see which chords you have enabled/patterns are selected. Having exposed contacts like that really just sketches me out, and by the time you buy one of the cases, you might as well have just saved up a little more for a second hand Model:Samples.
      I love the idea of the Pocket Operators, but for any of them but the cheapest, I feel like the build quality doesn't justify the cost.

    Jakob, your videos are remarkably well done, and your speaking os clear and concise. I've seldom seen an instructional video that organized all the information so well. I rather wish TE had put all this in the user guide, but hey, you've done it so well I'll turn to you. I own the PO 12, 20, 32 (and microtoniq) and finally the 33.
    I might as well mention here that I've discovered that I can use my metronome, a Korg MA-1, to provide a sync track, so I don't need to use a PO as a sync master at all. The Korg, which I bought for about $10, has headphone out, and several sounds you can select for your beat, and at least one of them will provide a sync beat to the POs. I've tried starting, stopping and changing the tempo with it also and it has worked. So try that sometime!

      @@AJC19811 Certainly possible. And there are a few more editing features in the Volca, but getting samples onto it is such a pain. The app that made it somewhat simpler is no longer supported on iOS and is unusable after OS 12. Bummer.

    Hi Jakob, thanks for the video. I seem to always learn something new (or a few things) when watching your videos. I do have a quick question, what would be the easiest way to do the data backups with the line in/out. As someone mentioned you could use iPhone voice memos. I’d get a fancy zoom recorder, but in the meantime I’m trying to think of a cost effective/portable workaround. Thanks again!

    This is such a thorough, instructive and helpful vid, so many thanks and much appreciated! After watching this and another couple of vids on the PO-33 I am now really convinced that I should get one. I also have a PO-20 Arcade, which I love using, especially because of the chords. I also have a Korg Volca Sample but haven't used it much. Would you say that the PO-33 is more versatile than the Volca Sample, or be so kind as to offer any comments on how they compare? OR maybe that is just too big a question! Moreover, please keep up the excellent work.

    Thanks a lot. I've been wanting to get back to basics, after having computers dead over and over. And actual productive creativity is giving way to hours of filing through VST Instruments and presents. Lusting over gear you can't afford, thinking you need it to put out the best music (Sound Quality) or to be taken as a "Professional". It's not a MPC or 404SP but they cost half your a months rent. It's packed with functionality and real time effects, what more could you want at that price. I'm buying one ASAP!

    • @highlanderes
      @highlanderes 6 лет назад +1

      It would be a good choice as on PO-33 you have max 4 simultaneous samples including everything like drum and base sounds. More than that and they start to interrupt each other.
      You can work around it to a point, ex. some drum samples combine a kick and a cymbal, or you can sample a complete drum track from a melody, but you will have more freedom with two units.
      I bought PO-32 Tonic when it came out and use it with PO-33.

      I'm still using the same iPhone 6s to record videos with that I was using for all my videos during 2017. I did upgrade to a newer iPad and I started using LumaFusion last year too. The biggest difference are the extra mobile camera lenses I'm now using. I purchased a cheap set of three lenses and so for the past 10 vids or so I've been using a wide angle lens and a macro. I've got a video on my channel about the lens set. 😉 ruclips.net/video/G7DHkuJuIL0/видео.html

      Hi, one more question : once you recorded a sound on melodic, is it possible to cut the sound and keep just the part you want, so it can save some space for the other recording ? Because let's say I record a 5 seconds audio but in the end only keep one second of the sound (because i don't need it), well it's still 4 seconds I can't use for another records, you see what I mean ?

    Is there an easy way to find the end of that recording? In Ableton, even on the highest input level, I only get a visible recording line in the first 15 seconds, then the line looks flat. Since it tool so long to count upwards I left the room and now have a recording that is too long, but I don't know how much too long? Is there a strategy that makes this work? Does the recording end with a small blip in the line shown in Ableton? Because after 140 bars at 120 bpm I have a small dot.

    I'm really having a hard time with the data dump. Backing up sounds and patterns through the line out into an audio interface using Ableton. I get an audio track that sounds like some crazy white noise. When I try to then restore that audio through the input on the PO33 its not working. I tried both using write+sound+play, and write+sound+record. I have been looking for a video that can demonstrate uploading and backing up patterns and sounds, and also re uploading that info to the PO33. Any reply would be greatly appreciated! Great stuff by the way.

