Yikes! I’ve flown into KEED a couple of times and that fuel pump is extra special. You have to insert the nozzle into a thin slot inside the holding port in order to activate the pump. It works, but I spent 20 minutes figuring out the magic touch to get that sucker to work.
I love that you included your weather briefing with graphics. It really helps to understand what you're talking about as well as seeing as you go along your flight. Great work!
Was your employer going to comp your airline ticket (and did they instead comp the price of your flight)? If so, that would be even more incentive to fly GA since you don't have to worry about fuel prices
When I’m flying in thin cloud layers like that right at freezing levels, I get block altitudes. This way I can sit on top of the clouds and slightly climb out if need be.
Great point 👍🏻 The block altitude was one of a number of possibilities. Given the thin clouds, you could have asked for 12,000 if capable (the hemispheric "rule" doesn't present any more of a problem than a block). The MEA was 11 but Center's MIA could have been lower so you could have asked. Then there's VFR On Top (which doesn't have to literally be "on top" :) I've also been offered lower if able to maintain my own obstacle and terrain clearance. Not all might have worked but it's nice to have a big toolbox!
ABQ is definitely convenient being about 10 minutes to Netflix or downtown - another option for GA is Double Eagle II on the west side of town- about 15-20 minutes to the studios.
Great to have a panel (and Foreflight) that keeps you so well informed and ahead of the flight. Beats getting that ATC call with surprise deviations which can be stressful. Thanks for the video. KAPF
Another really good video. I like your continuous risk evaluation and monitoring. I’ve been able to take my plane a couple times for work when Commercial Air just didn’t work out and it always makes me smile!!
I am learning about life and it’s exciting to see this video. Can’t have a single tire of a car to take me to hospital and man is in his plane to work. 🤩. This is beautiful to see. I feel excited about life again.
Such a great video Eric. Nice job on this flight. Would love to see a video on how to fly the LA basin navigating air space and ATC . Such fun watching your masterful work!
Sometimes GA wins!! I diverted 3 hours out of my way when going to Oshkosh to pick up my boyfriend in St Louis when Southwest cancelled his flight and couldn't get him on another for 4 days. 3 extra hours for me versus 4 days waiting on southwest. And for Christmas, it was going to cost the two of us $1200 in airline tickets to go visit family. Well in the GlaStar, it's a $300 7 hour trip each way.
We live in crazy times. I envy a person with a plane and the skill to fly themselves and loved ones out of harms way if need be. It's a good insurance plan especially for someone that lives in a huge urban area.
Fun fact: there's a statue of Glenn Frey standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. They put it up shortly after after his death. There's also a flat bed Ford parked there.
Just stumbled onto your channel. Your story and mine are very similar. I started in 1992... had some life changes that took me away from it... collage, married, kids, so on. Kids are older, and I got a divorce, and said.... I want to fly again ! LOL. I also had almost everything, other than my long x-country in the 90's. Now I'm 2 flights back into it... and it feels great, and it's all coming back. Thanks for sharing your adventures. (I would patrion, but flying went from $27hr in the 90's to $150 hr. LOL)
Get a twin 310 next. Night flying is great and smooooth. Vegas Is the only city in color. Cites under cloud layers. I love the night but only with 2 motors in the mountains
Love the video as always but I don't understand why you put yourself into that IMC situation, especially in freezing temps. You could have gone above and cancel our go underneath and cancel. Or am I missing something? Sorry not trying to be that backseat pilot but just trying to understand why you were so keen on flying IFR even it seemed to make it less safe. Looking forward to part 2!
Going above and cancelling IFR is a great way to run into a problem. If the layer is at 11k, you’ll be 12k plus to be clear. You need supplemental oxygen at 12.5 for any length greater than 30 min, and from his other vids we know he doesn’t have onboard O2. Chasing underneath VFR can funnel you into trouble. He had multiple planned outs if he ever got at risk. His choice gave him the most options and he had plenty of contingencies.
Going above would mean transiting through a guaranteed freezing level in clouds above 11k amd into the icing airmet. I did not have O2 on board to go over 12.5. Could go underneath but rather not with an earlier mountain obscuration airmet and unfamiliar area. Would have been a little scud running but probably fine. I felt the IMC flight was the safest first choice with the most options based in the weather amd forecast.
@@AnonyMous-jf4lc you got some points but under the clouds it looked very clear and once the terrain raises too much he could have still picked up the IFR and climb. Don't say one way is right and the other wrong but I would have gone underneath the clouds personally.
I only flew into Albuquerque once. It was in my Saratoga, it was a night landing, mid-winter, hard IFR. Just for added sportiness, there was fresh snow on the runway. However, I cheated flaming death one more time.

Love your videos. I am a VFX Supervisor out of Chicago. Trying to get my wife on board with owning a plane. What are typical airport parking costs when keeping your plane overnight somewhere?
If you’re visiting a small airport it can be $5-10 a night. The FBOs at some of the midsize airports are around $20/night and the bigger ones like a class B might be $45 or so. It varies greatly.
Just can't stop thinking about that scene of Thanos going "fine.... I'll do it myself" after reading the title. Awesome video as usual :D
