- ACURA mdx oil change DIY
Had to work on my wife's MDX so I decided to record it for the DIY guys who refuse to pay for something that can be done at home for cheap.
If you're a noob at oil changes I'd suggest to watch the entire video. If you're need just info on how to get certain things done but know how to wrench overall, click the time links to skip to the nitty gritty.
4:33 oil pan bolt location
5:34 oil filter location
10:22 oil filler location and dipstick
13:54 how to reset maintenance notice
Here's the stuff I bought:
Mobil 1 0w-20 synthetic pack of 6 amzn.to/2tCdtm7
Honda Oil filters with washer qty 1 amzn.to/2sCPbag
you'll need an oil collector of sorts
funnel
nitrile or rubber gloves
rags or paper towels
17mm socket+rachet or wrench
oil filter wrench or like me...monkey wrench!*** fyi monkey wrench is fine for removal but use a proper tool when tightening. that's all I had in hand during the recording***

Hey next time try using a zip lock 7mil plastic bag to catch all the oil from the filter, I do this whenever I change the oil on my rlx and my wife's mdx.
Great idea! 👍🙏
mynsx6 This is the best suggestion ever. Where have you been for all these years.
Get some car ramps in order to lift the vehicle's front end - that makes access to the drain plug and oil filter much easier. Get an oil filter end cap tool to remove the filter - a pipe wrench can distort or possibly damage the oil filter metal casing. I make a plastic catch funnel for the filter removal - split a heavy plastic bag in half and position the closed end under the filter and tape the opposite end into a circular funnel shape to allow the oil to drain into your catch pan. That eliminates the oil draining onto the frame and the subsequent clean-up.The filter calls for a 3/4 turn after it contacts the base.
Thanks for the tips
And make sure the oil filter end cap tool is made for Hondas - the generics sold in many discount car parts places slip. Honda filters are a mm or two different.
very good video well explained thanks now I will be able to change the oil myself greetings from Stockton California
I'm from Stockton too. Weston ranch 🤙
Fold a paper plate under the filter to funnel oil into a container instead of spilling it over the A frame. I keep a few in my garage for this reason.
The video was tremendously helpful for me.
Next time you don’t need to use a wrench to tighten the oil filter. Hand tight is good enough, you don’t want to strip the treads.
I may be wrong on this but I thought the reason for hand tight was to not deform the rubber O-ring gasket on the filter itself and cause a leak.
@@j31355a Or because you need a miracle to remove it the next time!
New filters are made by fram and castrol gtx is better for direct injected engines because it evaporates and breaks down at a lower rate than any other oil
please use a 5-7 mil zip lock bag over the filter and it is much less messy.
I want to ask a question, if I changed the oil and it only been 3k miles but the oil I changed it’s for 5k mils and my oil % in my MDX is down to 40%...is that mean I have to change the oil or just resetting it again? I did reset it when I changed the oil and now it’s show 40%...
Good question.
The computer now adjust not just with miles but driving style or "severity" so the average is 5k but could change. At 40% it sounds about right since you have approximately 2000 miles left. You reset when you do your oil change.
I found this faq from an acura dealer that hopefully explains... www.curryacura.com/service/acura-maintenance-minder-faqs/
Only hand tighten oil filter or you can split the oil filter gasket by over tightening and blow the engine. Follow instructions on filter.
6 liters seems a bit much. I have a 2013 Acura MDX 3.7L V6 and it calls for 4.5 liters.... is it ok to put the whole 5 liters?
You're not going to empty the last bottle and need to use the dipstick to ensure you haven't overfilled or underfilled
Hey thumb up. Out of curiosity are you having any annoying issues with your MDX at all? I'm thinking about getting one but I'm a Toyota guy. I have a 2017 Honda Pilot Touring with 11,000 miles on it and it's making a loose engine noise on me. You know when you go over bumps or turn off the engine it's the last shakes that makes the noise. Anything with the MDX at all? Thanks
Hi,
Well your Pilot is a similar platform to the MDX. I'm not sure if your Touring has a 9 speed but it's awful and I wouldn't recommend it. We dumped the MDX for a RX350 and my wife couldn't be happier. I'm happy because it's safer.
Honestly I'd stick with Toyota or consider a Lexus. Build quality is better. It's not perfect but better.
It might be the panel under the driver side dashboard. It makes an annoying raddle if it's not put in place properly.
Nice vid.
What's your savings doing it yourself ?
And thanks for sharing
I am up due for a timing belt replacement and plugs .. they quoted me at $1800 plus taxes and fees so probably around $ 2k ouch . But with a 100k it this Suv still feels great wonder if I should wait longer never really replaced a timing belt under 125k miles
Thoughts ?
5 qts Mobil 1 full synthetic oil and Mobil 1 filter were $22 total (with a $15 Mobil 1 rebate). You're looking at $100+ at any shop for a full synthetic change (previous owner was paying $140).
Good video bro. Easy follow. Appreciate it!
thanks for watching
You only put oil in the filter if it's diesel only diesel...four cylinders 6 cylinders you can just slap that filter back on that's it put a little bit of oil around the rain that's it and what's the filter number.. you can use jack stands they work perfectly fine oil filter should be hand tightdon't use nothing to tighten it because you might can get it off next time you do a oil change.. but cool video
You lube the oil filter ring so it doesnt stick to the engine block next time you take it off. I dont think it increases sealing power.
You're correct. Not more sealing power but proper seal when turning tight so it doesn't leak.
also you're also correct on easier removal.
thanks for chiming in.
I couldn’t get the nut/bolt for the oil change :( any tricks there?
So you're saying it's stuck? Im assuming you're using a rachet. If you have a pipe stick it in the handle so you have an extension and more leverage. That's a hack if you don't have a breaker bar. Seems like it's overtightened.
@@RobDaman yeah - seems its stuck - couldn't move it at all - looks like i will have to take to the dealership (which I dont like) - disappointed that i couldn't do it myself - will have to return all the stuff i bought for oil change :(
@@mytwocents522 you could always save it for the next one
thanks you so much
Just tighten the oil filter with hand.
fumoto quick valve for oil changes FX 106 series..no more touching the oil and 4mil plastic bags for the oil filter.
fumoto is a nice mod and the plastic bag idea is great too! thanks for comment.
How about 5-30
Bad, never used a wrench on a filler when installing!!! Never...
Good video Thanks
It's not 6 quart it's actually 5.7 quart
You are correct but they don't sell a 5.7 quart container 😂.
You'll still use the dipstick as the best gauge 👍
Thanks for keeping me in check 😎
that extra .3 quart goes in the filter anyway
5.7 quarts total when using a new filter. NOT 6 QUARTS
You pretend that you aren’t noob????
Oil filter must be tightened only by hand...
Hi
I appreciate the comment.
I've never claimed to be a professional but I'm going to disagree about hand tightening only.
I'm sure I can dig up where they get the specs but I'm sure we can find Acura/Honda documentation somewhere.
Thanks again for watching my video and posting.
The filter instructions are 3/4 turn after the filter contacts the base. A tool can be used to achieve this turn radius, if necessary.
