My name is Eric and I travel with my cats, “Tara” & “Opie” in a 24ft 2002 Ford Bigfoot Class C and tow either a 2014 Smart Car named “Tater Tot” or my 2012 Harley Softail Slim named “Black Betty” in a 6x10 trailer. We travel about 35 miles a day chasing 70 degrees year-round since 2010.

I fell like that, impaled myself on a pier piling (wooden post), but woke up wearing an orange jumpsuit in the Santa Cruz County Jail. I wasn't arrested, just housed until I woke up. I had a bandage on my right side abdomen and extreme pain. I could barely barely barely stand up, was released with a bus pass and an ibuprofen. I rode the bus for over an hour, walked two miles to my van, passed out inside. Woke up the following day. Then drove to the VA hospital where I had emergency surgery to remove the large splinters of wood from my colon. I spent 3 days in the hospital and then 6 weeks walking around until I could function again. My liver was bruised and swollen twice it's size. Amazing how the police thought I was just drunk and didn't know that I nearly died from sepsis. I could have been dead within an hour. Cops didn't care.
Be careful and take care of yourself. I had a similar fall just not nearly as high and I fractured my lumbar spine and dislocated and broke my right wrist (and I am right handed). I was in a clam/turtle shell body brace for my back and a brace on the wrist. Needless to say I could not put my hands behind my back which made the toilet an unpleasant adventure. I was fortunate that I have a supportive wife and we made it through. I still can't do all the things I used to, but I am walking, talking and able bodied now and out RV'ing. I am also very thankful it was not worse. And yes at 59 it was my first ever ride in an ambulance. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope all is well in the end. Keep the faith.

Wishing you a speedy recovery Eric. Im sure you know but speaking from experience, wrap your ribs with a ace bandage. The added support makes life a little less painfull.
Welcome to my World! I've been a working musician for over 58 years. I also was in the Air Force & worked a day gig for around 35 years. I bought a RV five years ago and I just finished everything Solar, extra water tank, Instant Hot Water.... Four years ago I slipped in a huge puddle of water in a restaurant. It ruined my life, I'm in constant pain, I am unable to do the simplest tasks. Your Whole World can change in an instant. It's horrible, I feel your pain. Hopefully you'll make a fast recovery. Good thing Ali left now and not later when you really loved her. Fortunately for me my wife has been with me over 45 years and helps me. Get well soon buddy....❤

Oh man! That sucks! But you're absolutely right that it could have been a lot worse so I'm glad you're not hurt any worse than you were.
The crazy thing is that when I was watching your last couple of videos, I was thinking to myself "Oh, I sure hope he doesn't fall off that roof!" I'm not an RVer but I have recent experience with broken bones and a several months long close relationship with a pair of crutches and surgery and a leg brace so yeah. Absolutely. It's insane how much harder everything is when you're hurt.
I did have (I think) at least one cracked rib once when I was a teenager and yes. That's a pain you never forget. I also kept re-injuring my cracked rib because I was a very active teenager so the ordeal just went on and on. Not recommended. Take your time and take care of yourself if you can.
Glad to know things aren't as bad as they could have been. God speed with healing. We can only speculate why things happen, but if you think this was some sort of wake-up-call/lesson, then I'm sure you will continue to share your story and help others to learn from what you've experienced. On or off the camera. Sending prayers for comfort as you heal. Felix's place seems to be a great place to heal. It has been a comfort and worked for others. Slow and steady might be a new mantra for a while.

Dang dude! Stay off the roof when drinking! OMG. I've hurt myself, too. I tripped and fell at a boat dock, backwards, and broke my wrist. Happened so fast.
my mom broke ribs on more than one occasion she always said the breaks on the back side were way more painful than when she had breaks toward the front. Pinched nerves are no joke! If you want to heal that as fast as possible drop your overall carb count drastically it will reduce inflammation and allow healing to happen quicker.
Only cracked one rib-- lived in fear of a sneeze. I could not even clear my throat. Tough sleddin' for awhile. Glad you're by friends.

Are you sure, Dude? My mother's car was hit by a drunk driver and she bruised her ribs. No way she could move like you do, or even think of using crutches. She could barely sit up for at least a month. She use to have to alter her breathing too, so couldn't talk like you either. You are doing amazing considering you broke, and didn't bruise.

