I really feel for the Irish. Saw them lose to Mexico in Orlando in the 94 cup, and the Mexican and Irish fans were both absolute blasts. Hate to see Henry made out as the villian as well. If he could've seen beyond the first three seconds of joy after the goal, I think he'd have called attention to the handball to the ref. He's never struck me as anything but a class player.
His handball caused the French goal that got them through to the World Cup. If Henry handn''t stuck his hand out, the score would have been 1-1. So HE DID stop Ireland getting to the World Cup and he did it deliberately.
Actually pele is wrong here. The handball was definitely deliberate and planned. If you look at the replay again Henry did whatever it took to keep the ball in play and was premeditated. If henry didnt handle the ball like that and even tried to use his feet in the process there is no doubt that the ball would have rolled out of play for a goal kick as the ball was travelling in a high rate of speed.
we totally derserved a replay. ireland isnt a world class side and the fact that we went to paris, played excellent football get a goal and den to lose it all at the end of a 'accidental handball'
Henry hand was at the same level of intention that Maradona's one. Check the slow motion and you will see he hit the ball 2 TIMES!!!! to put it back in the game Pele, obviously have a internal competition with Maradona.
@paksta Lots of ireland fans commented on that. In fact robbie keane even said he didnt know why it was given and thought he missed something with his back to it.
If my memory serves me correctly Fifa had already tried to protect France in the playoffs by making them seeded very late on when they originally said it would be an open draw, and then this. Corruption at its finest.
Whether he planned it or not, Henry did it. It wasn't a "reaction", that's just making excuses for disgraceful cheating and there are no excuses for it. None. We don't "have to forgive them." Why should we? Ireland has missed a World Cup tournament we should have been in and now it's 4 years until the next one. Cheats must never be respected.
He is right about what he said but why does the media always have to bring him up? He played 50 years ago so why always ask him? Sure he is the best player there ever was but still...
Robbie Keane handled the ball3-4 times during that game and the fouls were called each time even though he denied deliberately doing it each time but Ireland cannot complain as long as they have players like Keane constantly diving (which incidently is cheating) and as long as coaches keep telling players to fall in the box as soon as they feel the slightest contact. But I do believe that Henri could have acted like Robbie fowler once did when a penalty was about to be awarded ,
His class is in the past now. What he did before the handball is irrelevant. His reputation and that of the French FA, FIFA and football in general is in tatters. Hope he gets the tough time he deserves at the World Cup in South Africa. Bastard.
@TroyDouglas917 but the point pele was tryna make was before the freekick henry was not thinking when the ball comes ima handball it and set my teammate up , it was not a play that was designed be4 the game , it was jus instinct , and desire 2 win , not the desire 2 be proud of thought, but it was instinct , there aint an excuse for cheating , it was not on purpose he means it was never planned it jus happened
@nakamine1713 I don't see the difference. The match in Paris was the last leg of the tie and essentially a knockout situation too. The pressure was just as great in both matches.
Let's be honest - this is the best thing that could have happened to the Irish. It has given them something to moan about endlessly over recent months, and it will give them something to moan about daily until the World Cup and beyond. They have a sense of brotherhood at being "victims" from this incident, and they love it. Roy Keane was right though - "Get over it".
Henry is a cheat and a liar. Pele was a phenomenal footballer and competitor and he never had to resort to appalling handballs like Henry to win games. He used skill, ever heard of that??? Pele is FIFA's lapdog and that's why he's making disgraceful excuses for Henry the cheat.
@ODAL123 The French team are a struggling, aging team with few ideas. That's why they had to stoop so low as to handle the ball to win. They couldn't handle Ireland. Irish passion and the wonderful, cheerful Irish fans will be missed at the World Cup. Justice was not done.
@TroyDouglas917 i'll give you that, but you must also admit that henry's wasn't nearly as blatant as maradona's...i doubt it was as premeditated as diego tapping it over the keeper's head....i'll also say that it sucks for the irish fans to be knocked out by this, and while i can understand the frustration, until uefa/fifa implements the goal line tech, we'll see this again.
@Skinhead1960s i know, its terrible to see it happen. it makes it even worse when you see how poor france performed at the wc. i have no doubt in my mind that ireland could have done a great job in that world cup compared to a lot of teams, especially france. but sure lets hope we can surpass various teams in our group stages for the next one.
@Gerjabinks sir, does many people remember maradona handball? or any other player dives? no they are mostly remembered as great players. get your facts straight, have a nice day
u can sit here n complain til the end of time..the call was not made,u cant reverse it now...it happens, refs make bad calls in every game,as important as that match can be .. u cnt blame henry,if theirs no whistle, keep playing...anybody in his shoes woulda kept on playing..it juss had to happen that way..whoever said life was fair?...sorry to the irish,in my opinion the match should have been replayed, its a shame FIFA doesnt feel the same way..
Video replays WILL happen. It'll take something like this to have to happen iagain in a major final, perhaps the World Cup to force the governing bodies to come up with something faster than Hawkeye. How many cameras are there for heaven's sake. With the technology around these days it's ridiculous for it not be there. Someone needs to invent a quicker version of Hawkeye for footie, when they do the game will become more fair. I mean how much money does Fifa have!!! I'm truly gutted for Ireland
