HUGE REPAIR COSTS | Toyota Landcruiser 200 | Problems, Issues, repairs, service and maintenance cost

- I wish I was creating a clickbait thumbnail when quoting $18,056.34 in repairs bills and maintenance costs, but I'm not.
This is how much I have spent on my 2014 Toyota Landcruiser 200 series 1VDJ V8 twin turbo diesel in the last 12 months alone.
I will concede that some of the repairs have been as a result of aftermarket modifications and accessories, but a large chunk has not.
In this episode I outline all of the issues and costs involved in rectifying them that I've encountered in the last 12 months.
This video is out there to create awareness and prepare those who are looking to travel, just like I'm doing. It's not all sunshine and rainbows like some content creators make it out to be but on the other hand please don't let information like this discourage you. There is no reality where Teagan and I would ever regret travelling around Australia while our kids are at this age and money is just that, it's money. It comes and it goes...

Mate you have a great attitude. I'd be curled up in the corner of that happened to me.
Thanks for the real life problems that travellers go through.
Keen up the great work
Haha 😆 some curling was done at certain times.
But it is what it is, how can we complain when we are out here enjoying our best lives 👍
MORAL TO THE STORY: Keep everything as stock as possible and work hard at keeping your weight down. And if possible try to do as much maintenance as possible (not easy for some I know). Great video mate. Thanks for the update👍
Adding modifications sure do add another level of complexity, however I will stated that the turbo failure, starter motor failure and leaking intercooler (all the expensive items) were issues without modification. It is disappointing, but it is what it is in the end.
Either way, we are lucky we had some savings and we are back on the road having a trip of lifetime 👍
I'd say the TLDR is don't drive through rivers whenever possible.
Wurthit 1239 100% correct, however such a statement comes only from People with experience gained over many years.
Chrikey must have more dollars then I ever will have, quite happy to run my 4x4 almost stock and regular servicing, all these mods are a nightmare along with redicillus extreme tracks.
Love your channel, love my 200 LC, after owning a troopy for many years and now my 200 I am not put off but appreciate your report and honesty, thank you.
Awesome thanks mate 👍
This is still genuinely the best vehicle I’ve ever owned and don’t want to have to part with it anytime soon
Good update, and an honest one at that. Pleased to see your keeping the vehicle. I was originally looking at a 200 series but ended up buying a 2005 GU Patrol factory TD42, for its simplicity, reliability and ease of repairs. Had it coming up two years now and it’s only ever seen a mechanic for a road worthy since buying. I’m lucky that I have time to maintain it myself and also learn how stuff works / goes together. Hope your trip is going well and the cruiser gives you no more grief.
Thanks mate, appreciate it 👍
Yes the mighty TD42 is a great option and great to hear it’s working out for you 👍
Might be time to look at servicing the 200 myself upon return back home
Thats always been my plan precovd. Have a gq td42 but burns a bit of oil.
May I ask how much you spent? Gu td42ti would be fantastic but not keen on spending over 40k
Gotta love the gu patrols. I now have a y62 with the fruit, and it's been a great truck so far. However, I really miss my GU! That truck took me everywhere and was easy to maintain. The simple things are often the best, especially out in the bush 😊
Someone had to do this; too many similar stories remain untold and the fanboys believe their own fairy tales. Great to find an honest owner.
With only 155kW and 450Nm, why is it even called mighty? That really is 4 cyl Hilux / D Max territory. And the Isuzu 4jj3 engine will last at least half a million clicks. So, this 4.5V8 seems a bit too much for too little. Toyota factory fitted Mercedes-Benz engines to Landcruisers; different engine types incl the Unimog OM314 4 cyl. But on the 300, Toyota opted for petrol and Diesel Mazda V6 engines.
So mainly maintenance issues on an almost 10yr old vehicle that has done a heap of off road work, and now tows a heavy van most of the time.Lucky you are not driving some of the other brands.Have a good time, and keep up the great vids.
Yeah, it’s all part of the experience and privilege of travelling this awesome country 👍
Yeah, some others would have caused many many more issues
Thanks for sharing your experiences Nathan. You are doing a great service by sharing where things can go wrong. It will definitely help other cruiser owners like myself to learn from it. I definitely appreciated your video. Cheers and goodluck to no more issues with cruiser. Looking forward to more videos of your adventures!
Awesome, that great to hear mate, I'm glad it can help and others can try and avoid issues like this.
Here's hoping that the worst is behind us now 🤞
You've got me reconsidering whether I should upgrade from a 1HDFTE 100 series to a 200 or 300 series. 🤔
So far on our lap it's been faultless, touch wood. Great video as always!
I’d stick with what you have..
