Great Lakes Shipwreck Diving the Daniel J. Morrell Engine Room

- The Daniel J. Morrell was over 600 feet long and a giant steel Great Lakes Freighter. On November 29th 1966 it broke in half in a violent storm with icy cold waves over 25 feet tall. Only one man out of the crew of 29 survived the shipwreck after 37 horrific hours on a raft surrounded by 3 fellow crewmen that had already died. The stern motored another 5 miles closer to shore before it finally sank beneath the surface into 215 feet of water. No one from the stern survived and this eerie video shows areas inside the pristine engine room where the men would have worked. Haunting reminders that a job on the Great Lakes was a dangerous one. I've been diving the shipwreck since 2016 and have close to two dozen dives on the stern section documenting different areas including the engine room. Inside you see catwalks working your way down to the engine, ladders, a telegraph, General Alarm that would have run as the ship was sinking. A workbench with tools and above it a light bulb still intact alog with glass jars full of nuts and bolts. I have seen this area change over the years. It could be rust and that objects are just falling or it could be divers. If you do penetrate this wreck please be careful and mindful of your fin kicks and bubbles knowing things down. Once it's broken it can't be replaced. Anytime a shipwreck penetration is done in 37f/3c water temps at a depth of 208ft / 62m we put a lot of planning into it. We are using closed circuit rebreathers for safety and to not stir up sediment. We have safety gas, safety divers and overhead training. I collaborated with my buddy Jeff Lindsay on this dive. We were both shooting video to put tis sequence together. Enjoy! To license footage contact Becky@LiquidProductions.com / www.LiquidProductions.com
The overhead nuts and bolts jars are definitely from an older generation,my grandfather had them above his head in his work shop.
Insane too that some of them don't even appear to have water in them.
An amazing wreck. I was 6 when this happened and remember the new reporting of it. The fact that the stern section traveled 5 miles further under power after the ship broke in half is amazing!
That’s an amazing and tragic story.
The visibility looks amazing. Shipwreck dives always make me appreciate the past and how unforgiving life on the water can be.
Such a great reminder to touch nothing while diving.
Dive safe!
Truly incredible footage. I was in awe of the engine room. So incredibly sad so many men lost their lives during this wreck. Rip.
Becky makes the best diving videos out there!
Thank you!
14 men rode that stern section for 5 nautical miles after bow broke off and sank infront of them... what horror they must have endured before the end.
That is a beautiful video . Rest in peace to the crew
Respect! This is some serious diving!
That was excellent. That engine room was in amazing shape.
Another amazing video - as always !!
Thank you so much!
Your videos are spectacular Becky
My great grandfather, Arthur Fargo was on this ship, super interesting to see!
Wow, wonderful to see this. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
I have a lot of newly edited video to share soon!
Great quality footage and impressive camera handling skills
Thanks, it's taken a lot of years of experience to get to this point.
Great video Becky! It was Megtastic :)
You are literally amazing!
This wreck is my goal.... Thank you
I hope you see her with your own eyes someday!
Beautiful...cheers
100% awesomeness!!
Outstanding video photography!!
Excellent footage thank you
Pretty amazing
amazing
How is the wreck laid out? I know it broke in half but how did it land?
How many people died on this ship?
I have it in the description but 28 men died. Only one survived. Sad story
Yeah that’s really sad
@@BeckyKaganSchott Ambient sound of the dive equipment minus music if possible really pull the people watching into the actual diving experience in further...at least it works that way for me...Becky please do some with all the sounds in the water...pretty please?
@@wirelessone2986 I'm glad you enjoyed the sounds in the beginning. There are no sounds in the water in the Great Lakes. Maybe a freighter going by. I'm on a rebreather and there are no fish, no currents nothing. It's nothingness. The only sound you'll hear is my camera arms clinking or a tank banging against a clip. You may hear my breathing but thats all. No water sounds. I like ambient sound too but i think most viewers will not watch that. It would m ake my life easier and i wouldn't have to search for music ha
@@BeckyKaganSchott when I listen to other vids put out by divers with no music I hear the respirate through the equipment
No se porque muchos piensan en como sacar el titanic que se hundió hace más de 100 años y está muy débil, pero no piensan en sacar del agua estos barcos que están en mejor calidad y mejor conservados 😐
Great footage thx for sharing this.
glad you enjoyed it
These ships are like swords if they brake youre doomed but they had a lot of battles to make them remarkable
