Sonic Forces Doesn't Suck (But It's Pretty Dumb)

    There are my general thoughts on Sonic Forces. I wouldn't say it's a full in-depth review, or even necessarily qualitative, but more just focusing on the aspects I have a lot to say about.

    Also, if you somehow glitch the game during the Null Space section and fail to hit the trigger which transports you back to the city, you’ll encounter unused dialogue suggesting that Null Space was originally meant to be much, _much_ bigger.

    Now that you mentioned the random button for that group shot I’m sad we didn’t see that. Can you imagine how hilarious it’d be to see random OCs for all the cutscenes? Even funnier if it was generated right before the scene so it’d be different every time!

      that's what the random button is for, you dont need to be connected to
      the internet to get random characters because the randomize feature is
      already in the game

      I think if they would've added the group shot with everyone's OC's it would have felt like everyone's OC's were teaming up and that would've have been pretty cool honestly.

    Kind of wish SEGA and/or Sonic Team made a contest where you're able to play a specific demo of Forces where the avatar creator gave you a big set of clothing and accessories to choose from.
    You'd then create your OC's and send screenshots to their Twitters or wherever they would be sent.
    They would then pick the top 100 OC's sent to them and put them in that big crowd scene at the end of the game.

      It's possible that they had limited memory to work with so they decided not to make them all unique (spawning two of the same model uses way less memory than two separate models), but they still could have increased the diversity enough to hide it better.
      They could load in, say, eight models and sixteen accessories, then spawn in random combinations with random colors. Changing colors can be done via shaders instead of using a separate texture so it wouldn't use much extra memory.

    3 guys worked on the level design. . 1 worked on lost world tge other 2 have literaly never worked on a sonic game..

      I wish I'd mentioned the level design in the video, I hadn't expected that to be something people to dislike. I legitimately feel the level design is one of the game's main strong points.

      I have to ask why did Sonic Team do that? This is supposed be the big anniversary game competing with other big platforming titles including the fan-made Sonic Mania. I mean if this was done for any old Sonic game it’d be a little more acceptable.

    The rental avatars are my biggest gripe with the game. They're supposed to give you access to different avatars with different weapons so you don't have to edit your own, but they're always some beginner player's avatar - no outfit, the default (and worst) wispon and barely any customisation. It's terrible.

      I've heard this problem isn't as common on the console versions, apparently. Apparently the PC version is really bad at choosing random avatars and just chooses the same handful every time it rerolls the dice.

      my best guess is that it's because the game is new, and a large portion of the players have new avatars. In a few months, I'd expect the Rental Avatars to be a bit more diverse.
      Though I still won't use them, because I was under the impression that the Wispon was supposed to be a choice you commit to when you start the level.

      I felt that would be the case when playing on launch night, but several days into it and I've still only seen a single rental avatar that actually had evidence of having played at least one level. And the fact they're almost always the exact same avatars is itself a concern.
      ... I also had never even THOUGHT about the fact you could use a rental avatar to dual wield wispon powers. That would have made red ring hunting a lot easier; some of them are locked behind the Burst wisp.

      It's because Day 1 had a shitton of issues and that lead to a lot of day 1 players either leaving or refunding the game, which explains why there's so many burst users. -.-
      There should've been a minimum prerequisite for you avatar to be uploaded to the server and used by other players, but nope. The second you made your avatar, everyone else can use it.

    I will agree on the narrative part. If the plot was given a bit more runtime, or Classic was excised (because, honestly, he's the least necessary part of this game) it could have given more time for things like giving more stage time to Null Space. Heck, it wouldn't even be that hard! Just plop some enemies or other obstacles and run like that for a hot minute before Sonic declares he's sick of it.
    Also, the Avatar's plot wants to be Shonen Anime, but there are a lot of tropes missing. (Like everyone guessing that Infinite had *some* relation to the Avatar, but nope. He was just in one scene where he basically calls you a weakling, (I'M NOT WEAK URRRRRAAAAAGH) I feel there should have been *something* there, but there wasn't.)