Thats the only decent engine toyota has ever made, the rest are hot garbage in comparison
Hey mate, I know the 200's are really nice vehicles but I'd too stick with what you have if its still working for you and your needs 👍
Yeah Upgrade for sure....Sell your 100 series to me...please
@@giterdunpete Haha 😆
Good balanced content. I totally agree with your statement that a lot of the problems are aftermarket. The more you modify a car to "improve" it, the greater the scope for failure. That said, you've got a brilliant touring rig that is now sorted! Enjoy...👍
Cheers mate. Absolutely you are right, although I would add a stock cruiser would struggle in certain scenarios I expose my vehicle too. This being said, I’ve taken that into consideration and budget when modifying 👍
I don't feel that bad now I hung onto my Disco 2 V8. Your honesty is most appreciated and I agree with you that you have put your vehicle through some very tough and challenging environments. Personally, I avoid that which I learned from driving land rovers in the Army. Why go looking for it. If that's your thing then you will pay $$$ for it in the end. Fortunately for me, I can perform a lot of the necessary servicing of my Disco 2 myself but due to the Ace system, anything to do with that has to go in. Good luck on your travels and thanks for a meaningful video.
Cheers mate, appreciate your comment 👍
Everyone is a little different and I don’t try to come across disappointed, just want to make others aware of costs in these types of applications.
I love this vehicle and no doubt it will feature on the channel for many more years to come 👍
Hi Nathan,
23:30 pm in Spain…
Nice vid mate!
Very well received your message.
Enjoy your trip with the family
Cheers
Hey Holger 👋
Cheers mate, expensive hobby 🤦♂️
I hope you are keeping well and thanks for watching so late in Spain.
Cheers, Nathan.
Ouch some of those prices make ones eyes water.. but memories are priceless. Personally with my LC 200 no deep water crossings ,I have see many modern 4wd with electronics destroyed in Nolans brook & other crossing on th cape . The problems on friends LC electronics keep occurring for years due to corrosion on plugs terminals ECU etc. We did all those crossings on the cape in simple old Hiluxs and old Landrovers no electronics, water flows in and out few issues. I haven't touched my LC transmission just tow in 4 or 5 on occasions but van is 2.5 ton max. Enjoying your content safe travels.
They sure are scary figures ! But worth it at the end.
Yeah, electronics are a weak point but unfortunately also a common part in all modern day 4WD’s.
The cruiser will be around for longer to provide many more adventures to come 👍
It proves that the vehicle is quite strong. The failures you experienced are primarily due to heavy modification you have done and punishment you are giving it. Greater chunk of the costs seems point towards upgrade failures. Cv joints, brakes rotors, diffs, transmission will mean you have to upgrade to match increased weight.
The vehicle is incredibly strong, however turbos, starter motors and brake rotors (rears only) indicate other problems than that caused from my mods. The rear brakes had an issue, whether it be debris caught up within or not checked properly last service, but turbos and starters haven't been modified and shouldn't be failing.
Myself and a couple of mates all have 200 series cruisers.
They are set up for towing so gvm upgrades ect.
We all have the air cleaner upgrade now because of you.
We all have the lockup kits(richards).
Hope your not upset but we all refer to you as the guy who's always stuffing around with his car.
Im sure you cant drive without listening for something to go wrong.
Seems it was those water crossings that have led to your issues.
Hope it was worth it.
Re electrical issues.
Simple is better.
Seems you've created your own monster.
Reasonably stock cruisers with a few mods seems to be the way to go
And a lot less stressful.
Cheers and happy travels
Paul
Sorry to hear about the problems you've had with your 200. I have been reading some off the comments all l can say is there is a lot of 200 hate and modification hate out there. We have a 2012 200 about the same km as yours lot of mods 4 ton gvm and use it all traveling around this great country. I am 100 % confident to go remote our cruiser and in comfort. Keep up the great posts and have a wonderful trip.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🙏
I agree, they are great vehicles, I think I've just had a whole lot happen in quick succession, but realistically, with where I take my vehicles, I'm not disappointed in it's performance.
I hope you had had the compression tested prior to the turbo's Nathan. Often overlooked but 100% critical. You know our thoughts on VDJ dusting issues.
I think your right,I can see another video coming soon about low compression on few cylinders from dusting issues
Thanks for your honesty. My learning from your info is to travel light and stash some cash for the unexpected. But, I’m not the sort of fella who can afford to take risks on deep wading and rock crawling. For me, with adult kids, I’m happy with my tent or check into a cabin, motel etc
Thanks mate, I’m glad this helped somewhat. Absolutely I understand. Travelling full time turns the cruiser into a home, rather than just a short trip warrior!
Something I’m still learning 😆
Another informative, honest and enlightening video....well done and thanks again Nathan.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🙏
Firstly sorry for the expenses but a huge thankyou for being so up front and honest. There are so many people claiming nothing ever goes not to plan. I started watching you a couple of years ago that was why I bought the ultra gauge along with your experiments on tires etc.
Here's hoping you future expenses are minimal great content.
Thanks mate. It has been a rough year on the bank account, but the experiences are so much valuable 👍
Thanks for letting me know and supporting the channel, its great to hear that people are getting value from these videos 🙏
Wow !!! you are right about add-ons in many cases the vehicle needs to be re tweak to complement the new part; it also looks like you have put your vehicle certainly beyond its design capabilities. I have to commend you for your honesty which is reflected in your passion and enjoyment of life. Well done!!!!