@rookielegend1990 because maradona is thought by many to be the greatest player of all time, so if the greatest player did that and he won the world cup(fifa didnt take it away from argentina), and not only that but he was the best player active at that time for several years, what is all the fuss about? it was just a qualifier random game, and a unnitentional hand ball, not a big deal! right?
Pele's opinion ! A cheater is a cheater, who cares what Pele says. Maradona in 1986.......Henry in 2009. This is fifa's corruptions ! " $ 5 Million." This is why fifa is against technology.
@MegaEire hey dude, r u listening to yourself? if you take messi back to pele's time messi wouldnt even be a football player because he would be a dwarf (since at that time there werent growth hormons treatments), there is no logic in your premise, get an education and then come up with good insights
So u are saying Henry doesn't have skill? It happened why still make an argue... No doubt Henr is one of the best players , yes he has talent , and yes he did a handball, but it happend , no turning back time
No, you're making excuses for Henry again, blaming the ref and all that crap. The ref didn't see the handball and so didn't think it was an illegal goal. Of course Ireland deserves a rematch or, even better, to have France disqualified from the World Cup so Ireland can take their much-deserved place.
he could have just let go of the ball or even kick it out instead. its nt the handball but the decision to pass itself. dun tell me the cross was accidental...
@GentleBoy17 Henry deliberately handled the ball TWICE - NOT ONCE - TWICE!!! Then he passed the ball to his teammate who scored. It was 1,000% intentional. He did it on purpose and there is no excuse for it, so don't make any for him. End of.
@GentleBoy17 You're saying it's the player's job to do their best TO CHEAT??? You must be joking. That is not the player's job. FIFA have huge banners with "FAIR PLAY" written on it and then they let Henry away with this outrage. What a joke. Football must clean up its image and FIFA must start it off by cleaning up their corrupt organisation.
Another Henry apologist. You CAN argue with Pele actually, he's FIFA's boy and is wined and dined by them around the world. They trot him out occasionally as their mouthpiece and this is a prime example. Henry's handball was "accidental"? Wow, he "accidentally" handled it TWICE! That damn ball keeps getting in the way of Henry's hand! What utter nonsense. He cheated, end of story.
Pele the senile old fool. It was the most obviously intentional handball ever. The way Henrys eyes are on the ball, the way he lifts his hands to the ball and balances the ball on his arm, the way he races away in celebration like he'd scored a brilliant winner when in fact he'd just gotten away with cheating...
@Skinhead1960s it was wrong but it was just instinct and lets face it if the irish did it then we would"nt be complaining. regardless of that it was an awful shame to be put out of the competition in that fashion but i guess thats the name of the game.
Would have been retarded to have a replay, when has there ever been a replay played for a bad decision? I mean come on, there are bad decisions like this all the time - what about man city just winning yesterday when balotelli should have been sent off - that might win them the title because of a bad decision in some people's view but have you heard anyone calling for a replay? No, me neither.
If people really wanna get at FIFA why not start a campaign to boycott FIFA endorsed products.Yeah right!!! I'd like to see how many people would stop buying shirts and especially FIFA 2011 ON XBOX AND PLAYSTATION ETC
@gazz12345a True but not with high stakes that this game had. If it cost's u 3 pints fair enough u have a chance to get back but to be eliminated from entering a tournament at this level is a disgrace. Henry and the refs broke lots of hearts not through a good way but he cheated and they didn't do their job. Come on Ireland
@MathiasBuffalo Henry destroyed his reputation. Great players use skill, if that's not good enough, you accept defeat gracefully. You don't cheat the way Henry did. There is no excuse for that.
@OzzyBlue01 Exactly, the english havnt got over that hand of god incident and look at the population of players you have to choose from and you couldnt even qualify for euro 2008 because of a 'bad pitch' Now thats moaning!!
pele has nothing on messi or ronaldo ,,,,he played football in a time where defenders and structures are nowhere near as organised..if pele was playing today he wud be nowhere near the player he was
He’s the most overrated piece of shit of all time, Messi and Ronaldo do it against world class Defenders mean while pele did it against part time farmers.
@weatherallc05 No, actually, irish people are very sporting and wouldn't support something like that. We like to see people win through skill and we appreciate effort and hard work, not cheating.
@Cmcg1692 so does armenia does it do you deserv as much to be in euro play off now tell me if you are so righteouse then you should demand for a replay for Armenia game what deferenc is there in crime such as this tell me that if you think its fair " then armenia demands replay " so would you do that or not. otherwise your as guilty as henry is to cox " only reson they talk about so much is because he is henry and the other is cox " no one even knows him before this game
@MegaEire If defenders have gotten better in todays game then think about it this way, what If Pele had been born in today's generation he would of only been better think about it idiot. Ronaldo is my favorite but they still had the same advantages/disvantages back then as they do today, defenders obviously have become quicker and better trained but so have the rest of the players so it's not fair to say Pele wasnt that good because in his day defenders were crap ect I hope you realize now...
I don't agree with Pele... I respect him, so much, but cheat is cheat! Sorry for Henry! Sorry for Ireland! Sorry for France! Sorry for Pele in his comment! Sorry for Fifa omission! Sorry... Injust result...!

