  • Description:
The HMCS Yukon, a Canadian warship intentionally sunk as an artificial reef, rests approximately 1.8 miles offshore from Mission Bay in San Diego. This fascinating wreck site sits at a depth of around 105 feet, offering an exciting diving experience for wreck enthusiasts.
Divers can expect varying visibility during the dive, typically in around 15' but on a good day, conditions can be much clearer, revealing the wreck's intriguing features. The water temperature hovers around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and an occasional current adds to the thrill of the dive.
Deck 4 of the HMCS Yukon holds captivating marine life. Strawberry sea anemones decorate the wreck, creating a colorful spectacle for divers. Marine inhabitants such as yellowtail and sand bass add life and vibrancy to the surroundings.
The dive commences at a large cutout located in the stern of the ship, offering an entry point into the Yukon. As divers venture deeper into the wreck, they will eventually reach the engine room where we exit the ship.
Exploring deck 4 of the HMCS Yukon is a remarkable adventure, combining the thrill of wreck diving with the allure of marine life. The wreck's historical significance and the diverse underwater environment make it a must-visit site for experienced divers seeking a captivating and memorable underwater journey.

I am not an expert or a dive professional. I don't know all the hazards that exist for a particular dive. I create these videos for informational purposes only and you should not use them your sole source of information on this subject. Some of my information may be incorrect. Conditions can change from hour to hour and what's safe at the beginning of your dive may be hazardous when you finish. Talk to lifeguards, use other resources and most importantly, dive within your level of training and your skills/abilities. Just because a dive looks easy doesn't mean it is, or that its even safe. People have lost their lives diving here so make sure diving within your limits.

Awesome video! I’ve dove the Yukon several times in the early 2000’s and always loved it. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Ya, He wears a DUI drysuit with the sock style feet so he has to wear a boot over the sock and went with the stylish Converse instead of the ones made for drysuits.
My drysuit has an integrated boot which is nice, but when it wears out I have to have it replaces so his should last longer.

I noticed you are not running a line for this video. What is your reason for not running a line? I'm a SoCal diver as well and I'm looking to get into wreck penetration this winter. I've only dove the Yukon once and it was on the outside and we mostly stayed around the guns.

Johnathan Schmitt addresses this question at 59:20 of his interview on Facebook. The interview is a little long so If you don't have time to watch the whole thing just skip to 59:20 and watch from there.