Thanks mate, for sure. No vehicle is 'designed' for how I've used it, but this has certainly done well considering 👍
Thanks 🙏
That's the problem with modern touring setups, they have so much stuffed into them they are essentially mobile houses that bounce around as though they're built on a fault line, so you can expect house style maintenance costs
Appreciate the honesty. No car is perfect, but few say it how it is. Considering how you use your car, think it's holding up well. And no, I'm not a Toyota man.
Hey mate, appreciate the respectful reply. I agree, considering how I've treated this vehicle is has performed well 💪
This confirms what I've held about my 80 series....it will always be less expensive to upkeep over a new vehicle. Especially when you throw in the cost of the new rig itself.
Wow I've had a 200 series since 2012 it spends its life in the bush for my work and I have never replaced a part. Maybe it's all the aftermarket stuff causing the problems
No doubt that would be some of the reason, but things like dusted turbos are unlikely to be as a result of my doing.
Glad to hear some positive experiences though 👍
You tow a heavy van, do over bonnet water crossings etc like Nathan too? Having the time of your life…
Good on you Nathan for sharing - very informative. Keep the videos coming! Just love your attitude ... taking the challenges & setbacks in your stride.
Thanks Heath, appreciate that 🙏 In the end, it's just money and nothing can replace the experiences we are encountering.
Another brilliant video Nathan.
Like you I am extremely tough on my 200. It doesn’t get driven around on the streets that a day. It is in my garage and that it is on the tracks and typically it is doing the tough tracks.
Having a 3.2 t van on the back as you say things wear faster and quicker.
That’s a lot of money for sure, but your summary at the end is perfect. You cannot put a price on taking your children around Australia.
Thanks mate 👍
We didn’t build our setups for the Coles car park hey?
Wouldn’t change a thing though, memories last forever, money comes and goes!
Your glass half full outlook is great! I feel theres so much incompetence out there when looking for other people to work on your vehicle. It absolutely inflames me when I have to fork out extra to fix something that was recently replaced or supposedly fixed and its made me very cynical.
For sure mate. In the end we have to it all with a pinch of salt 👍
On the diff and transmission 'thing' - if there are no slip codes you don't need to replace those fluids. That said, delay transmission fluids if there are slip codes - that's a rebuild, but you can keep going for a while.
The most expensive mistake overlanders make is to "replace all fluids". Garages love that theme.
If you want to do a lap, don't do 500Km a day, do 200Km hops or even go down to 50Km hops.
One thing is for sure, you are an honest man! Very refreshing, thanks for sharing 😀
Cheers mate, I appreciate that 👍
Sorry to hear about the avalanche of issues. Hopefully your bank account can have a rest from repairing the cruiser! Thanks for the content, cheers
Haha, I certainly hope so to 🤞
Thanks mate 👍
Given the work she does I don’t think it’s too bad. You could save some money by doing some of the servicing yourself but that depends on what your own time is worth. Thanks for sharing.
I agree with you there mate, it has performed well given the conditions.
Yes, this is very true and thanks for commenting in a respectful and understanding manner, it appears that many have forgotten how to do this these days 🙏
Great you’ve got her running right again mate 🙏 & wasn’t donk issues. But this is why I have no interest in heavily modifying 4WD’S anymore.
Thanks mate, it has been a huge relief.
Yeah, we all have different requirements, some costing more than others 😆
@@XploringOz exactly man everyone has a vice & it brings you & your lil’ family joy & adventure is the main thing 💯
@@ADayInTheLifeOfJames 100%
Yikes. But, you think Eastern AU has hills? We are towing in NZ - real hills - very hard on brakes and transmission. Good luck with the rest of your trip.
Yup, Australian hills are nothing compared to them hills in NZ! Cheers from across the pond!
Haha, I have been over there a couple of times and I understand! We have it good here in Aus, but WA makes a pool table surface look rough 😆
Thanks for the watch mate 👍
Wow in for a penny in for a pound now, no turning back
I sold mine after the starter motor went so glad I did now
Yeah, its now a family heirloom 😆 We are committed now, but luckily I still love this vehicle 👍
Good to be honest and realistic with yourself and YT followers. But you know what, just smile and wave and enjoy the country 😊 (wallet permitting)
Your comments onwards from 13:55 are spot on as well. We're just about to hit the east coast for 8 weeks as a young family and as much as I know there'll be hiccups, it's the memories and experiences that are more valuable. Cheers 🍻
Cheers mate, here's hoping that others don't experience the number and severity of issues I've had 🤦♂️
Awesome mate, I hope you and the family have an awesome trip, I'm sure you will 👍
Glad you kept the rig mate. Best car I have ever owned, sounds like you just run into some bad luck . I have the original al 2007 with 300kms purs like new and never misses a beat . Here’s to some smooth cruising for many a kms for you 🍻
So am I mate 👍 Absolutely love this vehicle! Here's hoping we've seen the worst of it now 🤞
wow, thats incredible....... Great honest vid mate.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍
OMG ! Dealers know how to gouge car owners. My Prado is almost 20 years old, i spent very little on it. But I just use it as a daily run-about. I would never take my Prado to a Toyota dealer, find someone you trust. OR .. OR .. do the work yourself ! save $$$$$
To be honest, the dealer prices were competitive with outside service agents, but yes, when we are back at home some maintenance tasks can be completed by me to save some coin 👍
I’m currently doing a lap as well and had to get my timing belt replaced in Perth. I was pleasantly surprised to find that City Toyota were the cheapest and could fit it in much quicker than the ‘reputable’ shops.
