The burnt part is a MOV. It won't be a surge protector anymore when you bypass them. You just have a simple power strip then.

Wonder if I can use soldering to replace with another one?

This should be a PSA why Electricians don't repair electronics. You could have desolder it and replaced the same switch and added a few MOV to ground it would still be a Surge protector.

Did you just remove the surge protection off a surge protector 😂😂

Lol basically. To be fair, I did set out thinking I could fix it. Once I realized that wasn’t possible I just made a plug strip haha

You could've figured out the MOVs were toast since the protection light was off, and you could've saved the original switch if you had desoldered the contacts from the circuit board.

That was a thermal fuse that got to hot.

@@TheSickestNick yes/No. The frustrating part is the house electrical fuse/breaker should have blown before the thermal fuse. It is the last defense. I had a brand new electrical cord do the same thing and there was no reason for the fuse to blow, totally rendered a brand new cord useless.
My only guess is since they are inside an electrical enclosure they just get hotter faster than they should, and I was using in a hot area of my shop. That's my story and I am sticking to it 😀

What did you use to reattach the back cover now that you drilled out the rivets? You skipped that part.
