As a former soldier, Germany has got the form factor right (taste aside). Those packet rice/pasta are the bane of a solider's existence when you're out in the field. The biscuits are where it's at, they're easy to eat, you can eat them on the go, they keep you full (relatively). Somehow the people who designed rations seem to think soldiers have the luxury of time to start a fire, cook and consume an entire packet of main course. I wished I had that many biscuits in my daily rations. Fortunately in my country, they've started replacing many of the rice/pasta packs with various kinds of stew. Which are far better for the field. You just tear one open and gulp everything down in less than 3 minutes.

My father is an officer in the German army and some biscuits going bad for no reason is an actual problem xD also, the sweet biscuits are only very slightly sweet in the beginning but will gradually become sweeter the more you chew them, until they taste like normal biscuits from the store.
As a German myself, we tend not to like things as sweet as some other cultures do. Living in the U.S. now, I find their desserts unbearably sweet. Every pie tastes the same because almost the only thing you can even begin to taste is the sugar. All the Germans I've known want other flavors to have a chance to come out.
Whenever an English-speaking person tries to say 'ich liebe dich' but pronounces the 'ch' as a 'ck' my brain goes to a very different, non family friendly place. 😂😂😂
I think a lot of the "main meals" would actually taste decent if they we're warmed up, the texture would also change. I mean it's pretty impractical if you're in batlle, but for the taste test it would be interesting to taste a cooked version vs. a non cooked one
At this Moment I want to know if Ollie would still refuse a "Mettbrötchen" because it's obviously a lot better (and he eats raw meat in Korea but not in Germany that's discrimination)😂😂
@@MTobias He did, but he didn't ate it completely because he was afraid of a food poisoning.

Korean raw meat, beef is a traditional dish that it's still a little dangerous. It's a kind of the ancient and middle age dish. Those who can make the selected beef only can sell it. We don't pack it since we have it only in the restaurant. The meat can be gone if you don't treat it properly. Therefore, we eat it only in the restaurant. It's still not my favourite for the eternal life.
@ No they were in a restaurant and if we don't eat it in a restaurant we go directly to the butcher and not in a supermarket. I don't even know if you can buy "Mett" for "Mettbrötchen " in the supermarket but we normally don't eat this because of the unknown cool chain. And the person in the restaurant probably also get it from the butcher.
when my dad was in the bundeswehr as a young man in the 70s he was stationed at the furthest possible point from where he lived and had a 10 hour train ride home for the holidays and they would just give him an mre and send him on his merry way. a couple hours into the journey he got hungry and disappointingly realised that his ravioli where in a tin and they just gave him a random bit of sheet metal to open it. he genuinely did not know what to do with that and ended up having to find someone with a swiss army knife that had a tin opener feature
You know tinned bread is something I regular buy at the supermarket in germany..... But than again you have to realize that Germany is a nation living on bread, we have hundreds of different types of bread in Germany....
Sonja-Rebecca H „Pumpernickel “ is what we (my whole family)usually buy tinned, it’s a type of dark brown, sometimes black, bread made from rye....it easily dries out so unless we eat a whole loaf or a package, tinned is fresher..... Other breads, sure fresh is great,...but like I said there are hundreds official breads in Germany, last count I think 300, and each one has differences by baker and region, and some you only get in certain regions.... Hell, in Germany depending on the region people have different names for the end pieces of bread (Knut, Kanten, eckerln,...)or „normal buns“ (shrimpe, norm, knoten,Rolle,Ballen....)...honestly I think „we“ germans are just very odd most of the time...
@@shihalya Ok yeah, I just know Pumpernickel in plastic packages I think 🤔 Und ja sind wir definitiv, aber jedes Land hat da wohl seine Eigenheiten 😉 PS: Kanten & Schrippe (Brötchen geht auch) 😜
In or before summertime our Aldi Süd sold tinned bread for camping vacation, for example Körnerbrot with Sonnenblumenkernen or the rye bread Josh and Ollie had here. Sometimes you also get it in regular supermarkets if they are well stocked (mostly all year). A few years ago german government advised to stock up for emergencies and so I bought some of this bread in tins. Even over the date it was quite nice, if you like Körnerbrot. I had to eat it before it expired, because the emergency never came....😄 But last summer we maybe could have used it after the big flood in NRW and Rhineland- Pfalz.
I am from Germany and I have to say, some of these dishes is really childhood for me xD Especially the sweet cookies and the Erbseneintopf. They actually taste really good, if it's home cooked. You should try it again with a better recipe:D But the most maindishes are so far from actual German food xD I love your videos! Greetings from Germany!
The "Erbseneintopf mit Cocktailwürstchen" (pea stew with wieners basically) looks exactly like the ones you can get in German supermarkets (usually in a tin can and not a plastic bag, but the content looks identical) and it's actually quite delicious. I like the version with lentils more than peas, that's kinda my comfort food, could easily eat those daily if I had too. I don't know how the Bundeswehr managed to f*** this up. :D
I really love the content! You guys are hilarious :D! I was in Germany for 3 years with the US military, but never tried a German MRE. Thanks for sharing 🙃

