This was their first music video and its going viral saved the band, which had been on the verge of breaking up.
Their inexperience really shows in this - they're clearly uncertain what to do with themselves, with slightly comic results - and at this point Miku could barely play, so her guitar is more of an unusual necklace than a functioning musical instrument.
They quickly moved forward from this: Saiki (lead singer) and MISA (bassist) adopted vamp and goth versions of the maid costumes, and they started to replace the label-mandated songs with their own (and better) creations.
Miku worked her backside off to become an effective rhythm guitarist, and their focus on writing songs with live performance in mind turned them into a stellar stage act.

Excellent reaction! Miku (rhythm guitar, vocal) started the band when she was working as a waitress at a Japanese "Maid Cafe". The "band of maids" concept was her idea. They're actually better live. Here's a link to one of their latest live releases.

This is the first video that turned me onto them 2 yrs ago and to think that this MV is almost 6 yrs old is amazing. They have only gotten better with Miku learning how to play guitar right in front of us while on stage. I've mentioned before that I wouldn't be surprised to see her break out with a solo later this year or next. But then again she might be content on being the rhythm guitar player similar to Malcolm was for AC/DC. She has definitely become an excellent rhythm player. Saiki seems to have settled into her role as lead singer and MISA on bass and Kanami on guitar are fantastic and Arkane is so good on drums Jimmy Page noticed her and stood with her for a pic.

Welcome aboard, Ely. You are embarking on (along with many others) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of rock n’ rollers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (nearly 100 songs with new album, “Conqueror”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their later songs drive even more - Rin’ne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series! And many are represented with over 25 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (sample “Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: ruclips.net/video/__1th7ctgMo/видео.html, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: ruclips.net/video/4uIYBkAybCI/видео.html, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: ruclips.net/video/usWZvlGGDSs/видео.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.).
Saiki Atsumi “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience.
Miku Kobato "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!!
Kanami Tono “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 28 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

Their maid costumes are more than a gimmick. Miku who started the band (backing vocals, rhythm guitar and lyrics) worked in one of those "famous" Akihabara maid cafe's and she also loved hard rock and metal like for example Maximum the Hormone. She had been in pop band(s) before but she wanted to form a band playing hard rock which she loved more. She wanted there to be what she calls a "gap" between the image and sound of the band: A band that dress in a very cute and servile style, but as a huge contrast melts your face with hard, loud and dominating rock.
The "maids-in-black" vocalist Saiki and bassist MISA were not willing to go all-in on full-on maid outfits, so they toned it down for them. Miku said in an interview MISA's outfit style was Assassin Maid, probably from some Manga/Anime character and probably just an after-the-fact excuse, but we love it since it since it really fits the elegantly dressed, beautiful, barefoot, mostly shy, whiskey/beer drinking woman that *really kills it* on the bass.

Yes - Band-Maid is proud new member in the league of the real great ones. They got it all: Complex but catchy, versatility, insane musicianship, top notch interplay, soaring vocals and beautiful harmonies and a insane powerful driving engine - one of the best rhythm section ever ... and last but not least refreshing ego free and goofy personalities 🖤
There are other great Bands to discover in Japan, but no one comes close to Band-Maid as full package in my opinion.
I would like to recommend to do next:
Domination live 2020 - awesome live performance ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html
Blooming, it got everything what makes B-M unique - ruclips.net/video/uUt_JBMocKM/видео.html
Real Existence one of their earlier songs in a powerful live performance - ruclips.net/video/-qQnKILR5u0/видео.html
Rinne - their hardest song so far ruclips.net/video/CQ9dbEVgZcA/видео.html ... and for a contrast
    Daydreaming live - a beautiful Ballade ruclips.net/video/wTAXAVErogk/видео.html
and some 90 excellent songs more

Live you say? Band-Maid is an awesome live band, and there are plenty of live videos to choose from. Since you said you would have liked to see a drum solo, I would suggest you check out Domination live next. My favorite song would be Secret My Lips though.
About the two singers, Miku (rhythm guitar) was originally the only singer and a few months later they added Saiki, with her voice able to give more power to the songs and to utilize dual vocals to expand their sound. Miku did not even play guitar prior to Saiki joining the band.
Edit: forgot to mention that they have 2 songs all in English, Don't Let Me Down and The Dragon Cries. Though are not at the top of my list.

Thanks for reacting, formed in 2013 by Rhythn Guitarist and vocalist Miku Kobato. Five Major releases so far three mini albums and three full albums with the last released in December last year.
The idea behind the band is the contrast between the visuals and then the sound and also the sound and the lyrics.
Members (ages between 24 to 29)
    Akane Hirose ;- Drums (A-chan. the beast,Gorilla)
    Saiki Atsume :- Vocals (Sai-chan)
MISA :- Bass :- (the Assasin. Misa, Misa, Misa)
Kanami Tono :- Guitars (Mincho, main songwriter)
Miku Kobato :- Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Lyricist (Small Pigeon, wide shoulders, strong grip, Karuppo) Kobato in Japanese can be interpreted as small pigeon and Miku never met a pun she didn't like or a chance to mess with peoples heads Po!!.
Also they have a slightly twisted sense of humour, for example the single Alone was released on Valentines day, and for the last two years on April fools day they rename themselves, the bands social media as Band Maiko where they dress as apprentice geisha's and release a video of a song written in the geisha dialect with some traditional instruments in it.
Relentless live band due to having played basically anywhere they could plug in they also tend to add extra parts to the songs live , The costumes might have got their foot in the door but they have earned what they have gotten the old fashioned way, Worked hard, Toured hard, and constantly looked to improve.

Great band and they have just gotten better over the years. They are a true Juggernauts live I would suggest Play, Domination or Moratorium. As for punk try out Maximum the Hormone which is a mixture of Hardcore Punk, Metal & Pop, Yoshu Fukushu is a great starting point for them.

    Nostalgia Nostalgia Nostalgia! 2014
Sai-chan still hasn't learned how to use her hands (holding on to the mike stand like it is a life preserver) and is wearing an apron
MISA wearing shoes and using a 4 string
Miku holding the Guitar like its a weapon (or neck ornament) not an instrument
Mincho before she changed to PRS Guitars
    and of course
A-chan still with the little hat

You can't go wrong with any of Band-Maid's live videos. Thrill was, I believe, their first music video, circa 2015.
For a proper punk sound try Otoboke Beaver "Don't Light My Fire" or any of their videos really. Or for indie/pop punk sound try Hazy Sour Cherry; or for a kind of dance-punk sound try Chai (Chai are actually very good musicians), too bad they get so dance heavy with their punk undertones though. By the way these are all female bands. I don't know why I've been gravitating to the sounds that the female bands are creating. I like some male band's sounds too like Asian Kung Fu Generation and so on. But anyway....

If you're looking for a more punk sound, someone here already mentioned two excellent bands: Otoboke Beaver (try "Don't Light My Fire"), and Mutant Monster. A cool listen is also the group Judy and Mary - their producer had an association with the Ramones, and they made an homage you might enjoy: ruclips.net/video/FB7IFtpVf0s/видео.html (And yeah, I agree with everyone who recommended Band-Maid's live clips. You can't go wrong with any of them. Their studio music vid of "Dice" is also excellent, and my personal favorite.)
