Great video Rod, as someone who has always, even as a kid, liked to take things apart to find out how they work and fix problems that occur, really enjoyed watching this. Looking forward to the ongoing series.
I have been around cars over 5 decades. Dabbled in a few pre electronic GM and Ford transmissions in the US. I used to have a couple of guys that I went to for parts back in the day(Pre internet). Good to see someone else who isn’t just a remove and replace person. Knowing how each component works and WHY something failed is above and beyond the typical shop. Glad I stumbled across the channel. New subscriber.
Being a mine vehicle, I would have asked the client if they speed limited the vehicle by locking out access to the available gear set. For example, one of the mines I was on locked the underground 79 Series to low range and and had a physical H pattern gate plate that only allowed Reverse, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Similiarly with auto, gear selection was controlled electroniclly.
Great episode as usual! As a backyard ametur self taught 'Have a go' handy man I've disassembled a few failed transmissions and seen what failed but it's great to get the educated information and correct naming and descrpition. The last unit had stripped splines so can only assume it was driver error and using the throttle pedal as an on/off switch😲 By the way I always use low range at every oportunity even when only reversing a small trailer because I get sooo much better controland I've always feared this result Thanks for sharing 😃
Very informative content, mine vehicles work hard in the worst conditions heat ,dust not a lot speed & air flow for cooling and sometimes loaded to the hilt lucky the box didn't have more damage, would worth fitting one of your larger oil Coolers.
So glad the you tube wormhole bought me here, don't own a single automatic vehicle, an never wish to, but you two put on a great show, good experience, entertaining and educational at the same time. To be entertained while learning is one of lifes greatest pleasures.
Hi, Great Video Cheers, i would like to see a 6L80e worked on i have hard 1st to 2nd & 2nd to 3rd changers also slow changing down in mine I'm thinking maybe pressure switch or solenoid. Keep up the great work see you soon.
Good on you fellas, a birds eye view of the mighty 200 series transmission. I've done a few A750's with similar symptoms. Your videos are helpful, I use them for demonstration purposes with my student's, Keep them coming. Cheers.
Very informative for those who watch. I could pull apart easily, but that’s about that. The rest is mind bending. Our engineers and tradesperson are tops.
You guys rock! I'm just about to buy a caravan & tow it for 6 months with my 200. I've got a lockup installed to help with heat control but it's really interesting to see inside that box. You guy clearly know your stuff..
Great video guys. Many years ago I started my apprenticeship at KB auto, but I didn't stay long enough to learn the diagnostic. Thanks for the insight!
There's a American guy who does Auto pull downs in a bench like this ,and he uses a squeegee, like your shower scraper ,to move the oil to the drain on the bench 🙂
Hi, I have a 200 series Land Cruiser and was interested to see what can go wrong if the vehicle is driven incorrectly. I suspect the vehicle wasn't owned by the driver and therefore didn't have much responsibility towards it. Hopefully that driver will learn from their mistakes. I have a torque lock up controller and when in low range all gears 1-4 lock up after 1500 RPM. Also I monitor temperatures via the OBD port. A few months a go we flushed the transmission, replaced the strainer, checked for sediments, flushed the cooler and changed the ATF for a synthetic product. Although all this was expensive I regarded it as cheap insurance for a valuable transmission which has a huge reputation for reliability. Thanks for video. I will watch it again this time with sound.
Hi, really like your work and videos. As for auto transmission over heat, I don't think many 4x4 drivers correlate HP developed by the engine into heat creation in the transmission especially within a stalled or partially stalled torque converter. Boiling a kettle takes a couple of minutes but it is only getting less than 3Kw. How long would it take to boil a kettle if you put in 100kw? The transmissions can't get rid of the heat fast enough, even with big oil coolers, 100kw is a lot of energy to dissipate. Once the oil gets to 90C its all down hill from there. Maybe even 80C!
Can you cover the trans in a Prado 150. I understand the same transmission is used in Hilux, Fortuner, Triton, DMax and Mux. So there will be plenty of viewers interested. Cheers
Gday, well I didn’t realise there was some many components in an automatic transmission, very informative and easy to follow, definitely looking forward to more episodes like this and good to see another one of the team joining the camera action, cheers
I would like to see the A340 series Auto trans teardown & here of the problems they have, i a 1992 Toyota 4Runner Limited which has the 3VZE engine with the A343H Trans behind it, the trans did have a rebuild some time ago & recently the O/D Off Dash light has started blinking & when it is blinking it wont go back to first gear unless i manually select first then take off then select second/third.
