  • @makeitkate3240
    @makeitkate3240 4 года назад +5

    Good one! I think dairy cows have the most enjoyable feeding response of any species I have. It’s like they feel the vibration of the food dropping in, and the race is on. One of my favorite things to give them would be the moly’s from our mealworms. I skim them off the top of the mealworm bin and drop them in a pile in there. The dairy cows go nuts for it. I’m finding that my armadillidium species prefer fresh foods like fruits and veggies, but the porcellio prefer proteins. One other crazy thing I’ve been noticing is the difference in results from feeding untreated leaves vs heat treated. With untreated leaves, they eat it faster and they breed much faster. Really interesting.

    • @SupremeGecko
      @SupremeGecko  4 года назад +1

      Completely agree on the mealworms. Yes on Armadillidium=veggie and Porcellio=protiens. Interesting about the leaves. I find mine enjoy some types FAR more than others. Great points!!!!!

    I scooped up a family of 8 or so isopods from the side of my house (dark gray in color with lighter spots here and there, new york area) ... i threw them in a cantainer with shreded dry maple leaves as a bed a few soaked leaves as top dressing and a few dry broken branches on that ... they seem happy for now ... is there anything around the house I can feed them rather than me going to pet store for something? ... at least for now until i go out and get something more balanced? (im thinking like lettuce or potatoe or fruit or something i may have on hand?) -thx
    the only reason i did it actually is because i trapped a cave orb weaver in a container and its in my garage and when I see flies on screens i trap them and feed it to my spider but winter is coming and I obiously won't get flies in winter so i figure i could use them as alternative food source if needed (although i honestly never saw it eat an isopod yet, not sure if it will) ... i know i could get live flies or something from pet store but i honestly not sure if its worth the hassle for a quarter inch common orb weaver ...

    • @SupremeGecko
      @SupremeGecko  4 года назад +1

      Congrats on the orb weaver. It will be fun to watch this one. I'm not sure if it will eat the isopods but it is worth trying. Keep me posted. Yes, feed leaves and decaying wood for sure. But feed also firmer veggies like potatoes, pumpkins, squash, etc. Hope this helps.

    • @SupremeGecko

      I believe mites will feasr on any food. If you want to be extremely safe, you can bake/perhaps microwave your food. But, you might still find them in your bin. Minimize mites by using isopods and taking out any uneaten food after a few hours.

    • @SupremeGecko

      I'm not experienced in the 'bad' woods but I would guess any 'sappy' woods or any that produce a resin. Pine would seem to be one that you should avoid as well.

    • @CosmicDarkLord
      @CosmicDarkLord 4 года назад +1

      I would recommend looking up hard woods vs soft woods. Essentially if the tree dropps its leaves its good for most insects. Those that do not drop leaves in the fall tend to be evergreen trees and have natural things to kill bugs. Isos arent technically insects but should probably follow the same logic.

      @@SupremeGecko sometime I really don't understand why people feed their pets (like isopods) with shop stuff, or even buy leaves from the store. It makes no sense).

      @@bibytom863 I completely understand. For buying leaves, I think some people either do not have access to hardwood leaves, or the leaves they can find are not pesticide free. For buying supplemental foods, since feeding my Supreme Isopod Chow, I have seen dramatic differences in the health/reproduction of the isopods. This is not super important but it is noted. • @SupremeGecko
      @SupremeGecko  3 года назад +1

      It is. Think of a piece of wood that has sat outside for 4-6 months. It is softer and easier for the animals to break down. A cooked piece of wood is still fairly stable and not as easy for the critters to munch on.
