  • Today we're driving the BMW iX1 eDrive20 to the coast of Norfolk, UK where we might catch some of the local fauna. This 550km return trip over 2 days is a perfect set-up for testing the car in real life. It's a rare thing to spend more than 8h in a car over just a week-end, so if that can happen without much fuss, then that means that this car can handle a lot of real-life driving situations. And it should! Because it's not a small city car, nor is it a cheap one for that matter.
Along the way, we check out efficiency on the motorway, with both tailwind on the inbound journey and headwind on the way back. We get a sense of the car refinement too. Is the eDrive 20 powerful enough? Does it accelerate well? How does it feel in the cabin, using the infotainment and the screens on a day to day basis? We cover all of this in here.

Thanks for the video. Considering the temperature and partly wet roads this is a good result for a SUV design.

Hi, cool video. How much more range would you say the edrive20 has over the xdrive30? Does the edrive20 have enough power?

Thanks. From looking at official figures of the different versions and comparing with what we achieved with this car, i would say the range increase of edrive20 may be just c10-20 miles as I suppose the X4 drive disconnects motors when not needed. Smaller wheel sizes will help on range as well if you re happy to go with eg the 17inch eDrive20 version. And as mentioned in the video I think the eDrive20 has plenty enough power, in fact more than I'd want when it comes to parking smoothly.

Voice recognition was cracking 😂 Classic. Google automotive seems to work ok though on other EVs. The screens look very nice.

    230 Wh/km must be a nightmare for an Ioniq-owner....

That's indeed about a third more than we saw under poor conditions (heavy rain) on a similar southbound trip a month later with the Ioniq.

I hate the touchscreens and think they should be forbidden, for the same reason that you are not allowed your mobile phone while driving. They are by far more distractive then buttons and create dangerous situations in traffic. In my case it is even worse: the touch screens do not work for me. I need to tick the screen up to 5 times before it gets what I want. Horrible

Agree in general. Here with the handful of buttons it s not the worst.

If only bmw could build an ev with it's own generator so no need to do the dreaded public charging thing, no anxiety...
i guess it must be impossible or they would have done it.

If by this you mean generating electricity from burning fossil fuels onboard that's what bmw did nearly ten years ago with the i3 range extender. It defeats the purpose of limiting carbon emissions once the vehicle is produced though. And there are a number of countries where there is little to dread from public EV charging infra now.

@@evdabbler not really i have never needed the rex but it is there if i do, yes some countries do have better public charging , the uk is not one of them, we dont repair things here and remember we have a large population with little room for huge charging stations which would need to be many times larger than petrol stations....
by the way it is cheap to charge at home expensive to public charge... i could go on and on, also the rex is good for the battery..
