The 90's were the absolute peak of video games in every aspect. The revolution/evolution that the 5th Gen gaming brought was mind blowing and there will be nothing like that ever again.

I can recall the local chip chop having Double Dragon, and the Arcade floor in Trocadero, Piccadilly Circus in the late 80s, which was like heaven on earth. Friends had consoles and computers. I got my Amiga in 88 and loved it. I gave up gaming in 96, when the N64 came out. I realised I'd done nothing for months but play Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 for months on end! I took up clubbing full-time. Been enjoying a Retrostick of late!

1994 was thirty years ago! Oh the music, games, films etc. It really was a golden age. I mourn for those times some days.
The monthly wait for sega power magazine, half an hour of gaming T.V. a week, going to Leeds to buy the latest single you have anticipated. And maybe renting a game and a VHS from the video shop. It's too overwhelming nowadays!
We had just enough to be content and not a spoil of media to overindulge in.

I remember wanting our family to get Sky TV to watch Games World with Big Boy Barry, I'd only occasionally see it at my aunties house, and I can remember wanting us to get a TV with teletext so that I could read Digitiser, that was only at weekends at nan and grandads that I could read up on that. There used to be a bloke come around every week in a sooty van that did videos and game rentals, I can remember playing Dune 2 on the Megadrive with my mate, and it would be left on pause all day while we went to school so we didn't loose progress. It still makes me laugh now when I think back and can remember his dad though that PAL games were 2 player ones that you could play with your pal!

I'm in the same boat as you (I'm 41) and game'd hard in the 90s too. I always thought our generation was the first actual gaming generation and as a result we've grown up along side with gaming.
    I mean, think about it...
In the 80s, we were little kids and that's when gaming blew up and went mainstream. The games back then was targeted to little kids like us (Super Mario Bros, Alex Kid, Pacman etc). As the 90s rolled in, we turned into teenagers and gaming grew up too with the likes of the Playstation and the more mature games it brought.
Like I said, we didn't just grow up with gaming but along side it.

Imagine a 23 year who had never played consoles, only the Amiga.. who had £1000 to spend every month, imported a 3DO, PS1, N64, Neo Geo CD, Saturn, Dreamcast and PS2 (late 99). Not only did I get great gaming experiences, but I got a social network of friends around it, went to gaming shows like ECTS, met Miyamoto, Bruce Lee's daughter among other devs. We were all single, all excited about the next game didn't matter what it was. We had BBQ's and David Cox of Konami come round with Goeman 64, Symphony of the night and Silent hill before it was even released in Japan. There is nothing today that compares to those times. It was amazing and If I could go back today I would. It wasn't just consoles, we did Trocadero in London, Sega World, Namco Wonderpark.. we did it all.. Its right what they say, the journey is better than the destination, now we have everything nothing feels special anymore. I think it was Bad influence where at the end there were lots of tips and cheats in the credits that whizzed past very quickly and they said "Start your VHS recorder now" so you could pause or slow mo it on playback. One time in 1999 someone wrote into teletext and asked "Why is the dreamcast so small?", and the reply was "because it didn't need to be any bigger". I got several letters published in Edge magazine between 1995-1998. Great times. Its a shame games were so expensive back then, everyone had 1 or 2 games, not 954 games like we have now.

I agree. We'd get the Amiga magazine back in the 90s with your free floppy demo disc attached and I remember playing them on summer weekends. Nearly finished the video - thank you for jogging my memory even more than I thought I already had to date about these times. Those magazines, they were magical when I think back on how it felt to look at them. So authoritative, and trying to imagine what the game would be like from those tiny screen shots. And I would keep them around and they would still retain their wonder for a long time after - even after we had a SNES, I still would look at, for example, an advertisement for Abadox on the NES in one of my older magazines and wonder what the heck it would be like to play that wacky looking game... knowing someone somewhere was playing these mysterious games - there was a feeling of prestige thinking about what it would be like to own any one of these amazing games, knowing you were likely only going to see a certain selection in your brief experiences with the rental options, and what you'd afford to buy and what your friends would have.
I love the way you describe these kinds of feelings in your video!

Fantastic vid Gem! Great to see your love of the 90s!
For me the 90s feels like a decade of 2 halves, almost like there are 2 decades in 1. From 1990-1995 it feels very much like as you describe. I was very much a Nintendo boy but also played Sega MegaDrive with friends. SF2 is may favourite game of all time, heck I even dressed as Ryu for Halloween fancy dress party. I always remember my parents and I went to my friends house after party for drinks while me and my friend went to her room to play SF2 on the Mega Drive,
1996-1999 feels like a completely different era. My friends and I had moved to PC gaming and the big change was...The Internet. Quake (or Quakeworld) really defined that part of the decade especially with online multiplayer. We initially used services like Kali and BT Wireplay as well as direct dial modem for games of C&C Red Alert, accidentally misdialled and some confused a pensioner by modem playing weird sounds to them( I phoned and apologised). FPS games were the main things (Quake, HL, Counter-Strike, etc). However other games like X-Wing vs Tie Fighter were awesome. Hardware was awesome like 3Dfx Voodoo graphics and MS Sidewinder controllers were fantastic, I loved the Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro.
I was even a content creator with my website on Geocities, with the great title of "Andrew's Star Trek Site." Those were the days 🙂

40 years old.....my god. I remeber when I was 40 🤣 interestingly considering I have a good chunk of 80s memories as well everything from the early 90s to the early 00s are my core memories. Especially for gaming. God do I miss £1 pints and 5er enrys .......I mean cheap crisps not enrys forget that last part. The 90s was the pinnacle transitional period for videogames when they went from 2d sprite based to 3d polygonal. I had a few letters heavily edited and published in superplay magazine. But I couldn't for the life of me tell you what particular issues they showed up in

Gaming was so much more exciting in the 90's and I don't really say that in the sense of just being an older gamer. It just really was, the internet was not so prevalent, obtaining a game was more difficult than a download, word of mouth, rumors, the whole atmosphere. I do think we probably are in the golden age of gaming as a whole, but what made games special then was really that there just were not a ton coming out every day, week, month, they meant more then than now.

My favourite series of GamesMaster was season 2 when they were on the "oil rig" so I was a bit disappointed to find out recently that host Dominic Diamond really hated doing season 2, Mostly because of the red jacket he had to wear. "Red Dwarf" fans have probably noticed they filmed a few episodes at the same location.

The 90's was probably the best time to be a teenager. There was plenty of new technology coming out, loads of new and exciting types of music and people still actually went outside to meet up with friends. One could go out and not have to worry about parents tracking your every move with an app or calling you every 5 minutes to remind you to be home on time. Best of all it was possible to go out and do silly things and make mistakes without going viral to millions of people!

Well I hope you you were reading Super Play and I don't think the mainstream media ever did justice to the real 90s experiences of Zelda on the SNES and N64. Gaming was not given the credibility it deserved but it was growing fast

Goodness, yes! I phoned the Nintendo helpline for Zelda: A Link to the Past, as a frustrated 11 year old gamer, sweating because I didn't have my parents permission (would've said a firm "no") - I think it was £1 a minute! 😮 😂

I thought all you guys across the pond were still playing with the ole Speccy. Actually didn't think too much about the games there, maybe just about the "European" style platformers you guys were probably playing. These were usually lacking in quality control AND generally had this same kinda feeling and design. Like some kinda liquid dropping on you for damage, always with the damn drops. 🤬 That Amiga style and computer never really made it here in the US
