Dude. This was exactly what I wanted to see... Love it. I had hopes that the speak would be capable of sounds beyond voice and gritting them up etc. My hopes are fulfilled!
This video was sorely needed! Embarrassingly I’ve owned the PO-35 for several years before realizing why I was never able to record percussive samples that sounded clear and full :) and why I was confused that the PO-35 didn’t seem to have the vocal synthesis that I expected! (I assumed it’d be text-to-speech)
I wondered what would happen when the Speak synthesized non-vocal sounds. Synthesizing the cello resulted in some really interesting sounds that could be made into something cool. I get my PO35 later this week and can't wait to try this stuff out myself. Thanks for the videos - they make this wait a lot easier!
That’s what I wanted to hear too! I understood the part about speech synthesis vs. sampling, but was still interested in how the PO-35 would sound like when used ”wrong”, with non-speech audio. Sounds like it’ll have gloriously unique possibilities for making the noisier kind of music 😌
Thanks Jacob. I have the Arcade (weird), the Tonic (love it), and the Speak (fun, but...). Next purchase based on your review will be the K.O., as I would like something that can sample real sounds.
I ordered the PO-33 as soon I watched Jakob's review/demo. I have many, many, many apps and hardware to provide samples for the device. so don't feel I need a voice synthesizer. The PO-33 is the first in the series that I've been interested in.
Bought a PO-33 after watching your's, cuckoo's and RMR's video. Now goes the long arduous wait for the sucker to arrive. I keep watching your videos trying to stave off my mania. Thanks!
Thank you. It was a video with the information I wanted. After thinking about it for a week, I decided to buy Po-33 after watching your video. I wanted the original note to be maintained.
Not quite, but close. I did a documentary style interview with Magnus (Sonic Charge) who did the coding for PO-35. Check it out > ruclips.net/video/D730KX75kHk/видео.html . No, the tonic engine can not sample like a sampler, but it can read data dumps from microtonic and po32. So the drum sounds can be switched out. I’ve shared 12 genre specific kits myself ➡️ ruclips.net/p/PLvNQD1EpaiNMZGIE56SjEIu4SDQ4Pyd-d
Amazing, that is exactly what my brain needed to hear. I literally thought that PO-35 voice can sample as well but it just processes the sound into synth format rather than original audio file. And that the sound sounds same/simillar. Also what about the PO-32 Tonic and PO-137 Rick and Morty? Can they record audio? What do they do with it, how does it sound? That would be very helpful, thanks!
The PO-137 and PO-35 are basically the same machine. They look different and they come with different factory sounds, but they’re both synthesizers. The PO-32 is a pure drum Synthesizer and it cannot record samples. It only uses the mic for receiving data. You can find out more about it in my PO-32 vid ruclips.net/video/pe1tNRXeuAc/видео.html
I bought the tonic first, but I wanted to sample my music and thinking the speak was what I wanted I bought it too. Now I'm pretty sure I'm buying the k.o. next.
It boggles my mind what the future of these things will be. They keep getting more interesting with each new release. Are the P0-33 and 35 available for order Jakob?
Hello jakob, have u noticed some buzz/hiss in your po 33 samples? On mine, I can hear an audible buzz below the sampled sound, that also become pitched when I shift the notes! I don't know if it's the way it is supposed to work or if my unit is broken...
No I haven’t. I’m curious though. Does this happen when sampling from both the built in microphone and the line input? Also what have you been sampling from? Let’s explore all possibilities.
Happy I could help! You’re not alone in having a hard time deciding which one to go for between the 33 or the 35. I think that Teenage Engineering should have been more clear in their marketing for these products. Hey if you need a good tutorial on the PO33 when you get it then check out my extensive review ruclips.net/video/NmJoW-tiBSM/видео.html You’ll find no other video on RUclips as detailed as that one. It’s even got a menu so it’s easy to find what you want to know.
Please if you can help me. I want to test both PO33 & PO35 sampling bird sounds. Ideally a song (ie finch), and a call (ie seagull laugh). I can provide you wav files in the case. I expect that PO35 could work with bird vocals as the frequency range is similar between humans and birds. However, this device is optimised for our voice and I'm not sure if work with all birds sounds. In this case, I will need the PO33 for my upcoming project. Thanks in advance.
You can of course play back different pitches on the PO35. I have an extremely detailed, in depth review and tutorial featuring this Pocket Operator. You can learn everything about it and I do suggest that you check it out. I’ve even added a menu that video. You’ll find no other videos like it on RUclips. Here: ruclips.net/video/8mybH_CxMy8/видео.html
It's called "AmenBreakGen" or "AmenBreak Generator". I love it because it allows me to do stuff like this: ruclips.net/video/t6xT6ytrKkc/видео.html - However I do not recommend buying it because it is old and haven't been updated in ages. Also it won't work on iOS 11 because this is a 32-bit app and iOS 11 is 64-bit only. It doesn't look like it's going to be updated, it's abandonware basically. I'm able to use it because I'm still on iOS 10.
