😊I remember this wreck so vividly. I was 16 and we lived on the water in Amherstburg Ontario. It meant a lot to us because boys in the community worked on the lakers, so we were always watching the ships and the water. Of course it was in all the papers, with the story of the lone survivor, Dennis Hale. I remember some details from the news articles. He was berthed on the aft section of the ship and was woken up by the alarm, grabbed a life jacket and went on deck. He could see the front half of the ship, broken off, disappearing into the storm. He and some other crewmen got into a raft in the snowstorm, but the stern of the ship was still running, and would appear out of the storm from time to time still lit up, threatening to run them over. One by one the raft mates died until there were just 2 of them left. He said they talked ( they must have shouted over the storm) to each other about their families and life growing up. They were trying to stay awake. But finally the other man said he wasn’t going to make it and asked Dennis to say goodbye to his family for him. After that man died, Dennis pulled the dead bodies over him for warmth, and passed out in the freezing raft. There were reports in the paper on his recovery after rescue. He stopped talking about the sinking, and it was the first time I’d heard of Survivor Guilt. He didn’t know why he should be alive with his crew mates gone. My father took us to the seaman’s chapel in Detroit to pray for the crew. I guess dad was trying to help us process the loss. Clearly, it made a big impression.

Thank you for telling more of the story. I hope Dennis was able to be at peace with his survival.

Fellow Wisconsinite here THANK YOU for taking the time to document and show this gorgeous wreck. I cannot believe how overlooked this wreck is with such a fascinating story. What good shape she is still in as well. Just curious do you ever plan on seeing the Fitzgerald or is it kinda “off limits” to divers? Also do you sell any of your photography of the morrell?

    • @BeckyKaganSchott

Thank you so much for your nice comment. I do sell photography on my website here photos.liquidproductions.com/ Look for the Daniel J. Morrell gallery. You may enjoy looking through other shipwrecks as well! I can't dive the Fitzgerald ...no one can because it is off limits. It is also very deep. Over 500ft which can be done but in lake Superior thats a very serious dive. I'd prefer a submersible =D

Were you able to meet the sole survivor Dennis Hale? If he hadn't passed a few years ago, he would have loved this video.

@@wirelessone2986 Good point. But, I think he would have liked the fact that the video exists though, so that his friends are remembered. Even if he would pass on viewing it. That's the impression I got when I met him in the mid 2000s.

Let's re-edit this. Second song on soundtrack, pretty good. First one, not so good. Needs more mysterious-sounding coming up to the ship. Also: MORE AMBIENT SOUNDS!

@@lfreeman2511 I apologize, i do get a lot of comments about music and some nasty ones. I didn't think yo uwere trying to be rude but i put my own money, time and work into these and edit myself just to share with the public. I wish i had the budget to hire an editor to do all of this for me and search for music. Usually finding music that fits takes me longer than actually doing the dive, the deco and the editing.
