I moved to New York City 16 years ago and my sweetest memories are all in the East Village... Egg creams, Odessa, Veselka, Opaline, Tompkins Square Park... I'm finishing grad school in Toronto and every time I talk about how much I miss New York, I hear "I'll trade spots with you" from New Yorkers (jokingly, I hope) or how lucky I am to be in Canada. This video nearly brought me to tears - it made me want a big bowl of borscht, a cheap slice, a black n white... It reminded me that New York is my heart, that I'd rather be there in the worst of times than anywhere else in the best of times. Thanks to you, Karla, and James!

I love your latest videos showing what NYC is like now coming out of the pandemic! My husband and I flew to NYC for the day last Saturday - visited MOMA at opening FOR FREE right now with no crowds! We had a nice late lunch enjoying the outdoor dining, and then flew home that evening. (Full disclosure - he works for an airline, so we are taking advantage to the light loads.) We hope to do it again in a couple of weeks and explore a neighborhood or two before going home. Would love to know how Arthur Ave is fairing through this.

LOVED this video and all of the little old school mom ‘n pops which are in danger if people continue to support Starbucks and Applebee’s (don’t even want to get started on my disdain for chain restaurants!) I have several of James and Karla’s books, as I LOVE anything retro NYC. I hope you will continue to showcase and support these gems! Also, don’t forget about Montes (ask for Chef Pietro) on MacDougal St. A whole video on old school Italian joints would be amazing and so much fun. Another one is John’s of 12th St. And Bamontes in Brooklyn.

I remember being 4 years old we grew up on 117 street in East Harlem. My father worked downtown by the Brooklyn bridge and on my birthday he would always get me the fruits and nuts cake from Vinieros but he wouldn’t tell me which one he got me until it was time to sing and take pictures but he would always bring the whole family a box of Cannolies when he would come home early on my birthday but since I grew up in a Mexican household when I first saw them I thought the were some type of candy taco dorado. I gotta go support them soon just to say thank you

I live in NYC but not near the East Village, so have not spent as much time there like I used to - and then came the pandemic! When I did meet friends from out of town, I would take them for a "V&V" - a long lunch at Veselka's and then dessert at Veniero's (stopping off at Cobblestones shop in between!). It is difficult seeing these beloved places struggling today! Veselka is most famous for their "Christmas Borsht" which is available in December through the Ukrainian Christmas holiday in early January. 😋 😋 I have had the Christmas Borsht every year for many years (as I am a NYer I have made it my duty to get there!). I am not sure what I will do this coming holiday season (December 2020) as I am isolating at home to protect my family.

Thanks for sharing these institutions! Though at just 50 years old, it’s much younger than these, Famous Cozy Soup ‘n’ Burger is a fantastic diner also at risk of closing. I’ve talked to the owner quite a bit lately, they’re really struggling. The burgers are awesome and easily 2 meals!

In the 1970s I used to stop by Vaselka nearly every day after school before heading around the corner on St. Marks to my dad's moving company, University Movers (not around anymore) for a chocolate egg cream soda. My mom still lives in the LES and we go there every time we go to visit.

@@dadcation I visit SD every year. Unfortunately, their Little Italy does not have a full scale real Italian bakery (selling pastries, cookies, cakes, etc) which is odd. They have a few cafes with a small selection of desserts. They do have more restaurants than NYC's Little Italy. Bencotto is excellent and my choice.

@@larrycj4382 You're absolutely right Larry, I've been to San Diego's Little Italy several times and no luck finding a full scale Italian bakery but the restaurants are pretty good and many. There's one authentic Italian store on India Street called Mona Lisa and it's pretty good but a little pricey. Thanks for the info Larry.
