2006 was the year that the skating world was expecting. 2006 were the World Championships of Sasha Cohen. It's heartbreaking she had to retire without ever being the World Champion.
Sasha had it all and could have beaten anyone if only she could have held it together more in the long programs she skated. Such a shame because her beauty and refined style of skating have never been matched before or after her time.
There are enormously talented athletes and artists in all disciplines who simply cannot deliver consistently when the pressure is on. Sasha has so many natural gifts other skaters would kill for, but self-confidence doesn't appear to be one of them. The desperate switching of coaches is almost always a trouble sign. She is so flexible, graceful and musical. But skating is a combination of mechanics and artistry. Mastery of only one of them won't put and keep you at the top. So sad.
Sasha had such grace, artistry, skill and athleticism, but rarely turned in a flawless performance. Too much pressure? She was so much better than many of her competitors and there was no one more beautiful to watch. She was one of the best regardless. I loved watching her skate.
She seemed to be so much more into character at the Olympics. I think she did better the Olympics BECAUSE she fell. She said it always meant a lot to her to finish this program strong. After starting out bad she knew she had to skate the rest strongly. Such a beautiful skater.
This performance sums up her career...With no Shizuka, no Irina and no Michelle this World Champion was all but handed to her but she threw it away. What shame.
I remember reading prior to these Worlds, Sasha said she wanted a World Championship, and she thought that it would be easier for her to win, as her major competition wouldn't be there. After this performance, her coach, John Nicks, said that he felt sorry for her over her not winning.
Sasha’s unpredictable jumps always had me on the edge of my seat. Her unstable landings were often like she had spaghetti noodles for legs. I often wondered if she worked on her strength training as much as her flexibility, would she have been able to muscle through the jumps better. She had such stunning positions and spins!
This was her chance for world gold...it was on a platter. But she tripped and knocked the platter over and Kimmie caught it...oh well. I don't know if she'd be able to push hard enough for a medal on the world stage now, not with all of the Japanese ladies and US skaters like Zhang and Nagasu coming up...
Troy Turner it´s irrelevant who were there and who were not. It´s all about the athletes and what they are doing. And everyone has a bad day sometimes.
Lilian This wasn't a bad day. Did you even bother to watch the Olympics? This is how she always skated: starts out strong and then the mistakes happen. She is a gorgeous skater but the personification of INCONSISTENCY!!!! But in Turin, the mistakes happened early on.
She skates a great short program and self destructs in the free. The ONLY long program that I've ever seen her skate clean was her Swan Lake program and that was due to Robin Wagner lighting a fire under her ass.
Cohen is the best skater I've seen in my life. No one has hit the positions she has hit. So what she is not an world's or Oylumpic champion. She has placed in all of her events and has grown. She may fall during the events, but its how many times u get up that counts. She will make a come back during the 2009 2010 season.
@ViVi80 Look up her 2004 Marshall's program. It was probably the one time she was absolutely perfect. Closely followed by 2002 Nationals LP though she just had a hand down.
Sasha is the most beautiful figure skater I've ever seen. Physically and mentally fragile but the most beautiful figure skater I've ever seen. Hers is also is my favorite Romeo and Juliet of all time. I'm sad. Sasha never won a World title but she's married and has a baby. I only wish her the best.
This is NOT about a dislike of Sasha. It is about clearly who deserved the most out of the others. Sasha wasn't clearly a favorite unlike Michelle Kwan who clearly was the favorite to win, but her injuries took her out so she wasn't able to compete. It is a shame that Kwan was then overshadowed by Sasha's success, but that doesn't mean that Kwan should be the one to be singled out or disliked in favor of Sasha. That resulted with Shizuka winning gold and Sasha, silver in the 2006 Olympic games.
she was a wonderful skater; just was not a good competitor. competitors have to be able to channel that nervous energy and pressure and use it to their advantage. if she would have done that she probably would have won everything she entered, hands down. but so many times she looked to be completely focused and then she would just fall apart, just tripping at the finish line. I frequently give her a hard time but I really do enjoy watching her skate. it'd be nice to see her back for 2010.
It's too bad, I wonder if she ever considered working with a sports psychologist to help her focus. She had all the artistic talent in the world, but lacked that certain grit to do it under pressure.
Man I love her and still think she is the best skater I have ever seen. I mean this shit is hard! People criticizing seem to forget that. No matter how many times she falls or makes a mistake, she is still a friggen ice skating master! I couldn't ice skate out of a box to save my life.
