Another Ford EcoBoost Engine Bites the Dust!

- In this video we take a look at why this Ford 3.5L EcoBoost is ticking so loud. Ended up being from a broken piston skirt causing piston slap and hence the sharp rap noise. #ford #fordf150 #enginerepair #automotiverepair #ecoboost #failure #automotive
200k on my ecoboost runs so quiet. Like new. I love it.
170k flawless miles on my hard working 2021. Love it.
20k failed, 50k failed on my 2020. On its 3rd engine. Ferd built tough?
@@ICantBreveit's sad how much of a toss up it seems with ecoboost. Literally flip a coin if you make it past 100k or not
Lol..duralast
14 gen 1 with 318000kms and obscene amounts of idle time. All original
Thats happen when u dont do maintanance!!!...not just for Ford...every car in the road NEED maintanance!!!!
@handymanrico7209 right but some brands you have to baby and others will keep going with far less maintenance
@@silversonic99You should maintain a car regardless😂 It’s really not that hard, if it’s Ram Chevy or Ford, it shouldnt be that hard to maintain your fluids
@@Kopester right, but again, with that same maintenance other brands last way longer
@@silversonic99 No brand is better than the other. All brands have shitty motors or transmissions. For ford it’s the 6.0 and 6.4 powerstroke, for Chevy it’s their Allison transmission, and for Dodge it’s 5.7 hemi depending on the year. My 5.4 3v which is considered on of fords worst engines has 230k with no issues whatsoever because I CHANGE THE OIL every 3-4K miles. Maintain them and they will last, even if there not considered good
Thats the passenger side cam adjuster popping up and down.
Its from low oil pressure.
The cam phaser solenoid pulses to adjust the cam position.
As it pulses the pressure drops and increases with each pulse.
Its low oil pressure.
Either a bad pump or plugged oil pan pickup.
lack of oil change?
Those fine screened solenoids need to have clean oil.
If you watched the full teardown video on this, or listen to where the noise is originating from you'd know it's not a cam phaser or solenoid causing this noise. It's coming from the middle of the cylinder head the loudest, and he said it was the loudest at the center valve cover bolts, but It ends up being a broken piston skirt causing the piston to slap the side of the cylinder wall. This Ecoboost didn't have the same Ecoboost problems the others do. Customer claimed this happened shortly after an oil change, didn't appear to be from lack of maintenance though as the rest of the engine looked good. But it did have a aftermarket tuner on it, so he may have been running more boost on this overall stock engine and it decided it was tired of it, or potentially a weak casted piston that decided enough was enough. Customer got a new engine in this case
Assuming just cause it may be common will bite you over and over
My 2013 ecoboost is rocking 340k miles, time for some new turbos 😂
That’s awesome! My 2013 just went over 250,000 miles, all stock, engine, turbos, cats, cac, cai all original.
First week it was purchased it had a (banks monster 3”) catback exhaust put on. And a suspension leveling kit, That’s all for ‘extra parts’.
@244,000 miles I put in a five star 87 performance tune (very conservative) just pepped it up a tiny bit.
Truck purrs, is so quiet, sometimes you can’t tell it’s even running 😂
I first bought it with a little under 200k the dealer got one over on me by disabling the CEL so I had a cat to swap first thing. Right show she's not doing so hot. I'm pretty sure the eBoV is preferated and now we have an argument over how the brakes should feel, she's playing it hard. Changed master cylinder last year so hoping it's like a freak air pocket and not the booster. Still gotta get under the skirt and update alot of parts, over 300k really puts the screws to an ecoboost. But I can still get her down the road and that counts.
She's a 2013 Lariat 4x4 and I am spoiled to all the bells and whistles, though an upgrade on the Amp would be nice, still stock Amp beats the block with a kicker 12.
Sitting at 298k on my 2013 ecoboost. Thinking about getting turbos done soon myself
@@kevingeezy5176 don't put it off. I'm now limping around with an underboost and misfire trying to save up enough to either fix or swap engines. Damn sure don't wanna pay another note. Over 340k and I wanna hit 1m
Duracrap coils... they're almost expensive as OEM. I don't know why anyone would waste money on Duralast. I guess with that engine it doesn't matter at this point haha
They're all fresh too... Bet someone had a miss before this happened and parts cannoned all the coils and plugs.
Jd powers and consumers digest rate the engines very highly. Anyone can find a ecoboost making funny noises and then decree that all ecoboost engines are bad
I wonder if Digest has a conflict of interest.
Just breaking ,it's a Ford it will still run forever
Fords are not reliable vehicles. Toyotas are much more reliable.