They aren't that bad. You can survive with them and some things in there are delicious. Espacily the little things like the choco cookies or the chocolate bar can make you happy af while ur sitting in the cold darkness for 1 1/2h. The only thing I don't like is that the main dishes are so small
@killermuffinxoxo Well, you do realise that vegetarian sausages have been on the market for about ten years now?
@@jamesreisenauer1778 vegetarian tuna?
They should have eaten hühnerfrikase to be completely traumatised 😂
"gesprengtes Huhn"
🤣🤣😂 bestimmt
With all this experience ollie and Josh can be the people who governs the process of rations being made
Particularly in this video, I see young version of Steven Carell and Jim Carrey making a new short comedy film about going to the army, 2020 version 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ollie’s expressions are soooooo good and funny!
Keep up guys! Enjoying the video in this pandemic here and please do stay safe Jolly!
I absolutely love your ration videos ❤
Josh : " Overall, not bad. "
They literally want to vomit for almost 8 minutes of this video 🤣
i think they edited a lot out. they were talking about puddings in the end, we didnt see them.
Pff
Eher Linseneintopf😅
This video: Josh watches Ollie eat German army rashons🤦♀️😂
These Biscuits called "Panzerplatten" (nickname) - literally translated Tank armor plates. :-)
Watching these videos again after watching all of the ones with Juno, you can most certainly tell Ollie is her father…. They have the same facial expressions… it’s so cute lol😂😂😂
Josh finally tells Ollie “I love you” but it’s in german!
When they say “keze ufstrich” I can’t anymore 😂
I mean in that pronounciation it really does sound like the singer of a metal band 😂
(oder PartySchlager)

Yea so... thank you guys for being brave enough to eat most of the stuff you do, I have such huge texture issue that I'd be dying if I tried to eat even a tenth of the stuff you try so thank you for trying it for us and always giving us such great content, love from a Jollybelly in Denver Colorado!!!
My father is an officer in the German army and some biscuits going bad for no reason is an actual problem xD also, the sweet biscuits are only very slightly sweet in the beginning but will gradually become sweeter the more you chew them, until they taste like normal biscuits from the store.
I’d just soak them first and save the mastication.
@@angelicpapillon No, it's the spit that makes it sweet. Actually works with normal bread too (maybe not the abomination the US-Americans call bread).
@@franzischulli4882 only the sugar addled American spit would make it taste better.
@@angelicpapillon Yeah, I think a lot of MRE biscuits are meant to be soaked.