      I feel like if the Null Space thing was brought up earlier in the game, they could’ve done more with it. For example:
      Instead of having Sonic be trapped on the Death Egg after being defeated, they could’ve trapped him within Null Space.
      The Resistance, wanting to find some way to bring him back, discover that, on the Death Egg, there is a sort of conduit for the Phantom Ruby that allows the user to generate Null Space.
      After finding a way onto the Death Egg, the rookie attempts to destroy the conduit. The machine malfunctions and the Death Egg, along with everything inside, is also sent to Null Space, with everyone being separated from each other.
      After a couple of Solo stages, the Avatar finds Sonic and the two start searching for the others.
      The others, on the other hand, encounter Classic Sonic, who was brought here by the malfunctioning machine messing with dimensions. With this little tidbit, SEGA could start implementing Null Space stages that have small fragments of areas from past games, allowing for a bit more variety so it doesn’t get too bland.
      After a couple of stages for Classic, Modern Sonic and the Avatar, they all meet up at the wreckage of the Death Egg.
      After searching the Death Egg, the 3 find the generator and destroy it, sending everyone back to their universe.
      Then, at the end of the game to match with this, they feature an epilogue where everyone is helping to create a machine that can send Classic Sonic back to his own world, or possibly have that be happening over the rest of the game.
      I think this could’ve been interesting, but I doubt it would be hard to include this AND the rest of the plot without it coming out even more of a rushed mess.

    In my eyes, Sonic Forces was this great idea that fell flat on its face. I found both Classic Sonic and the OC levels to be VERY boring, compared to the high-octane action of Generations and Unleashed's Day stages. Meanwhile, Modern Sonic's levels are much too short and not very challenging. Had Sonic Team focused on Modern Sonic, scrapped the other two characters, and WORKED on their boss battles, then this would've been a much better game. But as it stands, it is squarely mediocre.
    (Also, I could go on for hours about how disappointing the stage design was. While I appreciate Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania for trying something new by bringing back the old, I'd like Sonic Team to design some new stages. I don't want another Green Hill/Chemical Plant reappearance. And while the game has something like 30 stages, almost none of them feel any longer than the bonus stages in Colors and Generations. Get it together, Sonic Team, and innovate again.)

    i think it's worth noting that hardlight was behind the PC port, not sonic team. hardlight made various sonic mobile games.
    that might explain the console-exclusive d-pad support, plus the unpatched version containing early episode shadow music.

    I'm really surprised you didn't mention any of the automation this game had or implied the game probably better than generations, as if it was even close. Forces takes away so much more control from the player compared to every other boost game and the levels are ridiculously short with very few alternative paths to take. So, along with every other task you listed as such, even redoing stages normally just feels like a chore because there's very little for me to do to improve my time and I'm waiting for automatic sections and quick time events to go away. Level design and placement variety my ASS, this is some of the worst level design in a boost game, with the 2-d sections being at a all-time high for awkward platforming. It also doesn't help that there's basically only four different enemies in the entirety of forces, and three of them almost look the same.
    Another gripe I have is that replayability of forces is artificial. S ranks are way too easy to get most of the time, and collectibles do nothing. The game relies on completing the shallow missions you mentioned to unlock fuck tons of mainly cosmetic gear. And besides, I don't find replayability to be an accurate measurement of how fun a game is. Here's a game that does everything forces does better that isn't another sonic game: Donkey King Country Tropical Freeze. It has lots of replayability, one of the reasons' being a time trial mode for each level, and the medals are reasonably hard to get but don't need to unlock anything because it actually feels rewarding just for being an accomplishment. Getting gold medals, feels amazing, and I bet the people who get shiny gold medals( which basically is a secret medal you get by beating the best times from the devs) feel godlike. Getting S ranks is just meh, I just finished a level. I could die in the middle of a level and probably still get an S rank. Also unlike sonic forces, it feels great to play DKCTF levels in your first attempt as with every other repeated attempt. With the exception of secret stages, the levels are cohesively designed for perfecting runs and casual play at the same time. Collectibles in DKCTF unlock concept art and the secret stages I mentioned before, which are new, full levels that require you to make it through tight platforming without checkpoints. Completing these levels also unlocks a secret mini world with 3 full levels that serves as the apropriate climax to the game's end game content. Sonic forces has blocky, gimmicky mini secret levels that focus around avoiding one certain type of hazard and tend to be 2d, which wouldn't be a problem if the 2d parts were at least just as good as the 3D parts. They also usually don't look very good visually compared to the main level counterparts, while DKCTF secret levels share their own theme trope sepreate from the main game and a few of them, including the ones from the secret world, and even manage to have little set pieces that appropriately add spectacle to the otherwise pure, tight platforming levels without being intrusive. set pieces that don't just amount to the character moving on its own via springs, boosters, or the grappling hook while it collects the excessive amount of useless rings placed in the level for you.