Many years ago my father FELL OFF of a 12foot high roof, and BROKE his back. Ended up with fused vertebra at L3, L4. Eric YOU ARE VERY LUCKY !
And YES, that "stupid" hat probably saved your life. Hopefully , you (and others) can learn from your fall. Glad you are on the mend. BTW, You can expect arthritis in your future, as well as WEATHER FORECASTING with your back 😜 Ask me how I know !

I fell crossing the street in front of 2 rows of cars and scraped both of my knees and cracked and fractured my right ribs so I know what you are going through right now my accident happened on 2/16/24 I'll be praying 🙏 for you my friend take care and give Tara & Opie my love 💓
Hi Eric, I've had cracked ribs several years ago and know exactly what you are going through. It take a few weeks to heal so take it easy. I also used a wrap with Velcro to keep the ribs semi stationary and that helped a little bit. Heal up and stay well!!!
Thank God it wasn't worse Eric. My friend fell off her rv and broke her back. She was in a body brace for month's, missed a year of work. It was horrible! Please be careful and i hope you heal quickly.
Why on crutches?
Probably helps with support. Your ribs literally help hold you upright. I injured my ribs years ago skating and my immediate reaction to sooth the pain was to lean on something or I'd just collapse.
Worked in an ER and never saw anyone with broken ribs use crutches.

Contrary to the naysayers here, I have had these injuries following a car accident and I know the pain of cracked ribs. The wrong move and that pain would trigger terrible muscle spasms that wrapped around my ribs and back and sucked the breath right out of me. I couldn't breathe and I couldn't move. Felt like I was gonna die. Prescribed or not, I can understand the crutches. I was in a chair from a fractured leg at the same time or I might have tried them myself... to take the pressure off. Eric, I feel your pain and wish you a speedy recovery.
As a carpenter I have had many injuries over my career. One of which was I fell through a skylight and cracked my ribs. So, I know exactly what you are going through. Will take a few weeks before you can resume normal activities. Wishing a speedy recovery.
I cracked a couple ribs working at a printing company like 20 years ago (in my forties) and it took like 4 months to heal. Wow you healed quickly. That's crazy amazing.
Didn’t say I heeled completely had to get back to work, was able to do most everything with limited pain. I was in my early 30’s then so healed fasted. .
You need to stay put until you are 100% well. No compromising. Do get rest. Do stop long travel. Stop drinking. Just stop for a while. That should help you heal faster. I fell off the top of a 6 ft ladder trying to polish our motorhome. I had zero injuries. It was a miracle. But I learned a lesson. Never do any dangerous stuff on the motorhome if you are tired or intoxicated. I was over tired. But not drinking. Just be 100% aware and alert next time you do dangerous things.

I broke some ribs getting thrown from a horse when I was a teen. Same place but on my right side. I’ll never forget that pain it was horrible.
Still hurts sometimes if I lift or carry something heavy.

I fell off my roof at my house and fractured some vertebrae and nerve damage in my spine in 05 still have pain every second of every day. I hope you recover quickly and better than I did.
I have those problems as well, they can start showing up months or years later
I don't know if this will help you but it helped me when I fractured a couple of ribs. Keep a pillow close by at all times and if you're going to cough or sneeze hold the pillow as tight as you can against your ribs. Hope this helps and our PRAYERS are with you.

I never thought you would suffer anything more painful than that scorpion incident! I don't know if this will help you or not, but when my father had open heart surgery ( with cracked ribs) they gave him a small pillow to hold tightly against his chest when he had to cough. It's worth a shot.

Get well soon Eric! I was worried when I didn't see any Phoenix NASCAR content, and feared the worst. That novelty hat 100% saved your life, best purchase you ever made. I hope things get better really soon for you, the first week or so of a broken bone is the worst. I hope also you can find some supportive people to be around. Don't take the other person leaving too personal -- 2 weeks is a lot of time to spend in a RV together, for anyone. At least now you found out this person can't be relied on (sad to say, not an uncommon experience) - keep looking, there are other people out there.

