I've read it twice. Once in high school and just now at 39yrs old. The whole section around the picnic at Clara's is so comforting. One of my favorite fictional settings. I like the fact that all the characters have the same human doubts and joys as I do, except they live a much rougher life than I. The sequel and prequels are not as impactful, still worth a read.

Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece. It may not be on my top 10 list anymore, but that’s just because I’ve read too many books. But it definitely sticks in my brain to this day.

Had been in my “to read list” for years. My Mum read it once upon a time, along with “The Stand”, and had highly recommended them to me forever.

I reading this right now, mostly because you prompted me to. The dialogue is so powerful, even when they say very little. I find myself so lost in the story that hours have passed and don't want to put it down.

Great review! I read this book when I was 12 on the recommendation of my father and it had a profound impact on me. To this day it is my favourite novel, I read it at least once a year and annoyingly recommend it to anyone I meet who is a reader. If you want to purchase a book from a store and they don't have it, usually they will order it in for you. The best way to go in my opinion, especially if it's an independent book store.

Just wanted to say I enjoy your Instagram immensely and that it's really influential. I read Piranesi because of you and it's now one of my favourite books ever. It gave me the longest book hangover and I even gifted a copy to a complete stranger. That sounds weird but she's a friend of a friend so it wasn't like I just walked up to someone in the street.

I just finished this today. I'm usually a fantasy reader and I'm almost positive this was my first Western, but I really loved it. Maybe it's because it's all I read, but I noticed a lot of parallels between Westerns and Fantasy. The whole race war concept, hostile terrains, mysticism, good vs. evil, quests, and the cattle drive sections were very reminiscent of the military fantasy I've read. So yeah, lots of interesting overlaps between the two I hadn't considered. Maybe that's why a lot of the biggest open world video games are either fantasy or westerns. Food for thought! Cheers! Loved the video!

I read this book probably 20 years ago but recently bought a copy in the hopes my husband would dive in to it. He has not (bummer!) but your enthusiasm makes me want to do a re-read myself. I also want to suggest that you ask your local book store to order the books for you. I know it's easier to order them online but if you don't really need them ASAP I think they'll be happy to get them in to the shop for you.

I'm like you and never annotate books. But there's one passage I tabbed. I dogeared that book on page 845-846. It's what Clara told Call before he left:
"'I'll write him, (Newt)' she said. 'I'll see he gets your name if I have to carry the letter to Montana myself. And I'll tell you another thing: I'm sorry you and Gus McCrae ever met. All you two done was ruin one another, not to mention those close to you. Another reason I didn't marry him was because I didn't want to fight you for him everyday of my life. You men and your promises: they're just excuses to do what you plan to do anyway, which is leave. You think you've always done right -- that's your ugly pride, Mr. Call. But you never did right and it would be a sad woman that needed anything from you. You're a vain coward, for all your fighting. I despised you then, for what you were, and I despise you now, for what you're doing'".
