  • On this weeks video we are doing a Branch Test. I am going to do the fit up and weld it all out. We will go over how to properly clean, tack and fit as well as the various welding techniques (dragging, whipping) I used to do the root, fills and cap.

Looks like he did an extra pass at the ears before starting his first fills. After the hot pass, I usually take a 1/8th rod and stack a bead on the ears before switching to a 5/32 and starting my 2 bead fill passes from the bottom up.

Thank you for doing this video. I had to learn pipe on my own because the pipe world is full of guys that think their shit dont stink, drive stupid looking trucks and have ego problems. You my man are HUMBLE and willing to help people. SOOO refreshing seeing a true man who is still young, willing to help and talented. You will be a success.

I have kept up with every single video you have posted and buddy you are a great welder but an even better instructor. I have a suggestion for your next video. These are questions I see a lot of new upcoming welders like myself have. Heres a few.
    1. How to feather tacks on TIG to get a good tie in and whats a good technique. [Sometimes when I tie in to a tack on my root, my bead profile is a lot lower than the rest.]
    2. How to make repairs on a weld, specifically the root. [ whats the best method to cutting up a weld that has already been capped to make a repair on the root]
    3. How to stop or minimize warpage and drawing on a pipe weld. What are the best tips you have on not putting a dog leg on a pipe.
    4. O-lets how to fit up and weld.
    5. This is the last one I can think of. How to fill up a pipe faster with tig. [ I personally feel that the time it takes me from root to cap is double what it should. How do I speed up the process of TIG from hot pass to cap] .
Thanks for reading this bud. Keep on burning brother!

fabricator welder for 50+ yrs. a little trick that i used was to fire up the torch and burn all the lacquer finish off where all your layout lines are going to be,,, makes for a FINE line of soapstone not a wide mark,,, you can only be as accurate as your layout and definitely learn to bevel as you go. Makes for a way faster clean up.

Good job man! While you are showing 1104 tips.... you should do a demonstration of 3/16” diameter rod large fast caps like we do on mainline. The small rods may get you thru a test, but anyone wanting to retain a job on a main line needs to know speed. Some jobs even require 3/16” diameter for the root pass also. That is a whole other level of skill!
But keep up the great work. Too many good welders are retiring and we need a lot of help from people who actually now their stuff.

That is really interesting. I have never seen pipe getting fitted and welded that big. I have fit and cut pipe up to a little over 2". Luckily, our CNC plasma table will cut up to 1/2" wall 6"diameter pipe. so you don't have to mark and hand cut it My son is a fitter. He hates dealing with the small pipe and is always in a bad mood when they send him upstairs at work and he has to deal with 24" and smaller pipe. Their big CNC pipe cutter will cut about 2" wall pipe up 14 feet or so in diameter.

    GREAT job!
Only critique I would offer,is ,when whippin, don't go too long on your arc length- you can see things start getting white and the electrode wants to start getting erratic, slinging Google's all over the place. If they stick it parent matl. have to be ground off. Grind scars take away the beauty of final work.
    EXCELLENT JOB!
