  • Imagery from the wreck of the Daniel J. Morrell's stern and Galley. The stern sits in 215ft of water off of Port Austin Michigan in Lake Huron. The water temp is typically 38f degrees on the bottom preserving these wrecks like time capsules in the cold fresh water. Signs in the galley can still be read and dishes still in the cabinets. The Morrell was just over 600 feet long and sank in November 1966 when it was torn in half in violent seas. The Freighter's stern motored another 5 miles before sinking. Great video. Wish it was 3 hours long. I think I would rather dive a wreck like the Morell than spend a couple hours on a short space flight. And I've followed spaceflight from the beginning. I would be ecstatic to go up there. But, these ships are more than just wrecks. The stories they could tell. The people and their lives who lived and worked them. Have a close friend who sailed the freighters in the 70's and 80's. I love the stories he tells.

You understand exactly how many of us feel as well. The powerful stories and human stories connect us to these shipwrecks. I got chills reading about Dennis Hales survival story and then every time i dive the Morrell it's like visiting a time capsule.

@@BeckyKaganSchott And you have seen them. Wish I had learned SCUBA back in the 70's. Thankfully people like you take great pictures for us to see. Thank you!

Great video! Those ceiling panels look tenuous to say the least! So many little winkles on the hull too!

No crew were on the ship when she sank. All but one did die though due to hypothermia mainly.