Should have changed the oil… these are great engines. The 2.7 ecoboost, also
Engine was clean, piston skirt on # 2 broke.
Sounds like a dodge ram now 1500 lol
Had two hemis/two ram’s blew that sounded like this. That’s what I thought
When they run normal! Ford trucks all the way 💯
I GOT THREE HEMIS. LOVE SYNTHETIC OIL. NO PROBLEMS.
Duralast coils? I see the issue.
It ticks like an old Singer...
Me quedo con mi 2002 motor 5.4 y con mi expedition 2002 4.6..
Broken Piston Skirt Cyl 1 😩😩😭

Let me guess....Low maintenance.
Ugh cheap aftermarket coils. Immediate cringe.
These are EXCELLENT engines. Change the oil on time folks!
No they are not, v8 or nothing and if its 4cylinder it better be a k24
@@DJV940227A-FE FTW.
They are "good" engines. Excellent engines aren't affected by lack of maintenance.
@@davidwickboldt712 Engines in the EXCELLENT category: 225 Slant Six and Ford 300 six.
The Banks Power badge under the F150 badge tells me all i need to know. What kind of tune on it / what octane? Combine a tune with some Duralast coils and she ain't lasting long. Too bad too, because that engine looked pretty well maintained.
Banks is good stuff, but gotta have quality parts and good fuel.
@@sHoRtBuSseR I don't disagree. This screams someone who meant well, but ended up with a used truck, a budget (duralast parts), and now... a blown engine. Tough lesson. Cheap horsepower does not exist, at least, not for long. Glad he brought it to the best Ford tech around. Blessed to be within driving distance of this absolute legend of a mechanic.
@@frankgrimes591 100% agree, he does phenomenal work.
@@sHoRtBuSseR I have brought two F150s to BSG with no regrets. Fair and thorough, great guy. Hope his son takes over some day.
Sounds like my mom's old 03 2.7LV6 Dodge Intrepid that damn car kept running even with that noise she lasted until 280,000 mi
This is the go to Ford YT channel hands down. 😑
🇺🇸🏁🏴☠️
Meshing
We have to do something about our American 🇺🇸 brands where is our old good quality control. That’s how we’re going to make America greater again.
Is that buzzing the PCV valve?
yes
229,000 miles on my 5.4 liter triton 😂😂 still purrs on every start
At 300kmiles I won't replace the ignition coils on my eco unless is necesary to replace 1 ,but has to be motorcraft
My last 4 cars were all Fords, and all were quite reliable. I won't own an EcoBoost Ford if at all possible. My current car is a Fusion hybrid that replaced a NON EcoBoost Fusion. I don't know if I will outlive this car, but if worse comes to worse I will buy a lightly used hybrid again.
The Million miles Tundra is quieter than this 200,000 miles woke engine.
Just replace the serpentine belt
I thought this was considered normal. I mean when you take your truck to the dealership and it sounds just like that when it's under warranty that's what Ford tells you
It's a ford. They are junk from design
I am not a mechanic.
My truck makes exactly the same noise.
I told 3 mechanics what I thought but no one would listen to me.
I finally got fed up and bought a borescope cam. I found debris in my oil pan.
I had the oil pan removed and the engine oil galleries cleaned.
Problem is now gone.
When u hear that noise check ur oil pressure. Insist that your mechanic does so.
This is a snippet of a longer video. A piston skirt broke off and what you hear is the rest of the piston rocking as it goes up and down
The worst engine ford has ever designed! POS to the max!
Is this a Short to the vid with the busted piston skirt?
yes
Thats why i sold my Ford and bought a Honda...
👍

More thin synthetic oil problems
Another prime ford. Piece of trash😂
Is some more junk ford products
That sounds like a rod
Mechanic in can won't fix that ,lol
Sounds like a ford to me
Fix Or Repair Dailey
But it IS normal for a Ford
The same thing happened to me. Broken roller tapper.
no, different valvetrain
Lmao I almost shit myself when you said it was an ecoboost. I just assumed it was a 5.4 3v. 😂
Yeah, I have 150k miles on my 5.4L, just waiting for it to explode on me.
@@ThunderStruck94660 mine just rolled past 265k. 05 King Ranch 5.4. I’ve sunk a ton of money into the engine, it’s still a turd but I’ve gained a little bit of reliability. They tell me it’s “Bulletproofed” I’s like call it what you want but I wouldn’t even point a BB gun it’s direction as it’ll prolly blow a cam phaser just incase. 🤣
@@brianoconnor1519 What did you do to it? I have a King Ranch also (was stationed at NAS Kingsville for three tours) and it is a sweet vehicle. I’ll probably just put a new engine that has the cam phasers issues fixed and put it in. This truck will be my coffin.