      No, thank you for the rant! I never mentioned the automation because I legitimately didn't feel that was in issue; I felt the game did a good job of linking the play sections with flashy automated sections. I don't feel anything is lost in mixing cinematics with gameplay as liberally as the game does. I think there's also a lot less truly "automated" sections than it appears at first glance. Even the infamous double boost sections have enemies scattered around that, while you can just ignore if you only want to finish the level, you need to aim for to maximize your score. I do think they could have been done better, but as-is I wouldn't go so far as to call them cutscenes.

      Hey, thanks for putting up with my essay lol. I called it rant because its a bit raw in describing my thoughts and it seems that these days some people associate longer comments with rage so that's there just in case. I will say that I should have been more clear about more point about auto stuff and qtes. It's not that I have an issue with them inherently, its just that it doesn't really help when the levels, already being quite short as a whole, also tend to have parts, although cool looking, take a fraction of that little bit of time away from me really playing. It's combination of the two that makes it particularly annoying for me. I feel that it needs more substance to balance out the style. Also parts where the game like in Secret 6 reverse blocks puts almost 300 unavoidable rings in an enclosed path you must take rub me the wrong way. The object placement in this game in general often feels weird and excessive to me. That point about score is kinda true though. Sonic forces seems like one of those games that are more fun to complete than to simply finish, collectibles aside, and it's clearly an arcade-like game as well. I've seen people using wispon abilities and mission completion bonuses to go for some REALLY competitive scores, which is interesting because at first glance it seemed to me that time for the most part was going to be the only real factor in score that mattered. I wish the ranks were designed more around that, but then there would be inconsistency in how to get ranks between the avatar and tag-team stages compared to everything else. There'd probably be a lot of confusion since not that many people I've seen play the game actually go for a score attack. Anyway, I've seen from some other comments that you would've wanted to defend the level design since its the biggest problem this game has for a lot of people, and since it's an aspect of the game that I've seen people who like the game only concede rather than justify, I'd love to hear your thoughts about it sometime just to hear a different perspective.       User Name Listen, I agree with what you say, I really do, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF FUCK USE PARAGRAPHS. I mean my god it's so fucking difficult to read a wall of text without losing position, paragraphs help separate out thoughts and gives them a lot more focus.
      Like this right here, just a single line between paragraphs makes them so much more cohesive and easier to read.

      Yes, the console versions allow for simultaneous analog and d-pad play.

    I recommend doing a search for the full song for Null Space on RUclips. Long story short, based on its length and some other things, it seems like it was a cut level... and the music sounds like an endgame Kingdom Hearts song or something, but I digress.

    In the end, all computer programs come down to UI (User Interface)
    This is essential to video games because they're an interactive medium, Sonic Forces does not fail this at a fundamental level but all gameplay lacks a margin of skill, collectibles are there but they might not appeal to everyone.
    You need levels that play around with the game's mechanics, they're not sets for story progression, they're places where a designer messes around with character movement and player intuition and a test of their skill. In Sonic Forces all levels feel like the first level, which is to day they never find that sense of progression through gameplay. I really do believe Sonic Forces is bad, not because it's broken but because it was made for cinematic purposes, and that's not what a game should be.

