Boss SY-300 More Than A Guitar Synth

- The SY300 Guitar Synth can do so much more than it is known for.
In this video we look at the conventional effects in its arsenal.
These include many different distortions and overdrives, reverbs, delays, choruses, flangers, phasers, tremolo, univibe, rotary speaker, chopper and frequency isolator.
The SY-300 is generally known for its analog synth sounds but it can do straight electric guitar effects and it can make some quite mild synth sounds when combined with the the more conventional effects in the right way.
All the best
Paul
been looking for exactly this kind of demo, thanks a lot!
I purchased mine maybe almost a year ago and I just finally opened it up for the first time! Love it, cool sounds and even great distortion sounds. I think this will change my life and thanks for sharing this.
Cool. Great to know I helped you out.
Cheers.
nice vid :) I'm quite happy with my SY300, never stop finding new sounds :)
I mainly use mine for varying guitar tones if anything. I like making patches that layer multiple distortions by selecting the input signal for 2 oscillators, and either run then parallel and split into stereo or mix and match the eq for them to make a big mono patch.
Thanks Paul for showing that kind of detail. The SY could be used for post production of dry takes for example. Good work.
Seems to be capable of quite a variety of sounds.
I liked it 1st time....had to come back half an hour later and play it again (and subscribe)
Yep, I’m looking 2 buy if I feel I’ll use it ... definitely more on the “Wonderful” side of “Weird & Wonderful” ... thx
Handy machine, Paul!
Yea, A very versatile piece of gear.
I like the subtle sounds that mix a more traditional sound with milder synth sounds.
The crazy synth sounds are fun to play around with though.
LOL, just because you said to like the damn video, I had to give it a like
Cool. Nice to know you watched it to the end!
Thanks.
So, did you store that loop in the pedal to recall even after powering off?
Was that "You don't want me any more" by steel breeze?
I would love to hear it with a human voice going through it. It does sound good in this video
Can it do any kind of clean piano sounds?
Hey paul, how is this pedal going? Are you still using it?
Steel Breeze?
Nice video! Does it do a nylon string guitar? Or any piano sounds? I was just curious.
No, you'll have to use a Boss GR55 for that kind of shit.
Anybody out there that can replace my broken CASIO PG 380? I miss the totally usable sounds. This BOSS SY 300 wouldn't do as good on my regular gigs where legit instrument sounds pay the bills! Gimme horns, accordions, strings, percussion, basses, synths and especially Hammond organ! This unit is a toy for gearheads?
Rick Roche not only gearheads, a lot of younger audiences are into straight electronic sounds, and for a band without a keyboard player, these can be very useful.
Yes. A useful tool for MUSICIANS to use! Creative minds will find a whole bunch of new sounds here. Thanks for replying!
Very cool. Can I ask some questions? Does it have a Hollow analog like pad, any kind of electric piano, an acoustic guitar sound or a aHammond Organ sound? Thanx. I am considering picking one up.
It really just makes analog sounds.
No piano or sampled stuff.
What speaker or amp are you playing through?
Solid state PA amp with two celestion vintage 30s in a sealed cab.
MIDI out?
Hi Paul. Question. Can you trigger sounds on your DAW, like Logic Pr0, with Sy300? Say if i just wanna use my gtr as a controller to drive patches on my Logic, or even oher plug ins with sounds ... Thanx
Yes you can, it has MIDI I/O
No. It is not converting audio to midi. The midi I/O is for sending and receiving bank changes only. You need the GR55 for controlling midi.
DJ PANE Thanks a lot. Good to know.
does it's midi out send note data to other synths
"?
No, it doesn´t tranlsate what you play to midi
Anyone played a synth through it?
good question also I would like to hear a voice through it
seems
Hi Paul, I like boss gt100 but i don't like the size, can you tell me if sy300 works like gt100? Thanks ^^
The GT-100 would be far more user friendly for general effects.
While the SY-300 can do much of what the GT-100 can and in some cases much more, I would still prefer the GT-100 for gigging, rehearsals and general practice.
Paul Graham Thanks bro, please can you upload more videos about sy300? I'm thinking buying one and using it for practice and playing live using Overdrive and Distortion ^^ Thanks
The Sy300 seems to have a quite variety of distortions and flanger, chorus, phaser, but the sound sucks. Really if you are going to play regular songs with your band using only those effects, better buy a Digitech RP55, or a Zoom G1, or a zoom 505ii. Because sy300 is not for that, If there is a distortion, phaser or whatever in that pedal, it is to mix them with synth sounds
much easier and quicker to adjust using the pc.
I've had a SY-300 for over 2 years now. And to be honest, though it does have effects built in, they're not particularly good. Honestly, they're pretty poor really.
I dont think anybody buys that thing for the distortion, chorus, flanger, etc. They are the least important, though it is good to know that it has them. Now, it is quite expensive, in my country, for that price I can buy a gt 1000 approximately, A GT 1000 for Jesus Christ.
Yeah I just want it for the synth stuff mainly. Digital distortion especially ussually never sounds good. Especially boss's digital distortions. Still nice they added them in there though. I might use the delay or chorus ever once in a while. The routing options of the Sy 300 are also very useful
