The bird in hand was on Lowerhouse Gate. Closed in the 1920s. Local consensus thinks Brook Row was on the corner of lowerhouse lane adjacent to Wellesley street and diagonally opposite the canteen.

This is such a sad story. In the US, alcohol or any substance is not a mitigating factor for guilt. It can’t be used to try to get the person out of prison or DP. Maybe it can in other states but not in my state. I think it can be brought up in punishment phase but I don’t even know about that in my state. Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Mississippi….they tend to say “guilty….ok, well that’s all we need to know” and then sentence you to what a jury recommended. Some states like IL would probably plead that same charge down to some MUCH lesser charge and give you a few years. The USA can be weird. Fry for it in one state and get 5 years in another.
Great video! You guys have the most awesome cemeteries. Gosh I wanna visit there someday

Unfortunately alcohol has ruined many good men and women, and I have actually known people who have gotten so terribly drunk that they actually can't remember anything they did. This is so sad that poor lady had already had a rough time of it, and how her poor children much have suffered. Thank you for another interesting video!

Great video. Just a tip for future videos about criminal cases. When someone is charged or was in the past also , charged with murder they appear first in the magistrates court. The only function of the court at that stage is to be satisfied there is a case to answer. They are then committed as it was then, it’s called sent now, to the assizes for trial or plea. It’s the crown court now. There is no judgement or finding of guilt at the magistrates court phase

In today's society the murder charge would have been dropped and Robert would have been charged with manslaughter while the balance of his mind was disturbed or diminished responsability? The judge would have charged him with manslaughter to be sent to prison for the rest of his life without the possability of parole! Many people in today's society would have been given this slightly lesser sentence! It is easy to understand how the demon drink can affect the mind! Interesting story today. I am wading through every story slowly.

You ask an interesting question later in the video of whether the fact he could not remember would be enough to stop an execution. First YY thank god we don’t have executions anymore. But legally the answer to your question is yes. To be guilty of murder it’s not simply the killing that matters. It has to be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that you intended to kill or to cause grievous bodily harm. If he says he couldn’t remember. Now of course at that time he was not allowed to give evidence in his own defence. Today the question would be asked why he couldn’t remember. If it was alcohol or drugs then he may have been too intoxicated to form the required intent. That is a question for the jury after hearing all the evidence. If he could not remember due to insanity or an epileptic fit then he could be not guilty by reason of insanity or automatism. I hope this helps

Another great story. My opinion he got what was coming to him. Today liberals would most likely try to get him life in imprisonment.

Many thanks Dave! We have another one we are about to release, first on our website as a podcast and then a video follow up. We feel that we have also narrowed down where the events of the story took place. It's a brutal one and it has taken us some time to research as we really wanted to locate one specific place (which, as I say, we think we now have). Hopefully the video will be out this coming weekend!

I think there was a pub in Haslingden call the bird in hand too.
My nanas dad had a pub in Haslingden.
The red lion on Blackburn Road.
And if you look over the wall you can still see the footings. I don't know if you can find any more information on this?
    My nana Dorothy rowe.
    Maiden name Rothwell.

    • @DaysofHorror
      @DaysofHorror  8 месяцев назад +1

You wont believe this, but we actually walked along Blackburn Road just last night for a walk and we stopped to have a look at the old ruins down below that wall! When I got home, I check on some old OS maps and saw that there was a pub called the Red Lion. It was just opposite the lane that runs up towards the church.
We have also spoken about doing a video, Haslingden Then and Now, and walking through the town detailing the now disappeared buildings, but we arent sure if that would be interesting for people, especially those not local to the area.
There are loads of foundations of that area, the Red Lion and the houses that were on that same stretch of road and I casually mentioned last night that we should look into doing a video on them. Also, we do have an old photo of an abandoned Bird in Hand.

@@jonboypatton I've got another interview lined up tonight at 7pm, but Vickie is talking about going for a walk after that, so I will get on over to Haslingden and take some photos of the ruins. I'll get them onto the community page later all being well. But we can definately look into a video of the forgotten and now disappeared buildings.