      Not every game focuses solely on that though, there are even games where the narrative, environments and character interactions are more important than the core gameplay. Take for example the Uncharted series, from a gameplay perspective the game is not cohesive at all, the distance you can jump is not consistent, the accuracy of weapons is not consistent, enemy behavior is not consistent, even the actions you can perform are not consistent, the game is broken up into a lot of set pieces that each has different objectives and sometimes different mechanics. But then, if the mechanics aren't consistent how can a player know what he is supposed to do and what actions he is capable of performing, or if they will even work at all? Well the designers simply tell you what to do, but not outright, they use visual queues, audio queues and camera tricks to persuade the player into the right direction, then it becomes a game of getting the developers' hints right, this works because it makes you feel like you're making the right decisions even if there's little skill involved and you're just being guided through. Does this mean Uncharted is a bad game? No, it simply has a different focus, it focuses on spectacle, narrative and characters, instead of making you develop a certain skill it makes you feel like you are in a movie adventure together with the cast of characters.

      VirgateSpy I agree that there are games where this is acceptable, like Uncharted or other games with good stories and characters. However sonic games have never been famous for good stories. Sonic has succeeded or failed on gameplay alone and the level design should reflect as much.

      I intentionally avoided watching most opinion videos on the game so they wouldn't reflect on my own.
      I'm actually regretting that a bit, though, after watching videos I'm seeing a few common threads I disagree with. I would have done an outright defense of the game's level design if I knew that was an aspect people were criticizing.

      Here's how I prefer to handle it. Play the game blindly and form you own opinion, then see other people's opinions to see how they compare to your own. That's what happened to me with Shadow the Hedgehog many years back. I don't like it when big time reviewers follow the sheep. That's why I like this review a lot. It feels genuine and it doesn't feel like you are agreeing with someone else's negative opinion. Like the amount of people who ends their reviews with asking Sega for another adventure game. I don't mind adventure games, but just because Forces doesn't do much with the boost formula doesn't mean it shouldn't be revisited.

    It’s funny that you mention Null Space being short, because there’s actually more level there; Sonic Team just put the spawn point at the end of it. It even has unused voice clips! It’s just a quick-step section though.

    Finally, I'm not the only optimist, I love and hate this game at the same time. I really like the concept of this game and the graphics are pretty great. I really love how we could create our own character, that was both funny and fantastic! But the stages don't seem that much fun since they're much shorter and kind of slow. They also lack detail, especially in Green Hill. When you compare level design to generations, you can tell that Sonic Team didn't put as much effort in design. And I also don't like the Classic Sonic stages either, its mainly because he doesn't build up momentum when he's running, only we he's a ball. But in the end, the game isn't that bad, but don't say this is the worst sonic game ever people (there have been worse).

    If I were there at the development of sonic forces, I would make it so that for every red ring, you get a specific costume. If you were able to collect ALL red rings in a level, you would get a costume that would be special. So that way, there are rewards for collecting red rings, and possibly backtracking.

    About the null space. The level where sonic escapes null space was apparently supposed to be WAY longer. There are unused parts of the level (and even items that went used in the final battle).

    Honestly, I feel like this game had a lot of potential. While it was just another new edgy philosophical villain type that seems to be trending, the game was almost fun. I don't really think anyone thought it was going to be good, so no one really had their hopes up. It's a game with a lot of ideas, but too many. Maybe instead of focusing on a bunch of mediocre gimmicks, they should've just done one really cool gimmick.
    BUT, I have to address the music. This video game has some of the best music that I've heard in a long time. It was all done by professional musicians, and it sounds amazing. I would spend the money that I spent on this game on just the soundtrack.

    I want to say with the entire null dimension thingy, I think it may have something to do with the prototype gem your OC has or something? If the same kind could send you there the same kind could get you out. Also the null dimension blocks are following the OC after, which may have some relation to that as well though I'm unsure.
    Even then I watched someone play the game, and I am loosely using watched in this case as background noise.

      Console versions of the game support D-pad and analog at the same time, but PC has to remap controls if they want to switch between one or the other.

    In a nutshell, the plot in forces goes like this: Sonic is trapped... Two levels after he escapes. Eggman is winning, the team stops that. Sonic and OC's are trapped in null space, THEY EXIT IN THE SAME LEVEL.
    I don't know because Everytime something interesting happens they end the same thing after some levels and that sucks

      Basically I just feel like his jump animation looks more like a 3D model that's had its rotation speed upped, rather than an actual real world spinning object. Compare to modern Sonic's spinning while in the air, which looks much cooler, much more natural, and even more faithful to the Genesis sprites.

