This was a dive filmed in March. It was a clear beautiful day for diving. I had never dove off the beach before and wanted to give it a try. It was a wonderful experience. Very cold and that made the dives somewhat unpleasant. I used a 6 mil wetsuit and hood.
There wasn't much wildlife along the way but I managed to capture what I could in a little over an hour worth of dive time.
I used a GoPro Hero 5 with an underwater housing for it. I had no issues shooting with it at all.
Love la jolla . I cant wait to scuba near the kelp fields and see cool stuff one summer

If you have not already done so, come north to the Monterey/Carmel area, where we have great shore and boat dives. The Pinnacles, Monterey break water, Hopkins, Monastery Beach, Pt. Lobos, etc. Bring your 7 mil or dry suit.

Thanks for the video, I never realized the La Jolla region is So barren compared to tropical waters. Are there kelp forests with more diversity in La Jolla tho?
Yes there are actually. About a quarter mile south of here the waters are teeming with kelp, sea grass, and outcropping of rocks filled with wildlife. This is right off the beach area

Wayyy too many seals for comfort, you’re right. There are garibaldi still all over! I think they’re hiding more because the seals may target them.

No Halibut? LaJolla is famous for big Halibut near the canyon dropoff all the way in to 15' FSW

@@bigacefilms Trust me. I have dived there a lot. The lifeguards are trained in Fish and Game regulations. If you are going to play their game, learn the rules. If you cheat (Especially There) you will pay with your dive gear, money and freedom. The big halibut are right in front of the main lifeguard tower out to about 30 feet deep right before the big drop off down the canyon wall. I used to count 10 keepers during my decompression stops all the way in to a shallow 15 feet deep. They like to come in thick in the spring time right around now. You’ve been warned!
How long do you normally get out of one tank?
So it kinda depends how deep I go. Typically in La Jolla I stay around 20-40 feet. And a tank lasts usually 40-65 minutes. Also depends if I’m swimming/finning hard through the water. Usually I go with the current and waves to conserve air.

As someone who is Self-Reliant (PADI's solo course) certified, I think it's dumb that people are trolling you over your certs. The Self-Reliant course took one day. We did three dives, a few tests and skills, and received one lecture. The notion that one day's training creates super divers who can do what no other diver can is ridiculous, and, in any event, trolling fellow divers is lame. That said, I did enjoy the course and do recommend it if you ever have the opportunity. In my area quarries ask for the card to solo dive, but frankly the main value was a fun day training with fellow divers. To summarize, when solo diving they recommend a pony and regulator (gas redundancy); knife or shears (to cut entanglements); DSMB, mirror, flashlight, and whistle (to get attention at surface if necessary); and that you tell folks where you are and when you'll return. Admittedly, because traveling with, and renting, pony bottles is a hassle, I occasionally find myself solo without the gas redundancy. When that happens I make sure to maintain a large NDL cushion (and keep an eye on surface GF though not all computers show that) and stay at depths from which I can easily CESA to the surface. That way I can safely ascend at any time.
I'll add one more thing for the trolls -- nobody hassles someone for diving with an insta-buddy who is new to diving, or diving with young kids, both of which I have done many times, and yet those are essentially solo dives. Back when my kids were ten they weren't rescuing me if something went wrong. Instead, they were basically just carrying my redundant gas. Solo with a pony was safer and easier than helping a 10 year old! But people on the internet act as if solo diving is crazy. It's nonsense.

@@bigacefilmsnot so much a license but a certification to teach divers how to be self reliant, this includes having the right equipment, redundancies, and training to deal with emergencies. You won’t be stopped if you go solo on a shore dive without the proper certification, equipment, or experience but it is definitely frowned upon and many operators won’t even let you get in the water or rent equipment if you are not with a buddy. Diving is a sport that is not regulated by governments, and divers like it that way. So it is up to diving operators and the community to self regulate and bring awareness. Just my 2c.
Please do not sit on the bottom, just because it looks like lifeless sand doesn’t mean it is ok to disturb the sea floor. That is inconsiderate.
