I just watched the video you kindly made for the EAF on the ASIAIR. I have just started guiding on my HEQ5 Pro and any tips you have would be fantastic.

Hi John welcome! my first tip would be to not get too stressed by it .... not sure what scope you are using but guiding can vary from night to night and its not always understandable why one nights good and the next totally unpredictable! Seeing and conditions affects it a lot. So keep at it - the belt mods for the HEQ5 will help and good polar alignment - check the star shape on the guide page and check they are not flat topped - they should be nice peaks .. if flat reduce guide camera gain ... and keep exposure loops to a 2-3 second loop. Other than that keep at it and see how you get on .. and shout on the comments on that video if you get stuck :) have fun ... Simon

Hi Simon. I have a heq5 that I hope to use for astrophotography sometime in the future. Many people recommend a belt mod. Do I really need this or is it something nice to have but not really necessary?

Hey Richard - the belt mod will certainly help - this removes the multiple gears between the worms and the servo motors in that mount.... you will notice it sounds a bit like a coffee grinder when it slews (no offence intended) - the belt mod removes these as they introduce additional backlash etc - so the belt mod reduces the issue of those additional gears ... it also quietens that mount a lot ... I did a couple for locals - I'd recommend it as a simple and relatively cheap upgrade to improve that mount .... or older EQ6's too :)

I have an NEQ6 and did the belt mod on that mount, it makes a huge difference!