Crap motors
FORD is garbage period.....😂😂😂
All new trucks are garbage period...... just chevy and dodge are worse off. 🤣😂
@@kylebuehrer5710 no think you got that wrong Ford has the most recalls then any manufacturer now plus they use cheap material my good friend bought f150 platinum 2022 and has nothing but problems oil leaks electrical issues with door locks unlocking and locking while driving down road manufacturer are refusing to fix it's a no brainier when it comes to buying a new truck GM is top period.....😂😂😂
Let me guess 3.5?
No, it's normal 😅
Bad sprokers
these use mechanical buckets?
yes
Piston came apart
Sounds expensive
Icky! Boost!
EcoBust
My wifes 2009 Ford Edge sounds like that....
Junk
There's a piston out of sorts.
I have been a mechanic long time 67 years old and have been working on Mercedes for the last 35 years and looking at that engine..what a mess looks like the engineer never returned from his liquid lunch ..disgusting
Piston slap?
5% Diesel 90% gasoline ,5% alcohol..
What is happening to the quality control of modern trucks is so sad.... auto makers should be sued!
😬
Don't worry the warranty and dealership will just say it's the injectors and normal.. a reason i wont buy another ford.
My buddy blew the motor in his 60k raptor by pulling a 6500 lb trailer. All I needed to buy a Tundra instead.
I have the new 1.0 2018 engine in the UK on a focus and I have an oil leak.Right hand engine oil separator.Apparently not fixed can fool the turbo into superboost mode and in turn blow up the engine
You can tell that truck is had a lack of maintenance. It will get them every time all of them GM the whole 9 yards if you don’t take care of that result.
Makuloco!!!
Piston is busted and is rattling. Check the oil, you'll find the parts.
What's that buzzing?
PCV valve, normal for the Brown ones.
Ooh boy, its probably just a 100 dollar ignition coil.
Piston skirt missing.
Ok Thankyou for reply
Its the rod bearings that how my ppv with the ecoboost engine use to sound. I changed mine out it's sounds great now.
YT is full of videos about why you should stay away from eco crap powered fords.
My 2018 5.0 sounded kinda like this at idle... was told 100% normal by 3 different dealerships
my son's got 300 000ks on his 3.5. Just change that oil at every 5000ks
My 2013 5.0 also sounds similar. At one point it kind of sounded like a diesel and got worried. After looking into it on the internet, apparently it’s normal. My mileage is at 125xxx and still going strong, fingers crossed.
my 2019 Expy sounded Just like that. Brought to the dealer and they said it was the phasers .
@yamamastes when did your tapping start? I have a 2012 with it at 87k
@@jackhoff2189 I honestly can’t remember the mileage but i know it was around 2019. I want to say it was before the 100k mark. It was actually my wife that brought it up as i had not even noticed. Its been little less than 4 year and the water pump and some heater hoses have been the only major components that i have replaced. I can’t complain. Hopefully i can at least make it to the 200k mark without replacing an engine or transmission. Lol
Sounds fine for a diesel
The sound of a piston skirt broken off sounds normal 😂
And my truck only has 82.00 and is 100% completely stock.
3.5 ecojunk
Give it a few more weeks and that rod will shoot into the sky faster than space x
Sounds like a diesel on a cold morning
Sounds like all the new fords if encountered
A busted piston skirt maybe?
I can guarantee you this is a Ford engine.
Eco boom
I bought the F150 with the 5.4 and it had a tapping sound so I put 3 liters of Trans Fluid in it and drove it for an hour and it stopped ticking. I have been driving that truck for 8 years now and that tapping never came back,
No way that’s sick
What do you spect ? It's a Ford
Quality is job one again 😂
replaced my motor @ 185k
It's a cracked piston wall on #2.
Turn the radio up.
Normal depends on zip code 😜
Yeee
usually a knock means you wanna come in , mocking to get out..
What engine is that
It sounds like a Cummins
EcoBust!
Ford 😂😂😂
I have a 3.7 ,are they the same ?
How many miles
It the cam phaser I have that in my truck I just bought 3 months ago
Piston actually.
I was just wondering. I'm thinking about buying a 2024 Ford F-150 with the 5.0 in it. Do you know how them engines are doing?
So far so good.
@@FordTechMakuloco okay, the only bad thing is it's like 67,000?