Especially because there was a cut part of null space where you actually play and you get some extra dialog and guess what, with some mods you can backtrack to where the trigger for this dialog exists! Because all they did was start you ahead of the trigger, and made it to where you run automatically so you can't trigger the dialog! Just wanted to put that out there.

    i think null space is actually a cut stage maybe even with a cut boss fight, mostly because there is hidden audio of sonic speaking about the places emptiness and how he was never alone. There are also an early screenshots with infinite in an environment heavily resembling null space in game. Not to mention the name of the stage is called null space despite you spending about 12 seconds actually in null space.

    For the avatars during that cutscene, though could have done all that, but you can tell by the quality that for some reason that scene is a totally prerendered cutscene, which is really jarring that the cutscene immediately after has your OC in it and looks way better.

I agree on the story and classic Sonic physics being trash, but I like how you even managed to mention a good amount positives over the more plentiful minor nitpicks, some which I did NOT expect. The level design being one of them. You even had your own good reasons too! Man, maybe I should try Forces again.

    The score should actually be 3/3 because this game is awesome! It's definetley my favorite Sonic game followed by Sonic Boom and Sonic 06. Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic Mania, and Sonic Generations are all TRASH compared to this game!

    Is it just me but Forces gets way too much hate than it deserves. I think Forces is an average Sonic game. One thing that annoys me is that people who like games like Colors, Generations are shitting on this game, especially those who like Colors.
    Colors and Forces in terms of level design and control play very similarly and its a fact. Forces have better gameplay than Colors, as well as content, replayability, and story. Colors fans seriously have no right to shit on this game. Both games are riddled with 2D. Forces have much much better 2D sections than Colors. The 2D sections in Colors are so blocky, slow and linear. It looks like a generic platformer. Forces balance speed, more difficulty, and platforming into the 2D sections. Forces tried to do more 3D than Colors but they were very automated. Colors didn't really have 3D sections at all but they were just a bit better(because of the drift) but this doesn't mean Colors is better.
    As for Generations. Generations is lackluster and shallow. The game is incredibly short. Yes the gameplay is better but Generations is lacking in overall package/content. The story is shit and the content is really fucking bad too. It's simply just a game that has okay gameplay with nothing else to look at. This is 2017!! Games have evolved. Having just gameplay won't cut it. Forces at least has more content, like the OC and the amount of shit you can unlock for it, as well a much better story.
    Hell! They have the same fucking director as Colours. The hate from these fans just gotta stop!

      I like all three games. When it comes to how they play I can understand the short levels thing is a problem but it is not a bad game. I dont know why they hate so much. Colors and generations may not have had much content after the story was done but that wasn't what I loved. I loved how the levels were so fun you would want to play them over again. I feel the same with forces. My only complaint is the couple levels that are too short (oc water slide level) the auto gameplay( again if it was longer it wouldn't be a problem) and what is my real issue is that the game was too easy. The first two I can overlook asking as the game is fun and cool but there was no challenge. I remember dying at bosses in colors and generations, that was not something that could easily happen in forces. Forces is an ok and fun game to pass the time and I don't regret getting it. Just next game when I choose hard mode Pls actually make it feel like it became more difficult.

      tbh i think a lot of the hate comes from how fucking hyped this game was. like christ we in sonic fandom thought it was gonna be one of the best modern sonic games in a long time, reinvigorate the series, include all these old bosses (especially chaos) and new concepts and basically bring sonic back to its former glory-plus the story had a LOT going for it, since it seemed to mirror the original satam cartoon and archie comics. the game ended up being rushed out to meet demand (a problem sega/sonic team has had for a LOOOOONG time) and i think folks hate on it so much because it had so much potential. personally, i don't hate it for what it is, but i am disappointed in some of its more rushed and lacking aspects. and i'll be honest-based on the game's reception and the complete foil reception of sonic mania the same year, i don't think it's impossible that modern sonic is going to be coming to an end soon, especially if the movie ends up flopping. sonic team might just return to nostalgia bait for a while.