Great idea for video series explaining the dark arts of automatic transmission. Is commodores six litre V8 and six speed auto with a Toyota transfer case used in many engine swap’s a good pairing, sounds good on paper but is the auto up to it.
Hey Guys. Super informative session, thanks. Just wondering what the tell-tales might be for a TC fault? Have a very slight shudder through the whole 200 series. Have had a complete flush, removed both drive-shafts, replaced the gearbox mount, changed all tyres, still evident. AAARRRGGGHHH. Will be towing a Van for a quick lap next year, and probably chasing a replacement box from you shortly. Will get the nomad valve body, deep pan, heavy duty overhaul, lock-up kit and extra trans cooler. Woo hoo
Great and informative episode guys. It makes me think of the damage I might of done, towing my patrol form Pakenham to Gembrook on a 45 degree day in my BA fairmont. I took my time, I kept it in 1st and 2nd. The trans was not happy with me with its beeping, I stopped a lot to give it time to cool with engine running. I would love to drop the car off to you for a trans rebuild it dose clunks in reverse (had this fixed in the past), be a good video for you as well. Cheers Guys
Man, I must be old because I’ve never seen a wiring harness inside a transmission😂 I think the last one I was in was a V8 traumatic back in the 80’s. That transmission was like a bloody Tardis, parts just kept coming out of it. Great video and I’ll definitely sub. Cheers Stuart.
Thanks Ron. Interesting content and looking forward to more. As a 200 owner, thanks for reminding us to use low range more, especially in sand. Question- looking at the oil, and as I tow quite frequently, when would you recommend changing the oil? Cheers
Hey Rod great video looking forward to seeing more of this content👍. I have a Landrover Discovery with a zf 8 speed, do you see many problems with this gearbox? I feel it slip in first gear but I'm told it's the torque vectoring system! But it sometimes clunks into first gear! Have you seen this before?
I have a 2020 model hilux and tow a trailer almost daily my trans temp can get up to 95 degrees c in some hilly country. Is this temp getting two high and causing damage. When not towing the temp sits on 87 degrees c cruising on the highway. Not sure if I should install a trans cooler or weather these temps are normal. Lov the video 😊
I find auto transmissions to be the most complex of mechanical components to understand in terms of operation. I can work on most things mechanical but I wouldn’t touch an auto trans.
Awesome - love this stuff- Requesting please : Aisin AWR6B45 II (especially interested in seeing evidence of any stresses suffered by this box from power & torque increases from dyno-tuned engines) - Tkx, please do many more!!
We will do at som piont, we call them the AC60 transmission and they are found in a lot of differnt vehicals, Dmax, MUX, 2.8L Prado 150, 2.8L Hilux, MR Triton and the list goes on.
@@WholesaleAutomatics Up-vote AC60 teardown and analysys 👍 Can it really handle 20-30% Pwr/HP increases? Are the AC60 clutches up to "mo-powah? What will wear out first? - Also, how about an mini ep. of "how" your HD Nomad valvebody achieves the benefits? - looking fwd to more please - Tkx.

What a great series. Took me straight back to my dad's auto workshops. Loved how you went through and explained how to spot the problems and what causes them, especially the driving tips. Would love to see some on common owner errors that destroy autos. I've got a 6sp Ranger but honestly, they're all interesting. Great stuff. Thanks. Cheers PP
Some car / 4wd manufacturers don’t even recommend changing the transmission oil at regular intervals in the service manual. I was told my Hilux was sealed for life. Took no notice of that advice. The transmission gets a flush and full service every 50 000 kms. If I towed and drove in sand a lot I would be getting it done around every 30 to 40 thousand.
Sealed for life just means there is no Dipstick! Transmission still needs to be services every 40,000Kms, they are just filled and checked from underneath
Hi Rocket Thanks for an awesome video. Can you do a A343F trans rebuild(100 series LC)? My year 2000; 100 series transmission (2uzfe motor) blew just because a needle roller bearing inside the planetary gear failed. It is a common issue on the year 2000.
Exciting to see! Why has my bright red ATF oil lost its color the last time I checked and has now become transparent like water after 3 years? feels good between the fingers and doesn't smell burnt, usually pulls carefully cart in other times calm state traffic
Outstanding video guys, very clear voices and vision. Very detailed explanation and examples of things that can go wrong and why. Looking forward to the next one. Thank You.