Eric, I am so sorry you are experiencing such awful pain! I totally can empathize as I slipped from the top of our RV steps one morning a couple years ago. I also broke 2 ribs…and 2 vertebrate. I know what you’re saying about how hard it is to get out of bed!!! All of a sudden simple tasks aren’t simple at all. What I can tell you is it will get better over time. But, it is important you don’t push yourself too early in this healing process. One moment at a time, and you will one day realize the pain has subsided. It will one day be a distant unpleasant memory. We are thinking of and praying for you!
Eric, I cracked 2 ribs in a fall a few months ago. People at work said to get a wrap-around compression band. Helped for a few days. Some ways it helped, some it didn't, but I'm glad I got it. Helped me breathe and move easier.
I'm in my sixties and I've broken more bones than I can count, and I can honestly say that they've all happened completely sober, which in my opinion is WAY MORE EMBARRASSING than doing while drunk.

But cracked ribs are really really really painful. After getting to FLthis winter my wife got a spiral compound fracture of her right upper himorous & damage her tight leg already severely damaged 42 yesrs sgo in a motorcycle crash. We were unable to workamp & after the ER dumped us out on the street at midnight it took days & weeks for a single orthopedic surgeon to call us back of which the Dr & hospital wanted $20K just to schefule the surgery 2 weeks later. Her sitting in a recliner for weeks waiting for her surgery was unbearable. No one eould deal with our insurance, they wanted cash upfront & some of our bills are already turned into collections. I say that one day I will show gratitude for the fact she is healing, but life can change suddenly in an instint ... Crazy. Hope you feel better soon, sir, its been a hell of a season! Davey & Sheila

I had a bad fall and I understand the pain. Buy a “reacher”, it sure helps when you have to pick something up off the floor. The heating pad became my best friend. (If the dr says you can use heat). Be patient, it’s going to take awhile to heal.

I feel for you, I also had a bad weekend, I ended up with an acute appendicitis, and had surgery on Sunday. Now I'm feeling the pain as well.
Oh boy. I hope you feel better soon. I'm getting my gallbladder removed next Thursday. I'm petrified of the post operation pain lol hoping we all get back on our feet soon.
Hopefully you can get home and spend time with your mom. If not Easter at least sometime in April. Rib pain is the worst. Although I have bad knees and they act up. So pain is subjective. Take it easy. And yes use your breathing machine often.

Lucky on your fall, I did similar fall off a boat into the water compression of spine 90 days of bed rest, ok now cannot lift anything over 30 pounds and no jumping hell vetting old

To the commenters regarding the crutches for fractured ribs he said at the end of the video that he uses them to take the weight off his hips plus when he stands up straight he starts hurting. Please commenters have some compassion for others. He had a very hard fall and whatever is needed to get some type of relief I say go for it.

I'm super glad you are ok sir! Those challenges I can relate to. If you remember when we met up at Disneyland I was in a scooter. I'm still fighting for a new hip... Every day I try to walk a little without my cane.. And don't worry about her. When my hip got bad and started having back pain on top of it, my wife took off. Stay strong and heal up!

OMG, hope you heal quickly. I’ve never broken any bones but I’ve had some really bad back issues to the point it was very difficult to walk. In times of need you really find out who is a friend indeed. Rest up, don’t lift anything heavy and take it easy.

Being Willy B fan pays off by wearing his hat. Was cleaning house stone sober and tripped over cord. Tore bicep and rotor cuff. Had surgical repair. Helpless with everyday tasks. Made my hip and knee replacement seem like walk in park.
O H H ERIC!¡ Whatthef. You are lucky, that you did have the funny hat. Last year my (in perfect health) uncle slipped on the ice, curling. He fell backwards and could not break his fall. He was In a coma for 5 weeks and could not talk when he finally came out , and now is in a care home and likely has 6 months to live. He cannot recall anything or remember beyond 5 min and still he thinks he should be home. Sad about your friend , a true measure of her loyalty, better too know now than after a year. Try to endure as much pain as possible with the least amount of pain pills because they will make you constipated. You do not want to be constipated with cracked or broken ribs, Trust me. This is your emoji when you're constipated😖😖😖😂
This is my biggest concern about RVs. All the roof maintenance, especially with solar panels, has me nervous about falling.