Whenever an English-speaking person tries to say 'ich liebe dich' but pronounces the 'ch' as a 'ck' my brain goes to a very different, non family friendly place. 😂😂😂
@joshua9296 😂😂
@joshua9296 Exactly
richard getting all the love.
@@windhelmguard5295 i believe 'Dick' is 'fat' in German
I can't even lmao 💀 I laughed so hard at Josh saying "Ich liebe dick" and I was like 'M8 the internet will remember that forever"
They literally serve those pea and sausage soups in german kindergartens. Been there, done that, didn‘t especially like it.
their convos always make me happy 😂
Watching these guys is like watching a couple six-year-olds picking through Daddy's toolbox. 😆
‘i love you.. NOT’
sounds like a rejection HAHA
i kid you not
Thats actually a commen joke allong germans. You can do it with a lot of sentences and as a kid you think its hilarious 😂
@@lisapeltzer4310 true story. My friends and I do that a lot.
I think a lot of the "main meals" would actually taste decent if they we're warmed up, the texture would also change. I mean it's pretty impractical if you're in batlle, but for the taste test it would be interesting to taste a cooked version vs. a non cooked one
Also keep in mind that the main dishes are literally ment to be eaten warm. We literally carry all the required equipment for that with us.
I want Ollie's dad to try the cheese. Just to hear what he has to say.
5:15 I'm not kidding but I just got a commercial for "State of Survival" and that somehow feels very appreciate. XD
At this Moment I want to know if Ollie would still refuse a "Mettbrötchen" because it's obviously a lot better (and he eats raw meat in Korea but not in Germany that's discrimination)😂😂
Pretty sure Olly already ate Mettbrötchen in a previous video.
And the person in the restaurant probably also get it from the butcher.
i mean like germany has a whole law for mettbrötchen, the pig has to be killed the same day people eat the mettbrötchen
when my dad was in the bundeswehr as a young man in the 70s he was stationed at the furthest possible point from where he lived and had a 10 hour train ride home for the holidays and they would just give him an mre and send him on his merry way. a couple hours into the journey he got hungry and disappointingly realised that his ravioli where in a tin and they just gave him a random bit of sheet metal to open it. he genuinely did not know what to do with that and ended up having to find someone with a swiss army knife that had a tin opener feature
You know tinned bread is something I regular buy at the supermarket in germany.....
But than again you have to realize that Germany is a nation living on bread, we have hundreds of different types of bread in Germany....
I've never even seen tinned bread I think 🤔 (cake yes, but bread...)
I mean fresh bread is the best...
@@shihalya Ok yeah, I just know Pumpernickel in plastic packages I think 🤔
Pumpernickel is soo good though

U guys are the first RUclipsr that actually made me happy and laugh af 😅😅😅
I am from Germany and I have to say, some of these dishes is really childhood for me xD
Especially the sweet cookies and the Erbseneintopf. They actually taste really good, if it's home cooked. You should try it again with a better recipe:D
But the most maindishes are so far from actual German food xD
I love your videos!
I'm from Germany and the thumbnail looks DISGUSTING 😂😂😂
Yeah me too😂
That's true. I think I also wouldn't eat it. Maybe this is the reason why nobody wants to go to the Bundeswehr 😂😂
"Ich liebe dich NICHT" 😁
but honestly, it was all just Eintopf, right? that's so German... and an easy way of packing a whole meal into one bag.
I really love the content! You guys are hilarious :D! I was in Germany for 3 years with the US military, but never tried a German MRE. Thanks for sharing 🙃
Thx Jolly this video gives me so much joy cant believe it lifted me up while ive been depressed for days hahaha, love this silly jolly channel
Your pronunciation of 'ch' is just hilarious! 😂😉
Greetings from Germany, hope you’re all doing well!
Ollie is actually very talented in languages. His pronunciation for German, Indonesian, and Polish were on point.
Maybe he should pick up one of those additionally to Korean and become fluent in no time 🙌🏻
I dunno, seemed often off to me. And I'm not even expecting much.
Risky Biscuit is my favorite dish, you had it back at Maple Street Biscuit Company, it's biscuits and gravy.
As a native German speaker this is soooo funny! I need more 😂
Shout-out to army people for eating these.
Thank you m8, I've been surviving on those the past 6 months. I genuinely wanna die now.
Vinny oh man bless your heart, and stomach
i can assure you that's not a 'proper' ratio, a lot is missing and usually the "Hartkeks" are nice.
Unfortunately it is. It was sealed...
Junipandrose it might have been one of eliminated ones. Usually you don’t get your hands on German army rations so maybe they were being thrown out anyways.
Me in Germany laughing... 😂 I never thought about ich liebe dich nicht 😂😂
Just today in late October 2022 Just ran across this video. I had surgery a week and a half ago and I’m laughing so hard I’m gonna split an internal stitch I can feel it. I really have to be careful and watching your videos. I need a cheering up that thank you
glad that any time we've been involved in coalition operations the germans weren't really around and we could toss chili mac at the french or UK troopers for RCIRs/ORPs. I wish US mre's of any brand and branch had the biscuits the brits had

The cheese spread is the first item Ollie liked because he takes after his dad!
Ollie's german pronunciation is actually really good, not even compared to other Americans just in general! He even pronounces 'ch' the right way👏🏻
I've been in the german voluntary military service for 15 months until recently and I'm happy I never had to eat that stuff (although I feel like I've missed a once in a lifetime experience). My roommate in my later unit, who had his basic training in another location, had to eat it and he exactly described it the way you reacted.
My experience with German army food: Only eat the cookies and the "ERBSENEINTOPF!".
That pea soup with saussage looks good to me! We Dutch make something similar, typical winter grub, and it should be as firm that a wooden spoon will remain standing straight in there!