@@tbmich1976 Yeah, I can share your experience there 👍
Hi Nathan, quick couple of questions, how many kilometres have you done and what year is your 200? I fitted a moonlight engineering stainless to my 200 from day one after watching one of your earlier posts and mentioning their product. Have you upgraded your air-box? Sorry mate but I don't always get the opportunity to watch every post, life gets in the way 😉
Hey mate, so this is a 2014 model with 165000 kms on the odo.
Yes, the airbox has always been on the list to change and a few months ago we swapped this out for the new Donaldson XLC200K unit which has been performing very well 👍
I’d say that’s cheap, most people seem to think they’re in a submarine not a car. And the more you can stick to stock the better. Fourbyx4 has a good saying, mud equals money. But I like your attitude, get out there and do it, can’t take it with you. I should add my ML 350 cast me $16000 in repairs on top of servicing in 4 years and I hardly took it off bitumen.
Great balanced content. Fact is that go put ANY other brand of the same age with the same kms on the clock through the exact same driving conditions and see if thát brand can beat TOYOTA reliability, irrespective.
Thanks mate. I agree with you there. It's held up well considering the abuse I've put it through 👍
Fantastic update Nathan. Great message at the end….you’re right, $18k is a lot of money to all of us, but what price for a lifetime of family memories.
In regards to the cruiser, what is there that would have been a better choice for what you want it to do?
Stay safe and keep enjoying your ‘lap’
Cheers
Thanks mate 👍
I’m not too fussed on the ml he side of things, focus my priorities (at least at the moment) on enjoying life and company.
I’d still buy the same vehicle again. This cruiser has a soft spot for me and as much as it has cost, it will live to be my favourite vehicle to date 👍
Y62 would be a way better option .bit more fuel but would of saved alot of that money
@@Alidilman I mean, maybe. But like I said in this vid, every vehicle has their issues. I have a mate who has just replaced the engine in his Y62 due to failure. Nothings perfect
@@XploringOz wow never heard of that
How did the engine die 😳
Most travelers wouldn't be able to afford to keep forking out so much money on so many repairs.
Hopefully your woes with this vehicle don't keep going.
It really highlights just how unreliable a vehicle can become, when fitted with "certain" aftermarket parts.
I personally prefer to leave a vehicle basically stock standard and the less electronic gadgets the better. Same goes for turbos, they are more trouble than they are worth. A normally aspirated motor is under less stress and is infinitely more reliable and less costly to run and maintain.
Best of luck for the rest of your trip, you certainly deserve it. 👍👍
Good on you for sticking with it.
Do you have any more info on the Victron failures? Im experiencing some Victron issues with my smart shunt. Cheers
Hey mate, the main issue I had was the shunt had corroded badly as it was mounted in the engine bay. I replaced this unit and moved it into the vehicle where it's now protected. No issues at this stage 🤞
What kind of issues are you having?
@@XploringOz I have the IP65 version under bonnet with my itechworld lithium. Its just been giving me some eratic readings and trend graphs through the app that go weird and I cant be sure if the problem is the shunt, the app or the battery (unlikely)
@@1Coolbanana Hmm, yeah this is definitely different to the issues I was having and unfortunately I'm not going to be much help with assisting you there.... That is strange though 🤔
@@XploringOz So far Im coming to the conclusion that Victron makes great hardware but shit software.
@@1Coolbanana I wonder if the heat is causing problems?
the only repair expense i would be upset with is known problem with poor sealing on airbox causing dusting of tubos thx for your honest content q
Yeah, and as evident is a huge portion of this total. It is incredibly annoying, but I’ve got the Donaldson box now running much cleaner air at less restriction 👍
Awesome share big fella!! Thank you for sharing, important to know these things being an owner of a LC200 myself. Glad that you’re keeping the big rig 🎉
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🙏
She isn't going anywhere anytime soon, absolutely love this vehicle 👍
Top video Nathan, gee that cruiser sounded good at the end!! I’ve been on the road for awhile so nothing you said surprised me, and I agree with all you said. My faith in Toyota dealerships has dropped somewhat so I’m doing my own minor services and they do the major ones, maybe!! People joke about boats, ‘Break Out Another Thousand’, put fourbees in there too. You are having buckets of fun though, and the top end should keep giving it to ya..