I just loved this video. It was fascinating to see the transmission pulled down. Am I correct in understanding that the nomad valve body assists I reducing the risk of the burnt clutches by increasing line pressure to the clutches and torque converter to reduce slip and hence heat build up?
Large Oil Cooler everyday of the week and lock-up if you tow is a huge benefit was well. I would do both cooler and lock-up kit,. Here is the web link: automatictransmission.com.au/select-your-vehicle/toyota/landcruiser/200-series-turbo-diesel-with-6-speed-auto/?make=Toyota&model=LandCruiser&series=200%20Series%20Turbo%20Diesel%20with%206%20Speed%20Auto
would be good to see a fix for vibrations and shuddering in overdrive gear, at 100km+ my 200 LC has a vibration when cruising, i push it down to 4th gear and the vibration goes away. Had the transmission serviced and some additive applied but appears to still be happening occasionally. LC200 has done a little over 300000 km
We really don't see this. If fact I don't think I have seen this before. You might have a problem rather than a factory built in problem. You might want to get this checked out by both a mechanic and separately a transmission specialist.
Had to watch as I have a 200 Question they tell me these are a sealed unit and the transmission fluid never needs to be changed is this correct also what Could I do to improve it...Regards.
Sealed for life just means there is no Dipstick, need to check the level from under the car. We recommend all transmissions are serviced every 40,000kms
Great video Fellas, I really appreciate the effort involved in putting it together. as a 200 owner thats pretty dissapointed with the lockup programming on these I was very interested to see what the cause was! not that you get any lockup in first on these units!
Thanks for the video it was very interesting. I tow a caravan with a LC200 and on a hot day the TC and pan temperatures can get up to 110-115c when going up hills, at what temperature would you be concerned?
In your case ad an oil cooler as soon as possible as you are very much on the high end. I would also be installing the Nomad Lock-Up that will pay for both just in fuel saving. automatictransmission.com.au/select-your-vehicle/toyota/landcruiser/200-series-turbo-diesel-with-6-speed-auto/?make=Toyota&model=LandCruiser&series=200%20Series%20Turbo%20Diesel%20with%206%20Speed%20Auto
That was a great video. Makes me think about things I do in my 200. Out of interest, how often you suggest a trans flush on a 200 that is used mostly for 4x4 work?
Hi, I use my lx570 in a way that I use the trans for engine braking as I tow a 7500 lb trailer. And without. Is this trans good for using like that? Is there a gear that is weak? Is it good to do at all? It sure looks beefy. I rarely go down to first but often go to 4 3 and then 2 as I slow. I rarely downshift above 2500-3000. Should I blip the gas a bit on a heavy higher rpm downshift? I commonly go down to 3 and two around 2000-2500 slowing down. Awesome to run across your channel and more so that you did my trans.
These are a great auto but I would recommend a heavy duty Nomad Valve Body that will make the world of difference in reliability as well as the Lock-Up kit and oil cooler. Here is the the web link: automatictransmission.com.au/select-your-vehicle/lexus/lx/LX570-5-7L-V8-with-6-Speed-Auto/?make=Lexus&model=LX&series=LX570%205.7L%20V8%20Petrol%20with%206%20Speed%20Auto
Yes, they will unless you are using a lock-up kit. Best kit to use is the Nomad Lock-Up kit as it will release if you put to much load on the lock-up plate, here is the direct link: automatictransmission.com.au/shop/nomad-torque-converter-lock-up-control-kit-to-suit-toyota-landcruiser-200-series/

I am very interested in your experiences with the ZF 8HP in the single range Amaroks. How well have they performed without having a low range?
yeah do a ZF-8HP next time! I have got one which has a low RPM shudder and am trying to figure out what's up with it.
Very informative, a lot going on inside that unit. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Can you do a 6 speed Mazda 3 transmission?
That was a great video. Makes me think about things I do in my 200.
Out of interest, how often you suggest a trans flush on a 200 that is used mostly for 4x4 work?
Transmissions should be serviced every 40,000Kms
@@WholesaleAutomatics perfect! Thanks for your insight. Love the videos
Would be a lot of interest in doing a what went wrong with a 6L50 with converter from the 2017 on RG Colorado
Thanks I like your work
Thanks Colin!
Here is the the web link:

Great video guys!
Thanks for watching Elliott
Can the torque converter lock up clutch slip in these if they are working hard in hills towing?
Yes, they will unless you are using a lock-up kit. Best kit to use is the Nomad Lock-Up kit as it will release if you put to much load on the lock-up plate, here is the direct link:
