    My tinnitus started after my right ear was extremely clogged due to Eustachian tube dysfunction brought on by a severe allergy attack. I forcefully popped my ear by sticking the tip of my pinky finger into my ear canal, and popping it out quickly and violently.
    I heard a very loud crackling sound followed by a high pitched ringing that hasn’t gone away in 7 months. After seeing an ENT and an Audiologist, the diagnosis was that I had caused myself nerve damage.
    Please don’t EVER try to pop your ears using your finger or any other object.

    I have had tinnitus since 1999 when a SSGT hand grenade instructor was careless and detonated one very close to the class. Just behind him was a 4ft cinderblock wall (he tossed it over his shoulder while talking to look cool). Later we heard he was dropped a rank to SGT which is a lot of pay so, he learned a lesson. That was the start of my tinnitus and like a dummy I've since been to over 23 rock concerts over the years always forgetting ear plugs so if I had any advice to give it would be to take some ear plugs to any live music show!

    Good video. Personally, I have found a very strong connection between not just stress and tinnitus, but mental state as well (seems you are on to this too.) For example, just by watching these types of videos, it will slowly get louder (only temporarily.) Being in good physical shape and maximizing my nutrition (key is to reduce all internal inflammation) also seems to helps. Vit. D, Magnesium and Tumeric are my standard "go to" supplements. Wearing ear plugs, even on good days also seems to help. Perhaps mentally it gives us a sense of control. You do have to take care of it though so it does not get worse.
    When you eventually get to a decent place (less stress), one trick is to convince yourself that you actually LOVE IT! That's right. Ask for more ringing. I am sincere when I say that I have convinced myself that I truly enjoy having a built in stress meter (you called it a thermometer.) It's actually kind of a superpower not everyone has!
    I can also "tune-in" and sometimes hear frequencies/sounds that others sitting next to me clearly cannot (I ask.) It is very interesting. If I then turn my head slightly it's like changing a radio station- and that sound is 100% gone. If I turn it back, I can hear it again. It doesn't happen all the time, and it doesn't last more than a minute or two, but it is very interesting. Not sure if anyone else has experienced this (comments???) I think there will be some breakthroughs in the next decade...if enough $ is dedicated to the needed research.
    Over time (years for me now), I have learned to live with it just fine. It was stressful at first but that is normal. When you get older, you will unfortunately get many other issues that far eclipse this. If a gentle ringing is the worst of your problems, you are doing pretty good! When you are younger, you think your life is over- it's not.
    What is fascinating is that some days now, it has left the room- gone. Not to worry though, it will and does reappear. It takes some intermission breaks! I also use ear plugs and ear muffs every morning when I run my nutribullet (need that morning fresh DIY almond milk!) and also when running the vacuum.
    One thing is for sure, despite some real luck and/or success in managing it, if I slip e.g., play my music too loud and/or get stressed, it will very quickly remind me. Those flare up states can be brutal and can last weeks so I try to avoid them. I also actually "play" music and had to give up the idea of ever playing in a band again- and also playing loud which is (was) the most fun. It's a shame too because after practicing for years, I was finally getting pretty decent. I bought headphones so I can play and listen on my one good ear (low volume.) It can definitely seem unfair, but that is life. You have to deal with the hand you are given...but it's all good. Things can always be worse.
    Keep these great and informative videos coming- Cheers!

      @@blackmarketarmy Hi John. You'll be fine the 1st few months is probably the hardest cause it's the most stressful but you really do kind of get used to it after a while. If you don't mind me asking how did you get it?

    • @UTAH100
      @UTAH100 2 года назад +2

      @@blackmarketarmy If your condition originated from an infection it could also potentially just go away so there is hope. If it was from prolonged noise exposure then probably not.
      Imagine a very tiny spark or tiny flame deep within a dry wood pile. Right now you're tinnitus is that small spark. Your stress in reaction to the spark is analogous to pouring gasoline onto that small fire. It's making it much worse. The great news is as you learn how to breathe correctly, learn about mindfulness, nutrition and exercise these things can take you on a journey that will improve your health 5 fold in the future. Ironically I am far healthier to day because I've been sick in the past. What don't kill you will usually make you stronger.

    • @blackmarketarmy
      @blackmarketarmy 2 года назад +1

      @@UTAH100 thank you for replying, I had cancer not too long ago and ever since then my body does not deal with stress well and it has been stressed ever since I had a few stressful days last week and one night I realized I couldn't hear well then the next day I had ringing. I went to the dr and he put me on drops said it might be a build up of wax but I've done those all week now and its done nothing. It was so loud last night I barely slept. This is so difficult.

    • @UTAH100
      @UTAH100 2 года назад +4

      @@blackmarketarmy Ok- got it. Here is the deal. First, I think you are going to be just fine. You had a trauma- mental and physical. The ringing is a trigger and vice versa- pouring fuel on your spark of anxiety. It's very normal. For your cancer you probably took numerous drugs that could also be contributing factors which might be good as over time you might be rid of them.
      To be very clear, I am not a doctor and this is not advice of any kind. I am simply sharing my experiences with you. Again, I know that you are going to come out of this stronger. One day you could easily wake up with no ringing- it happens all the time. The first couple of months will be telling.
      In the meantime, one thing I have done successfully during acute times is a simple mental hack. Focus hard on your left small toe. Does it make a sound? Does it hurt? If not, convince yourself you are on the right track (because you are.) To a great extent, pain starts and ends in with our thoughts. As you focus only on your left small toe, breathe correctly (watch videos) 10-30 times. It is very destressing and good for you as is walking every day. Before doing all this, I have a nice tall glass of water with a pinch of pink sea salt (helps the body to retain vital fluid.) Only a small pinch- stirring is not necessary and never white table salt. I do not have high blood pressure.
      YOU WILL BE FINE AND COME OUT OF THIS STRONGER. Review your progress ONE MONTH AT A TIME- not day by day. You will get better over time. It's hard for ALL OF US in the beginning- then you really do get use to it or it goes away. Buy some MACK's natural color ear plugs. I use them even on good days. It gives you a sense of control and really helps me. I also use ear muffs if I vacuum or run my nutri-bullet. It all helps. Keep repeating the mantra- "I love this. I have a built in "stress" detector." That is really what it is. When you are happy, on vacation, with friends or working hard, you won't even notice the noise. It is very much a mental game- one you can win.
      Bedtime, buying a white noise machine is very helpful. I don't wear ear plugs at night. Too quit is not what you want. Mild, distracting sounds are very soothing...water running, beach sounds, birds, nature, rain, etc.

    Thanks a lot for this video and for your pragmatic point of view. I've had tinnitus for a long time (maybe 15-20 years) but it was manageable. I was a professionnal drummer (and an anxious guy, I must admit ^^) and I had to stop because of that. My tinnitus almost disappeared since 2010 but it increased a lot for one year now, but only in my left ear.
    The strangest thing is that it's always the same cycle: one day very loud and one or two days much quieter. I just can't explain this situation.

The audiologist checked both ears and my hearing is fine. I noticed that if I don't get enough sleep or stress the sound of it gets louder. I sometimes feel pressure when it gets louder or when I look down and look up right away it cause a little dizzines . These are my symptoms nothing else. Pls help.

    Since January this year, I've had costochondritis on my chest. Basically an inflammation/ strain in my chest cartilage.
    I have been having tinnitus symptoms since May 1 this year, so just about a month now.
    I initially attributed it to stress/ anxiety, but I'm wondering now if it's linked to the inflammation in my chest.

    For me I just don't know why it occured. I'll never know for sure. But in some ways it has helped me. Before I would be very sensitive to any slight noise in the night. I would use earplugs all the time. Now because of the tinnitus, I quite like some external noise as a distraction so it's helped me reduce the stress on that part. Recently it's got worse but I'm going through a very emotional / stressful period of life. Even TV can't drown it out. As someone else put on their comment, it could be worse! Could be dying from cancer or something. I'm keen to hear people's experiences whether reducing stress makes it lessen? Is there hope?

      Stress, anxious thoughts, lack of sleep, eating poorly, all make tinnitus worse for me. Some days it got so loud but lately I have had days of complete quiet! Blew my mind! Have been meditating daily, writing in a journal to allow myself to ‘feel’ the emotions rising without judgement. They then go away on their own. Also doing slow box breathing 4-4-4-4. Breathe IN for 4, HOLD for 4, OUT for 4, HOLD for 4. The noise level went from a high pitched squeal to silence in a matter of minutes. Neuroplastic brain as the Doc said. Retraining to let go, breathe more slowly, eat well, exercise and be in gratitude all helping a lot! Even got rid of years of migraines. For me believing it is possible to heal was the first step. We all have the capacity for change, growth and feeling better! Enjoy the journey!

    My tinnitus is a constant, high pitched sound. It doesn't seem to be affected by stress a lot. Some people have tinnitus that can fluctuate a lot, going for mild to really loud.
    I have genetic hearing loss, but my tinnitus was trigered by stress, it's not noise induced, or drug induced.
    Stress/depression can kill some part of the brain. Some researchers believe there is a part in the brain that should filter unnecessary signals, such as tinnitus. This part in the brain can be destroyed by stress. I think it's what happened to me.
    How do you know that the limbic system is involved in the loudness of tinnitus ? I have heard it so many times. Do you know if it was proved by brain imaging ?

    Im not convinced anymore, after a year of researching tinnitus, in an effort to make mine lessen, that stress or anxiety is the cause. First, I have little stress, much less than the average stressed out American Im sure. My life is in amazing order, ease, contentment, etc., with no worries concerning money, occupation, relationships, family, etc. Im retired in fact, with money to burn and zero debt. Sure, I have stress dreams (but not very severe) from the past occasionally. Who doesn’t? It’s certain millions of people much more stressed than me do not have tinnitus, and others with little stress in their lives like me with tinnitus. I believe it is a physical cause triggered by my hearing loss years ago, plus my age, 63. Its just how the brain works sometimes. When you get older, various parts start wearing out or do not operate correctly, obviously. I got floaters in my eyes too. Again, age is the culprit. Practicing stress reduction helps habituate psychologically.

    Mr Ben Thompson , do you believe in your opinion that one day maybe in the next decade they will develop a cure for hearing loss. If so surely once hair cell regeneration is possible than a cure for tinnitus will and could be possible. Bw I believe science will soon one day heal our hearing as simple as a broken bone. 🙏🏼

Going to find myself again and keep myself safe and healthy. Currently live in the uk but now have plans to relocate to Canada as a truck driver doing something I’ve loved to do for so long but will wear hearing protection if needed. God bless your be in my prayers 📿

    I think there are two main things to take away from this video. He says that a) there is no cure for tinnitus, and b) it's all about "managing" your response to it. If you have long term tinnitus please don't believe anyone who tries to tell you they have a cure, because they don't. So, managing your response to it is the thing to focus on, which basically means training your brain to be less aware of it. How to do this will vary from person to person, but I believe that it's possible for the vast majority of us who suffer from this condition. I've had it for years, but it suddenly got worse in August of 2020 (thanks, 2020), so I had to go through a whole process of acceptance and it took months of terrible sleep before I started being able to tune out the noise in my head. Now, even on days or evenings when the noise appears to be loud enough to keep me from doing anything but stressing out, I'm able to let other thoughts or physical sensations come to the fore, and I rarely lose sleep over it.

    Is tinnitus a symptom of something more serious? You asked that question and answered by saying "probably not". In my humble opinion I would differ with you. After a decade of research on this topic I believe that tinnitus is an alarm bell that goes off to warn you of some internal problem or a loss of balance in your health that may or may not be very serious. As you would agree it's a profoundly complex problem, and few have any idea of how to deal with it or how to regain silence again. After suffering with this problem for over 10 years I have finally found answers on how to calm the system enough to experience silence again. It's a process that can take a long time, but silence can be achieved. Any talk of habituation is unnecessary.

      Can you help me what I must do for tinnitus

    • @cognoscenticycles4351

      @@zarazara5109 Hi. As you can well imagine, tinnitus is an extremely complex problem in the human body. Tinnitus can be caused by a myriad of different reasons. Tinnitus can result from stress, dietary deficiencies, toxins in the body, whiplash, neck injuries of all types, loud noise, sleep deprivation, ear infections, impacted ear wax, grinding your teeth, jaw problems, drug reactions from over 500 drugs and a long lost of other reasons. So treating tinnitus can be very challenging, but not impossible. I am in the middle of writing a book on the subject of tinnitus and I hope to be finished in a few months. In dealing with your own tinnitus, I would start by getting a very good nights sleep, ( 9 hours per night, 7 days a week) as well as doing some form of exercise every day that includes stretching, which should include your neck and shoulder muscles. Be gentle with this area of the body, but make sure you include it in your daily exercise regime. Avoid consuming any type of stimulants, which includes alcohol, sugar, and caffeine. Move to a healthy diet of organic foods only and limit your daily carbohydrate consumption. Be careful with your portion control. Unnecessary spiking of your insulin can be bad for your tinnitus. Avoid any kind of stressful situations. Stress causes the hormone cortisol to spike and this can sustain the ringing in your ears chronically. Pursue any type of activity that you find very calming, be that yoga, meditation or even a long walk. Start with these lifestyle changes and see if your tinnitus starts to diminish. Above all, keep a positive attitude and believe that you can heal yourself! Be patient, because the body moves slowly sometimes in the healing process.

      It’s more likely the reason for this tinnitus is in the neck. Tight neck muscles. My tinnitus gone after 2years, but I sometimes have it when I move my neck or if I sit with bad posture for too long.

      @@rsaint3222 I tried everything from steroid shots to craniosacral therapy to psychotherapy and exercises. Nothing really helped)) But in the end I've learned that relaxation is the key if not for complete cure but for the improvement. Relaxation of the muscles. Especially jaw, shoulders, neck, face. And lots of sleep - it's difficult with T, but over time with a little bit of background noise, herbs (ashwaganda, hops, Mg) I got rid of insomnia and T started to improve. Also got my vit D level to normal (it was really low). Did guided meditation (with free app) - it helped relax muscles. And pilates from time to time (I found interesting fact that doing exercises for lower part of the body can help with neck pain, so I did ex. like hip bridge from pilates). So to say it short - muscle relaxation of all kinds that I liked - massage, meditation ect (body, face, jaw, shoulders), herbs like ashwaganda and hemp, sometimes melatonin, sleep, reduce stress (stopped watching news and horrors ect) and pilates exercises (basic) for lower part of the body and arms. I also had hyperacusis and it also gone, after around a year. So, don't panic if T is not gone after a month or a year, there's still a chance it will go away later. Just focus on improving your quality of life and sleep. Sorry for mistakes - english is not my first language.