Thanks mate! Yeah, how good does it sound going up Ngkala Rocks!!
I agree, I would rely on Toyota warranty even if it were still there, but we pay premium for these experiences and I do t exactly give my cruiser a easy time 😆
Can’t wait to get into the top 👍
I own a 200 Cruiser, 200,000km, largely stock standard and I tow a 3300kg caravan.
There have been no major issues, in fact really no issues at all.
Modify and fiddle at your peril !
Great video, informative too. Well done.
Most costs incurred were either maintenance, externally caused, or abuse related, not vehicle reliability. Deep water crossings can damage turbos due to thermal shock, and starters aren't designed to be submerged. Add on electrical components appear to be the root cause of the electrical issues experienced, not the vehicle's electrical system. Towing would be considered extreme duty, so all things considered, the LC 200 has served its function.
I mostly agree with that and 100% agree that the cruiser has served its purpose.
The turbos had been dusted, so although thermal shock may be a cause for some turbo failure, it wasn’t in this instance. 👍
My 2021 Prado hasn't missed a beat in the first 35,000k. Then again, it hasn't had anything like the flogging your 200 series has been through. Mine won't get anywhere near the depth of water or the thickness of mud you have been in. We have fixed price Toyota dealer servicing at $260 each 6 months. Agreed for 5 years with warranty. An additional 2 years warranty if we meet the targets. No engine or electrical mods. Stock plus roof racks and tow kit. Van is 2600kg. Fingers crossed we get around the country without your drama mate. Bugger. Best wishes for a cheaper few months ahead.
That's good news mate 👍 I reckon you'll be absolutely fine with that vehicle. Just don't follow me off-road 😆
Going to review the DPU intercooler?
Be good to see before and after testing
It sure will be interesting to see what, if any difference is detected 👍
One of the best channels on youtube
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🙏
Intersting. My first thought was how many kays and age on the cruiser, obviously out of warranty ?
Yeah mate, we’ll and truely out of warranty. 2014 with 165000kms
@@XploringOz I'm guessing you'd agree the turbos is the worst part, at that price and given it's far from warranty you'd be better off with A/M turbos would be my thinking? The vehicle itself has slightly less than average k's. Brakes is to be expected and some maintenence in every car gets overlooked from time to time that's why we need careful and meticilious mechanics, many get a bit careless. Happy adventures mate.
@@livingadamman7994 For sure, the turbo's were the biggest hit and not really something that I've caused through my method of driving or modifications.
I thought about AM, but I was extremely time restricted and needed to get back on the road, unfortunately.
Thanks mate 👍
Great video !
Thanks mate 🙏
Hi Nathan! Wow! Im an auctioneer in the industry and am following your adventures. Im a landcruiser “nut” having owned 40,45,47,60,80,100,200,75, 79 etc. also 4.2 nissan etc. i had the 200 and sold it as i was seeing issues appearing. Went back to a 79 dual cab. Its interesting. Last year Inwas in Newman with a major mining client (valuing their fleet), and i said “no 200 series?” (They had 75 series still, 76,78,79 and prado), he said “no we wont run a 200 or the new 300. Too stressed in this environment where the red dust has a high iron content. We prefer the 4 cyl in the prado as its more reliable.” Infound his comment’s interesting. It was easier to repair the front ends in the prado every 10,000k. All the v8 79s etc had aftermarket airboxes but they dont last like the 6cyl 75. So its a sad state of affairs now. I note that the roumors re 4 cyl 70 series are out and inwondered if toyota have been listening to their major customer… re running gear. Also the 300- i had one as a company car… id hate to donwhat you do in your 200 with a 300. Toyota have lost the plot imo. My 79 dual cab is the last one i will buy.
Ps- sorry for typos. I have “miss world” 1979 fj45 and my son and inare planning the Canning in her with the dual cab as a back up. Tough genuine 100,000km truck
Hey mate, thanks for your info there!
I agree with you though and I'm also interested to hear that the mining companies are choosing the smaller capacity engines due to repair and maintenance costs. It makes sense though!
The 200 is a very comfortable vehicle, but its certainly not as reliable as my old 105 series or the mighty 80 series 💪
Toyota's hand is forced in these circumstances given the majority of buyers and environmental considerations.
That’s interesting Simon, it’s testament to how hard mining conditions are replacing front ends every 10k, that’s not a lot of kms but prado is a mid duty 4wd though, and even aftermarket gear not quite doing the job… I’d like to know if mining companies consider other makes of 4wd or if Toyota is still the toughest and best option…
@@XploringOz spot on. The pressure re fuel consumption as well. The 300 was averaging 9.1 litres per hundred. Its very comfortable as was my 200. Ate the miles
@@FarqueKnowsWhere the toyotas are still the king. They do try other products but they just cant cope. I think this lack of competition has made toyota slack eg track difference in the 70 series as an example. My new company car is a v6 wildtrack. As a daily driver its very very good. But the build quality isnt as good as toyota and its full of electronics. Happy drive it but not own it. Inwill stick to my 79 dual cab and my miss world 1979 45 series (with a genuine 110,000k 😊)
Great detailed info, thanks mate. A related question on the Sahara spec 200 - does the KDSS complicate things at all with things like adding a suspension lift, and servicing costs? I know you have a separate video on KDSS which seems pretty positive about it - I was just curious if you've experienced any downsides to it so far?