Romário once famously said: Pelé is a poet when he keeps his mouth shut.
So are you. Andre, you are a poet when you are keeping your mouth shut
It’s great to see Pele on our side
Oh Pele! Henry admitted it!

R.I.P Pele october 23 1940- december 29 2022
What the fuck difference does it make if it was accidental? Pele is speaking out of his ass.
AftComet it wasn’t accidental... Henry admitted it
@chordbasher You said it. Every Keane handball was spotted, funny how Henry's wasn't.
He is right about what he said but why does the media always have to bring him up? He played 50 years ago so why always ask him? Sure he is the best player there ever was but still...
well, we have a saying here in brazil...
pelé is a genius with hes mouth shut.
XD
When it's Henry he is the villain, when it's Maradona they call him "god"

@TroyDouglas917 that was a knockout world cup game...a big difference...
@Skinhead1960s there is a big difference between messi"s handball than henry"s as it regards the wc. i blame the officials not henry.
@nakamine1713 I don't see the difference. The match in Paris was the last leg of the tie and essentially a knockout situation too. The pressure was just as great in both matches.

@Gerjabinks I wouldn't, I'd still think of him for how good he is and was
HD MY FOOKIN ARSE
the news reporter is so biased lol. "footballs image was tarnished" + "asked about that dark night in paris"
come on pele the whole world saw what henry did we need replay
@ODAL123 The French team are a struggling, aging team with few ideas. That's why they had to stoop so low as to handle the ball to win. They couldn't handle Ireland. Irish passion and the wonderful, cheerful Irish fans will be missed at the World Cup. Justice was not done.
who cares what pele thinks, you do realize this man right here has the likes of nakata and butt in his top 100 players EVER RIGHT......

He can’t wait to get out of Ireland
@OzzyBlue01 The English are still moaning about Maradona's handball to this day, was that the best thing that could have happened to your team?
moneys buys your soul!! watch it!!!
So u are saying Henry doesn't have skill?
It happened why still make an argue... No doubt Henr is one of the best players , yes he has talent , and yes he did a handball, but it happend , no turning back time

@hndrxuntilidie It's a question of right or wrong nothing to do with your racist conspiracy theory of "pitting him against his fellow black man." Pele is actually FIFA's lapdog and is wined and dined by them around the world, no wonder he towed the party line by siding with Henry and FIFA.