It all depends on what you need/want. Do you need a pure sampler like PO33. As you can hear in the video the PO33 doesn't do anything with the sound, it's just a sampler. However if you intent to work with synth voices you'll have to go for PO35. It's not a sampler but a synthesiser and was made for voices. If you want to see what both units actually does then I have two extremely detailed videos on my channel (you won't find any videos as deep and detailed as mine on RUclips). LINKS: PO33: ruclips.net/video/NmJoW-tiBSM/видео.html - PO35 ruclips.net/video/8mybH_CxMy8/видео.html
I don't use it myself but Garage band is still free and if you don't want to spend any money on an app then I'd recommend trying that one first. It's very capable, I just do not like the interface myself. Personally I use Multitrack DAW by Harmonicdog. The base app costs about $10 and then you can unlock more tracks ($5 for 8 / $8 for 16). It's got a compressor per channel plus 2 band parametric and 2-band shelving filters EQ's per channel too, also a very capable iPhone app.
Or u could use n track studio although pro version is 30 odd £ lol I won it on a competition on Facebook and I use it quite a lot also you could record pocket operators into beatmaker aswell
I have a feeling that you’re looking for a sampler. In that case it’s the PO-33 K.O that you want. The PO33 is just a sampler and it does not re-synthesise the sounds.
@@JakobHaq I heard that you're supposed to be able to use 4 spunds at a time but mine seems to only want to play one at a time. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
This is a weird comparison where you play chromatic mode in one, but fx/chord/etc in the other. I agree they're different, but it seems you intentionally chose to not show chromatic mode for PO35
The whole point of this video is > sound ruclips.net/video/8mybH_CxMy8/видео.html . And this one about PO-33 > ruclips.net/video/NmJoW-tiBSM/видео.html . I then got so many questions about the real difference between these two units. Many people still thought of both of them as “samplers”. So I then had to make a response video. I knew that if people went out and bought the PO-35 with the belief of it being a straight up sampler, they might end up disappointed because it’s not a sampler. Yes it records sounds, but everything one records into the 35 will end up sounding like synthesised sounds. The 33 however is a sampler and the stuff that one records into it, sounds the same when played back (minus sample rate and bit-depth loss) . Here’s my first response video > ruclips.net/video/3cOPPGPE68c/видео.html . After publishing that video some people still didn’t get the difference. So I ended up making the video you just commented on in where I show the difference in > sound < by playing back stuff being recorded into them. This way, people can clearly hear the difference. This video is all about the sound and the concept between these pocket operators nothing else. . If anyone wants to know more about the functionality about these units (including pitch/note ranges) then I recommend watching the two in-depth tutorial/walkthroughs I did. . Also, I’m playing all of the different synth-sound settings on the 35 to show all of its different voice modes, where’s the 33 only has one sound mode since it does not alter the sound. I never focused on melody or anything. Just the sound. These videos all came out in short succession and so I felt no need to again explain the pitch or note ranges that I already talked about in my full tutorials.
jeez guyz do you even listen to his videos u_u ONE IS VOCAL SAMPLER AND THE OTHER A SAMPLER !!! with the first you should sample voice (but hey you're welcome to do what ever you want and experiment) and the second one is a sampler, wich mean you can sample voice , noise, sound, music what ever... if you still don't get it buy the 2 and then you'll understand maybe srry i had to say it
I know this video is old... but I think a lot are missing the point. You don’t choose one... you get both really. They are a great pair.
One is a straight up sampler (plays back exactly what you record). The other records but process the recording into speech synthesis.
Dude. This was exactly what I wanted to see... Love it. I had hopes that the speak would be capable of sounds beyond voice and gritting them up etc. My hopes are fulfilled!
The speak is awesome on so many levels. I like it mostly for voices of course but sending drum loops through it gets interesting pretty quickly. 👊🏼
That's the comparison I needed. Love vocal chords on the 35, but it's obviously not really a sampler.
This video was sorely needed! Embarrassingly I’ve owned the PO-35 for several years before realizing why I was never able to record percussive samples that sounded clear and full :) and why I was confused that the PO-35 didn’t seem to have the vocal synthesis that I expected! Really shows what they are good for, thanks
I ordered the P.O.-33 first day. It’s like a mini mpc.
Have fun with it and hope it gets to your doorstep quickly! 👍🏼
That cello on the KO sounds gloriously filthy!!!
I'm going to try to get more out of the cello, just because it sounds so filthy good! 👊🏼

Thank you for this comparison. :) I hope everyone is happy with their choice. :)

Can you use a PO-35 to process audio in real time like an effects box?
I might get one soon, maybe in a couple months, I cant wait to use it

Great explanation. Thanks man.
I want a po with the scale feature of the po35 and the sampling of the po33
35 is like sampling into a speak n' spell, if that were possible. B - ) with bonus tonic drums included