Hey mate, I've not experienced any down sides at this point. That system has always worked well in my experience and I would opt for it again if I had my time over.
Suspension installs just need to make sure the system is levelled back out after fitment 👍
Thanks for your real world experience. I'm interested in your weights while towing. I have 2019 VX with the Lovell's GVM upgrade which allows 2T on the rear axle. I also have a larger sub tank (70l) and when I connect my 3.4T van and its 340kg ball weight, there's not much freeboard left on the rear axle load.
Cheers mate. Yeah for sure, we are quite literally on the edge with our weights and the same issue, rear axle weight in the cruiser. We can manipulate our weights a little with gear and water between the combination but this is probably a video for a seperate video 👍
This makes me feel much better about the coin I spent on my Range Rovers, but wary about the prospects for my new Troop Carrier.
Every vehicle has their issues and shortcomings, I certainly hope that you have great adventures and trouble free km's in your new cruiser 🤞
The Troopy will offer far better distance per $ than any Rover. Unfortunately the VDJ76 somewhat lacks the refinement and offroad articulation/capability of the Rover but more than compensates in outright reliability and overall running costs.
FMD, I thought my 3rd hand Colorado was exxy. Love your videos, your honesty and detail.
Haha 😆 It's painful to recount... Thanks mate 🙏
Sorry to hear mate.
So glad I never chose a 200 series. Mates have spent far too much money repairing them. 3.3 tonne is also just far too heavy to tow with a 200 series regardless of the GVM upgrade..still using the same old transmission, brakes, diff, etc.etc. I,ll never understand the need to lug mcmansions around.
I mean, everything out there has a limit. It wouldn't really matter what vehicle you choose, nothings perfect.
Each to their own I guess 🤷♂️
Was that big water crossing worth it?probably cost 10k starter motor and a couple of turbos. I bet more to come, idler pulleys and an alternator will be next.Geez id bail on that with a 100k replacement especially on a lap trip of a lifetime. For me on long trips, i really try to minimise risk. Maybe buy blow up boat and play on that in the water. Credit to you for taking it on the chin. I try to do everything on my car myself, not because im cheap (disco and kedron ), but i want to know i have most tools i need if we get stuck. I aslo carry a full service kit minus the oil in the rear panels of the wagon. Food for thought, youre a smart bloke probabably need a push. :)
Hey Nathan, this one had me shook up. I had no idea that the costs were that high. As you know we will arrive in Australia in July and start our big lap. The cruiser is on top of our list of vehicles we wish to do the lap with. Would you still recommend the cruiser to us to tow a 3t van around the country? As always, safe travels mate 🤙🏼
Hey Simon, I reckon that we have probably had more issues than most and this probably isn't helped with my track choice and driving style 🥴
I would still buy this vehicle over again, it really is a great choice and has performed well given the circumstances and situations that I've put it through 👍
I'll send you a message soon 👍
@@XploringOz cheers mate! I needed that 😅..
@@snoordman04 Must be looking forward to your trip though! Long time coming!
@@XploringOz in no words I can describe how much we are looking forward to our trip. Me and the girls are as ready as can be. Might contact you for some info when purchasing a 200LC. Thanks for the inspiration throughout the pandemic! 🤙🏼
Sometimes we think we are the only person paying out all the money. Everyone is paying high repair bills. Parts and labour is high and newer cars do have lots of problems. You are having a great holiday, if you were overseas you would be paying a lot of money on air fares etc. Enjoy your travels and hopefully no more problems.
For sure, it's easy to loose that perspective.
Thanks mate, we are certainly having a great time and wouldn't change a thing 👍
Thanks for sharing this! Very good content! 👍
Thanks mate, hopefully it helps someone 👍
The issue with your turbos was caused from "dusting"? Have you installed an aftermarket airbox out of interest?
We have since this. I was always waiting for the Donaldson XLC200 unit that is now available on the market 👍 So far, so good 🤞
I used to be an auto elec. and I do my own services and repairs. But there are limits eg I no longer pull out 4wd gearboxes at home.
1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 1 WHINCH REBUILD ENGINE 300 DIESEL TUBRO COST $14,000 AUSTRALIA DOLLARS AND ENGINE LAST 10,000KM
THANK YOU FOR VIDEO AS TRUE DO UNDERSTAND SHOW ABOUT COST OPERATION 4X4
WISH BEST FURTHER TRAVEL TIME AROUND BEAUTYFUL AUSTRALIA
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🙏
Here's hoping the worst is behind us now 🤞
That's why I love the old before 2006 land cruiser whit no electronic simple and easy maintenance it's my opinion
Yeah, they are great vehicles as was my 105 series. This being said, there's no comparison in power, economy and comfort. Everything is a compromise 👍
How can we protect the electrical and ECU, when doing water crossing?