In my opinion Sasha is the best figure skater in the world. She always chokes during the long program , she has never won a world championship, but I have been watching skating since the early 19 70's and Sasha is the only female figure skater that has moved me to tears, the emotion I feel watching her is so real. That is how I know Sasha is best in the world . Lol.
She really frustrates me. Never have I seen such a beautiful, elegant skater. She moves like no other, but she doesn't fight for it. Fight, girl, FIGHT! I just want to shake her sometimes. She always loses the will to go on. Indeed, she often looks defeated as soon as she starts.
The commentators for here (CBC, Canada) are: Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini. I can't remember the others names. Barb and Paul were once pair skaters for Canada, and 1984 World Pairs Champions
Well, it was reported extensively during 2002 Nationals that Sasha twice purposely collided with Michelle Kwan during practice, and also Sasha skated in Nikodinov's skating path. Sasha denied she did that on purpose, though. I just never cared for Sasha's attitude. I remember during 2003 Nationals, Tarasova (Sasha's coach at that time) congratulated Kwan on her win while Sasha sat and sulked and didn't look at them- maybe that's just my perception, though.
... And maybe if she spent more time working on her skating instead of trying to body-check/ collide with other skaters during practice she could have won Worlds!
@midnightblusky of course she was injured here. Anyone who has seen her skate consistently knows that she never looses her balance on the elements where she shows off her flexibility. She did so in this program several times.
I could just see this coming. Even with a weak field Sasha couldn't get it done. She just didn't have the guts to pull it off sad to say because she really had something special when she was on the ice.
Just to be skating at this level, in the competition, you have to be a phenomenal athlete and artist. Sasha is a legend. Her spiral sequences are iconic!
JZMUSIZZ - sasha was a talker. She loved the attention and got sponsored a lot. She didn't push herself and did not practice as much as she should have.
Kimmie may not be a strong skater, but she does have some certain advantages. I thought she was a great jumper but even if her spirals were not that lovely like Sasha's.
@MissThingSings What about Tonia Kwiatkowski she was an elite skater been to U.S. Championships numerous times won the U.S. short program (1995) but never won 1st place at U.S.Championship, or any Olympic medal, or any World medal?
People talk about how she is so special and has so many "gifts" on the ice besides the jumps--what gifts? Her skating skills are terrible. She's slow. She is flexible, that's the only thing you can say about her, but there are lots of skaters just as flexible as she is. There's nothing special about her skating.
It took me the years passing by to really see this. Her approach to jumps are so wobbly and "floppy". She is tiny but doesn't look strong. Other tiny skaters are still strong-looking. I do still love how she moves to the music. I think she is quite artistic and had loads of natural talent but seemed to coast on that natural ability rather than hone it. I will never forget a Pro/Am competition she did up here in Canada and she was just mesmerizing.
Oh come on people. She was wonderful on her short program and you think she was 'cursed' to fail on her long program? Whose fault is that if she couldn't manage to complete a long program? Her coach? Her fans? Or the threat of competing against another greatest skater Irina who also fell on her program? I am not going to blame her for her consistency problem. I am not going to blame the fact that she wasn't practicing enough like she should have or if she had reoccurring injuries.

Poor Sasha, one of the biggest choke artists ever in the sport. So perfect yet could never put it all together when it counted most.

This is gold. I live for the second half of the program and the falls.
HAHAHAHAHA!
She has everything. I admire her so much
@ADforKB she won the bronze at this competition. still love her all the same.
She just gave this title away.
But Sasha was amazing.
this music makes me melt
Oh yes, they're very difficult - level 4, and the positions she hits, etc. Very hard, no one else can do 'em like Sasha does.
I read all the positive comments made earlier about Sasha, and then, as if the wind shifted, it just diminished. It made me so sad.
какое изящное катание смотрю 22 году и восхищаюсь
Her spins are nice but they are very slow. Her first few jumps were great. She always had a perfect air position!
This was her chance for world gold...it was on a platter. But she tripped and knocked the platter over and Kimmie caught it...oh well. I don't know if she'd be able to push hard enough for a medal on the world stage now, not with all of the Japanese ladies and US skaters like Zhang and Nagasu coming up...

but everything is done gracefully
I think in her great career she just couldn't handle the pressure... straight nerves!

I totally agree. Air position is only a part of the jump. Her landing is always so inconsistent...

I'm Alamater at eleven years soprano Cynthia Corcoran at seven years here as world figure skater Sasha Cohen.