      I had a tough time with the backup and restore feature, I first tried using Audacity and failed before contacting Teenage Engineering to ask about other programs that might work. Teenage Engineering recommend Microtonic for backup, they suggested others had used iPhone voice memo as well. I did not have a smartphone to try this, so I tried Garageband instead being that it was an apple app. After some experimentation I managed to get full backup and restore. I went back to Audacity with what I learned and managed to get it to work there also.
      Recording Backup
      1. It does not matter what audio software you use to record your backup. Make sure no plugins or effects are active
      2. It helps when recording backup to have the PO-33 at maximum volume
      3. It also helps if the audio software input volume is set to record at around 60% (I tried recording at about 50% to avoid clipping and this only resulted at around 70-75% of data restored before error).
      4. Record in 2 channel stereo at 16 bit 44,100, save without compression to either .wav or .aiff
      Restoring Backup
      1. It does not matter what audio software/hardware you use to restore your backup
      2. The volume should be set at around 50% on the playback software/hardware. Set the PO-33 to about 6 (don’t know if this matters but the volume defaults to that anyway)
      3. If you have a high cpu load (or your pc is acting up) this creates issues with the transfer of the playback, there is no buffer under run protection on the PO-33. If your cpu stalls AT ALL transfer will fail.
      4. If your backups are not playing back smoothly try another device. I saved the .wav files to a flash drive and played them back from my blu-ray player with a line out from the headphone jack in my stereo amplifier to the PO-33. No stalling, No issues. (Transfer rate 1.4Mbps)
      These are just my experiences with backup and restore on the PO-33. I am not suggesting that this is the only way, this is just what worked for me. The key is do not get discouraged, there is light at the end of the tunnel!

    Is there a file i can download to get the factory sounds back? I may have recorded over everything with ghostbusters sounds...

      There's a way to factory reset the product but not sure if it somehow retains its factory sounds.

      In PO 35 Speak factory reset is "insert battery" while pressing "write" and "pattern". Im not quite sure if PO 33 uses the same method. Back up your current files first before trying it.

    Hey, nice review! Once data has been dumped to your CPU/MAC, it's saved as audio, correct? Which can then be manipulated in Ableton or any other software, correct? Thanks a lot!!!

    awesome workshop Jakob, i’m thinkin’ about getting a PO-33, will it sync up to an Arturia Microbrute? (Microbrute CV sync out to the PO-33 but I want the PO-33 audio to be input into the Microbrute input with both PO-33 and Microbrute audio mixed together at the Microbrute output, both units synchronized. Would this work? Thank you very much!

    Thank you for all your advice. I'm going to watch the video to see if it's in there but maybe you can help, how do I load individual samples or copy individual samples into separate buttons rather than have them spread through the whole interface. I know this is possible as I've seen plenty of people do it I just don't know how to do it myself. Any help or advice would be thoroughly appreciated. Thanks again for teaching me. Sorry if the answers in this video and I haven't seen it yet. This is something I really want to do and will make so much better it's already awesome of course and can't believe I'm holding something that you helped create that's a real buzz.

      I suggest you watch the video. My videos are well structured and contains highly condensed information. If you skip stuff, you’ll miss out on info. This one even has a menu that shows up at every section. Everything you need to know about how the PO33 works is in this video. It’s the most thorough video on RUclips.

    Very cool review/tutorial! But why do you show exactly 13 of the 16 drum sounds in every drum slot? Why not all of them?

      Thank you! 👊🏼 To answer your question...it was kind of a brain fart on my end. Even though I worked in that video for a month I didn't notice that thing with the drum playback until the video had been up for a week... 😅😂

    I just got my PO-33, and drum editing is terrible. You don't cover it at all in this video. Whenever I try to edit the in/out of a slice, it adjusts the in/out of the slices around it. What should be easy becomes a trial and error crap shoot. Any guidance on this?

    Hi Jakob, thanks for the indept video. Such a cool little sampler. I want mutliple! :) One question that's not clear: Can you select the input mic/line by pressing buttons or is it done automatically when you have a jack in the input?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  6 лет назад

      The selection is automatic. Line in will be activated when you plug something into it and with nothing plugged in the mic is active instead. 👍🏼 And thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed the video!

      Thanks, so if you have a jack plugged in for sync the mic is deactivated? It would have been nice to have a way to select the input. Or is it activated when receiving audio from line in?

    great video, Jakob 😃😃
    but i don't understand, why note-length at time 19:12, when you have trim ??

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  4 года назад +1

      Because trim sets the length for the sample. However note length only sets it for that particular note.