Well, glad you pointed all this out just wondering what you doing for a crust ?, have a hzj 75 never had a problem, probably because, no electronics, no Automatics, no ABS, no Airbags, no Electric Windows, no aftermarket mods, just plain old cruiser no problems, please explain😂
Haha, yeah mate, they were the best! These new vehicles don't stand chance, but they are what they are.
Great video.
Would be interesting if you could have added how many I’m looking bake pads and add ons have lasted.
Enjoy life….. you only get one we say.
Hey mate, I think you're asking how many kms? It had done about 165000km at the time of this video 👍
Absolutely, agree with you there
Thanks for the update Nathan. I just spent $1650 on EGR removal clean intake removed and cleaned. Intercollegiate clean Massive job 9 hours in labour special clean of intercollegiate replaced radiator fluid so money well spent when I looked how dirty it was.
Yeah, nothings cheap. But these are the costs we pay for these luxuries and this style of travel.
I would have it any other way 👍
Just bought a 200 series and binging all your videos.
Haha, we’ll don’t let this discourage you. This is still by far my favourite vehicle and I absolutely love it.
Hopefully yours will take you on some awesome adventures too 👍
@@XploringOz already have 2 camp trips and a Frasier trip booked. Can’t wait 😃
@@jarredwilkinson3507 That's awesome. We were on Fraser about a week or 2 ago and absolutely loved it! Enjoy mate
Anything under $20k for surprise charges for a trip around the land down under is reasonable. It would be interesting to compare it to the cost of maintaining a Patrol of similar specifications and functional requirements.
Sure would be interesting to compare side by side with another vehicle under similar circumstances 👍
Man you got shafted the whole way. These are an easy car to work on (even replacing the starter motor). Grab yourself a tool kit and you’ll be able to do most of the work yourself. Cut those servicing costs to less than $100.
Great Vid mate! Keep it up!!
Thanks mate 🙏
Can you let me know how the trans tune caused issues with the engine? Surely just holding gear shouldn't affect the engine, unless the tune was not correct for towing?
That correct, the tune hasn't taken into consideration these circumstances and the ECU's aren't cooperating together as they should. I mean obviously the trans should down shift in those high load circumstances, but the trans tune is ignoring these commands.
You mentioned dusting issues and new turbos. Did you do / upgrade anything to resolve these issues if so what was it ?
Hey mate, I've fitted the Donaldson XLC200K airbox to prevent future dusting, but replaced the turbos with genuine units 👍
Over $1700 for a starter motor??? I have never spent more than $300 for a Bosch starter motor? & $400 discrepancy for a major service???
Did you harvest one of Tegan's kidneys?
Haha, yes it’s about $580-600 ish for the motor and then the rest is taking the top of the engine apart to access and swap it over 🤦♂️ what a stupid mounting location!
PS, Teagan’s kidneys were not harmed to supply cruiser parts…. At least not yet 😆
Good honest video, mate, may I ask how many ks on the car?
Thanks mate, for sure. Its a 2014 with 165000 at the time of this vid 👍
I did the T3 upgrade with Extreme pads. Loved the performance, hated how quickly the pads wore. Maybe your rear brake bias needs adjusting ?
That intercooler is a rip off. I got a complete plazma-man intercooler for my skyline for $1000 and it's good for 700hp! How much labour are they charging? $500+ ???
Yeah, I don't know how they get away with charging those figures, but the other brands aren't any different 😔
Yet my Petrol 200 series with all the trips and crossings I've done not 1 mechanical failure or electrical issue!
Awesome, that's good news 👍
Don't get me started, I have my own 23 or so sad case studies with that brand. Stock standard, used within spec.
Whining transmissions, gearbox stuck in 1st gear, vehicle immovable, that Dyna electric fire, snapped gudgeon pin with conrod through the block - the list is extensive. All driven by responsible, senior staff members or myself. The warranty never delivered, other than an arrogant factory rep belittling me at AutoAfrica98. I'll rather drive Ford, Isuzu, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz. These served me well over 40-odd years.
Great video mate.
Did you ever need to spend that much on your 150 Toyota Prado?
Hey mate, I didn't but it's still in the family and it's also on its 2nd engine due to fatal piston failure 🤦♂️ Cost more than my repairs to replace...
@@XploringOz ahh was it a 3L? I heard they resolved that catastrophic position issue in the 2.8s
@@Rob.Salta90 Yes it was. The last of the 3L D4D engines 😢
You haven’t mention the radiator as yet 😮
Still going strong 💪
People keep telling me to sell my 105 and update to a 200. But you know what? Its very basic and parts are not expensive. But best of all. I can do 99% of the work myself. So yea. I'll be keeping the 105.
