The thing I love about Mal is that he is always super competent. He never becomes randomly bad at his job just for the plot, instead he just has a nasty streak of bad luck tailing him.
It took a while for me to figure it out, but after a while it made perfect sense. The mix of science fiction and wild west genres seemed jarring. But if you are in charge of the core worlds and just want to use your colony planets for resource exploitation then late 1800s technology has a lot.going for it. The technology is robust and can be transplanted easily. It does not require a significant amount of technical training to use, produce and maintain. It's reasonably efficient. And you can let the locals pretty much run around with all the gunpowder based weapons they think they need. They will be more than able to deal with any dangerous wildlife they might encounter and can police themselves if they need to. But most importantly they will not be able to offer any serious resistance to your energy weapon armed and ballistic armored main combat forces if you need to force them back into line. Just my two cents on the issue. I liked the way they made Kaylee an "intuitive" engineer. I also think that one of the reasons that River had so many problems to deal with was that the Alliance realized that if she was in full control of herself and her talents that they would be unable to control her. I also liked the way the movie ended. [Spoiler alert] With the River becoming the new pilot and having a certain amount of precognitive capability then the ship is much more likely to be exactly where it needs to be. Also, almost guaranteed that eventually some schmuck of a bad guy is going to make the career ending mistake of trying to take the "obviously defenseless" pilot hostage.
LOL. River: "Oh, no. You've kidnapped me and brought me to your super secret hideout where your boss lives and works?" Henchman #2: "Yeah, that's right." River: "And that's the only way in and out?" Hench #1: "Yeah. Makes it harder to escape" River: "It certainly does make it hard for *you* to escape." Henches: "Wut?" River grins and stretches her previously handcuffed arms with the cuffs still dangling from a wrist. "Wanna dance?"
While I watched all of these several years ago yesterday the RUclips algorithm decided I needed to watch them all again. Before I attempt the exorcism that the algorithm clearly needs I will go along with whatever spirit is currently in charge of it and watch all of the Firefly episodes again.
now there was a character you should talk about - Saffron Saffron: We've been wed. Aren't we to become one flesh? Mal: Well, no. Uh, we're still two fleshes here. talk about complicated relationships
These video's are a great break down with some of the greatest Scifi characters of all time! Why did it take me 8 years to discover your channel? There are still scenes from this show that give me the feels, not to mention some of the lines are and will be quotable till the end of time. You can't take the sky from me!!!
Firefly. Unadulterated goodness. Movie wasn’t too bad either. Would have been awesome to see River’s story arc treated correctly over 2-3 seasons “hands of blue” comin’ fo’ you... ;)
you know you've seen too many of these videos when you're reading about chemistry and the voice in your head as you do so is Jill's. it's very weird...
One of my favorite mal moments was when Simon asked why he came back for them and mal said because you’re on my crew. He is loyal to his crew yet when needed he’ll give them a fright like threatening to shove Jayne out the airlock in Ariel. For me there is only one character I hate. They aren’t bad it’s just there weren’t enough episodes to payoff their attitude. Had they got a bit more development it would’ve been ok. Even in the books it doesn’t payoff.

Along the same vein, he's also not a Gary Stu. He's super competent but isn't perfect at everything. He's...human.

I can't say if the writers put that much thought into it, but your explanation makes a lot of sense and answers a lot of questions.
LOL.

Okay, but can we talk about how good these old videos are?
Going through your back catalog. Charmed.
now there was a character you should talk about - Saffron
Saffron: We've been wed. Aren't we to become one flesh?
Mal: Well, no. Uh, we're still two fleshes here.
talk about complicated relationships
Did not want to visit the special hell until it was pushed on him
You mean "Yosaffbridge"?
As Mal calls her in a later episode, unsure of what false name she's using this week.
We dressed up for a CSTS event....
My daughters friend went as Yolanda/Bridget/
It was fun
By my pretty bonnet, I like ur comment on Jayne caring deep
I don't watch much TV but did watch Firefly. These characters were brilliant. The writing and the actors worked together quite well.

"And this is our brief character study of Mal".
That's a fact!

❤ How did I just now find these??? So happy these vids of yours exist.
Annnnd now I'm binge watching Firefly.
Gah I miss this show. It was soo good.
Excellent!
The answer is Inara. ;)
You are a genius!
The reason its tough to pick a favourite is because everyone on the ship is an aspect of Mal.
So many shows die after the UrSeT gets resolved.

Anyone else here because they found their spirit animal during quarantine?
Sort of? I'm just geeking on Firefly stuff because Captain Mal's been my spirit animal since Firefly existed.

That woman who claimed she was Mal's wife later ended up..."trashed." 😉