For sure mate, I also had a 105 series a couple of years ago along with the 200 and it didn't cost a cent in repairs. Great vehicles, but there are other compromises made too 👍
@@XploringOz Dont get me wrong. Id love to get a 200 series. But i also want to keep the 105. You know, the struggles of the Aussie male. 😆

Yeh, you are right, money comes and goes, in my case it mainly just goes 😢
Haha 😆 Hey, I know the feeling! But experiences and memories are coming in I'm sure 👍
Nathan - thanks for your openess on this - how many k's has the card done
Thanks mate, this 2014 had done about 165000km at the time of this video 👍
$18k? Cheap as chips for you big time RUclips creators 🤣
Jokes aside, I couldn’t agree more about what you said really. You can stay at home counting ur cash OR get into it 💪🏼
I can’t think of a better way to get into it than what ur doing 👍🏻
Haha, yeah right lol 😆

@@XploringOz I was fortunate, people in my workplace had negotiated extra Holliday leave each year, so basically it amounted to a few days short of 8 weeks if you opted to work a certain amount of Sunday’s each year. I happily obliged because I Always hated ‘weekends’ because everything became busy. Further to that, I use to nearly always take all my
Leave at half pay, which meant I could take up to 15 weeks leave. I nearly always would take it on one hit and If I careful I could organise my Fortnight leading up to my extended holidays so I would work 9 days straight just before my holidays started and 9 days straight after I returned from leave and this would give me another 10 days. This would effectively give me just under 17 weeks off to travel.
One year I would do FNQ/Cape York, the next I would cross the Simpson Desert and explore the centre, another year top end NT & so on. About the only two major places I didn’t explore whilst on Annual Holidays was Tasmania and the WA Coastline.
One of my closest friends at work use to do the exact opposite to me, he would carefully spread his 7 odd weeks into small breaks across the year, so as to never be away from the business for too long at a time. Even then sometimes he’d visit the office for a few hours during his 5 days off 🤦♂️. He was a hard worker and great guy but just lived for working. Sometimes we would work together and I would talk about my travels and
He indicated to me that he planned to take early retirement on his 60th Birthday, which would have had him working with the company for 43 years, as he started with them as a trainee at age 17. He had huge plans for his travelling life after he turned 60.
Late one afternoon whilst working on an extended stressful job my friend was killed. He was just 2
Weeks past his 50th birthday and still 9 years and 50
Weeks short of his retirement goal. My blood ran COLD when he died and for years after his death I couldn’t help but think about what he missed out on in life by 1: Being so dedicated to his job & 2: Delaying his dreams by planning for everything to occur after he retired.
The sad thing is, the company that we worked for really didn’t care about him (or I) at all. He’d given so much to them and other than management turning up to his funeral there was buggerr all else they did and his wife, who was actually 10 years older than
Him was left to live out her life alone, she fretted so much over him she didn’t even
Chase their retirement dreams and has pretty much lived out her life at their family home. As weird as it might sound, after his death I carried a wallet sized photo of him in my wallet and for years I took his photo everywhere I travelled.
Sorry to bore you with
That long story but I can unequivocally say that both of you are doing the right thing. I think your kids are at the start of that age where travelling and exploring will greatly benefit their lives and they’ll carry these memories for the rest of their lives. Enjoy your time👍🏻

just watched another West Aussie RUclipsr just blow 11k on an engine in his 150 Prado, your 18k was a shock TBH sadly these days modern diesel is very expensive to repair and realistically maintain when used hard on a trip.
For sure, it is a bit disappointing. My father in law who now owns our previous Prado 150 just spent that much putting new engine in his too.... it's far too common
@@XploringOz
I am sorry to hear about your inlaw's 150 and I'm sure that bill stung. how i got onto yours and the other RUclipsr 150 was im currently in the market for another 4x4 and searched for known problems with the Toyota Prado and yes injector issues and engine failing you are correct its far too common to see these very very expensive failers.
how many ks did your 200 have on it when you bought it? and now?
cheers old mate
How many KMs on the cruiser ?
I think it was about 175000km at this point
Just goes to show, you must have a break down and emergency fund set aside for the unforeseen events. Simply a parent or child gets ill and you have to fly home, or major car breakdowns, or the fridge in your van dies. At least have some contingency fund to cover these events, else the Mastercard will cop a flogging.
For sure, anything can happen in an instance and being prepared takes a lot of the stress and anxiety way from those already demanding situations. 👍
Diesel reliability has plumeted the last 15 years , the manufacturers have lost one of the main selling points of a diesel is reliability .
I'd agree with you there mate 👍
Keep everything factory stocked man all add ons wreck the equipment.
Maybe, but the turbos, brakes and intercoolers weren't modified and should have lasted a lot longer.
They don’t typically like being used as a part time submarine.
Haha 😆 Yes, we have learnt this 😂 But in all seriousness, some of these crossing weren't by choice but necessity.
Ill never touch another commonrail again, petrol all the way
They sure do have their advantages 👍
